Universal relation for operator complexity

We study Krylov complexity $C_K$ and operator entropy $S_K$ in operator growth. We find that for a variety of systems, including chaotic ones and integrable theories, the two quantities always enjoy a logarithmic relation $S_K\sim \log{C_K}$ at long times, where dissipative behavior emerges in unitary evolution. Otherwise, the relation does not hold any longer. Universality of the relation is deeply connected to irreversibility of operator growth.

Circuit complexity for generalised coherent states in thermal field dynamics

In this work, we study the circuit complexity for generalized coherent states in thermal systems by adopting the covariance matrix approach. We focus on the coherent thermal (CT) state, which is non-Gaussian and has a nonvanishing one-point function. We find that even though the CT state cannot be fully determined by the symmetric two-point function, the circuit complexity can still be computed in the framework of the covariance matrix formalism by properly enlarging the covariance matrix. Now the group generated by the unitary is the semiproduct of translation and the symplectic group. If the reference state is Gaussian, the optimal geodesic is still be generated by a horizontal generator such that the circuit complexity can be read from the generalized covariance matrix associated to the target state by taking the cost function to be $F_2$. For a single harmonic oscillator, we discuss carefully the complexity and its formation in the cases that the reference states are Gaussian and the target space is excited by a single mode or double modes. We show that the study can be extended to the free scalar field theory.

Static and Dynamic Charged Black Holes

We consider a class of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories in general dimensions and construct both static and dynamic charged black holes. We adopt the reverse engineering procedure and make a specific ansatz for the scalar field and then derive the necessary scalar potential and the non-minimal coupling function between the scalar and the Maxwell field. The resulting static black holes contain mass and electric charge as integration constants. We find that some of the static solutions can be promoted to become dynamical ones in the Eddington-Finkelstein-like coordinates. The collapse solutions describe the evolution from a smaller charged black hole to a larger black hole state, driven by the scalar field.

AdS and Lifshitz Scalar Hairy Black Holes in Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

We consider Gauss-Bonnet (GB) gravity in general dimensions, which is non-minimally coupled to a scalar field. By choosing the scalar potential of the type $V(ϕ)=2Λ_0+\fft 12m^2ϕ^2+γ_4ϕ^4$, we first obtain large classes of scalar hairy black holes with spherical/hyperbolic/planar topologies that are asymptotic to locally anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-times. We derive the first law of black hole thermodynamics using Wald formalism. In particular, for one class of the solutions, the scalar hair forms a thermodynamic conjugate with the graviton and nontrivially contributes to the thermodynamical first law. We observe that except for one class of the planar black holes, all these solutions are constructed at the critical point of GB gravity where there exists an unique AdS vacua. In fact, Lifshitz vacuum is also allowed at the critical point. We then construct many new classes of neutral and charged Lifshitz black hole solutions for a either minimally or non-minimally coupled scalar and derive the thermodynamical first laws. We also obtain new classes of exact dynamical AdS and Lifshitz solutions which describe radiating white holes. The solutions eventually become an AdS or Lifshitz vacua at late retarded times. However, for one class of the solutions the final state is an AdS space-time with a globally naked singularity.

Black holes with vector hair

In this paper, we consider Einstein gravity coupled to a vector field, either minimally or non-minimally, together with a vector potential of the type $V=2Λ_0+\ft 12 m^2 A^2+γ_4 A^4$. For a simpler non-minimally coupled theory with $Λ_0=m=γ_4=0$, we obtain both extremal and non-extremal black hole solutions that are asymptotic to Minkowski space-times. We study the global properties of the solutions and derive the first law of thermodynamics using Wald formalism. We find that the thermodynamical first laws of the extremal black holes are modified by a one form associated with the vector field. In particular, due to the existence of the non-minimal coupling, the vector forms thermodynamic conjugates with the graviton mode and partly contributes to the one form modifying the first laws. For a minimally coupled theory with $Λ_0\neq 0$, we also obtain one class of asymptotically flat extremal black hole solutions in general dimensions. This is possible because the parameters $(m^2,γ_4)$ take certain values such that $V=0$. In particular, we find that the vector also forms thermodynamic conjugates with the graviton mode and contributes to the corresponding first laws, although the non-minimal coupling has been turned off. Thus all the extremal black hole solutions that we obtain provide highly non-trivial examples how the first law of thermodynamics can be modified by a either minimally or non-minimally coupled vector field. We also study Gauss-Bonnet gravity non-minimally coupled to a vector and obtain asymptotically flat black holes and Lifshitz black holes.

Construction of Regular Black Holes in General Relativity

We present a general procedure for constructing exact black hole solutions with electric or magnetic charges in General Relativity coupled to a nonlinear electrodynamics. We obtain a variety of two-parameter family spherically symmetric black hole solutions. In particular, the singularity at the central of the space-time can be cancelled in the parameters space and the black hole solutions become regular everywhere in the space-time. We study the global properties of the solutions and derive the first law of thermodynamics. We also generalize the procedure to include a cosmological constant and construct regular black hole solutions that are asymptotic to anti-de Sitter space-time.

Criticality in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity: Gravity without Graviton

General Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a cosmological constant allows two (A)dS spacetimes as its vacuum solutions. We find a critical point in the parameter space where the two (A)dS spacetimes coalesce into one and the linearized perturbations lack any bilinear kinetic terms. The vacuum perturbations hence loose their interpretation as linear graviton modes at the critical point. Nevertheless, the critical theory admits black hole solutions due to the nonlinear effect. We also consider Einstein gravity extended with general quadratic curvature invariants and obtain critical points where the theory has no bilinear kinetic terms for either the scalar trace mode or the transverse modes. Such critical phenomena are expected to occur frequently in general higher derivative gravities.

Exact formation of hairy planar black holes

We consider Einstein gravity minimally coupled to a scalar field with a given potential in general dimensions. We obtain large classes of static hairy planar black holes which are asymptotic to AdS space-times. In particular, for a special case $μ=(n-2)/2$, we obtain new classes of exact dynamical solutions describing black holes formation. We find there are two classes of collapse solutions. The first class solutions describe the evolution start from AdS space-time with a naked singularity at the origin. The space-time is linearly unstable and evolves into stationary black hole states even under small perturbation. The second class solutions describe the space-time spontaneously evolves from AdS vacua into stationary black hole states undergoing non-linear instability. We also discuss the global properties of all these dynamical solutions.

Global Structure of Exact Scalar Hairy Dynamical Black Holes

We study the global structure of some exact scalar hairy dynamical black holes which were constructed in Einstein gravity either minimally or non-minimally coupled to a scalar field. We find that both the apparent horizon and the local event horizon (measured in luminosity coordinate) monotonically increase with the advanced time as well as the Vaidya mass. At late advanced times, the apparent horizon approaches the event horizon and gradually becomes future outer. Correspondingly, the space-time arrives at stationary black hole states with the relaxation time inversely proportional to the $1/(n-1)$ power of the final black hole mass, where $n$ is the space-time dimension. These results strongly support the solutions describing the formation of black holes with scalar hair. We also obtain new charged dynamical solutions in the non-minimal theory by introducing an Maxwell field which is non-minimally coupled to the scalar. The presence of the electric charge strongly modifies the dynamical evolution of the space-time.

Charged Black Holes in Colored Lifshitz Spacetimes

We consider Einstein gravities coupled to a cosmological constant and $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills fields in four and five dimensions. We find that the theories admit colored Lifshitz solutions with dynamic exponents $z>1$. We study the wave equations of the $SU(2)$ scalar triplet in the bulk, and find that the vacuum color modifies the scaling dimensions of the dual operators. We also introduce a Maxwell field and construct exact solutions of electrically-charged black holes that asymptote to the $D=4$, $z=3$ and $D=5$, $z=4$ colored Lifshitz spacetimes. We derive the thermodynamical first law for general colored and charged Lifshitz black holes.

Charged Black Holes with Scalar Hair

We consider a class of Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theories, in which the dilaton coupling to the Maxwell field is not the usual single exponential function, but one with a stationary point. The theories admit two charged black holes: one is the Reissner-Nordstrøm (RN) black hole and the other has a varying dilaton. For a given charge, the new black hole in the extremal limit has the same AdS$_2\times$Sphere near-horizon geometry as the RN black hole, but it carries larger mass. We then introduce some scalar potentials and obtain exact charged AdS black holes. We also generalize the results to black $p$-branes with scalar hair.

Electrically-Charged Lifshitz Spacetimes, and Hyperscaling Violations

Electrically-charged Lifshitz spacetimes are hard to come by. In this paper, we construct a class of such solutions in five dimensional Einstein gravity coupled to Maxwell and $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills fields. The solutions are electrically-charged under the Maxwell field, whose equation is sourced by the Yang-Mills instanton(-like) configuration living in the hyperbolic four-space of the Lifshitz spacetime. We then introduce a dilaton and construct charged and colored Lifshitz spacetimes with hyperscaling violations. We obtain a class of exact Lifshitz black holes. We also perform similar constructions in four dimensions.

Quasinormal modes of Gauss-Bonnet black holes at large D

Einstein's General Relativity theory simplifies dramatically in the limit that the spacetime dimension D is very large. This could still be true in the gravity theory with higher derivative terms. In this paper, as the first step to study the gravity with a Gauss-Bonnet(GB) term, we compute the quasi-normal modes of the spherically symmetric GB black hole in the large D limit. When the GB parameter is small, we find that the non-decoupling modes are the same as the Schwarzschild case and the decoupled modes are slightly modified by the GB term. However, when the GB parameter is large, we find some novel features. We notice that there are another set of non-decoupling modes due to the appearance of a new plateau in the effective radial potential. Moreover, the effective radial potential for the decoupled vector-type and scalar-type modes becomes more complicated. Nevertheless we manage to compute the frequencies of the these decoupled modes analytically. When the GB parameter is neither very large nor very small, though analytic computation is not possible, the problem is much simplified in the large D expansion and could be numerically treated. We study numerically the vector-type quasinormal modes in this case.

Static and Dynamic Hairy Planar Black Holes

We consider Einstein gravity in general dimensions, coupled to a scalar field either minimally or non-minimally, together with a generic scalar potential. By making appropriate choices of the scalar potential, we obtain large classes of new scalar hairy black holes that are asymptotic to anti-de Sitter spacetimes in planar coordinates. For some classes of solutions, we can promote the scalar charge to be dependent on the advanced or retarded times in the Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates, and obtain exact dynamic solutions. In particular, one class of the collapse solutions describe the evolution from the AdS vacua to some stable black hole states, driven by a conformally-massless scalar. It is an explicit demonstration of nonlinear instability of the AdS vacuum that is stable at the linear level.

SU(2)-Colored (A)dS Black Holes in Conformal Gravity

We consider four-dimensional conformal gravity coupled to the U(1) Maxwell and SU(2) Yang-Mills fields. We study the structure of general black hole solutions carrying five independent parameters: the mass, the electric U(1) and magnetic SU(2) charges, the massive spin-2 charge and the thermodynamical pressure associated with the cosmological constant, which is an integration constant in conformal gravity. We derive the thermodynamical first law of the black holes. We obtain some exact solutions including an extremal black hole with vanishing mass and entropy, but with non-trivial SU(2) Yang-Mills charges. We derive the remainder of the first law for this special solution. We also reexamine the colored black holes and derive their first law in Einstein-Yang-Mills gravity with or without a cosmological constant.

Thermodynamical First Laws of Black Holes in Quadratically-Extended Gravities

Einstein gravities in general dimensions coupled to a cosmological constant and extended with quadratic curvature invariants admit a variety of black holes that may asymptote to Minkowski, anti-de Sitter or Lifshitz spacetimes. We adopt the Wald formalism to derive an explicit formula for calculating the thermodynamical first law for the static black holes with spherical/toric/hyperbolic isometries in these theories. This allows us to derive/rederive the first laws for a wide range of black holes in literature. Furthermore, we construct many new exact solutions and obtain their first laws.

Exact fermionic Green's functions from holograpny

We construct a series of charged dilatonic black holes which share zero entropy in the zero temperature limit using Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theories. In these black holes, the wave functions and the Green's functions of massless fermions can be solved exactly in terms of special functions in the phase space of $(ω,k)$. We observe that for sufficiently large charge, there are many poles in the Green's function with vanishing $ω$, which strongly signifies that Fermi surfaces exist in these holographic systems. The new distinguishing properties of the Green's function arising in these systems were illustrated with great details. We also study the poles motion of the Green's function for arbitrary (complex) frequency. Our analytic results provide a more realistic and elegant approach to study strongly correlated fermionic systems using gauge/gravity duality.
