Cognitive computation of brain disorders based primarily on ocular responses

The present review presents multiple techniques in which ocular assessments may serve as a noninvasive approach for the early diagnoses of various cognitive and psychiatric disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), schizophrenia (SZ), and major depressive disorder (MDD). Real-time ocular responses are tightly associated with emotional and cognitive processing within the central nervous system. Patterns seen in saccades, pupillary responses, and blinking, as well as retinal microvasculature and morphology visualized via office-based ophthalmic imaging, are potential biomarkers for the screening and evaluation of cognitive and psychiatric disorders. Additionally, rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI) present a growing opportunity to use machine-learning-based AI, especially deep-learning neural networks, to shed new light on the field of cognitive neuroscience, which may lead to novel evaluations and interventions via ocular approaches for cognitive and psychiatric disorders.

Breather-like solitons extracted from the Peregrine rogue wave

Based on the Peregrine solution (PS) of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, the evolution of rational fraction pulses surrounded by zero background is investigated. These pulses display the behavior of a breather-like solitons. We study the generation and evolution of such solitons extracted, by means of the spectral-filtering method, from the PS in the model of the optical fiber with realistic values of coefficients accounting for the anomalous dispersion, Kerr nonlinearity, and higher-order effects. The results demonstrate that the breathing solitons stably propagate in the fibers. Their robustness against small random perturbations applied to the initial background is demonstrated too.

Dynamics of rogue waves on a multi-soliton background in a vector nonlinear Schrodinger equation

General higher order rogue waves of a vector nonlinear Schrodinger equation (Manakov system) are derived using a Darboux-dressing transformation with an asymptotic expansion method. The Nth order semi-rational solutions containing 3N free parameters are expressed in separation of variables form. These solutions exhibit rogue waves on a multisoliton background. They demonstrate that the structure of rogue waves in this two-component system is richer than that in a one-component system. The study of our results would be of much importance in understanding and predicting rogue wave phenomena arising in nonlinear and complex systems, including optics, fluid dynamics, Bose-Einstein condensates and finance and so on.

Initial-boundary value problems for the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the semiclassical limit

Initial-boundary value problems for integrable nonlinear partial differential equations have become tractable in recent years due to the development of so-called unified transform techniques. The main obstruction to applying these methods in practice is that calculation of the spectral transforms of the initial and boundary data requires knowledge of too many boundary conditions, more than are required make the problem well-posed. The elimination of the unknown boundary values is frequently addressed in the spectral domain via the so-called global relation, and types of boundary conditions for which the global relation can be solved are called \emph{linearizable}. For the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the global relation is only known to be explicitly solvable in rather restrictive situations, namely homogeneous boundary conditions of Dirichlet, Neumann, and Robin (mixed) type. General nonhomogeneous boundary conditions are not known to be linearizable. In this paper, we propose an explicit approximation for the nonlinear Dirichlet-to-Neumann map supplied by the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation and use it to provide approximate solutions of general nonhomogeneous boundary value problems for this equation posed as an initial-boundary value problem on the half-line. Our method sidesteps entirely the solution of the global relation. The accuracy of our method is proven in the semiclassical limit, and we provide explicit asymptotics for the solution in the interior of the quarter-plane space-time domain.
