SegAssess: Panoramic quality mapping for robust and transferable unsupervised segmentation assessment

High-quality image segmentation is fundamental to pixel-level geospatial analysis in remote sensing, necessitating robust segmentation quality assessment (SQA), particularly in unsupervised settings lacking ground truth. Although recent deep learning (DL) based unsupervised SQA methods show potential, they often suffer from coarse evaluation granularity, incomplete assessments, and poor transferability. To overcome these limitations, this paper introduces Panoramic Quality Mapping (PQM) as a new paradigm for comprehensive, pixel-wise SQA, and presents SegAssess, a novel deep learning framework realizing this approach. SegAssess distinctively formulates SQA as a fine-grained, four-class panoramic segmentation task, classifying pixels within a segmentation mask under evaluation into true positive (TP), false positive (FP), true negative (TN), and false negative (FN) categories, thereby generating a complete quality map. Leveraging an enhanced Segment Anything Model (SAM) architecture, SegAssess uniquely employs the input mask as a prompt for effective feature integration via cross-attention. Key innovations include an Edge Guided Compaction (EGC) branch with an Aggregated Semantic Filter (ASF) module to refine predictions near challenging object edges, and an Augmented Mixup Sampling (AMS) training strategy integrating multi-source masks to significantly boost cross-domain robustness and zero-shot transferability. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that SegAssess achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance and exhibits remarkable zero-shot transferability to unseen masks. Boosting Camouflaged Object Detection with Dual-Task Interactive Transformer

Camouflaged object detection intends to discover the concealed objects hidden in the surroundings. Existing methods follow the bio-inspired framework, which first locates the object and second refines the boundary. We argue that the discovery of camouflaged objects depends on the recurrent search for the object and the boundary. The recurrent processing makes the human tired and helpless, but it is just the advantage of the transformer with global search ability. Therefore, a dual-task interactive transformer is proposed to detect both accurate position of the camouflaged object and its detailed boundary. The boundary feature is considered as Query to improve the camouflaged object detection, and meanwhile the object feature is considered as Query to improve the boundary detection. The camouflaged object detection and the boundary detection are fully interacted by multi-head self-attention. Besides, to obtain the initial object feature and boundary feature, transformer-based backbones are adopted to extract the foreground and background. The foreground is just object, while foreground minus background is considered as boundary. Here, the boundary feature can be obtained from blurry boundary region of the foreground and background. Supervised by the object, the background and the boundary ground truth, the proposed model achieves state-of-the-art performance in public datasets. https://github.com/liuzywen/COD

Deceptive Kernel Function on Observations of Discrete POMDP

This paper studies the deception applied on agent in a partially observable Markov decision process. We introduce deceptive kernel function (the kernel) applied to agent's observations in a discrete POMDP. Based on value iteration, value function approximation and POMCP three characteristic algorithms used by agent, we analyze its belief being misled by falsified observations as the kernel's outputs and anticipate its probable threat on agent's reward and potentially other performance. We validate our expectation and explore more detrimental effects of the deception by experimenting on two POMDP problems. The result shows that the kernel applied on agent's observation can affect its belief and substantially lower its resulting rewards; meantime certain implementation of the kernel could induce other abnormal behaviors by the agent.

Optical Control of Fluorescence through Plasmonic Eigenmode Extinction

We introduce the concept of optical control of the fluorescence yield of CdSe quantum dots through plasmon-induced structural changes in random semicontinuous nanostructured gold films. We demonstrate that the wavelength- and polarization dependent coupling between quantum dots and the semicontinuous films, and thus the fluorescent emission spectrum, can be controlled and significantly increased through the optical extinction of a selective band of eigenmodes in the films. This optical method of effecting controlled changes in the metal nanostructure allows for versatile functionality in a single sample and opens a pathway to in situ control over the fluorescence spectrum.

Far-Field Plasmonic Resonance Enhanced Nano-Particle Image Velocimetry within a Micro Channel

In this paper, a novel far-field plasmonic resonance enhanced nanoparticle-seeded Particle Image Velocimetry (nPIV) has been demonstrated to measure the velocity profile in a micro channel. Chemically synthesized silver nanoparticles have been used to seed the flow in the micro channel. By using Discrete Dipole Approximation (DDA), plasmonic resonance enhanced light scattering has been calculated for spherical silver nanoparticles with diameters ranging from 15nm to 200nm. Optimum scattering wavelength is specified for the nanoparticles in two media: water and air. The diffraction-limited plasmonic resonance enhanced images of silver nanoparticles at different diameters have been recorded and analyzed. By using standard PIV techniques, the velocity profile within the micro channel has been determined from the images.
