Cliques and independent subgroups of the Birkhoff polytope graph

The Birkhoff polytope ΩnΩ_n is the polytope of doubly stochastic matrices of order nn. The Birkhoff polytope graph G(Ωn)G(Ω_n) is the skeleton of ΩnΩ_n; it is the Cayley graph whose vertex set consists of the elements of the symmetric group Sym(n){\rm Sym}(n) of degree nn, where two permutations are adjacent if one equals the product of the other with a cycle. We study the combinatorial structure of this graph, focusing on its maximal and maximum cliques and on its independent subgroups (subgroups of Sym(n){\rm Sym}(n) whose elements are pairwise nonadjacent in the graph). We obtain maximal subgroups of G(Ωn)G(Ω_n) and establish both a lower bound and an upper bound for its clique number. Especially, we prove that if KK is a subset of Sym(n){\rm Sym}(n) consisting of 3-cycle permutations such that δ1−1δ2δ_1^{-1}δ_2 is a single cycle for all δ1,δ2∈Kδ_1,δ_2\in K, then the maximum size of KK is ⌊(n−1)2/4⌋\lfloor (n-1)^2/4\rfloor, which can be viewed as an Erdős-Ko-Rado-type theorem for Sym(n){\rm Sym}(n).

Linear maps on nonnegative symmetric matrices preserving the independence number

The independence number of a square matrix AA, denoted by α(A)α(A), is the maximum order of its principal zero submatrices. Let Sn+S_n^{+} be the set of n×nn\times n nonnegative symmetric matrices with zero trace. Denote by JnJ_n the n×nn\times n matrix with all entries equal to one. Given any integer nn, we prove that a linear map ϕ:Sn+→Sn+ϕ: S_n^+\rightarrow S_n^+ satisfies α(ϕ(X))=α(X)for allX∈Sn+α(ϕ(X))= α(X) {\quad\rm for~ all\quad}X\in S_n^+ if and only if there is a permutation matrix PP such that ϕ(X)=H∘(PTXP)for allX∈Sn+,ϕ(X)=H\circ(P^TXP)\quad { \rm for~ all\quad}X\in S_n^+, where H=ϕ(Jn−In)H=ϕ(J_n-I_n) with all off-diagonal entries positive.

The stable index of 0-1 matrices

We introduce the concept of stable index for 0-1 matrices. Let AA be a 0-1 square matrix. If AkA^k is a 0-1 matrix for every positive integer kk, then the stable index of AA is defined to be infinity; otherwise, the stable index of AA is defined to be the smallest positive integer kk such that Ak+1A^{k+1} is not a 0-1 matrix. We determine the maximum finite stable index of all 0-1 matrices of order nn as well as the matrices attaining the maximum finite stable index.

Linear maps preserving Ky Fan norms and Schatten norms of tensor products of matrices

For a positive integer nn, let MnM_n be the set of n×nn\times n complex matrices. Suppose ∥⋅∥\|\cdot\| is the Ky Fan kk-norm with 1≤k≤mn1 \le k \le mn or the Schatten pp-norm with 1≤p≤∞1 \le p \le \infty (p≠2p\ne 2) on MmnM_{mn}, where m,n≥2m,n\ge 2 are positive integers. It is shown that a linear map ϕ:Mmn→Mmnϕ: M_{mn} \rightarrow M_{mn} satisfying ∥A⊗B∥=∥ϕ(A⊗B)∥for allA∈MmandB∈Mn\|A\otimes B\| = \|ϕ(A\otimes B)\| \quad \hbox{for all} A \in M_m \hbox{and} B \in M_n if and only if there are unitary U,V∈MmnU, V \in M_{mn} such that ϕϕ has the form A⊗B↦U(φ1(A)⊗φ2(B))VA\otimes B \mapsto U(φ_1(A) \otimes φ_2(B))V, where φs(X)φ_s(X) is either the identity map X↦XX \mapsto X or the transposition map X↦XtX \mapsto X^t. The results are extended to tensor space Mn1⊗⋯⊗MnmM_{n_1} \otimes \cdots \otimes M_{n_m} of higher level. The connection of the problem to quantum information science is mentioned.

Linear preservers and quantum information science

Let m,n≥2m,n\ge 2 be positive integers, MmM_m the set of m×mm\times m complex matrices and MnM_n the set of n×nn\times n complex matrices. Regard MmnM_{mn} as the tensor space Mm⊗MnM_m\otimes M_n. Suppose ∣⋅∣|\cdot| is the Ky Fan kk-norm with 1≤k≤mn1 \le k \le mn, or the Schatten pp-norm with 1≤p≤∞1 \le p \le \infty (p≠2p\ne 2) on MmnM_{mn}. It is shown that a linear map ϕ:Mmn→Mmnϕ: M_{mn} \rightarrow M_{mn} satisfying ∣A⊗B∣=∣ϕ(A⊗B)∣|A\otimes B| = |ϕ(A\otimes B)| for all A∈MmA \in M_m and B∈MnB \in M_n if and only if there are unitary U,V∈MmnU, V \in M_{mn} such that ϕϕ has the form A⊗B↦U(φ1(A)⊗φ2(B))VA\otimes B \mapsto U(φ_1(A) \otimes φ_2(B))V, where φi(X)φ_i(X) is either the identity map X↦XX \mapsto X or the transposition map X↦XtX \mapsto X^t. The results are extended to tensor space Mn1⊗...⊗MnmM_{n_1} \otimes ... \otimes M_{n_m} of higher level. The connection of the problem to quantum information science is mentioned.

Physical transformations between quantum states

Given two sets of quantum states {A_1, ..., A_k} and {B_1, ..., B_k}, represented as sets of density matrices, necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for the existence of a physical transformation T, represented as a trace-preserving completely positive map, such that T(A_i) = B_i for i = 1, ..., k. General completely positive maps without the trace-preserving requirement, and unital completely positive maps transforming the states are also considered.
