Longitudinal and transverse spin transfer to ΛΛ and Λ‾\overlineΛ hyperons in polarized pp+pp collisions at s=200\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV

The longitudinal and transverse spin transfers to ΛΛ (Λ‾\overlineΛ) hyperons in polarized proton-proton collisions are expected to be sensitive to the helicity and transversity distributions, respectively, of (anti-)strange quarks in the proton, and to the corresponding polarized fragmentation functions. We report improved measurements of the longitudinal spin transfer coefficient, DLLD_{LL}, and the transverse spin transfer coefficient, DTTD_{TT}, to ΛΛ and Λ‾\overlineΛ in polarized proton-proton collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The data set includes longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 52 pb−1^{-1}, and transversely polarized proton-proton collisions with a similar integrated luminosity. Both data sets have about twice the statistics of previous results and cover a kinematic range of ∣ηΛ(Λ‾)∣|η_{Λ(\overlineΛ)}| << 1.2 and transverse momentum pT,Λ(Λ‾)p_{T,{Λ(\overlineΛ)}} up to 8 GeV/cc. We also report the first measurements of the hyperon spin transfer coefficients DLLD_{LL} and DTTD_{TT} as a function of the fractional jet momentum zz carried by the hyperon, which can provide more direct constraints on the polarized fragmentation functions.

Pattern of Global Spin Alignment of ϕϕ and K∗0K^{*0} mesons in Heavy-Ion Collisions

Notwithstanding decades of progress since Yukawa first developed a description of the force between nucleons in terms of meson exchange, a full understanding of the strong interaction remains a major challenge in modern science. One remaining difficulty arises from the non-perturbative nature of the strong force, which leads to the phenomenon of quark confinement at distances on the order of the size of the proton. Here we show that in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, where quarks and gluons are set free over an extended volume, two species of produced vector (spin-1) mesons, namely ϕϕ and K∗0K^{*0}, emerge with a surprising pattern of global spin alignment. In particular, the global spin alignment for ϕϕ is unexpectedly large, while that for K∗0K^{*0} is consistent with zero. The observed spin-alignment pattern and magnitude for the ϕϕ cannot be explained by conventional mechanisms, while a model with a connection to strong force fields, i.e. an effective proxy description within the Standard Model and Quantum Chromodynamics, accommodates the current data. This connection, if fully established, will open a potential new avenue for studying the behaviour of strong force fields.

A hyper flare of a weeks-old magnetar born from a binary-neutron-star merger

Magnetars, a population of isolated neutron stars with ultra-strong magnetic fields of ∼1014−1015\sim 10^{14}-10^{15} G, have been increasingly accepted to explain a variety of astrophysical transients. A nascent millisecond-period magnetar can release its spin-down energy and power bright sources such as Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) and their subsequent X-ray plateaus, Super Luminous Supernovae (SLSNe), and the fast X-ray transients such as CDF-S XT-2. Magnetars with ages of 103−10410^3-10^4 years have been observed within the Milky Way Galaxy, which are found to power diverse transients with the expense of their magnetic energy, in the form of giant flares and repeated soft-γγ-ray or hard X-ray bursts and occasionally fast radio bursts (FRBs). Magnetar giant flares were also detected as disguised short GRBs from nearby galaxies . Here we report the identification of a GRB as a hyper flare of magnetar in a nearby galaxy. The magnitude of the hyper flare is about one thousand times brighter than that of a typical magnetar giant flare. A significant ∼80\sim 80 millisecond period is detected in the decaying light curve. Interpreting this period as the rotation period and given a magnetic field strength typical for a young magnetar, the age of the magnetar is constrained to be only a few weeks. The non-detection of a (superluminous) supernova nor a GRB weeks before the event further constrains that the magnetar is likely born from an off-axis merger event of two neutron stars. Our finding bridges the gap between the hypothetical millisecond magnetars and the observed Galactic magnetars, and points toward a broader channel of magnetar-powered gamma-ray transients.

Centrality and transverse momentum dependence of higher-order flow harmonics of identified hadrons in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV

We present high-precision measurements of elliptic, triangular, and quadrangular flow v2v_{2}, v3v_{3}, and v4v_{4}, respectively, at midrapidity (∣η∣<1.0|η|<1.0) for identified hadrons ππ, pp, KK, φφ, KsK_s, ΛΛ as a function of centrality and transverse momentum in Au+Au collisions at the center-of-mass energy sNN=\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}= 200 GeV. We observe similar vnv_{n} trends between light and strange mesons which indicates that the heavier strange quarks flow as strongly as the lighter up and down quarks. The number-of-constituent-quark scaling for v2v_{2}, v3v_{3}, and v4v_{4} is found to hold within statistical uncertainty for 0-10%\%, 10-40%\% and 40-80%\% collision centrality intervals. The results are compared to several viscous hydrodynamic calculations with varying initial conditions, and could serve as an additional constraint to the development of hydrodynamic models.

Differential measurements of jet substructure and partonic energy loss in Au++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}} =200 GeV

The STAR collaboration presents jet substructure measurements related to both the momentum fraction and the opening angle within jets in \pp and \AuAu collisions at \sqrtsn =200= 200 GeV. The substructure observables include SoftDrop groomed momentum fraction (\zg), groomed jet radius (\rg), and subjet momentum fraction (\zsj) and opening angle (\tsj). The latter observable is introduced for the first time. Fully corrected subjet measurements are presented for \pp collisions and are compared to leading order Monte Carlo models. The subjet \tsj~distributions reflect the jets leading opening angle and are utilized as a proxy for the resolution scale of the medium in \AuAu collisions. We compare data from \AuAu collisions to those from \pp which are embedded in minimum-bias \AuAu events in order to include the effects of detector smearing and the heavy-ion collision underlying event. The subjet observables are shown to be more robust to the background than \zg~and \rg. We observe no significant modifications of the subjet observables within the two highest-energy, back-to-back jets, resulting in a distribution of opening angles and the splittings that are vacuum-like. We also report measurements of the differential di-jet momentum imbalance (AJA_{\rm{J}}) for jets of varying \tsj. We find no qualitative differences in energy loss signatures for varying angular scales in the range 0.1<0.1 < \tsj <0.3 < 0.3, leading to the possible interpretation that energy loss in this population of high momentum di-jet pairs, is due to soft medium-induced gluon radiation from a single color-charge as it traverses the medium.

Disappearance of partonic collectivity in sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC

We report on the measurements of directed flow v1v_1 and elliptic flow v2v_2 for hadrons (π±π^{\pm}, K±K^{\pm}, KS0K_{S}^0, pp, ϕϕ, ΛΛ and Ξ−Ξ^{-}) from Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 3\,GeV and v2v_{2} for (π±π^{\pm}, K±K^{\pm}, pp and p‾\overline{p}) at 27 and 54.4\,GeV with the STAR experiment. While at the two higher energy midcentral collisions the number-of-constituent-quark (NCQ) scaling holds, at 3\,GeV the v2v_{2} at midrapidity is negative for all hadrons and the NCQ scaling is absent. In addition, the v1v_1 slopes at midrapidity for almost all observed hadrons are found to be positive, implying dominant repulsive baryonic interactions. The features of negative v2v_2 and positive v1v_1 slope at 3\,GeV can be reproduced with a baryonic mean-field in transport model calculations. These results imply that the medium in such collisions is likely characterized by baryonic interactions.

Evidence for Nonlinear Gluon Effects in QCD and their AA Dependence at STAR

The STAR Collaboration reports measurements of back-to-back azimuthal correlations of di-π0π^0s produced at forward pseudorapidities (2.6<η<4.02.6<η<4.0) in pp+pp, p+p+Al, and p+p+Au collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV. We observe a clear suppression of the correlated yields of back-to-back π0π^0 pairs in p+p+Al and p+p+Au collisions compared to the pp+pp data. The observed suppression of back-to-back pairs as a function of transverse momentum suggests nonlinear gluon dynamics arising at high parton densities. The larger suppression found in p+p+Au relative to p+p+Al collisions exhibits a dependence of the saturation scale, Qs2Q_s^2, on the mass number, AA. A linear scaling of the suppression with A1/3A^{1/3} is observed with a slope of −0.09-0.09 ±\pm 0.010.01.

First measurement of high-energy reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay

This Letter reports the first measurement of high-energy reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay, with nearly 9000 inverse beta decay candidates in the prompt energy region of 8-12~MeV observed over 1958 days of data collection. A multivariate analysis is used to separate 2500 signal events from background statistically. The hypothesis of no reactor antineutrinos with neutrino energy above 10~MeV is rejected with a significance of 6.2 standard deviations. A 29\% antineutrino flux deficit in the prompt energy region of 8-11~MeV is observed compared to a recent model prediction. We provide the unfolded antineutrino spectrum above 7 MeV as a data-based reference for other experiments. This result provides the first direct observation of the production of antineutrinos from several high-QβQ_β isotopes in commercial reactors.

Global ΛΛ-hyperon polarization in Au+Au collisions at sNN=3\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=3 GeV

Global hyperon polarization, P‾H\overline{P}_\mathrm{H}, in Au+Au collisions over a large range of collision energy, sNN\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}, was recently measured and successfully reproduced by hydrodynamic and transport models with intense fluid vorticity of the quark-gluon plasma. While naïve extrapolation of data trends suggests a large P‾H\overline{P}_\mathrm{H} as the collision energy is reduced, the behavior of P‾H\overline{P}_\mathrm{H} at small sNN<7.7\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}<7.7 GeV is unknown. Operating the STAR experiment in fixed-target mode, we measured the polarization of ΛΛ hyperons along the direction of global angular momentum in Au+Au collisions at sNN=3\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=3 GeV. The observation of substantial polarization of 4.91±0.81(stat.)±0.15(syst.)4.91\pm0.81(\rm stat.)\pm0.15(\rm syst.)% in these collisions may require a reexamination of the viscosity of any fluid created in the collision, of the thermalization timescale of rotational modes, and of hadronic mechanisms to produce global polarization.

Joint Determination of Reactor Antineutrino Spectra from 235^{235}U and 239^{239}Pu Fission by Daya Bay and PROSPECT

A joint determination of the reactor antineutrino spectra resulting from the fission of 235^{235}U and 239^{239}Pu has been carried out by the Daya Bay and PROSPECT collaborations. This Letter reports the level of consistency of 235^{235}U spectrum measurements from the two experiments and presents new results from a joint analysis of both data sets. The measurements are found to be consistent. The combined analysis reduces the degeneracy between the dominant 235^{235}U and 239^{239}Pu isotopes and improves the uncertainty of the 235^{235}U spectral shape to about 3\%. The 235{}^{235}U and 239^{239}Pu antineutrino energy spectra are unfolded from the jointly deconvolved reactor spectra using the Wiener-SVD unfolding method, providing a data-based reference for other reactor antineutrino experiments and other applications. This is the first measurement of the 235^{235}U and 239^{239}Pu spectra based on the combination of experiments at low- and highly enriched uranium reactors.

Light Nuclei Collectivity from sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 3 GeV Au+Au Collisions at RHIC

In high-energy heavy-ion collisions, partonic collectivity is evidenced by the constituent quark number scaling of elliptic flow anisotropy for identified hadrons. A breaking of this scaling and dominance of baryonic interactions is found for identified hadron collective flow measurements in sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions. In this paper, we report measurements of the first- and second-order azimuthal anisotropic parameters, v1v_1 and v2v_2, of light nuclei (dd, tt, 3^{3}He, 4^{4}He) produced in sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at the STAR experiment. An atomic mass number scaling is found in the measured v1v_1 slopes of light nuclei at mid-rapidity. For the measured v2v_2 magnitude, a strong rapidity dependence is observed. Unlike v2v_2 at higher collision energies, the v2v_2 values at mid-rapidity for all light nuclei are negative and no scaling is observed with the atomic mass number. Calculations by the Jet AA Microscopic Transport Model (JAM), with baryonic mean-field plus nucleon coalescence, are in good agreement with our observations, implying baryonic interactions dominate the collective dynamics in 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC.

Longitudinal double-spin asymmetry for inclusive jet and dijet production in polarized proton collisions at s=510\sqrt{s}=510 GeV

We report measurements of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, ALLA_{LL}, for inclusive jet and dijet production in polarized proton-proton collisions at midrapidity and center-of-mass energy s\sqrt{s} = 510 GeV, using the high luminosity data sample collected by the STAR experiment in 2013. These measurements complement and improve the precision of previous STAR measurements at the same center-of-mass energy that probe the polarized gluon distribution function at partonic momentum fraction 0.015 ≲x≲\lesssim x \lesssim 0.25. The dijet asymmetries are separated into four jet-pair topologies, which provide further constraints on the xx dependence of the polarized gluon distribution function. These measurements are in agreement with previous STAR measurements and with predictions from current next-to-leading order global analyses. They provide more precise data at low dijet invariant mass that will better constraint the shape of the polarized gluon distribution function of the proton.

Measurement of cold nuclear matter effects for inclusive J/ψJ/ψ in pp+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}} = 200 GeV

Measurement by the STAR experiment at RHIC of the cold nuclear matter (CNM) effects experienced by inclusive J/ψJ/ψ at mid-rapidity in 0-100\% pp+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}} = 200 GeV is presented. Such effects are quantified utilizing the nuclear modification factor, RpAuR_{p\mathrm{Au}}, obtained by taking a ratio of J/ψJ/ψ yield in pp+Au collisions to that in pp+pp collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. The differential J/ψJ/ψ yield in both pp+pp and pp+Au collisions is measured through the dimuon decay channel, taking advantage of the trigger capability provided by the Muon Telescope Detector in the RHIC 2015 run. Consequently, the J/ψJ/ψ RpAuR_{p\mathrm{Au}} is derived within the transverse momentum (pTp_{\mathrm{T}}) range of 0 to 10 GeV/cc. A suppression of approximately 30% is observed for pT<2p_{\mathrm{T}}<2 GeV/cc, while J/ψJ/ψ RpAuR_{p\mathrm{Au}} becomes compatible with unity for pTp_{\mathrm{T}} greater than 3 GeV/cc, indicating the J/ψJ/ψ yield is minimally affected by the CNM effects at high pTp_{\mathrm{T}}. Comparison to a similar measurement from 0-20% central Au+Au collisions reveals that the observed strong J/ψJ/ψ suppression above 3 Gev/cc is mostly due to the hot medium effects, providing strong evidence for the formation of the quark-gluon plasma in these collisions. Several model calculations show qualitative agreement with the measured J/ψJ/ψ RpAuR_{p\mathrm{Au}}, while their agreement with the J/ψJ/ψ yields in pp+pp and pp+Au collisions is worse.

Measurement of inclusive electrons from open heavy-flavor hadron decays in pp+pp collisions at s=200\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV with the STAR detector

We report a new measurement of the production cross section for inclusive electrons from open heavy-flavor hadron decays as a function of transverse momentum (pTp_{\rm T}) at mid-rapidity (∣y∣<|y|< 0.7) in pp+pp collisions at s=200\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV. The result is presented for 2.5 <pT<<p_{\rm T}< 10 GeV/cc with an improved precision above 6 GeV/cc with respect to the previous measurements, providing more constraints on perturbative QCD calculations. Moreover, this measurement also provides a high-precision reference for measurements of nuclear modification factors for inclusive electrons from open-charm and -bottom hadron decays in heavy-ion collisions.

Measurements of Λ3H{}^3_Λ\rm{H} and Λ4H{}^4_Λ\rm{H} Lifetimes and Yields in Au+Au Collisions in the High Baryon Density Region

We report precision measurements of hypernuclei Λ3H{}^3_Λ\rm{H} and Λ4H{}^4_Λ\rm{H} lifetimes obtained from Au+Au collisions at \snn = 3.0\,GeV and 7.2\,GeV collected by the STAR experiment at RHIC, and the first measurement of Λ3H{}^3_Λ\rm{H} and Λ4H{}^4_Λ\rm{H} mid-rapidity yields in Au+Au collisions at \snn = 3.0\,GeV. Λ3H{}^3_Λ\rm{H} and Λ4H{}^4_Λ\rm{H}, being the two simplest bound states composed of hyperons and nucleons, are cornerstones in the field of hypernuclear physics. Their lifetimes are measured to be 221±15(stat.)±19(syst.)221\pm15(\rm stat.)\pm19(\rm syst.)\,ps for Λ3H{}^3_Λ\rm{H} and 218±6(stat.)±13(syst.)218\pm6(\rm stat.)\pm13(\rm syst.)\,ps for Λ4H{}^4_Λ\rm{H}. The pTp_T-integrated yields of Λ3H{}^3_Λ\rm{H} and Λ4H{}^4_Λ\rm{H} are presented in different centrality and rapidity intervals. It is observed that the shape of the rapidity distribution of Λ4H{}^4_Λ\rm{H} is different for 0--10\% and 10--50\% centrality collisions. Thermal model calculations, using the canonical ensemble for strangeness, describes the Λ3H{}^3_Λ\rm{H} yield well, while underestimating the Λ4H{}^4_Λ\rm{H} yield. Transport models, combining baryonic mean-field and coalescence (JAM) or utilizing dynamical cluster formation via baryonic interactions (PHQMD) for light nuclei and hypernuclei production, approximately describe the measured Λ3H{}^3_Λ\rm{H} and Λ4H{}^4_Λ\rm{H} yields. Our measurements provide means to precisely assess our understanding of the fundamental baryonic interactions with strange quarks, which can impact our understanding of more complicated systems involving hyperons, such as the interior of neutron stars or exotic hypernuclei.

Measurements of Proton High Order Cumulants in 3 GeV Au+Au Collisions and Implications for the QCD Critical Point

We report cumulants of the proton multiplicity distribution from dedicated fixed-target Au+Au collisions at 3.0 GeV, measured by the STAR experiment in the kinematic acceptance of rapidity (yy) and transverse momentum (pTp_{\rm T}) within −0.5<y<0-0.5 < y<0 and 0.4<pT<2.00.4 < p_{\rm T} <2.0 GeV/cc. In the most central 0--5\% collisions, a proton cumulant ratio is measured to be C4/C2=−0.85±0.09 (stat.)±0.82 (syst.)C_4/C_2=-0.85 \pm 0.09 ~(\rm stat.) \pm 0.82 ~(\rm syst.), which is less than unity, the Poisson baseline. The hadronic transport UrQMD model reproduces our C4/C2C_4/C_2 in the measured acceptance. Compared to higher energy results and the transport model calculations, the suppression in C4/C2C_4/C_2 is consistent with fluctuations driven by baryon number conservation and indicates an energy regime dominated by hadronic interactions. These data imply that the QCD critical region, if created in heavy-ion collisions, could only exist at energies higher than 3\,GeV.

Probing Strangeness Canonical Ensemble with K−K^{-}, ϕ(1020)ϕ(1020) and Ξ−Ξ^{-} Production in Au+Au Collisions at sNN=3 GeV{\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = \rm{3\,GeV}}

We report the first multi-differential measurements of strange hadrons of K−K^{-}, ϕϕ and Ξ−Ξ^{-} yields as well as the ratios of ϕ/K−ϕ/K^- and ϕ/Ξ−ϕ/Ξ^- in Au+Au collisions at sNN=3 GeV{\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = \rm{3\,GeV}} with the STAR experiment fixed target configuration at RHIC. The ϕϕ mesons and Ξ−Ξ^{-} hyperons are measured through hadronic decay channels, ϕ→K+K−ϕ\rightarrow K^+K^- and Ξ−→Λπ−Ξ^-\rightarrow Λπ^-. Collision centrality and rapidity dependence of the transverse momentum spectra for these strange hadrons are presented. The 4π4π yields and ratios are compared to thermal model and hadronic transport model predictions. At this collision energy, thermal model with grand canonical ensemble (GCE) under-predicts the ϕ/K−ϕ/K^- and ϕ/Ξ−ϕ/Ξ^- ratios while the result of canonical ensemble (CE) calculations reproduce ϕ/K−ϕ/K^-, with the correlation length rc∼2.7r_c \sim 2.7\,fm, and ϕ/Ξ−ϕ/Ξ^-, rc∼4.2r_c \sim 4.2\,fm, for the 0-10\% central collisions. Hadronic transport models including high mass resonance decays could also describe the ratios. While thermal calculations with GCE work well for strangeness production in high energy collisions, the change to CE at 3 GeV\rm{3\,GeV} implies a rather different medium property at high baryon density.

Probing the gluonic structure of the deuteron with J/ψJ/ψ photoproduction in d+Au ultra-peripheral collisions

Understanding gluon density distributions and how they are modified in nuclei are among the most important goals in nuclear physics. In recent years, diffractive vector meson production measured in ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) at heavy-ion colliders has provided a new tool for probing the gluon density. In this Letter, we report the first measurement of J/ψJ/ψ photoproduction off the deuteron in UPCs at the center-of-mass energy sNN=200 GeV\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=200~\rm GeV in d++Au collisions. The differential cross section as a function of momentum transfer −t-t is measured. In addition, data with a neutron tagged in the deuteron-going Zero-Degree Calorimeter is investigated for the first time, which is found to be consistent with the expectation of incoherent diffractive scattering at low momentum transfer. Theoretical predictions based on the Color Glass Condensate saturation model and the gluon shadowing model are compared with the data quantitatively. A better agreement with the saturation model has been observed. With the current measurement, the results are found to be directly sensitive to the gluon density distribution of the deuteron and the deuteron breakup, which provides insights into the nuclear gluonic structure.

Two-particle correlations on transverse rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200 GeV at STAR

Two-particle correlation measurements projected onto two-dimensional, transverse rapidity coordinates (yT1,yT2y_{T1},y_{T2}), allow access to dynamical properties of the QCD medium produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions that angular correlation measurements are not sensitive to. We report non-identified charged-particle correlations for Au + Au minimum-bias collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV taken by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). Correlations are presented as 2D functions of transverse rapidity for like-sign, unlike-sign and all charged-particle pairs, as well as for particle pairs whose relative azimuthal angles lie on the near-side, the away-side, or at all relative azimuth. The correlations are constructed using charged particles with transverse momentum pT≥0.15p_T \geq 0.15 GeV/cc, pseudorapidity from −-1 to 1, and azimuthal angles from −π-π to ππ. The significant correlation structures that are observed evolve smoothly with collision centrality. The major correlation features include a saddle shape plus a broad peak with maximum near yT≈3y_T \approx 3, corresponding to pT≈p_T \approx 1.5 GeV/cc. The broad peak is observed in both like- and unlike-sign charge combinations and in near- and away-side relative azimuthal angles. The all-charge, all-azimuth correlation measurements are compared with the theoretical predictions of {\sc hijing} and {\sc epos}. The results indicate that the correlations for peripheral to mid-central collisions can be approximately described as a superposition of nucleon + nucleon collisions with minimal effects from the QCD medium. Strong medium effects are indicated in mid- to most-central collisions.

Measurement of Groomed Jet Substructure Observables in \pp Collisions at s=200\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV with STAR

In this letter, measurements of the shared momentum fraction (zgz_{\rm{g}}) and the groomed jet radius (RgR_{\rm{g}}), as defined in the SoftDrop algorihm, are reported in \pp collisions at s=200\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV collected by the STAR experiment. These substructure observables are differentially measured for jets of varying resolution parameters from R=0.2−0.6R = 0.2 - 0.6 in the transverse momentum range 15<pT,jet<6015 < p_{\rm{T, jet}} < 60 GeV/c/c. These studies show that, in the pT,jetp_{\rm{T, jet}} range accessible at s=200\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV and with increasing jet resolution parameter and jet transverse momentum, the zgz_{\rm{g}} distribution asymptotically converges to the DGLAP splitting kernel for a quark radiating a gluon. The groomed jet radius measurements reflect a momentum-dependent narrowing of the jet structure for jets of a given resolution parameter, i.e., the larger the pT,jetp_{\rm{T, jet}}, the narrower the first splitting. For the first time, these fully corrected measurements are compared to Monte Carlo generators with leading order QCD matrix elements and leading log in the parton shower, and to state-of-the-art theoretical calculations at next-to-leading-log accuracy. We observe that PYTHIA 6 with parameters tuned to reproduce RHIC measurements is able to quantitatively describe data, whereas PYTHIA 8 and HERWIG 7, tuned to reproduce LHC data, are unable to provide a simultaneous description of both zgz_{\rm{g}} and RgR_{\rm{g}}, resulting in opportunities for fine parameter tuning of these models for \pp collisions at RHIC energies. We also find that the theoretical calculations without non-perturbative corrections are able to qualitatively describe the trend in data for jets of large resolution parameters at high pT,jetp_{\rm{T, jet}}, but fail at small jet resolution parameters and low jet transverse momenta.

Measurement of inclusive charged-particle jet production in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV

The STAR Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider reports the first measurement of inclusive jet production in peripheral and central Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV. Jets are reconstructed with the anti-kT_{T} algorithm using charged tracks with pseudorapidity ∣η∣<1.0|η|<1.0 and transverse momentum 0.2<pT,jetch<300.2<p_{T,jet}^{ch}<30 GeV/cc, with jet resolution parameter RR=0.2, 0.3, and 0.4. The large background yield uncorrelated with the jet signal is observed to be dominated by statistical phase space, consistent with a previous coincidence measurement. This background is suppressed by requiring a high-transverse-momentum (high-pTp_T) leading hadron in accepted jet candidates. The bias imposed by this requirement is assessed, and the pTp_T region in which the bias is small is identified. Inclusive charged-particle jet distributions are reported in peripheral and central Au+Au collisions for 5<pT,jetch<255<p_{T,jet}^{ch}<25 GeV/cc and 5<pT,jetch<305<p_{T,jet}^{ch}<30 GeV/cc, respectively. The charged-particle jet inclusive yield is suppressed for central Au+Au collisions, compared to both the peripheral Au+Au yield from this measurement and to the pppp yield calculated using the PYTHIA event generator. The magnitude of the suppression is consistent with that of inclusive hadron production at high pTp_T, and that of semi-inclusive recoil jet yield when expressed in terms of energy loss due to medium-induced energy transport. Comparison of inclusive charged-particle jet yields for different values of RR exhibits no significant evidence for medium-induced broadening of the transverse jet profile for R<0.4R<0.4 in central Au+Au collisions. The measured distributions are consistent with theoretical model calculations that incorporate jet quenching.

Beam energy dependence of net-ΛΛ fluctuations measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC

The measurements of particle multiplicity distributions have generated considerable interest in understanding the fluctuations of conserved quantum numbers in the Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) hadronization regime, in particular near a possible critical point and near the chemical freeze-out. We report the measurement of efficiency and centrality bin width corrected cumulant ratios (C2/C1C_{2}/C_{1}, C3/C2C_{3}/C_{2}) of net-ΛΛ distributions, in the context of both strangeness and baryon number conservation, as a function of collision energy, centrality and rapidity. The results are for Au + Au collisions at five beam energies (sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV) recorded with the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR). We compare our results to the Poisson and negative binomial (NBD) expectations, as well as to Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) and Hadron Resonance Gas (HRG) model predictions. Both NBD and Poisson baselines agree with data within the statistical and systematic uncertainties. The ratios of the measured cumulants show no features of critical fluctuations. The chemical freeze-out temperatures extracted from a recent HRG calculation, which was successfully used to describe the net-proton, net-kaon and net-charge data, indicate ΛΛ freeze-out conditions similar to those of kaons. However, large deviations are found when comparing to temperatures obtained from net-proton fluctuations. The net-ΛΛ cumulants show a weak, but finite, dependence on the rapidity coverage in the acceptance of the detector, which can be attributed to quantum number conservation.

First measurement of ΛcΛ_c baryon production in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV

We report on the first measurement of the charmed baryon Λc±Λ_c^{\pm} production at midrapidity (∣y∣|y| << 1) in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV collected by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The ΛcΛ_c/D0D^0 (denoting (Λc++Λc−Λ_c^++Λ_c^-)/(D0+D0ˉD^0+\bar{D^0})) yield ratio is measured to be 1.08 ±\pm 0.16 (stat.) ±\pm 0.26 (sys.) in the 0--20% most central Au+Au collisions for the transverse momentum (pTp_T) range 3 << pTp_T << 6 GeV/cc. This is significantly larger than the PYTHIA model calculations for p+pp+p collisions. The measured ΛcΛ_c/D0D^0 ratio, as a function of pTp_T and collision centrality, is comparable to the baryon-to-meson ratios for light and strange hadrons in Au+Au collisions. Model calculations including coalescence hadronization for charmed baryon and meson formation reproduce the features of our measured ΛcΛ_c/D0D^0 ratio.

Improved Constraints on Sterile Neutrino Mixing from Disappearance Searches in the MINOS, MINOS+, Daya Bay, and Bugey-3 Experiments

Searches for electron antineutrino, muon neutrino, and muon antineutrino disappearance driven by sterile neutrino mixing have been carried out by the Daya Bay and MINOS+ collaborations. This Letter presents the combined results of these searches, along with exclusion results from the Bugey-3 reactor experiment, framed in a minimally extended four-neutrino scenario. Significantly improved constraints on the θμeθ_{μe} mixing angle are derived that constitute the most stringent limits to date over five orders of magnitude in the sterile mass-squared splitting Δm412Δm^2_{41}, excluding the 90% C.L. sterile-neutrino parameter space allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE observations at 90% CLs_s for Δm412<5 Δm^2_{41}<5\,eV2^2.Furthermore, the LSND and MiniBooNE 99% C.L. allowed regions are excluded at 99% CLs_s for Δm412Δm^2_{41} << 1.2 eV2^2.

Intergalactic medium dispersion measures of fast radio bursts estimated from IllustrisTNG simulation and their cosmological applications

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond-duration radio transients and can be used as a cosmological probe. However, the dispersion measure (DM) contributed by intergalactic medium (IGM) is hard to be distinguished from other components. In this paper, we use the IllustrisTNG simulation to realistically estimate the DMIGMDM_{\rm IGM} up to z∼9z\sim 9. We find DMIGM=892−270+721DM_{\rm IGM} = 892^{+721}_{-270} pc cm−3^{-3} at z=1z=1. The probability distribution of DMIGMDM_{\rm IGM} can be well fitted by a quasi-Gaussian function with a long tail. The tail is caused by the structures along the line of sight in IGM. Subtracting DM contributions from the Milky Way and host galaxy for localized FRBs, the DMIGMDM_{\rm IGM} value is close to the derived DMIGM−zDM_{\rm IGM}-z relation. We also show the capability to constrain the cosmic reionization history with the DMIGMDM_{\rm IGM} of high-redshift FRBs in the IllustrisTNG universe. The derived DMIGM−zDM_{\rm IGM}-z relation at high redshifts can be well fitted by a tanhtanh reionization model with the reionization redshift z=5.95z=5.95, which is compatible with the reionization model used by the IllustrisTNG simulation. The DMIGMDM_{\rm IGM} of high-redshift FRBs also provides an independent way to measure the optical depth of cosmic microwave background (CMB). Our result can be used to derive the pseudo-redshifts of non-localized FRBs for DMIGM<4000DM_{\rm IGM}<4000 \ \ pc cm−3^{-3}.

Measurement of D0^0-meson + hadron two-dimensional angular correlations in Au+Au collisions at sNN=\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV

Open heavy flavor hadrons provide unique probes of the medium produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Due to their increased mass relative to light-flavor hadrons, long lifetime, and early production in hard-scattering interactions, they provide access to the full evolution of the partonic medium formed in heavy-ion collisions. This paper reports two-dimensional (2D) angular correlations between neutral DD-mesons and unidentified charged particles produced in minimum-bias Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV. D0D^0 and Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 mesons are reconstructed via their weak decay to K∓π±K^{\mp} π^{\pm} using the Heavy Flavor Tracker (HFT) in the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) experiment. Correlations on relative pseudorapidity and azimuth (Δη,Δϕ)(Δη,Δϕ) are presented for peripheral, mid-central and central collisions with D0D^0 transverse momentum from 2 to 10 GeV/cc. Attention is focused on the 2D peaked correlation structure near the triggered D0D^0-meson, the {\em near-side} (NS) peak, which serves as a proxy for a charm-quark containing jet. The correlated NS yield of charged particles per D0D^0-meson and the 2D widths of the NS peak increase significantly from peripheral to central collisions. These results are compared with similar correlations using unidentified charged particles, consisting primarily of light-flavor hadrons, at similar trigger particle momenta. Similar per-trigger yields and widths of the NS correlation peak are observed. The present results provide additional evidence that D0D^0-mesons undergo significant interactions with the medium formed in heavy-ion collision and show, for the first time, significant centrality evolution of the NS 2D peak in the correlations of particles associated with a heavy-flavor hadron produced in these collisions.

Measurement of the central exclusive production of charged particle pairs in proton-proton collisions at s=200\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV with the STAR detector at RHIC

We report on the measurement of the Central Exclusive Production of charged particle pairs h+h−h^{+}h^{-} (h=π,K,ph = π, K, p) with the STAR detector at RHIC in proton-proton collisions at s=200\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV. The charged particle pairs produced in the reaction pp→p′+h+h−+p′pp\to p^\prime+h^{+}h^{-}+p^\prime are reconstructed from the tracks in the central detector, while the forward-scattered protons are measured in the Roman Pot system. Differential cross sections are measured in the fiducial region, which roughly corresponds to the square of the four-momentum transfers at the proton vertices in the range $0.04~\mbox{GeV}^2 < -t_1 , -t_2 < 0.2~\mbox{GeV}^2$, invariant masses of the charged particle pairs up to a few GeV and pseudorapidities of the centrally-produced hadrons in the range ∣η∣<0.7|η|<0.7. The measured cross sections are compared to phenomenological predictions based on the Double Pomeron Exchange (DPE) model. Structures observed in the mass spectra of π+π−π^{+}π^{-} and K+K−K^{+}K^{-} pairs are consistent with the DPE model, while angular distributions of pions suggest a dominant spin-0 contribution to π+π−π^{+}π^{-} production. The fiducial π+π−π^+π^- cross section is extrapolated to the Lorentz-invariant region, which allows decomposition of the invariant mass spectrum into continuum and resonant contributions. The extrapolated cross section is well described by the continuum production and at least three resonances, the f0(980)f_0(980), f2(1270)f_2(1270) and f0(1500)f_0(1500), with a possible small contribution from the f0(1370)f_0(1370). Fits to the extrapolated differential cross section as a function of t1t_1 and t2t_2 enable extraction of the exponential slope parameters in several bins of the invariant mass of π+π−π^+π^- pairs. These parameters are sensitive to the size of the interaction region.

Measurements of WW and Z/γ∗Z/γ^* cross sections and their ratios in p+pp+p collisions at RHIC

We report on the WW and Z/γ∗Z/γ^* differential and total cross sections as well as the W+W^+/W−W^- and (W++W−)(W^+ + W^-)/(Z/γ∗)(Z/γ^*) cross-section ratios measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC in p+pp+p collisions at s=500\sqrt{s} = 500 GeV and 510510 GeV. The cross sections and their ratios are sensitive to quark and antiquark parton distribution functions. In particular, at leading order, the WW cross-section ratio is sensitive to the dˉ/uˉ\bar{d}/\bar{u} ratio. These measurements were taken at high Q2∼MW2,MZ2Q^2 \sim M_W^2,M_Z^2 and can serve as input into global analyses to provide constraints on the sea quark distributions. The results presented here combine three STAR data sets from 2011, 2012, and 2013, accumulating an integrated luminosity of 350 pb−1^{-1}. We also assess the expected impact that our W+/W−W^+/W^- cross-section ratios will have on various quark distributions, and find sensitivity to the uˉ−dˉ\bar{u}-\bar{d} and dˉ/uˉ\bar{d}/\bar{u} distributions.

Optimization of the JUNO liquid scintillator composition using a Daya Bay antineutrino detector

To maximize the light yield of the liquid scintillator (LS) for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 t LS sample was produced in a pilot plant at Daya Bay. The optical properties of the new LS in various compositions were studied by replacing the gadolinium-loaded LS in one antineutrino detector. The concentrations of the fluor, PPO, and the wavelength shifter, bis-MSB, were increased in 12 steps from 0.5 g/L and <0.01 mg/L to 4 g/L and 13 mg/L, respectively. The numbers of total detected photoelectrons suggest that, with the optically purified solvent, the bis-MSB concentration does not need to be more than 4 mg/L. To bridge the one order of magnitude in the detector size difference between Daya Bay and JUNO, the Daya Bay data were used to tune the parameters of a newly developed optical model. Then, the model and tuned parameters were used in the JUNO simulation. This enabled to determine the optimal composition for the JUNO LS: purified solvent LAB with 2.5 g/L PPO, and 1 to 4 mg/L bis-MSB.

Superflares on solar-type stars from the first year observation of TESS

Superflares, as strong explosions on stars, have been well studied with the progress of space time-domain astronomy. In this work, we present the study of superflares on solar-type stars using Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite ({\em{TESS}}) data. 13 sectors of observations during the first year of the {\em TESS} mission have covered the southern hemisphere of the sky, containing 25,734 solar-type stars. We verified 1,216 superflares on 400 solar-type stars through automatic search and visual inspection with 2-minute cadence data. Our result suggests a higher superflare frequency distribution than the result from {\em Kepler}. The reason may be that the majority of {\em TESS} solar-type stars in our dataset are rapidly rotating stars. The power-law index γγ of the superflare frequency distribution (dN/dE∝E−γdN/dE\propto E^{-γ}) is constrained to be γ=2.16±0.10γ= 2.16\pm 0.10, which is a little larger than that of solar flares but consistent with the results from {\em Kepler}. Because only 7 superflares of Sun-like stars are detected, we may not give a robust superflare occurrence frequency. And four stars are accompanied by unconfirmed hot planet candidates. Therefore, superflares are possibly caused by stellar magnetic activities instead of planet-star interactions. We also find an extraordinary star TIC43472154, which exhibits about 200 superflares per year. In addition, the correlation between energy and duration of superflares (Tduration ∝EβT_{\text {duration }} \propto E^β) is analyzed. We derive the power-law index to be β=0.42±0.01β=0.42\pm0.01, which is a little larger than β=1/3β=1/3 from the prediction according to magnetic reconnection theory.

Beam-energy dependence of identified two-particle angular correlations in Au+Au collisions at RHIC

The two-particle angular correlation functions, R2R_2, of pions, kaons, and protons in Au+Au collisions at sNN=\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4, and 200 GeV were measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. These correlations were measured for both like-sign and unlike-sign charge combinations and versus the centrality. The correlations of pions and kaons show the expected near-side ({\it i.e.}, at small relative angles) peak resulting from short-range mechanisms. The amplitudes of these short-range correlations decrease with increasing beam energy. However, the proton correlation functions exhibit strong anticorrelations in the near-side region. This behavior is observed for the first time in an A+A collision system. The observed anticorrelation is pTp_{T}-independent and decreases with increasing beam energy and centrality. The experimental results are also compared to the Monte Carlo models UrQMD, Hijing, and AMPT.

Underlying event measurements in pp+pp collisions at s=200\sqrt{s}= 200 GeV at RHIC

Particle production sensitive to non-factorizable and non-perturbative processes that contribute to the underlying event associated with a high transverse momentum (pTp_{T}) jet in proton+proton collisions at s\sqrt{s}=200 GeV is studied with the STAR detector. Each event is divided into three regions based on the azimuthal angle with respect to the highest-pTp_{T} jet direction: in the leading jet direction ("Toward"), opposite to the leading jet ("Away"), and perpendicular to the leading jet ("Transverse"). In the Transverse region, the average charged particle density is found to be between 0.4 and 0.6 and the mean transverse momentum, ⟨pT⟩\langle p_{T}\rangle, between 0.5-0.7 GeV/cc for particles with pTp_{T}>>0.2 GeV/cc at mid-pseudorapidity (∣η∣|η|<<1) and jet pTp_{T}>>15 GeV/cc. Both average particle density and ⟨pT⟩\langle p_{T}\rangle depend weakly on the leading jet pTp_{T}. Closer inspection of the Transverse region hints that contributions to the underlying event from initial- and final-state radiation are significantly smaller in these collisions than at the higher energies, up to 13 TeV, recorded at the LHC. Underlying event measurements associated with a high-pTp_{T} jet will contribute to our understanding of QCD processes at hard and soft scales at RHIC energies, as well as provide constraints to modeling of underlying event dynamics.

Improved Search for a Light Sterile Neutrino with the Full Configuration of the Daya Bay Experiment

This Letter reports an improved search for light sterile neutrino mixing in the electron antineutrino disappearance channel with the full configuration of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. With an additional 404 days of data collected in eight antineutrino detectors, this search benefits from 3.6 times the statistics available to the previous publication, as well as from improvements in energy calibration and background reduction. A relative comparison of the rate and energy spectrum of reactor antineutrinos in the three experimental halls yields no evidence of sterile neutrino mixing in the 2×10−4≲∣Δm412∣≲0.32\times10^{-4} \lesssim |Δm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.3 eV2^{2} mass range. The resulting limits on sin⁡22θ14\sin^{2}2θ_{14} are improved by approximately a factor of 2 over previous results and constitute the most stringent constraints to date in the ∣Δm412∣≲0.2|Δm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.2 eV2^{2} region.

Limits on Active to Sterile Neutrino Oscillations from Disappearance Searches in the MINOS, Daya Bay, and Bugey-3 Experiments

Searches for a light sterile neutrino have been performed independently by the MINOS and the Daya Bay experiments using the muon (anti)neutrino and electron antineutrino disappearance channels, respectively. In this Letter, results from both experiments are combined with those from the Bugey-3 reactor neutrino experiment to constrain oscillations into light sterile neutrinos. The three experiments are sensitive to complementary regions of parameter space, enabling the combined analysis to probe regions allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments in a minimally extended four-neutrino flavor framework. Stringent limits on sin⁡22θμe\sin^2 2θ_{μe} are set over 6 orders of magnitude in the sterile mass-squared splitting Δm412Δm^2_{41}. The sterile-neutrino mixing phase space allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments is excluded for Δm412<0.8Δm^2_{41} < 0.8 eV2^2 at 95% CLs_s.

New measurement of θ13θ_{13} via neutron capture on hydrogen at Daya Bay

This article reports an improved independent measurement of neutrino mixing angle θ13θ_{13} at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. Electron antineutrinos were identified by inverse ββ-decays with the emitted neutron captured by hydrogen, yielding a data-set with principally distinct uncertainties from that with neutrons captured by gadolinium. With the final two of eight antineutrino detectors installed, this study used 621 days of data including the previously reported 217-day data set with six detectors. The dominant statistical uncertainty was reduced by 49%. Intensive studies of the cosmogenic muon-induced 9^9Li and fast neutron backgrounds and the neutron-capture energy selection efficiency, resulted in a reduction of the systematic uncertainty by 26%. The deficit in the detected number of antineutrinos at the far detectors relative to the expected number based on the near detectors yielded sin⁡22θ13=0.071±0.011\sin^22θ_{13} = 0.071 \pm 0.011 in the three-neutrino-oscillation framework. The combination of this result with the gadolinium-capture result is also reported.

Study of the wave packet treatment of neutrino oscillation at Daya Bay

The disappearance of reactor νˉe\barν_e observed by the Daya Bay experiment is examined in the framework of a model in which the neutrino is described by a wave packet with a relative intrinsic momentum dispersion σrelσ_\text{rel}. Three pairs of nuclear reactors and eight antineutrino detectors, each with good energy resolution, distributed among three experimental halls, supply a high-statistics sample of νˉe\barν_e acquired at nine different baselines. This provides a unique platform to test the effects which arise from the wave packet treatment of neutrino oscillation. The modified survival probability formula was used to fit Daya Bay data, providing the first experimental limits: 2.38⋅10−17<σrel<0.232.38 \cdot 10^{-17} < σ_{\rm rel} < 0.23. Treating the dimensions of the reactor cores and detectors as constraints, the limits are improved: 10−14≲σrel<0.2310^{-14} \lesssim σ_{\rm rel} < 0.23, and an upper limit of σrel<0.20σ_{\rm rel} <0.20 is obtained. All limits correspond to a 95\% C.L. Furthermore, the effect due to the wave packet nature of neutrino oscillation is found to be insignificant for reactor antineutrinos detected by the Daya Bay experiment thus ensuring an unbiased measurement of the oscillation parameters sin⁡22θ13\sin^22θ_{13} and Δm322Δm^2_{32} within the plane wave model.

The Detector System of The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment

The Daya Bay experiment was the first to report simultaneous measurements of reactor antineutrinos at multiple baselines leading to the discovery of νˉe\barν_e oscillations over km-baselines. Subsequent data has provided the world's most precise measurement of sin22θ13\rm{sin}^22θ_{13} and the effective mass splitting Δmee2Δm_{ee}^2. The experiment is located in Daya Bay, China where the cluster of six nuclear reactors is among the world's most prolific sources of electron antineutrinos. Multiple antineutrino detectors are deployed in three underground water pools at different distances from the reactor cores to search for deviations in the antineutrino rate and energy spectrum due to neutrino mixing. Instrumented with photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), the water pools serve as shielding against natural radioactivity from the surrounding rock and provide efficient muon tagging. Arrays of resistive plate chambers over the top of each pool provide additional muon detection. The antineutrino detectors were specifically designed for measurements of the antineutrino flux with minimal systematic uncertainty. Relative detector efficiencies between the near and far detectors are known to better than 0.2%. With the unblinding of the final two detectors' baselines and target masses, a complete description and comparison of the eight antineutrino detectors can now be presented. This paper describes the Daya Bay detector systems, consisting of eight antineutrino detectors in three instrumented water pools in three underground halls, and their operation through the first year of eight detector data-taking.

A new measurement of antineutrino oscillation with the full detector configuration at Daya Bay

We report a new measurement of electron antineutrino disappearance using the fully-constructed Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. The final two of eight antineutrino detectors were installed in the summer of 2012. Including the 404 days of data collected from October 2012 to November 2013 resulted in a total exposure of 6.9×\times105^5 GWth_{\rm th}-ton-days, a 3.6 times increase over our previous results. Improvements in energy calibration limited variations between detectors to 0.2%. Removal of six 241^{241}Am-13^{13}C radioactive calibration sources reduced the background by a factor of two for the detectors in the experimental hall furthest from the reactors. Direct prediction of the antineutrino signal in the far detectors based on the measurements in the near detectors explicitly minimized the dependence of the measurement on models of reactor antineutrino emission. The uncertainties in our estimates of sin⁡22θ13\sin^{2}2θ_{13} and ∣Δmee2∣|Δm^2_{ee}| were halved as a result of these improvements. Analysis of the relative antineutrino rates and energy spectra between detectors gave sin⁡22θ13=0.084±0.005\sin^{2}2θ_{13} = 0.084\pm0.005 and ∣Δmee2∣=(2.42±0.11)×10−3|Δm^{2}_{ee}|= (2.42\pm0.11) \times 10^{-3} eV2^2 in the three-neutrino framework.

Measurement of the Reactor Antineutrino Flux and Spectrum at Daya Bay

This Letter reports a measurement of the flux and energy spectrum of electron antineutrinos from six 2.9~GWth_{th} nuclear reactors with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512~m and 561~m) and one far (1,579~m) underground experimental halls in the Daya Bay experiment. Using 217 days of data, 296,721 and 41,589 inverse beta decay (IBD) candidates were detected in the near and far halls, respectively. The measured IBD yield is (1.55 ±\pm 0.04) ×\times 10−18^{-18}~cm2^2/GW/day or (5.92 ±\pm 0.14) ×\times 10−43^{-43}~cm2^2/fission. This flux measurement is consistent with previous short-baseline reactor antineutrino experiments and is 0.946±0.0220.946\pm0.022 (0.991±0.0230.991\pm0.023) relative to the flux predicted with the Huber+Mueller (ILL+Vogel) fissile antineutrino model. The measured IBD positron energy spectrum deviates from both spectral predictions by more than 2σσ over the full energy range with a local significance of up to ∼\sim4σσ between 4-6 MeV. A reactor antineutrino spectrum of IBD reactions is extracted from the measured positron energy spectrum for model-independent predictions.

Independent Measurement of Theta13 via Neutron Capture on Hydrogen at Daya Bay

A new measurement of the θ13θ_{13} mixing angle has been obtained at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment via the detection of inverse beta decays tagged by neutron capture on hydrogen. The antineutrino events for hydrogen capture are distinct from those for gadolinium capture with largely different systematic uncertainties, allowing a determination independent of the gadolinium-capture result and an improvement on the precision of θ13θ_{13} measurement. With a 217-day antineutrino data set obtained with six antineutrino detectors and from six 2.9 GWth_{th} reactors, the rate deficit observed at the far hall is interpreted as sin⁡22θ13=0.083±0.018\sin^22θ_{13}=0.083\pm0.018 in the three-flavor oscillation model. When combined with the gadolinium-capture result from Daya Bay, we obtain sin⁡22θ13=0.089±0.008\sin^22θ_{13}=0.089\pm0.008 as the final result for the six-antineutrino-detector configuration of the Daya Bay experiment.

A search for light sterile neutrino mixing was performed with the first 217 days of data from the Daya Bay Reactor Antineutrino Experiment. Using 217 days of data, 41589 (203809 and 92912) antineutrino candidates were detected in the far hall (near halls). An improved measurement of the oscillation amplitude sin⁡22θ13=0.090−0.009+0.008\sin^{2}2θ_{13} = 0.090^{+0.008}_{-0.009} and the first direct measurement of the ν‾e\overlineν_{e} mass-squared difference ∣Δmee2∣=(2.59−0.20+0.19)×10−3 eV2|Δm^{2}_{ee}|= (2.59_{-0.20}^{+0.19}) \times 10^{-3}\ {\rm eV}^2 is obtained using the observed ν‾e\overlineν_{e} rates and energy spectra in a three-neutrino framework. Assembly and Installation of the Daya Bay Antineutrino Detectors

The Daya Bay reactor antineutrino experiment is designed to make a precision measurement of the neutrino mixing angle theta13, and recently made the definitive discovery of its nonzero value. It utilizes a set of eight, functionally identical antineutrino detectors to measure the reactor flux and spectrum at baselines of 300 - 2000m from the Daya Bay and Ling Ao Nuclear Power Plants. The Daya Bay antineutrino detectors were built in an above-ground facility and deployed side-by-side at three underground experimental sites near and far from the nuclear reactors. This configuration allows the experiment to make a precision measurement of reactor antineutrino disappearance over km-long baselines and reduces relative systematic uncertainties between detectors and nuclear reactors. A side-by-side comparison of Daya Bay antineutrino detectors

The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is designed to determine precisely the neutrino mixing angle θ13θ_{13} with a sensitivity better than 0.01 in the parameter sin22θ13^22θ_{13} at the 90% confidence level. To achieve this goal, the collaboration will build eight functionally identical antineutrino detectors. The first two detectors have been constructed, installed and commissioned in Experimental Hall 1, with steady data-taking beginning September 23, 2011. A comparison of the data collected over the subsequent three months indicates that the detectors are functionally identical, and that detector-related systematic uncertainties exceed requirements.

Improved Measurement of Electron Antineutrino Disappearance at Daya Bay

We report an improved measurement of the neutrino mixing angle θ13θ_{13} from the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. We exclude a zero value for sin⁡22θ13\sin^22θ_{13} with a significance of 7.7 standard deviations. Electron antineutrinos from six reactors of 2.9 GWth_{\rm th} were detected in six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (flux-weighted baselines of 470 m and 576 m) and one far (1648 m) underground experimental halls. Using 139 days of data, 28909 (205308) electron antineutrino candidates were detected at the far hall (near halls). The ratio of the observed to the expected number of antineutrinos assuming no oscillations at the far hall is 0.944±0.007(stat.)±0.003(syst.)0.944\pm 0.007({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.003({\rm syst.}). An analysis of the relative rates in six detectors finds sin⁡22θ13=0.089±0.010(stat.)±0.005(syst.)\sin^22θ_{13}=0.089\pm 0.010({\rm stat.})\pm0.005({\rm syst.}) in a three-neutrino framework.

Observation of electron-antineutrino disappearance at Daya Bay

The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment has measured a non-zero value for the neutrino mixing angle θ13θ_{13} with a significance of 5.2 standard deviations. Antineutrinos from six 2.9 GWth_{\rm th} reactors were detected in six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (flux-weighted baseline 470 m and 576 m) and one far (1648 m) underground experimental halls. With a 43,000 ton-GW_{\rm th}-day livetime exposure in 55 days, 10416 (80376) electron antineutrino candidates were detected at the far hall (near halls). The ratio of the observed to expected number of antineutrinos at the far hall is R=0.940±0.011(stat)±0.004(syst)R=0.940\pm 0.011({\rm stat}) \pm 0.004({\rm syst}). A rate-only analysis finds sin⁡22θ13=0.092±0.016(stat)±0.005(syst)\sin^22θ_{13}=0.092\pm 0.016({\rm stat})\pm0.005({\rm syst}) in a three-neutrino framework.
