Unmixing highly mixed grain size distribution data via maximum volume constrained end member analysis

End member analysis (EMA) unmixes grain size distribution (GSD) data into a mixture of end members (EMs), thus helping understand sediment provenance and depositional regimes and processes. In highly mixed data sets, however, many EMA algorithms find EMs which are still a mixture of true EMs. To overcome this, we propose maximum volume constrained EMA (MVC-EMA), which finds EMs as different as possible. We provide a uniqueness theorem and a quadratic programming algorithm for MVC-EMA. Experimental results show that MVC-EMA can effectively find true EMs in highly mixed data sets.

Forcing the Whole Video as Background: An Adversarial Learning Strategy for Weakly Temporal Action Localization

With video-level labels, weakly supervised temporal action localization (WTAL) applies a localization-by-classification paradigm to detect and classify the action in untrimmed videos. Due to the characteristic of classification, class-specific background snippets are inevitably mis-activated to improve the discriminability of the classifier in WTAL. To alleviate the disturbance of background, existing methods try to enlarge the discrepancy between action and background through modeling background snippets with pseudo-snippet-level annotations, which largely rely on artificial hypotheticals. Distinct from the previous works, we present an adversarial learning strategy to break the limitation of mining pseudo background snippets. Concretely, the background classification loss forces the whole video to be regarded as the background by a background gradient reinforcement strategy, confusing the recognition model. Reversely, the foreground(action) loss guides the model to focus on action snippets under such conditions. As a result, competition between the two classification losses drives the model to boost its ability for action modeling. Simultaneously, a novel temporal enhancement network is designed to facilitate the model to construct temporal relation of affinity snippets based on the proposed strategy, for further improving the performance of action localization. Finally, extensive experiments conducted on THUMOS14 and ActivityNet1.2 demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Low Rank Approximation of Dual Complex Matrices

Dual complex numbers can represent rigid body motion in 2D spaces. Dual complex matrices are linked with screw theory, and have potential applications in various areas. In this paper, we study low rank approximation of dual complex matrices. We define $2$-norm for dual complex vectors, and Frobenius norm for dual complex matrices. These norms are nonnegative dual numbers. We establish the unitary invariance property of dual complex matrices. We study eigenvalues of square dual complex matrices, and show that an $n \times n$ dual complex Hermitian matrix has exactly $n$ eigenvalues, which are dual numbers. We present a singular value decomposition (SVD) theorem for dual complex matrices, define ranks and appreciable ranks for dual complex matrices, and study their properties. We establish an Eckart-Young like theorem for dual complex matrices, and present an algorithm framework for low rank approximation of dual complex matrices via truncated SVD. The SVD of dual complex matrices also provides a basic tool for Principal Component Analysis (PCA) via these matrices. Numerical experiments are reported.

A Tensor Network Kalman filter with an application in recursive MIMO Volterra system identification

This article introduces a Tensor Network Kalman filter, which can estimate state vectors that are exponentially large without ever having to explicitly construct them. The Tensor Network Kalman filter also easily accommodates the case where several different state vectors need to be estimated simultaneously. The key lies in rewriting the standard Kalman equations as tensor equations and then implementing them using Tensor Networks, which effectively transforms the exponential storage cost and computational complexity into a linear one. We showcase the power of the proposed framework through an application in recursive nonlinear system identification of high-order discrete-time multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Volterra systems. The identification problem is transformed into a linear state estimation problem wherein the state vector contains all Volterra kernel coefficients and is estimated using the Tensor Network Kalman filter. The accuracy and robustness of the scheme are demonstrated via numerical experiments, which show that updating the Kalman filter estimate of a state vector of length $10^9$ and its covariance matrix takes about 0.007s on a standard desktop computer in Matlab.

Further results on $B$-tensors with application to the location of real eigenvalues

In this paper, we give a further study on $B$-tensors and introduce doubly $B$-tensors that contain $B$-tensors. We show that they have similar properties, including their decompositions and strong relationship with strictly (doubly) diagonally dominated tensors. As an application, the properties of $B$-tensors are used to localize real eigenvalues of some tensors, which would be very useful in verifying the positive semi-definiteness of a tensor.

Tensor Network alternating linear scheme for MIMO Volterra system identification

This article introduces two Tensor Network-based iterative algorithms for the identification of high-order discrete-time nonlinear multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Volterra systems. The system identification problem is rewritten in terms of a Volterra tensor, which is never explicitly constructed, thus avoiding the curse of dimensionality. It is shown how each iteration of the two identification algorithms involves solving a linear system of low computational complexity. The proposed algorithms are guaranteed to monotonically converge and numerical stability is ensured through the use of orthogonal matrix factorizations. The performance and accuracy of the two identification algorithms are illustrated by numerical experiments, where accurate degree-10 MIMO Volterra models are identified in about 1 second in Matlab on a standard desktop pc.

A Semismooth Newton Method for Tensor Eigenvalue Complementarity Problem

In this paper, we consider the tensor eigenvalue complementarity problem which is closely related to the optimality conditions for polynomial optimization, as well as a class of differential inclusions with nonconvex processes. By introducing an NCP-function, we reformulate the tensor eigenvalue complementarity problem as a system of nonlinear equations. We show that this function is strongly semismooth but not differentiable, in which case the classical smoothing methods cannot apply. Furthermore, we propose a damped semismooth Newton method for tensor eigenvalue complementarity problem. A new procedure to evaluate an element of the generalized Jocobian is given, which turns out to be an element of the B-subdifferential under mild assumptions. As a result, the convergence of the damped semismooth Newton method is guaranteed by existing results. The numerical experiments also show that our method is efficient and promising.

Generalized Eigenvalue Complementarity Problem for Tensors

In this paper, the generalized eigenvalue complementarity problem for tensors (GEiCP-T) is addressed, which arises from the stability analysis of finite dimensional mechanical systems and find applications in differential dynamical systems. The general properties of the (GEiCP-T) have been studied. We establish its relationship with the generalized tensor eigenvalue problem. It follows that if exist, the number of $λ$-solutions can be bounded. We also give some sufficient conditions for the existence of the solution. In particular, there exists a unique solution of the (EiCP-T) (i.e., $J=[n]$) for irreducible nonnegative tensors. For the symmetric case, we derive a sufficient and necessary condition for the solvability of the (GEiCP-T) by reformulating it as a nonlinear program. It has also been proved that deciding the solvability of the (EiCP-T) is NP-hard in general. Moreover, a shifted projected power method is proposed to solve the symmetric (GEiCP-T). The monotonic convergence is also established. The numerical experiments demonstrate convergence behavior of our method and show that the algorithm presented is promising.

The positive semi-definite cone and sum-of-squares cone of Hankel form

In this paper, the geometry properties of Hankel form are studied, including their positive semi-definite (PSD) cone and sum-of-squares (SOS) cone. We denote them by $HPSD(m,n)$ and $HSOS(m,n)$, respectively. We show that both $HPSD(m,n)$ and $HSOS(m,n)$ are closed convex cones. The dual cone of $HPSD(m,n)$ is the convex hull of all $m$-times convolutions of real vectors. Besides, we derive the dual cone of SOS tensors. By reformulation, it follows that the dual cone of $HSOS(m,n)$ can also be written explicitly. These results may lead further research on the Hilbert-Hankel problem.

Circulant Tensors with Applications to Spectral Hypergraph Theory and Stochastic Process

Circulant tensors naturally arise from stochastic process and spectral hypergraph theory. The joint moments of stochastic processes are symmetric circulant tensors. The adjacency, Laplacian and signless Laplacian tensors of circulant hypergraphs are also symmetric circulant tensors. The adjacency, Laplacian and signless Laplacian tensors of directed circulant hypergraphs are circulant tensors, but they are not symmetric in general. In this paper, we study spectral properties of circulant tensors and their applications in spectral hypergraph theory and stochastic process. We show that in certain cases, the largest H-eigenvalue of a circulant tensor can be explicitly identified. In particular, the largest H-eigenvalue of a nonnegative circulant tensor can be explicitly identified. This confirms the results in circulant hypergraphs and directed circulant hypergraphs. We prove that an even order circulant B$_0$ tensor is always positive semi-definite. This shows that the Laplacian tensor and the signless Laplacian tensor of a directed circulant even-uniform hypergraph are positive semi-definite. If a stochastic process is $m$th order stationary, where $m$ is even, then its $m$th order moment, which is a circulant tensor, must be positive semi-definite. In this paper, we give various conditions for a circulant tensor to be positive semi-definite.
