Logarithmic Fourier decay for self conformal measures

We prove that the Fourier transform of a self conformal measure on $\mathbb{R}$ decays to $0$ at infinity at a logarithmic rate, unless the following holds: The underlying IFS is smoothly conjugated to an IFS that both acts linearly on its attractor and contracts by scales that are not Diophantine. Our key technical result is an effective version of a local limit Theorem for cocycles with moderate deviations due to Benoist-Quint (2016), that is of independent interest.

Abelian Livshits theorems and geometric applications

We introduce a notion of abelian cohomology in the context of smooth flows. This is an equivalence relation which is weaker than the standard cohomology equivalence relation for flows. We develop Livshits theory for abelian cohomology over transitive Anosov flows. In particular, we prove an abelian Livshits theorem for homologically full Anosov flows. Then we apply this theorem to strengthen marked length spectrum rigidity for negatively curved surfaces. We also present an application to rigidity of contact Anosov flows. Some new results on homologically full Anosov flows are also given.

Surgery for partially hyperbolic dynamical systems II. Blow-up of a complex curve

In this paper we use the blow-up surgery introduced in [G] to produce new higher dimensional partially hyperbolic flows. The main contribution of the paper is the slow-down construction which accompanies the blow-up construction. This new ingredient allows to dispose of a rather strong domination assumption which was crucial for results in [G]. Consequently we gain more flexibility which allows to construct new volume-preserving partially hyperbolic flows as well as new examples which are not fiberwise Anosov. The latter are produced by starting with the geodesic flow on complex hyperbolic manifold which admits a totally geodesic complex curve. Then by performing the slow-down first and the blow-up second we obtain a new (volume-preserving) partially hyperbolic flows.

Anomalous Anosov flows revisited

This paper is devoted to higher dimensional Anosov flows and consists of two parts. In the first part, we investigate fiberwise Anosov flows on affine torus bundles which fiber over 3-dimensional Anosov flows. We provide a dichotomy result for such flows --- they are either suspensions of Anosov diffeomorphisms or the stable and unstable distributions have equal dimensions. In the second part, we give a new surgery type construction of Anosov flows, which yields non-transitive Anosov flows in all odd dimensions.

Global smooth and topological rigidity of hyperbolic lattice actions

In this article we prove global rigidity results for hyperbolic actions of higher-rank lattices. Suppose $Γ$ is a lattice in semisimple Lie group, all of whose factors have rank $2$ or higher. Let $α$ be a smooth $Γ$-action on a compact nilmanifold $M$ that lifts to an action on the universal cover. If the linear data $ρ$ of $α$ contains a hyperbolic element, then there is a continuous semiconjugacy intertwining the actions of $α$ and $ρ$, on a finite-index subgroup of $Γ$. If $α$ is a $C^\infty$ action and contains an Anosov element, then the semiconjugacy is a $C^\infty$ conjugacy. As a corollary, we obtain $C^\infty$ global rigidity for Anosov actions by cocompact lattices in semisimple Lie group with all factors rank $2$ or higher. We also obtain global rigidity of Anosov actions of $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb Z)$ on $\mathbb T^n$ for $ n\geq 5$ and probability-preserving Anosov actions of arbitrary higher-rank lattices on nilmanifolds.

Partially hyperbolic dynamics in dimension 3

Partial hyperbolicity appeared in the sixties as a natural generaliza- tion of hyperbolicity. In the last 20 years in this area there has been great activity. Here we survey the state of the art in some topics, focusing especially in partial hyperbolicity in dimension 3. The reason for this is not only that it is the smallest dimension in which non-degenerate partial hyperbolicity can occur, but also that the topology of 3-manifolds influences this dynamics in revealing ways.

Smooth ergodic theory of $\mathbb{Z}^d$-actions

In the first part of this paper, we formulate a general setting in which to study the ergodic theory of differentiable $\mathbb{Z}^d$-actions preserving a Borel probability measure. This framework includes actions by $C^{1+\text{Hölder}}$ diffeomorphisms of compact manifolds. We construct intermediate and coarse unstable manifolds for the action and establish controls on their local geometry. In the second part we consider the relationship between entropy, Lyapunov exponents, and the geometry of conditional measures for rank-1 systems given by a number of generalizations of the Ledrappier--Young entropy formula. In the third part, for a smooth action of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ preserving a Borel probability measure, we show that entropy satisfies a certain "product structure" along coarse unstable manifolds. Moreover, given two smooth $\mathbb{Z}^d$-actions---one of which is a measurable factor of the other---we show that all coarse Lyapunov exponents contributing to the entropy of the factor system are coarse Lyapunov exponents of the total system. As a consequence, we derive an Abramov--Rohlin formula for entropy subordinated to coarse unstable manifolds.

Invariant Distributions for homogeneous flows

We prove that every homogeneous flow on a finite-volume homogeneous manifold has countably many independent invariant distributions unless it is conjugate to a linear flow on a torus. We also prove that the same conclusion holds for every affine transformation of a homogenous space which is not conjugate to a toral translation. As a part of the proof, we have that any smooth partially hyperbolic flow on any compact manifold has countably many distinct minimal sets, hence countably many distinct ergodic probability measures. As a consequence, the Katok and Greenfield-Wallach conjectures hold in all of the above cases.

Measure rigidity for random dynamics on surfaces with positive entropy

Given a surface $M$ and a Borel probability measure $ν$ on the group of $C^2$-diffeomorphisms of $M$, we study $ν$-stationary probability measures on $M$. Assuming the positivity of a certain entropy, the following dichotomy is proved: either the stable distributions for the random dynamics is non-random, or the measure is SRB. In the case that $ν$-a.e. diffeomorphism preserves a common smooth measure $m$, we show that for any positive-entropy stationary measure $μ$, either there exists a $ν$-almost surely invariant $μ$-measurable line field (corresponding do the stable distributions for almost every random composition) or the measure $μ$ is $ν$-almost surely invariant and coincides with an ergodic component of $m$. To prove the above result, we introduce a skew product with surface fibers over a measure preserving transformation equipped with an increasing sub-$σ$-algebra $\hat F$. Given an invariant measure $μ$ for the skew product, and assuming the $\hat F$-measurability of the `past dynamics' and the fiber-wise conditional measures, we prove a dichotomy: either the fiber-wise stable distributions are measurable with respect to a related increasing sub-$σ$-algebra, or the measure $μ$ is fiber-wise SRB.

The Fried average entropy and slow entropy for actions of higher rank abelian groups

We consider two numerical entropy--type invariants for actions of $\Zk$, invariant under a choice of generators and well-adapted for smooth actions whose individual elements have positive entropy. We concentrate on the maximal rank case, i.e. $\Zk,\,k\ge 2$ actions on $k+1$-dimensional manifolds. In this case we show that for a fixed dimension (or, equivalently, rank) each of the invariants determines the other and their values are closely related to regulators in algebraic number fields. In particular, in contrast with the classical case of $\mathbb Z$ actions the entropies of ergodic maximal rank actions take only countably many values. Our main result is the dichotomy that is best expressed under the assumption of weak mixing or, equivalently, no periodic factors: either both invariants vanish, or their values are bounded away from zero by universal constants. Furthermore, the lower bounds grow with dimension: for the first invariant (the Fried average entropy) exponentially, and for the second (the slow entropy) linearly.

Arithmeticity and topology of smooth actions of higher rank abelian groups

We prove that any smooth action of $\mathbb Z^{m-1}, m\ge 3$ on an $m$-dimensional manifold that preserves a measure such that all non-identity elements of the suspension have positive entropy is essentially algebraic, i.e. isomorphic up to a finite permutation to an affine action on the torus or its factor by $\pm\Id$. Furthermore this isomorphism has nice geometric properties, in particular, it is smooth in the sense of Whitney on a set whose complement has arbitrary small measure. We further derive restrictions on topology of manifolds that may admit such actions, for example, excluding spheres and obtaining below estimate on the first Betti number in the odd-dimensional case.

Measure and cocycle rigidity for certain non-uniformly hyperbolic actions of higher rank abelian groups

We prove absolute continuity of "high entropy" hyperbolic invariant measures for smooth actions of higher rank abelian groups assuming that there are no proportional Lyapunov exponents. For actions on tori and infranilmanifolds existence of an absolutely continuous invariant measure of this kind is obtained for actions whose elements are homotopic to those of an action by hyperbolic automorphisms with no multiple or proportional Lyapunov exponents. In the latter case a form of rigidity is proved for certain natural classes of cocycles over the action.

preprint2010arXiv

Nonuniform measure rigidity

We consider an ergodic invariant measure $μ$ for a smooth action of $Z^k$, $k \ge 2$, on a $(k+1)$-dimensional manifold or for a locally free smooth action of $R^k$, $k \ge 2$ on a $(2k+1)$-dimensional manifold. We prove that if $μ$ is hyperbolic with the Lyapunov hyperplanes in general position and if one element of the action has positive entropy, then $μ$ is absolutely continuous. The main ingredient is absolute continuity of conditional measures on Lyapunov foliations which holds for a more general class of smooth actions of higher rank abelian groups.
