On Some Solutions to Hofstadter's $V$-Recurrence

In this study, we explore the properties of certain solutions of Hofstadter's famous $V$-recurrence, defined by the nested recurrence relation $V(n)=V(n-V(n-1))+V(n-V(n-4))$. First, we discover the nature behind a finite chaotic meta-Fibonacci sequence in terms of mortality in the $V$-recurrence. Then, we construct a new kind of quasi-periodic solution which suggests a connection with another Hofstadter-Huber recursion, $H(n)= H(n-H(n-2)) + H(n-H(n-3))$.

Anderson localization in optical lattices with speckle disorder

We study the localization properties of non-interacting waves propagating in a speckle-like potential superposed on a one-dimensional lattice. Using a decimation/renormalization procedure, we estimate the localization length for a tight-binding Hamiltonian where site-energies are square-sinc-correlated random variables. By decreasing the width of the correlation function, the disorder patterns approaches a $δ$-correlated disorder, and the localization length becomes almost energy-independent in the strong disorder limit. We show that this regime can be reached for a size of the speckle grains of the order of (lower than) four lattice steps.

Localization-Delocalization Transition in the Random Dimer Model

The random-dimer model is probably the most popular model for a one-dimensional disordered system where correlations are responsible for delocalization of the wave functions. This is the primary model used to justify the insulator-metal transition in conducting polymers and in DNA. However, for such systems, the localization-delocalization regimes have only been observed by deeply modifying the system itself, including the correlation function of the disordered potential. In this article, we propose to use an ultracold atomic mixture to cross the transition simply by externally tuning the interspecies interactions, and without modifying the impurity correlations.
