Aging transition under discrete time-dependent coupling: Restoring rhythmicity from aging

We explore the aging transition in a network of globally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators under a discrete time-dependent coupling. In this coupling, the connections among the oscillators are turned ON and OFF in a systematic manner, having either a symmetric or an asymmetric time interval. We discover that depending upon the time period and duty cycle of the ON-OFF intervals, the aging region shrinks drastically in the parameter space, therefore promoting restoration of oscillatory dynamics from the aging. In the case of symmetric discrete coupling (where the ON-OFF intervals are equal), the aging zone decreases significantly with the resumption of dynamism with an increasing time period of the ON-OFF intervals. On the other hand, in the case of asymmetric coupling (where the ON-OFF intervals are not equal), we find that the ratio of the ON and OFF intervals controls the aging dynamics: the aging state is revoked more effectively if the interval of the OFF state is greater than the ON state. Finally, we study the transition in aging using a discrete pulse coupling: we note that the pulse interval plays a crucial role in determining the aging region. For all the cases of discrete time-dependent couplings, the aging regions are shrinking and the rhythmicity gets enhanced in a controlled manner. Our findings suggest that this type of coupling can act as a noninvasive way to restore the oscillatory dynamics from an aging state in a network of coupled oscillators.

Collective dynamics of identical phase oscillators with high-order coupling

In this paper, we propose a framework to investigate the collective dynamics in ensembles of globally coupled phase oscillators when higher-order modes dominate the coupling. The spatiotemporal properties of the attractors in various regions of parameter space are analyzed. Furthermore, a detailed linear stability analysis proves that the stationary symmetric distribution is only neutrally stable in the marginal regime which stems from the generalized time-reversal symmetry. Moreover, the critical parameters of the transition among various regimes are determined analytically by both the Ott-Antonsen method and linear stability analysis, the transient dynamics are further revealed in terms of the characteristic curves method. Finally, for the more general initial condition the symmetric dynamics could be reduced to a rigorous three-dimensional manifold which shows that the neutrally stable chaos could also occur in this model for particular parameter. Our theoretical analysis and numerical results are consistent with each other, which can help us understand the dynamical properties in general system with higher-order harmonics couplings.

Dynamics of phase oscillators in the Kuramoto model with generalized frequency-weighted coupling

We generalize the Kuramoto model for the synchronization transition of globally coupled phase oscillators to populations by incorporating an additional heterogeneity with the coupling strength, where each oscillator pair interacts with different coupling strength weighted by a genera; function of their natural frequency. The expression for the critical coupling can be straightforwardly extended to a generalized explicit formula analytically, and s self-consistency approach is developed to predict the stationary states in the thermodynamic limit. The landau damping effect is further revealed by means of the linear stability analysis and resonance poles theory above the critical threshold which turns to be far more generic. Furthermore, the dimensionality reduction technique of the Ott-Antonsen is implemented to capture the analytical description of relaxation dynamics of the steady states valid on a globally attracting manifold. Our theoretical analysis and numerical results are consistent with each other, which can help us understand the synchronization transition in general networks with heterogenous couplings.

Ensemble order parameter equations in star network

The OA ansatz has attracted much attention recently, infinite-dimensional Kuramoto model could collapses to a two-dimensional system of order differential equations with it. In this paper, we propose the ensemble order parameter (EOP) equations to describe the dynamics for networks with a finite size. To verify the effectiveness of this method, we apply it into the star network and star-connected network. In the star network, numerous phase transitions among different synchronous states are observed, three processes of synchronization, one process of de-synchronization and a group of hybrid phase transitions, the processes of those transitions are revealed by the EOP dynamics and other nolinear tools such as time reversibility analysis and linear stability analysis. Also in the star-connected network, the two-step synchronization transition is observed. The process of it is still be revealed by the similar methods in the single star network.

Order parameter analysis for low-dimensional behaviors of coupled phase-oscillators

Coupled phase-oscillators are important models related to synchronization. Recently, Ott-Antonsen(OA) ansatz is developed and used to get low-dimensional collective behaviors in coupled oscillator systems. In this paper, we develop a simple and concise approach based on the equations of order parameters, namely, order parameter analysis, with which we point out that the OA ansatz is rooted in the dynamical symmetry of the order parameters. With our approach the scope of the OA ansatz is identified as two conditions, i.e., infinite size of the system and only three nonzero Fourier coefficients of the coupling function. Coinciding with each of the conditions, a distinctive system out of the scope is taken into account and discussed with the order parameter analysis. Two approximation methods are introduced respectively, namely the ensemble approach and the dominating-term assumption.

Synchronization of phase oscillators with frequency-weighted coupling

Recently, the first-order synchronization transition has been studied in systems of coupled phase oscillators. In this paper, we propose a framework to investigate the synchronization in the frequency-weighted Kuramoto model with all-to-all couplings. A rigorous mean-field analysis is implemented to predict the possible steady states. Furthermore, a detailed linear stability analysis proves that the incoherent state is only neutrally stable below the synchronization threshold. Nevertheless, interestingly, the amplitude of the order parameter decays exponentially (at least for short time) in this regime, resembling the Landau damping effect in plasma physics. Moreover, the explicit expression for the critical coupling strength is determined by both the mean-field method and linear operator theory. The mechanism of bifurcation for the incoherent state near the critical point is further revealed by the amplitude expansion theory, which shows that the oscillating standing wave state could also occur in this model for certain frequency distributions. Our theoretical analysis and numerical results are consistent with each other, which can help us understand the synchronization transition in general networks with heterogenous couplings.

Dynamics of Rotator Chain with Dissipative Boundary

We study the deterministic dynamics of rotator chain that subjected to purely mechanical driving on the boundary by stability analysis and numerical simulation. Globally synchronous rotation, clustered synchronous rotation, and split synchronous rotation states are identified. In particular, we find that the single-peaked variance distribution of angular momenta is the consequence of the deterministic dynamics. As a result, the operational definition of temperature used in the previous studies on rotator chain should be revisited.

Explosive or Continuous: Incoherent state determines the route to synchronization

Collective behaviors of coupled oscillators have attracted much attention. In this Letter, we propose an ensemble order parameter(EOP) equation that enables us to grasp the essential low-dimensional dynamical mechanism of the explosive synchronization in heterogeneous networks. Dif- ferent solutions of the EOP equation build correspondences with diverse collective states, and different bifurcations reveal various transitions among these collective states. The structural relationship between the incoherent state and synchronous state leads to different routes of transitions to synchronization, either continuous or discontinuous. The explosive synchronization is determined by the bistable state where the measure of each state and the critical points are obtained analytically by using the EOP equation. Our method and results hold for heterogeneous networks with star graph motifs such as scale-free networks, and hence, provide an effective approach in understanding the routes to synchronization in more general complex networks.

Solving the inverse problem of noise-driven dynamic networks

Nowadays massive amount of data are available for analysis in natural and social systems. Inferring system structures from the data, i.e., the inverse problem, has become one of the central issues in many disciplines and interdisciplinary studies. In this Letter, we study the inverse problem of stochastic dynamic complex networks. We derive analytically a simple and universal inference formula called double correlation matrix (DCM) method. Numerical simulations confirm that the DCM method can accurately depict both network structures and noise correlations by using available kinetic data only. This inference performance was never regarded possible by theoretical derivation, numerical computation and experimental design.

Loss of stability of a solitary wave through exciting a cnoidal wave on a Fermi-Pasta-Ulam ring

The spatiotemporal propagation behavior of a solitary wave is investigated on a Fermi-Pasta-Ulam ring. We observe the emergence of a cnoidal wave excited by the solitary wave. The cnoidal wave may coexist with the solitary wave for a long time associated with the periodic exchange of energy between these two nonlinear waves. The module of the cnoidal wave, which is considered as an indicator of the nonlinearity, is found to oscillate with the same period of the energy exchange. After the stage of coexistence, the interaction between these two nonlinear waves leads to the destruction of the cnoidal wave by the radiation of phonons. Finally, the interaction of the solitary wave with phonons leads to the loss of stability of the solitary wave.

Propagation dynamics on the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattices

The spatiotemporal propagation of a momentum excitation on the finite Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattices is investigated. The competition between the solitary wave and phonons gives rise to interesting propagation behaviors. For a moderate nonlinearity, the initially excited pulse may propagate coherently along the lattice for a long time in a solitary wave manner accompanied by phonon tails. The lifetime of the long-transient propagation state exhibits a sensitivity to the nonlinear parameter. The solitary wave decays exponentially during the final loss of stability, and the decay rate varying with the nonlinear parameter exhibits two different scaling laws. This decay is found to be related to the largest Lyapunov exponent of the corresponding Hamiltonian system, which manifests a transition from weak to strong chaos. The mean-free-path of the solitary waves is estimated in the strong chaos regime, which may be helpful to understand the origin of anomalous conductivity in the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattice.

Quantum Dynamics of Mesoscopic Driven Duffing Oscillators

We investigate the nonlinear dynamics of a mesoscopic driven Duffing oscillator in a quantum regime. In terms of Wigner function, we identify the nature of state near the bifurcation point, and analyze the transient process which reveals two distinct stages of quenching and escape. The rate process in the escape stage allows us to extract the transition rate, which displays perfect scaling behavior with the driving distance to the bifurcation point. We numerically determine the scaling exponent, compare it with existing result, and propose open questions to be resolved.
