An FPGA-based Trigger System for CSHINE

A trigger system of general function is designed using the commercial module CAEN V2495 for heavy ion nuclear reaction experiment at Fermi energies. The system has been applied and verified on CSHINE (Compact Spectrometer for Heavy IoN Experiment). Based on the field programmable logic gate array (FPGA) technology of command register access and remote computer control operation, trigger functions can be flexibly configured according to the experimental physical goals. Using the trigger system on CSHINE, we carried out the beam experiment of 25 MeV/u $ ^{86}{\rm Kr}+ ^{124}{\rm Sn}$ on the Radioactive Ion Beam Line 1 in Lanzhou (RIBLL1), China. The online results demonstrate that the trigger system works normally and correctly. The system can be extended to other experiments.

On the Stability of Superheavy Nuclei

Potential energy surfaces of even-even superheavy nuclei are evaluated within the macroscopic-microscopic approximation. A very rapidly converging analytical Fourier-type shape parametrization is used to describe nuclear shapes throughout the periodic table, including those of fissioning nuclei. The Lublin Strasbourg Drop and another effective liquid-drop type mass formula are used to determine the macroscopic part of nuclear energy. The Yukawa-folded single-particle potential, the Strutinsky shell-correction method, and the BCS approximation for including pairing correlations are used to obtain microscopic energy corrections. The evaluated nuclear binding energies, fission-barrier heights, and Q-alpha energies show a relatively good agreement with the experimental data. A simple one-dimensional WKB model a la Swiatecki is used to estimate spontaneous fission lifetimes, while alpha-decay probabilities are obtained within a Gamow-type model.

Reconstruction of Fission Events in Heavy Ion Reactions with CSHINE

We report the reconstruction method of the fast fission events in 25 MeV/u $^{86}$Kr +$^{208}$Pb reactions at the Compact Spectrometer for Heavy IoN Experiment (CSHINE). The fission fragments are measured by three large-area parallel plate avalanche counters, which can deliver the position and the arrival timing information of the fragments. The start timing information is given by the radio frequency of the cyclotron. Using the velocities of the two fission fragments, the fission events are reconstructed. The broadening of both the velocity distribution and the azimuthal difference of the fission fragments decrease with the folding angle, in accordance with the picture that fast fission occurs. The anisotropic angular distribution of the fission axis also reveals consistently the dynamic feature the fission events.

Track Recognition for the $ΔE-E$ Telescopes with Silicon Strip Detectors

For the high granularity and high energy resolution, Silicon Strip Detector (SSD) is widely applied in assembling telescopes to measure the charged particles in heavy ion reactions. In this paper, we present a novel method to achieve track recognition in the SSD telescopes of the Compact Spectrometer for Heavy Ion Experiment (CSHINE). Each telescope consists of a single-sided silicon strip detector (SSSSD) and a double-sided silicon strip detector (DSSSD) backed by $3 \times 3$ CsI(Tl) crystals. Detector calibration and track reconstruction are implemented. Special decoding algorithm is developed for the multi-track recognition procedure to deal with the multi-hit effect convoluted by charge sharing and the missing signals with certain probability. It is demonstrated that the track recognition efficiency of the method is approximately 90\% and 80\% for the DSSSD-CsI and SSSSD-DSSSD events, respectively.

Fission fragment mass yields of Th to Rf even-even nuclei

Fission properties of the actinide nuclei are deduced from theoretical analysis. We investigate potential energy surfaces and fission barriers and predict the fission fragment mass-yields of actinide isotopes. The results are compared with experimental data where available. The calculations were performed in the macroscopic-microscopic approximation with the Lublin-Strasbourg Drop (LSD) for the macroscopic part and the microscopic energy corrections were evaluated in the Yukawa-folded potential. The Fourier nuclear shape parametrization is used to describe the nuclear shape, including the non-axial degree of freedom. The fission fragment mass-yields of considered nuclei are evaluated within a 3D collective model using the Born-Oppenheimer approximation.

Mass Yields of Fission Fragment of Pt to Ra Isotopes

An effective Fourier nuclear shape parametrization which describes well the most relevant degrees of freedom on the way to fission is used to construct a 3D collective model. The potential energy surface is evaluated within the macroscopic-microscopic approach based on the Lublin-Strasbourg Drop (LSD) macroscopic energy and Yukawa-folded single particle potential. A phenomenological inertia parameter is used to describe the kinetic properties of the fissioning system. The fission fragment mass yields are obtained by using an approximate solution of the underlying Hamiltonian. The predicted mass fragmentations for even-even Pt to Ra isotopes are compared with available experimental data. Their main characteristics are well reproduced when the neck rupture probability dependent on the neck radius is introduced.

A new probe to study symmetry energy at low density by deuteron breakup reaction

The reactions of nucleon and polarized deuteron scattered off a heavy target at large impact parameter with intermediate energies have been investigated by using the improved quantum molecular dynamics model. It is found that, due to the difference effect of isovector potential on proton and neutron, there is a significant difference between the angle distribution of elastic scattering protons and neutrons. To overcome the lack of monochromatic neutron beam, the reaction of polarized deuteron peripherally scattered off the heavy target is used to replace the reaction of individual proton and neutron scattered off heavy target to study the isospin effect. It is found that the distributions of elastic scattering angle of proton and neutron originating from the breakup of deuteron are very similar to the results of the individual proton- and neutron-induced reaction. A new probe more effective and more clean, namely the difference between elastic scattering angle of proton and neutron originating from the breakup of polarized deuteron, is promoted to constrain the symmetry energy at subsaturation density.

Competition between Coulomb and Symmetry Potential in Semi-peripheral Heavy-ion Collisions

The anisotropy of angular distributions of emitted nucleons and light charged particles for the asymmetric reaction system, $^{40}$Ar+$^{197}$Au, at b=6fm and $E_{beam}$=35, 50 and 100MeV/u, are investigated by using the Improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics model. The competition between the symmetry potential and Coulomb potential shows large impacts on the nucleons and light charged particles emission in projectile and target region. As a result of this competition, the angular distribution anisotropy of coalescence invariant Y(n)/Y(p) ratio at forward regions shows sensitivity to the stiffness of symmetry energy as well as the value of Y(n)/Y(p). This observable can be further checked against experimental data to understand the reaction mechanism and to extract information about the symmetry energy at subsaturation densities.

Conditioning the gamma spectrometer for activity measurement at very high background

The application of a high purity germanium (HPGe) gamma spectrometer in determining the fuel element burnup in a future reactor is studied. The HPGe detector is exposed by a Co60 source with varying irradiation rate from 10 kcps to 150 kcps to simulate the input counting rate in real reactor environment. A Cs137 and a Eu152 source are positioned at given distances to generate certain event rate in the detector with the former being proposed as a labeling nuclide to measure the burnup of fuel element. It is shown that both the energy resolution slightly increasing with the irradiation rate and the passthrough rate at high irradiation level match the requirement of the real application. The influence of the background is studied in different parameter sets used in the particularly developed procedure of the background subtraction. It is demonstrated that with the typical input irradiation rate and Cs137 intensity relevant to deep burnup situation, the precision of the Cs137 counting rate in the current experiment is consistently below 2.8%, indicating a promising feasibility of utilizing an HPGe detector in the burnup measurement in future bed-like reactor.

Circumstantial evidence for a soft nuclear symmetry energy at supra-saturation densities

Within an isospin- and momentum-dependent hadronic transport model it is shown that the recent FOPI data on the $π^-/π^+$ ratio in central heavy-ion collisions at SIS/GSI energies (Willy Reisdorf {\it et al.}, NPA {\bf 781}, 459 (2007)) provide circumstantial evidence suggesting a rather soft nuclear symmetry energy \esym at $ρ\geq 2ρ_0$ compared to the Akmal-Pandharipande-Ravenhall prediction. Some astrophysical implications and the need for further experimental confirmations are discussed.
