Majorana versus Dirac Constraints on the Neutrino Dipole Moments

Massive neutrinos are guaranteed to have nonzero electromagnetic moments and, since there are at least three neutrino species, these dipole moments define a matrix. Here, we estimate the current upper bounds on all independent neutrino electromagnetic moments, concentrating on Earth-bound experiments and measurements with solar neutrinos, including the very recent results reported by XENONnT. We make no simplifying assumptions and compare the hypotheses that neutrinos are Majorana fermions or Dirac fermions. In particular, we fully explore constraints in the Dirac-neutrino parameter space. Majorana and Dirac neutrinos are different; for example, the upper bounds on the magnitudes of the elements of the dipole moment matrix are weaker for Dirac neutrinos, relative to Majorana neutrinos. The potential physics reach of next-generation experiments also depends on the nature of the neutrino. We find that a next-generation experiment two orders of magnitude more sensitive to the neutrino electromagnetic moments via $ν_μ$ elastic scattering may discover that the neutrino electromagnetic moments are nonzero if the neutrinos are Dirac fermions. Instead, if the neutrinos are Majorana fermions, such a discovery is ruled out by existing solar neutrino data, unless there are more than three light neutrinos.

The Forward Physics Facility: Sites, Experiments, and Physics Potential

The Forward Physics Facility (FPF) is a proposal to create a cavern with the space and infrastructure to support a suite of far-forward experiments at the Large Hadron Collider during the High Luminosity era. Located along the beam collision axis and shielded from the interaction point by at least 100 m of concrete and rock, the FPF will house experiments that will detect particles outside the acceptance of the existing large LHC experiments and will observe rare and exotic processes in an extremely low-background environment. In this work, we summarize the current status of plans for the FPF, including recent progress in civil engineering in identifying promising sites for the FPF and the experiments currently envisioned to realize the FPF's physics potential. We then review the many Standard Model and new physics topics that will be advanced by the FPF, including searches for long-lived particles, probes of dark matter and dark sectors, high-statistics studies of TeV neutrinos of all three flavors, aspects of perturbative and non-perturbative QCD, and high-energy astroparticle physics.

The Physics Case for a Neutrino Factory

Neutrino factories, neutrino beams produced in the decay of a muon or antimuon beam inside a storage ring, yield cleaner, richer, and more flexible neutrino beams relative to super-beams. We explore the physics case for this type of beam both for standard oscillation as well as new physics searches and present some machine options. We argue that there is a rich program beyond what the current neutrino program can cover and a string synergy with the muon collider program.

Measuring the Weak Mixing Angle in the DUNE Near Detector Complex

The planned DUNE experiment will have excellent sensitivity to the vector and axial couplings of the electron to the $Z$-boson via precision measurements of neutrino--electron scattering. We investigate the sensitivity of DUNE-PRISM, a movable near detector in the direction perpendicular to the beam line, and find that it will qualitatively impact our ability to constrain the weak couplings of the electron. We translate these neutrino--electron scattering measurements into a determination of the weak mixing angle at low scales and estimate that, with seven years of data taking, the DUNE near-detector can be used to measure $\sin^2θ_W$ with about 2\% precision. We also discuss the impact of combining neutrino--electron scattering data with neutrino trident production at DUNE-PRISM.

Hidden Interactions of Sterile Neutrinos As a Probe For New Physics

Recent results from neutrino experiments show evidence for light sterile neutrinos which do not have any Standard Model interactions. In this work we study the hidden interaction of sterile neutrinos with an "MeV scale" gauge boson (the $ν_s$HI model) with mass $M_X$ and leptonic coupling $g^\prime_l$. By performing an analysis on the $ν_s$HI model using the data of the MINOS neutrino experiment we find that the values above $G_X/G_F=92.4$ are excluded by more than $2σ$ C.L., where $G_F$ is the Fermi constant and $G_X$ is the field strength of the $ν_s$HI model. Using this model we can also probe other new physics scenarios. We find that the region allowed by the $(g-2)_μ$ discrepancy is entirely ruled out for $M_X\lesssim 100$ MeV. Finally, the secret interaction of sterile neutrinos has been to solve a conflict between the sterile neutrinos and cosmology. It is shown here that such an interaction is excluded by MINOS for $g^\prime_s> 1.6\times10^{-2}$. This exclusion, however, does depend on the value of $g_l^{\prime}$.

Large, Extra Dimensions at the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment

We investigate the potential of the long-baseline Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) to study large-extra-dimension (LED) models originally proposed to explain the smallness of neutrino masses by postulating that right-handed neutrinos, unlike all standard model fermion fields, can propagate in the bulk. The massive Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of the right-handed neutrino fields modify the neutrino oscillation probabilities and can hence affect their propagation. We show that, as far as DUNE is concerned, the LED model is indistinguishable from a $(3 + 3N)$-neutrino framework for modest values of $N$; $N$ = 1 is usually a very good approximation. Nonetheless, there are no new sources of $CP$-invariance violation other than one $CP$-odd phase that can be easily mapped onto the $CP$-odd phase in the standard three-neutrino paradigm. We analyze the sensitivity of DUNE to the LED framework, and explore the capability of DUNE to differentiate the LED model from the three-neutrino scenario and from a generic $(3 + 1)$-neutrino model.

Phenomenology of the Sterile Neutrinos

In this thesis we investigate several topics in neutrino physics, with an em- phasis on the phenomenology of the sterile neutrinos. We study the existence of a light sterile neutrino within the so called 3+1 scenario using the data of the medium baseline reactor experiments. We will also probe the parameters of the Large Extra Dimension model with the high energy atmospheric data of the IceCube experiment, and will find an equivalence between the Kaluza Klein modes and the sterile neutrinos. We will study the secret interaction of the ster- ile neutrinos which is proposed to solve the tension between cosmology and the sterile neutrino hypothesis. In addition to these, we will show that a minimal 2-Higgs-Doublet-Model extended with a U(1) or Z_2 symmetry cannot explain the smallness of the neutrino masses.

Probing Large Extra Dimensions With IceCube

In models with Large Extra Dimensions the smallness of neutrino masses can be naturally explained by introducing gauge singlet fermions which propagate in the bulk. The Kaluza-Klein modes of these fermions appear as towers of sterile neutrino states on the brane. We study the phenomenological consequences of this picture for the high energy atmospheric neutrinos. For this purpose we construct a detailed equivalence between a model with large extra dimensions and a (3 + n) scenario consisting of three active and n extra sterile neutrino states, which provides a clear intuitive understanding of Kaluza-Klein modes. Finally, we analyze the collected data of high energy atmospheric neutrinos by IceCube experiment and obtain bounds on the radius of extra dimensions.

Probing light sterile neutrinos in medium baseline reactor experiments

Medium baseline reactor experiments (Double Chooz, Daya Bay and RENO) provide a unique opportunity to test the presence of light sterile neutrinos. We analyze the data of these experiments in the search of sterile neutrinos and also test the robustness of theta_13 determination in the presence of sterile neutrinos. We show that existence of a light sterile neutrino state improves the fit to these data moderately. We also show that the measured value of theta_{13} by these experiments is reliable even in the presence of sterile neutrinos, and the reliability owes significantly to the Daya Bay and RENO data. From the combined analysis of the data of these experiments we constrain the mixing of a sterile neutrino with mass squared difference in the range of (10^{-3}-10^{-1}) eV^2 to sin^2 2 theta_{14} <0.1 at 95 % C.L..
