Bootstrapping $N_f=4$ conformal QED$_3$

We present the results of a conformal bootstrap study of the presumed unitary IR fixed point of quantum electrodynamics in three dimensions (QED$_3$) coupled to $N_f=4$ two-component Dirac fermions. Specifically, we study the four-point correlators of the $SU(4)$ adjoint fermion bilinear $r$ and the monopole of lowest topological charge $\mathcal{M}_{1/2}$. Most notably, the scaling dimensions of the fermion bilinear $r$ and the monopole $\mathcal{M}_{1/2}$ are found to be constrained into a closed island with a combination of spectrum assumptions inspired by the $1/N_f$ perturbative results as well as a novel interval positivity constraint on the next-lowest-charge monopole $\mathcal{M}_1$. Bounds in this island on the $SU(4)$ and topological $U(1)_t$ conserved current central charges $c_J$, $c_J^t$, as well as on the stress tensor central charge $c_T$, are comfortably consistent with the perturbative results. Together with the scaling dimensions, this suggests that a part of estimates from the $1/N_f$ expansion -- even at $N_f=4$ -- provide a self-consistent solution to the bootstrap crossing relations, despite some of our assumptions not being strictly justified.

Bootstrapping conformal QED$_3$ and deconfined quantum critical point

We bootstrap the deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) and 3D Quantum Electrodynamics (QED$_3$) coupled to $N_f$ flavors of two-component Dirac fermions. We show the lattice and perturbative results on the $SO(5)$ symmetric DQCP are excluded by the bootstrap bounds combined with an irrelevant condition of the lowest singlet scalar. Remarkably, we discover a new family of kinks in the 3D $SO(N)$ vector bootstrap bounds with $N\geqslant6$. We demonstrate bound coincidences between $SU(N_f)$ adjoint and $SO(N_f^2-1)$ vector bootstrap which result from a novel algebraic relation between their crossing equations. By introducing gap assumptions breaking the $SO(N_f^2-1)$ symmetry, the $SU(N_f)$ adjoint bootstrap bounds with large $N_f$ converge to the $1/N_f$ perturbative results of QED$_3$. Our results provide strong evidence that the $SO(5)$ DQCP is not continuous and the critical flavor number of QED$_3$ is slightly above $2$: $N_f^*\in(2,4)$. Bootstrap results near $N_f^*$ are well consistent with the merger and annihilation mechanism for the loss of conformality in QED$_3$.

Conformality and self-duality of $N_f=2$ QED$_3$

We study the IR phase of three dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$) coupled to $N_f=2$ flavors of two-component Dirac fermions, which has been controversial for decades. This theory has been proposed to be self-dual with symmetry enhancement $(SU(2)_f\times U(1)_t )/\mathbb{Z}_2\rightarrow O(4)$ at the IR fixed point. We focus on the four-point correlator of monopole operators with unit topological charge of $U(1)_t$. We illustrate the $O(4)\rightarrow SU(2)_f\times U(1)_t $ branching rules based on an $O(4)$ symmetric positive structure in the monopole four-point crossing equations. We use conformal bootstrap method to derive nonperturbative constraints on the CFT data and test the conformality and self-duality of $N_f=2$ QED$_3$. In particular we find the CFT data obtained from previous lattice simulations can be ruled out by introducing irrelevant assumptions in the spectrum, indicating the IR phase of $N_f=2$ QED$_3$ is not conformal.

Lesion detection in contrast enhanced spectral mammography

Background \& purpose: The recent emergence of neural networks models for the analysis of breast images has been a breakthrough in computer aided diagnostic. This approach was not yet developed in Contrast Enhanced Spectral Mammography (CESM) where access to large databases is complex. This work proposes a deep-learning-based Computer Aided Diagnostic development for CESM recombined images able to detect lesions and classify cases. Material \& methods: A large CESM diagnostic dataset with biopsy-proven lesions was collected from various hospitals and different acquisition systems. The annotated data were split on a patient level for the training (55%), validation (15%) and test (30%) of a deep neural network with a state-of-the-art detection architecture. Free Receiver Operating Characteristic (FROC) was used to evaluate the model for the detection of 1) all lesions, 2) biopsied lesions and 3) malignant lesions. ROC curve was used to evaluate breast cancer classification. The metrics were finally compared to clinical results. Results: For the evaluation of the malignant lesion detection, at high sensitivity (Se>0.95), the false positive rate was at 0.61 per image. For the classification of malignant cases, the model reached an Area Under the Curve (AUC) in the range of clinical CESM diagnostic results. Conclusion: This CAD is the first development of a lesion detection and classification model for CESM images. Trained on a large dataset, it has the potential to be used for helping the management of biopsy decision and for helping the radiologist detecting complex lesions that could modify the clinical treatment.

Symmetries of conformal correlation functions

A program of wide interest in modern conformal bootstrap studies is to numerically solve general conformal field theories, based on a critical assumption that the dynamics is encoded in the conformal four-point crossing equations and positivity condition. In this letter we propose and verify a novel algebraic property of the crossing equations which provides strong restriction for this program. We show for various types of symmetries $\cal G$, the crossing equations can be linearly converted into the $SO(N)$ vector crossing equations associated with the $SO(N)\rightarrow \cal G$ branching rules and the transformations satisfy positivity condition. The dynamics constrained by the $\cal G$-symmetric crossing equations combined with positivity condition degenerates to the $SO(N)$ symmetric cases, while the non-$SO(N)$ symmetric theories are not directly solvable without introducing the $SO(N)$ symmetry breaking assumptions on the spectrum.

Bootstrapping Veneziano Amplitude of Vasiliev Theory and $3D$ Bosonization

Three-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) with slightly broken higher spin symmetry provide an interesting laboratory to study general properties of CFTs and their roles in the AdS/CFT correspondence. In this work we compute the four-point functions at arbitrary 't Hooft coupling $λ$ in the CFTs with slightly broken higher spin symmetry. We use a bootstrap approach based on the approximate higher spin Ward identity. We show that the bootstrap equation is separated into two parts with opposite parity charges, and it leads to a recursion relation for the $λ$ expansions of the correlation functions. The $λ$ expansions terminate at order $λ^2$ and the solutions are exact in $λ$. Our work generalizes the approach proposed by Maldacena and Zhiboedov to four-point correlators, and it amounts to an on-shell study for the $3D$ Chern-Simons vector models and the Vasiliev theory in $AdS_4$. Besides, we show that the same results can also be obtained rather simply from bosonization duality of $3D$ Chern-Simons vector models. The odd term at order $O(λ)$ in the spinning four-point function relates to the free boson correlator through a Legendre transformation. This provides new evidence on the $3D$ bosonization duality at the spinning four-point function level. We expect this work can be generalized to a complete classification of general four-point functions of single trace currents.

Superconformal Partial Waves for Stress-tensor Multiplet Correlator in $4D$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs

We compute the superconformal partial waves of the four-point correlator $\langle JJJJ\rangle$, in which the external operator $J$ is the superconformal primary of the $4D$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ stress-tensor multiplet $\mathcal{J}$. We develop the superembedding formalism for the superconformal field theories (SCFTs) with extended supersymmetry. In $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs, the three-point functions $\langle \mathcal{J}\mathcal{J}\mathcal{O}\rangle$ with general multiplet $\mathcal{O}$ contain two independent nilpotent superconformal invariants and new superconformal tensor structures, which can be nicely constructed from variables in superembedding space, and the three-point functions can be solved in compact forms. We compute the superconformal partial waves corresponding to the exchange of long multiplets using supershadow approach. The results are consistent with the non-trivial constraints by decomposing the $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal blocks into $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal blocks. Our results provide the necessary ingredient to study the fascinating $4D$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs using conformal bootstrap.

The Most General $4\mathcal{D}$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ Superconformal Blocks for Scalar Operators

We compute the most general superconformal blocks for scalar operators in $4\mathcal{D}$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theories. Specifically we employ the supershadow formalism to study the four-point correlator $\langleΦ_1 Φ_2 Φ_3 Φ_4\rangle$, in which the four scalars $Φ_i$ have arbitrary scaling dimensions and R-charges with the only constraint from R-symmetry invariance of the four-point function. The exchanged operators can have arbitrary R-charges. Our results extend previous studies on $4\mathcal{D}$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconmformal blocks to the most general case, which are the essential ingredient for superconformal bootstrap, especially for bootstrapping mixed correlators of scalars with independent scaling dimensions and R-charges.

Helical Phase Inflation via Non-Geometric Flux Compactifications: from Natural to Starobinsky-like Inflation

We show that a new class of helical phase inflation models can be simply realized in minimal supergravity, wherein the inflaton is the phase component of a complex field and its potential admits a deformed helicoid structure. We find a new unique complex-valued index $χ$ that characterizes almost the entire region of the $n_s-r$ plane favored by new Planck observations. Continuously varying the index $χ$, predictions interpolate from quadratic/natural inflation parameterized by a phase/axion decay constant to Starobinsky-like inflation parameterized by the $α$-parameter. We demonstrate that the simple supergravity construction realizing Starobinsky-like inflation can be obtained from a more microscopic model by integrating out heavy fields, and that the flat phase direction for slow-roll inflation is protected by a mildly broken global $U(1)$ symmetry. %, which is mildly broken at the inflation energy scale. We study the geometrical origin of the index $χ$, and find that it corresponds to a linear constraint relating \kah moduli. We argue that such a linear constraint is a natural result of moduli stabilization in Type \MyRoman{2} orientifold compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds with geometric and non-geometric fluxes. Possible choices for the index $χ$ are discrete points on the complex plane that relate to the distribution of supersymmetric Minkowski vacua on moduli space. More precise observations of the inflationary epoch in the future may provide a better estimation of the index $χ$. Since $χ$ is determined by the fluxes and vacuum expectation values of complex structure moduli, such observations would characterize the geometry of the internal space as well.

Symmetry Breaking Indication for Supergravity Inflation in Light of the Planck 2015

The supergravity (SUGRA) theories with exact global $U(1)$ symmetry or shift symmetry in Kähler potential provide the natural frameworks for inflation. However, the quadratic inflation is disfavoured by the new results on primordial tensor fluctuations from the Planck Collaboration. To be consistent with the new Planck data, we point out that the explicit symmetry breaking is needed, and study these two SUGRA inflation in details. For the SUGRA inflation with global $U(1)$ symmetry, the symmetry breaking term leads to a trigonometric modulation on inflaton potential. The coefficient of the $U(1)$ symmetry breaking term is of the order $10^{-2}$, which is sufficient large to improve the inflationary predictions while its higher order corrections are negligible. Such models predict sizeable tensor fluctuations and highly agree with the Planck results. In particular, the model with a linear $U(1)$ symmetry breaking term predicts the tensor-to-scalar ratio around $\textbf{r}\sim0.01$ and running spectral index $α_s\sim-0.004$, which comfortably fit with the Planck observations. For the SUGRA inflation with breaking shift symmetry, the inflaton potential is modulated by an exponential factor. The modulated linear and quadratic models are consistent with the Planck observations. In both kinds of models the tensor-to-scalar ratio can be of the order $10^{-2}$, which will be tested by the near future observations.

Aligned Natural Inflation and Moduli Stabilization from Anomalous $U(1)$ Gauge Symmetries

To obtain natural inflation with large tensor-to-scalar ratio in string framework, we need a special moduli stabilization mechanism which can separate the masses of real and imaginary components of Kähler moduli at different scales, and achieve a trans-Planckian axion decay constant from sub-Planckian axion decay constants. In this work, we stabilize the matter fields by F-terms and the real components of Kähler moduli by D-terms of two anomalous $U(1)_X\times U(1)_A$ symmetries strongly at high scales, while the corresponding axions remain light due to their independence on the Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term in moduli stabilization. The racetrack-type axion superpotential is obtained from gaugino condensations of the hidden gauge symmetries $SU(n)\times SU(m)$ with massive matter fields in the bi-fundamental respresentations. The axion alignment via Kim-Nilles-Pelroso (KNP) mechanism corresponds to an approximate $S_2$ exchange symmetry of two Kähler moduli in our model, and a slightly $S_2$ symmetry breaking leads to the natural inflation with super-Planckian decay constant.

Chaotic Inflation in No-Scale Supergravity with String Inspired Moduli Stabilization

The simple chaotic inflation is highly consistent with the BICEP2 experiment, and no-scale supergravity can be realized naturally in various string compactifications. Thus, we construct a chaotic inflation model in no-scale supergravity inspired from Type IIB string compactification with an anomalous U(1)_X gauged symmetry. We introduce two moduli T_1 and T_2 which transform non-trivially under U(1)_X, and some pairs of fundamental quarks charged under the SU(N) x U(1)_X gauge group. The non-trivial transformations of moduli under U(1)_X lead to a moduli-dependent Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term. The modulus T_2 and the real component of T_1 are stabilized by the non-perturbative effect from quark condensation and the U(1)_X D-term. In particular, the stabilization from the anomalous U(1)_X D-term with moduli-dependent FI term is crucial for inflation since it gives heavy mass to the real component of the modulus T_1 while keeping its axionic part light. Choosing the proper parameters, we obtain a global Minkowski vacuum where the imaginary part of T_1 has a quadratic potential for chaotic inflation.

Helical Phase Inflation

We show that the quadratic inflation can be realized by the phase of a complex field with helicoid potential. Remarkably, this helicoid potential can be simply realized in minimal supergravity. The global $U(1)$ symmetry of the Kähler potential introduces a flat direction and evades the $η$ problem automatically. So such inflation is technically natural. The phase excursion is super-Planckian as required by the Lyth bound, while the norm of the complex field can be suppressed in the sub-Planckian region. This model resolves the ultraviolet sensitive problem of the large field inflation, besides, it also provides a new type of monodromy inflation in supersymmetric field theory with consistent field stabilization.

Helical Phase Inflation and Monodromy in Supergravity Theory

We study helical phase inflation in supergravity theory in details. The inflation is driven by the phase component of a complex field along helical trajectory. The helicoid structure originates from the monodromy of superpotential with an singularity at origin. We show that such monodromy can be formed by integrating out heavy fields in supersymmetric field theory. The supergravity corrections to the potential provide strong field stabilizations for the scalars except inflaton, therefore the helical phase inflation accomplishes the "monodromy inflation" within supersymmetric field theory. The phase monodromy can be easily generalized for natural inflation, in which the super-Planckian phase decay constant is realized with consistent field stabilization. The phase-axion alignment is fulfilled indirectly in the process of integrating out the heavy fields. Besides, we show that the helical phase inflation can be naturally realized in no-scale supergravity with $SU(2,1)/SU(2)\times U(1)$ symmetry since the no-scale Kähler potential provides symmetry factors of phase monodromy directly. We also demonstrate that the helical phase inflation can reduce to the shift symmetry realization of supergravity inflation. The super-Planckian field excursion is accomplished by the phase component, which admits no dangerous polynomial higher order corrections. The helical phase inflation process is free from the UV-sensitivity problem, and it suggests that inflation can be effectively studied in supersymmetric field theory close to the unification scale in Grand Unified Theory and a UV-completed frame is not prerequisite.

Natural Inflation with Natural Trans-Planckian Axion Decay Constant from Anomalous $U(1)_X$

We propose a natural inflation model driven by an imaginary or axionic component of a Kähler modulus in string-inspired supergravity. The shift symmetry of the axion is gauged under an anomalous $U(1)_X$ symmetry, which leads to a modulus-dependent Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term. The matter fields are stabilized by F-terms, and the real component of the modulus is stabilized by the $U(1)_X$ D-term, while its axion remains light. Therefore, the masses of real and imaginary components of the modulus are separated at different scales. The scalar potential for natural inflation is realized by the superpotential from the non-perturbative effects. The trans-Planckian axion decay constant, which is needed to fit with BICEP2 observations, can be obtained naturally in this model.

No-Scale Ripple Inflation Revisited

We revisit the no-scale ripple inflation model, where no-scale supergravity is modified by an additional term for the inflaton field in the Kahler potential. This term not only breaks one SU(N,1) symmetry explicitly, but also plays an important role for inflation. We generalize the superpotential in the no-scale ripple inflation model slightly. There exists a discrete Z_2 symmetry/parity in the scalar potential in general, which can be preserved or violated by the non-canonical nomalized inflaton kinetic term. Thus, there are three inflation paths: one parity invariant path, and the left and right paths for parity violating scenario. We show that the inflations along the parity invariant path and right path are consistent with the Planck results. However, the gavitino mass for the parity invariant path is so large that the inflation results will be invalid if we consider the inflaton supersymmetry breaking soft mass term. Thus, only the inflation along the right path gives the correct and consistent results. Notably, the tensor-to-scalar ratio in such case can be large, with a value around 0.05, which may be probed by the future Planck experiment.

Supergravity Inflation with Broken Shift Symmetry and Large Tensor-to-Scalar Ratio

We propose a class of inflation models with potential V(ϕ)=αϕ^n exp(-β^m ϕ^m). We show that such kind of inflaton potentials can be realized in supergravity theory with a small shift symmetry breaking term in the Kähler potential. We find that the models with (m=1, n=1), (m=1, n=2), (m=2, n=1), and (m=2, n=3/2) can easily accommodate the Planck results. In particular, the tensor-to-scalar ratio is larger than 0.01 in the 1σregion. Thus, these models generate the typical large field inflation, and can be tested at the future Planck and QUBIC experiments.
