Full Set of Superconducting Parameters of K$_3$C$_{60}$

The superconducting parameters are the key for building or identifying the theory responsible for the mechanism of superconductivity. Such parameters for fulleride superconductors have not been well established despite the tremendous efforts over the past 30 years. Here we provide a full set of parameters through a systematic study on a well-characterized K$_{3}$C$_{60}$ sample. The obtained high upper critical field of 33.0$\pm$0.5 T from the direct electrical transport measurements together with the relatively high critical temperature and large critical current density classifies K$_{3}$C$_{60}$ as a promising three-dimensional superconducting magnet material with the advantage of the rich carbon abundance on the Earth. This high upper critical field along with the large reduced superconducting energy gap and strong phonon self-energy effect supports the strong electron-phonon coupling interactions in this superconductor. The evaluation of all self-consistently obtained parameters suggests the unconventional nature of the superconductivity for K$_3$C$_{60}$ with the joint contributions from the strong electron-phonon coupling and electron correlations. These results and findings are important not only for fundamentally understanding the superconductivity in fullerides but also for future superconducting magnet developments and applications.

Topological Dirac states in a layered telluride TaPdTe$_5$ with quasi-one-dimensional PdTe$_2$ chains

We report the synthesis and systematic studies of a new layered ternary telluride TaPdTe5 with quasi-one-dimensional PdTe2 chains. This compound crystalizes in a layered orthorhombic structure with space group Cmcm. Analysis of its curved field-dependent Hall resistivity, using the two-band model, indicates the hole-dominated transport with a high mobility $μ_h$ = 2.38 $\times$ 10$^3$ cm$^2$ V$^{-1}$ s$^{-1}$ at low temperatures. The in-plane magnetoresistance (MR) displays significant anisotropy with field applied along the crystallographic $b$ axis. The MR with the current applied along the $c$-axis is also measured in high magnetic fields up to 51.7 T. Remarkably, it follows a power-law dependence and reaches (9.5 $\times$ 10$^3$)% at 2.1 K without any signature of saturation. The De Haas-van Alphen oscillations show a small Fermi-surface pocket with a nontrivial Berry phase. The Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations are detected at low temperatures and under magnetic fields above 28.5 T. Two effective masses $m^*$ (0.26$m_e$ and 0.41$m_e$) are extracted from the oscillatory SdH data. Our first-principles calculations unveil a topological Dirac cone in its surface states, and, in particular, the topological index indicates that TaPdTe$_5$ is a topologically nontrivial material.

Mott phase in a van der Waals transition-metal halide at single layer limit

Two-dimensional materials offer opportunities for unravelling unprecedented ordered states at single layer limit. Among such ordered states, Mott phase is rarely explored. Here, we report the Mott phase in van der Waals chromium (II) iodide (CrI2) films. High quality CrI2 films with atomically flat surface and macro size are grown on graphitized 6H-SiC(0001) substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. By in situ low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS), we reveal that the film has a band gap as large as ~3.2 eV, which is nearly thickness independent. Density functional plus dynamic mean field theory calculations suggest that CrI2 films may be a strong Mott insulator with a ferromagnetically ordered ground state. The Mott phase is corroborated by the spectral band splitting, that is consistent with the extended Hubbard model, and gap reduction at charge dopants. Our study provides a platform for studying correlated electron states at single layer limit.
