Logarithmic Fourier decay for self conformal measures

We prove that the Fourier transform of a self conformal measure on $\mathbb{R}$ decays to $0$ at infinity at a logarithmic rate, unless the following holds: The underlying IFS is smoothly conjugated to an IFS that both acts linearly on its attractor and contracts by scales that are not Diophantine. Our key technical result is an effective version of a local limit Theorem for cocycles with moderate deviations due to Benoist-Quint (2016), that is of independent interest.

Polynomial effective equidistribution

We prove effective equidistribution theorems, with polynomial error rate, for orbits of the unipotent subgroups of $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb R)$ in arithmetic quotients of $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb C)$ and $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb R)\times\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb R)$. The proof is based on the use of a Margulis function, tools from incidence geometry, and the spectral gap of the ambient space.

Global smooth and topological rigidity of hyperbolic lattice actions

In this article we prove global rigidity results for hyperbolic actions of higher-rank lattices. Suppose $Γ$ is a lattice in semisimple Lie group, all of whose factors have rank $2$ or higher. Let $α$ be a smooth $Γ$-action on a compact nilmanifold $M$ that lifts to an action on the universal cover. If the linear data $ρ$ of $α$ contains a hyperbolic element, then there is a continuous semiconjugacy intertwining the actions of $α$ and $ρ$, on a finite-index subgroup of $Γ$. If $α$ is a $C^\infty$ action and contains an Anosov element, then the semiconjugacy is a $C^\infty$ conjugacy. As a corollary, we obtain $C^\infty$ global rigidity for Anosov actions by cocompact lattices in semisimple Lie group with all factors rank $2$ or higher. We also obtain global rigidity of Anosov actions of $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb Z)$ on $\mathbb T^n$ for $ n\geq 5$ and probability-preserving Anosov actions of arbitrary higher-rank lattices on nilmanifolds.

Smooth ergodic theory of $\mathbb{Z}^d$-actions

In the first part of this paper, we formulate a general setting in which to study the ergodic theory of differentiable $\mathbb{Z}^d$-actions preserving a Borel probability measure. This framework includes actions by $C^{1+\text{Hölder}}$ diffeomorphisms of compact manifolds. We construct intermediate and coarse unstable manifolds for the action and establish controls on their local geometry. In the second part we consider the relationship between entropy, Lyapunov exponents, and the geometry of conditional measures for rank-1 systems given by a number of generalizations of the Ledrappier--Young entropy formula. In the third part, for a smooth action of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ preserving a Borel probability measure, we show that entropy satisfies a certain "product structure" along coarse unstable manifolds. Moreover, given two smooth $\mathbb{Z}^d$-actions---one of which is a measurable factor of the other---we show that all coarse Lyapunov exponents contributing to the entropy of the factor system are coarse Lyapunov exponents of the total system. As a consequence, we derive an Abramov--Rohlin formula for entropy subordinated to coarse unstable manifolds.

Multi-invariant measures and subsets on nilmanifolds

Given a $\mathbb Z^r$-action $α$ on a nilmanifold $X$ by automorphisms and an ergodic $α$-invariant probability measure $μ$, we show that $μ$ is the uniform measure on $X$, unless modulo finite index modification, one of the following obstructions occurs for an algebraic factor action: 1. The factor measure has zero entropy under every element of the action; 2. The factor action is virtually cyclic. We also deduce a rigidity property for invariant closed subsets.

Remarks on Euclidean Minima

The Euclidean minimum $M(K)$ of a number field $K$ is an important numerical invariant that indicates whether $K$ is norm-Euclidean. When $K$ is a non-CM field of unit rank 2 or higher, Cerri showed $M(K)$, as the supremum in the Euclidean spectrum $Spec(K)$, is isolated and attained and can be computed in finite time. We extend Cerri's works by applying recent dynamical results of Lindenstrauss and Wang. In particular, the following facts are proved: (1) For any number field $K$ of unit rank 3 or higher, $M(K)$ is isolated and attained and Cerri's algorithm computes $M(K)$ in finite time. (2) If $K$ is a non-CM field of unit rank 2 or higher, then the computational complexity of $M(K)$ is bounded in terms of the degree, discriminant and regulator of $K$.

Rigidity of Commutative Non-hyperbolic Actions by Toral Automorphisms

Berend gives necessary and sufficient conditions on a $Z^r$-action $α$ on a torus $T^d$ by toral automorphisms in order for every orbit be either finite or dense. One of these conditions is that on every common eigendirection of the $Z^r$-action there is an element $\mathbf n \in Z^r$ so that $α^\mathbf n$ expands this direction. In this paper, we investigate what happens when this condition is removed; more generally, we consider a partial orbit $\{α^\mathbf n.x : \mathbf n \in Ω\}$ where $Ω$ is a set of elements which acts approximately as the identity on a given set of eigendirections. This analysis is used in an essential way in the work of the author with E. Lindenstrauss classifying topological self-joinings of maximal $Z^r$-actions on tori for $r\geq 3$.

Quantitative Density under Higher Rank Abelian Algebraic Toral Actions

We generalize Bourgain-Lindenstrauss-Michel-Venkatesh's recent one-dimensional quantitative density result to abelian algebraic actions on higher dimensional tori. Up to finite index, the group actions that we study are conjugate to the action of $U_K$, the group of units of some non-CM number field $K$, on a compact quotient of $K\otimes_{\mathbb Q}\mathbb R$. In such a setting, we investigate how fast the orbit of a generic point can become dense in the torus. This effectivizes a special case of a theorem of Berend; and is deduced from a parallel measure-theoretical statement which effectivizes a special case of a result by Katok-Spatzier. In addition, we specify two numerical invariants of the group action that determine the quantitative behavior, which have number-theoretical significance.
