Exploring gluon tomography with polarization dependent diffractive J/$ψ$ production

We study azimuthal asymmetries in diffractive J/$ψ$ production in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies using the color glass condensate effective theory. Our calculation successfully describes azimuthal averaged $J/ψ$ production cross section measured by STAR and ALICE. We further predict very large $\cos 2ϕ$ and $\cos 4ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetries for diffractive $J/ψ$ production both in UPCs at RHIC and LHC energies and in eA collisions at EIC energy. These novel polarization dependent observables may provide complementary information for constraining gluon transverse spatial distribution inside large nuclei. As compared to all previous analysis of diffractive $J/ψ$ production, the essential new elements integrated in our theoretical calculations are: the double-slit interference effect, the linear polarization of coherent photons, and the final state soft photon radiation effect.

Production of light antinuclei in $pp$ collisions by dynamical coalescence and their fluxes in cosmic rays near earth

Light antinucleus yields are calculated in a multiphase transport model (AMPT) coupled with a dynamical coalescence model. The model is tuned to reproduce the transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of antiproton in $pp$ collisions at $\rm \sqrt{s}$ = 7.7 GeV to 7 TeV. By applying a widely used cosmic ray propagation model, the antinucleus fluxes near the earth are estimated over a broad range of kinetic energies. Our result on the antideuteron flux is consistent with the calculations in the literature, while our upper limit on the antihelium-3 flux sits in-between calculations in the field that span an order of magnitude in its value. This study suggests that further accurate estimation of secondary antihelium-3 flux could be improved with more ground-based experiments and model simulations. Most importantly, our value of antinucleus background from hadronic source is far below the projected sensitivity of AMS-02 with 5 years of integration time, which supports the idea of searching for new physics by measurements of light antinuclei in upcoming decade.

Acoplanarity of QED pairs accompanied by nuclear dissociation in ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisions

This paper investigates the transverse momentum broadening effect for electromagnetic production of dileptons in ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisions accompanied by nuclear dissociation. The electromagnetic dissociation probability of nuclei for different neutron multiplicities is estimated, which could serve as a centrality definition (i.e. impact parameter estimate) in ultra-peripheral collisions. In the framework of lowest-order QED, the acoplanarity of dilepton pairs is calculated for different neutron emission scenarios in ultra-peripheral collisions, indicating significant impact-parameter dependence. The verification of impact-parameter dependence is crucially important to understand the broadening effect observed in hadronic heavy-ion collisions.

Exploring the double-slit interference with linearly polarized photons

The linearly polarized quasi-real photons from the highly Lorentz-contracted Coulomb fields of relativistic heavy ions can fluctuate to quark-antiquark pairs, scatter off a target nucleus and emerge as vector mesons. In the process, the two colliding nuclei can switch roles to act as photon emitter or target, forming a double-slit interference pattern. The product from photoproduction inherits the photon polarization states, leading to the asymmetries of the decay angular distributions. In this letter, we study the interference effect in polarization dimension from the asymmetries of the decay angular distributions for photoprodution in heavy-ion collisions and find a periodic oscillation with the transverse momentum of vector meson, which could reasonably explain the transverse momentum dependence of the 2nd-order modulation in azimuth for the $ρ^{0}$ decay observed by the STAR collaboration.

New opportunities at the photon energy frontier

Ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) involving heavy ions and protons are the energy frontier for photon-mediated interactions. UPC photons can be used for many purposes, including probing low-$x$ gluons via photoproduction of dijets and vector mesons, probes of beyond-standard-model processes, such as those enabled by light-by-light scattering, and studies of two-photon production of the Higgs.

Initial transverse-momentum broadening of Breit-Wheeler process in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We calculate the cross section and transverse-momentum ($P_{\bot}$) distribution of the Breit-Wheeler process in relativistic heavy-ion collisions and their dependence on collision impact parameter ($b$). To accomplish this, the Equivalent Photon Approximation (EPA) was generalized in a more differential way compared to the approach traditionally used for inclusive collisions. In addition, a lowest-order QED calculation with straightline assumption was performed as a standard baseline for comparison. The cross section as a function of $b$ is consistent with previous calculations using the equivalent one-photon distribution function. Most importantly, the $P_{\bot}$ shape from this model is strongly dependent on impact parameter and can quantitatively explain the $P_{\bot}$ broadening observed recently by RHIC and LHC experiments. This broadening effect from the initial QED field strength should be considered in studying possible trapped magnetic field and multiple scattering in a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). The impact-parameter sensitive observable also provides a controllable tool for studying extreme electromagnetic fields.

Three-dimensional Statistical Jet Fragmentation

We reproduce the distribution of the longitudinal and transverse components of momenta of charged hadrons stemming from jets created in proton-proton collisions at s^1/2 = 7 TeV by a statistical fragmentation model. Our hadronization model is based on microcanonical statistics and negative binomial multiplicity fluctuations. We describe the scale dependence of the fit parameters of the model with formulas obtained by approximating the exact solution of the DGLAP equation in the phi^3 theory with leading order splitting function and 1-loop coupling.

Systematic study of the experimental measurements on $J/ψ$ cross section and kinematic distribution in $p+p$ collisions at different energies

The world experimental data on cross section and kinematic distribution in $p+p$ and $p+A$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 6.8 - 7000 GeV are examined in systematic way. The $\sqrt{s}$ dependence of the inclusive cross section, rapidity and transverse momentum distributions are studied phenomenologically. We explore empirical formulas to obtain the total cross section, rapidity and transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) distribution. This is crucial for the interpretation of A$+$A $J/ψ$ results at RHIC when the $p+p$ reference data are not available. In addition, the cross section at mid-rapidity and transverse momentum distributions in $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 39 and 62.4 GeV are evaluated.

Disentangling Soft and Hard Hadron Yields in PbPb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 ATeV

We demonstrate that charged pion spectra in central and peripheral PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.76 ATeV obtained via perturbative quantum chromodynamics improved parton model calculations [17] can be approximated by the Tsallis distribution for transverse momenta $p_T \geq$ 4 GeV/c. Then, we propose a model in which, hadrons produced in heavy-ion collisions stem either from "soft" or "hard" processes, and are distributed according to the Tsallis distribution in both types of yields. We describe transverse spectra as well as azimuthal anisotropy ($v_2$) of charged hadrons stemming from various centrality PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.76 ATeV [40,41,42] analytically. In addition, we find that the anisotropy decreases for more central collisions.

Onset of radial flow in p+p collisions

It has been debated for decades whether hadrons emerging from p+p collisions exhibit collective expansion. The signal of the collective motion in p+p collisions is not as clear/clean as in heavy-ion collisions because of the low multiplicity and large fluctuation in p+p collisions. Tsallis Blast-Wave (TBW) model is a thermodynamic approach, introduced to handle the overwhelming correlation and fluctuation in the hadronic processes. We have systematically studied the identified particle spectra in p+p collisions from RHIC to LHC using TBW and found no appreciable radial flow in p+p collisions below $\sqrt{s}=900$ GeV. At LHC higher energy of 7 TeV in p+p collisions, the radial flow velocity achieves an average value of $<β>= 0.320\pm0.005$. This flow velocity is comparable to that in peripheral (40-60%) Au+Au collisions at RHIC. Breaking of the identified particle spectra $m_T$ scaling was also observed at LHC from a model independent test.

Systematic study of the experimental measurements on ratios of different $Υ$ states

The world data on yields and ratios of different $Υ$ states created in hadron collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 19-8000$ GeV are examined in systematic way. We find that $Υ(2S)/Υ(1S)=0.275\pm0.005$ and $Υ(3S)/Υ(1S)=0.128\pm0.004$. No signficant energy dependence of these ratios are observed within the broad collision energies. In addition, the rapidity, transverse momentum, and transverse mass dependence of these ratios are also reported.

Thermal neutron flux measurements in STAR experimental hall

We report on measurements of thermal neutron fluxes at different locations in the STAR experimental hall during pp $\sqrt s$ = 510 GeV Run 13 at RHIC. We compared these measurements with calculations based on \textsc{PYTHIA} as minimum bias events generator, the detailed GEANT3 simulation of the STAR detector and the experimental hall, and using GCALOR as neutron transport code. A good (within $\approx$ 30%) agreement was found at locations near ($\approx$1m) and very far ($\approx$10m) from the beam pipe. For intermediate locations ($\approx$ 5m) the simulation overestimates neutron flux by a factor of $\approx$3.

Hadronic Trigger using electromagnetic calorimeter and particle identification at high-pT with STAR Detector

We derive a new method to improve the statistics of identified particles at high transverse momentum (\pt) using online-triggered events by the Barrel Electro-Magnetic-Calorimeter (BEMC) detector. The BEMC is used to select hadronic interaction and energy deposit from showers created by charged hadrons ($π^{\pm},K^{\pm}$ and $p$($\bar{p}$)) in the BEMC. With this trigger, the statistics of the high \pt particles are significantly enhanced by about a factor of 100 with selection efficiency up to 20%. In addition, resonant states ($ρ^0$, $K^{\star}$) and weak-decay V0 (\Ks and \La(\aLa)) can be constructed by selecting the BEMC-trigger hadron as one of its daughters. We also show that the trigger efficiency can be obtained reliably in simulation and data-driven approaches.

Statistical Origin of Constituent-Quark Scaling in the QGP hadronization

Nonextensive statistics in a Blast-Wave model (TBW) is implemented to describe the identified hadron production in relativistic p+p and nucleus-nucleus collisions. Incorporating the core and corona components within the TBW formalism allows us to describe simultaneously some of the major observations in hadronic observables at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC): the Number of Constituent Quark Scaling (NCQ), the large radial and elliptic flow, the effect of gluon saturation and the suppression of hadron production at high transverse momentum (pT) due to jet quenching. In this formalism, the NCQ scaling at RHIC appears as a consequence of non-equilibrium process. Our study also provides concise reference distributions with a least chi2 fit of the available experimental data for future experiments and models.

Effect of final state interactions on particle production in $d$+Au collisions at RHIC

We show that particle species dependence of enhanced hadron production at intermediate transverse momentum (p_{T}) for d+Au collisions at RHIC can be understood in terms of the hadronic rescatterings in the final state. A multiphase transport model (AMPT) with two different hadronization mechanisms: string fragmentation or parton coalescence, is used in our study. When the hadrons are formed from string fragmentation, the subsequent hadronic rescatterings will result in particle mass dependence of nuclear modification factor R_{CP}, which is consistent with the present experimental data. On the other hand, in the framework of parton coalescence, the mass dependence disappears and the strangeness plays an important role. Both mechanisms failed to reproduce the p_{T} dependence of R_{CP} of pion, indicating that initial-state effects might be also important in such collisions.

Examine the species and beam-energy dependence of particle spectra using Tsallis Statistics

Tsallis Statistics was used to investigate the non-Boltzmann distribution of particle spectra and their dependence on particle species and beam energy in the relativistic heavy-ion collisions at SPS and RHIC. Produced particles are assumed to acquire radial flow and be of non-extensive statistics at freeze-out. J/psi and the particles containing strangeness were examined separately to study their radial flow and freeze-out. We found that the strange hadrons approach equilibrium quickly from peripheral to central A+A collisions and they tend to decouple earlier from the system than the light hadrons but with the same final radial flow. These results provide an alternative picture of freeze-outs: a thermalized system is produced at partonic phase; the hadronic scattering at later stage is not enough to maintain the system in equilibrium and does not increase the radial flow of the copiously produced light hadrons. The J/psi in Pb+Pb collisions at SPS is consistent with early decoupling and obtains little radial flow. The J/psi spectra at RHIC are also inconsistent with the bulk flow profile.

Improving the dE/dx calibration of the STAR TPC for the high-pT hadron identification

We derive a method to improve particle identification (PID) at high transverse momentum ($p_T$) using the relativistic rise of the ionization energy loss ($rdE/dx$) when charged particles traverse the Time Projection Chamber (TPC) at STAR. Electrons triggered and identified by the Barrel Electro-Magnetic Calorimeter (BEMC), pure protons and pions from $Λ\to p+π^{-}$ ($\barΛ\to \bar{p}+π^{+}$), and $K^{0}_{S}\toπ^{+}+π^{-}$ decays are used to obtain the $dE/dx$ value and its width at given $βγ=p/m$. We found that the deviation of the $dE/dx$ from the Bichsel function can be up to $0.4σ$ ($\sim3%$) in p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV taken and subsequently calibrated in year 2005. The deviation is approximately a function of $βγ$ independent of particle species and can be described with a function of $f(x) = A+\frac{B}{C+x^{2}}$. The deviations obtained with this method are used to re-calibrate the data sample from p+p collision for physics analysis of identified hadron spectra and their correlations up to transverse momentum of 15 GeV/$c$. The ratio of $e^{-}/e^{+}$ (dominantly from $γ$-conversion) is also used to correct the residual asymmetry in the negative and positive charged hadrons due to momentun distortion in the STAR TPC.

Spectra and radial flow at RHIC with Tsallis statistics in a Blast-Wave description

We have implemented the Tsallis statistics in a Blast-Wave model and applied it to mid-rapidity transverse-momentum spectra of identified particles measured at RHIC. This new Tsallis Blast-Wave function fits the RHIC data very well for $p_T<$3 GeV/$c$. We observed that the collective flow velocity starts from zero in p+p and peripheral Au+Au collisions growing to 0.470 $\pm$ 0.009($c$) in central Au+Au collisions. The $(q-1)$ parameter, which characterizes the degree of non-equilibrium in a system, changes from $0.100\pm0.003$ in p+p to $0.015\pm0.005$ in central Au+Au collisions, indicating an evolution from a highly non-equilibrated system in p+p collisions toward an almost thermalized system in central Au+Au collisions. The temperature and collective velocity are well described by a quadratic dependence on $(q-1)$. Two sets of parameters in our Tsallis Blast-Wave model are required to describe the meson and baryon groups separately in p+p collisions while one set of parameters appears to fit all spectra in central Au+Au collisions.

Measurement of $Δ$ and $K^{*}$ Production in $d$+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV

The measurements of the transverse momentum spectra and the invariant mass distributions of $Δ(1232)$ $\to πp$, $K^{*}(892)\to πK$ resonances in $d$+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV using the STAR Time Projection Chamber (TPC) at RHIC are presented. The in-medium modification of the $Δ$ and $K^{*}$ mass and width has been studied as a function of transverse momentum ($p_T$). The particle ratios $K^{*}/K$, $Δ/p$ and the average transverse momentum ($<p_{T}>$) as a function of different collision centrality has been reported. The nuclear modification factors ($R_{CP}$ and $R_{dAu}$) of $Δ$ and $K^{*}$ are discussed.

Resonances at RHIC

In this report, we discuss the measurement of the hadronic decay modes of resonances in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, emphasizing on RHIC results. The study of resonances can provide: (1) the yield and spectra of more particles with different properties to study whether the system is in thermal equilibrium; (2) an independent probe of the time evolution of the source from chemical to kinetic freeze-out and detailed information on hadronic interaction at later stage; (3) the study of medium effects at late stages of the collisions; (4) a measurement of flavor and baryon/meson dependence of particle production at intermediate $p_{T}$ ($>2$ GeV/$c$).

Resonance Studies at STAR

We report on the observed signals of ${K^{\star0}(892)}\toπK$ and $ϕ(1020)\to K^{+}K^{-}$ using the mixed-event method with powerful statistics from the large acceptance and highly efficient STAR TPC. Preliminary results from the first observation of such states from the year-one STAR data in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=130$ GeV Au-Au collisions are presented. The $K^{\star0}/h^{-}$ ratios with an assumed $K^{\star0}$ $p_{T}$ inverse slope of 300MeV are compatible with that from pp at ISR. For 14% central Au+Au collisions, we observe $K^{\star0}/h^{-}=0.060\pm0.007(stat)$ and $\bar{K^{\star0}}/h^{-}=0.058\pm0.007(stat)$. We show that $\barΛ/Λ=0.77\pm0.07(stat)$ from this method is consistent with the measurement via decay topology.
