Electron-Phonon Interaction in Ternary Rare-Earth Copper Antimonides LaCuSb2 and La(Cu0.8Ag0.2)Sb2 probed by Yanson Point-Contact Spectroscopy

Investigation of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in LaCuSb2 and La(Cu0.8Ag0.2)Sb2 compounds by Yanson point-contact spectroscopy (PCS) has been carried out. Point-contact spectra display a pronounced broad maximum in the range of 10÷20 mV caused by EPI. Variation of the position of this maximum is likely connected with anisotropic phonon spectrum in these layered compounds. The absence of phonon features after the main maximum allows the assessment of the Debye energy of about 40 meV. The EPI constant for the LaCuSb2 compound was estimated to be λ=0.2+/-0.03. A zero-bias minimum in differential resistance for the latter compound is observed for some point contacts, which vanishes at about 6 K, pointing to the formation of superconducting phase under point contact, while superconducting critical temperature of the bulk sample is only 1K.

Fermi-surface topological phase transition and horizontal order-parameter nodes in CaFe$_2$As$_2$ under pressure

Iron-based compounds (IBS) display a surprising variety of superconducting properties that seems to arise from the strong sensitivity of these systems to tiny details of the lattice structure. In this respect, systems that become superconducting under pressure, like CaFe$_2$As$_2$, are of particular interest. Here we report on the first directional point-contact Andreev-reflection spectroscopy (PCARS) measurements on CaFe$_2$As$_2$ crystals under quasi-hydrostatic pressure, and on the interpretation of the results using a 3D model for Andreev reflection combined with ab-initio calculations of the Fermi surface (within the density functional theory) and of the order parameter symmetry (within a random-phase-approximation approach in a ten-orbital model). The almost perfect agreement between PCARS results at different pressures and theoretical predictions highlights the intimate connection between the changes in the lattice structure, a topological transition in the hole-like Fermi surface sheet, and the emergence on the same sheet of an order parameter with a horizontal node line.

Probing the pairing symmetry in the over-doped Fe-based superconductor Ba_0.35Rb_0.65Fe_2As_2 as a function of hydrostatic pressure

We report muon spin rotation experiments on the magnetic penetration depth lambda and the temperature dependence of lambda^{-2} in the over-doped Fe-based high-temperature superconductor (Fe-HTS) Ba_{1-x}Rb_ xFe_2As_2 (x = 0.65) studied at ambient and under hydrostatic pressures up to p = 2.3 GPa. We find that in this system lambda^{-2}(T) is best described by d-wave scenario. This is in contrast to the case of the optimally doped x = 0.35 system which is known to be a nodeless s^{+-}-wave superconductor. This suggests that the doping induces the change of the pairing symmetry from s^{+-} to d-wave in Ba_{1-x}Rb_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2}. In addition, we find that the d-wave order parameter is robust against pressure, suggesting that d is the common and dominant pairing symmetry in over-doped Ba_{1-x}Rb_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2}. Application of pressure of p = 2.3 GPa causes a decrease of lambda(0) by less than 5 %, while at optimal doping x = 0.35 a significant decrease of lambda(0) was reported. The superconducting transition temperature T_c as well as the gap to T_c ratio 2Delta/k_BT_c show only a modest decrease with pressure. By combining the present data with those previously obtained for optimally doped system x = 0.35 and for the end member x = 1 we conclude that the SC gap symmetry as well as the pressure effects on the SC quantities strongly depend on the Rb doping level. These results are discussed in the light of the putative Lifshitz transition, i.e., a disappearance of the electron pockets in the Fermi surface of Ba_{1-x}Rb_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2} upon hole doping.

Raman scattering study of spin-density-wave-induced anisotropic electronic properties in AFe2As2 (A=Ca,Eu)

We present a polarization-resolved and temperature-dependent Raman scattering study of AFe2As2 (A = Ca, Eu). In the spin-density-wave (SDW) phase, spectral weight redistribution is observed in the fully symmetric and non-symmetric scattering channels at different energies. An anisotropic Raman response is observed in the fully symmetric channel in spontaneously detwinned CaFe2As2 samples. We calculate the orbital-resolved electronic structures using a combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT). We identify the electronic transitions corresponding to these two spectral features and find that the anisotropic Raman response originates from the lifted degeneracy of the dxz/yz orbitals in the broken symmetry phase.

Superconductivity emerging from an electronic phase separation in the charge ordered phase of RbFe$_2$As$_2$

$^{75}$As, $^{87}$Rb and $^{85}$Rb nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and $^{87}$Rb nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in RbFe$_2$As$_2$ iron-based superconductor are presented. We observe a marked broadening of $^{75}$As NQR spectrum below $T_0\simeq 140$ K which is associated with the onset of a charge order in the FeAs planes. Below $T_0$ we observe a power-law decrease in $^{75}$As nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate down to $T^*\simeq 20$ K. Below that temperature the nuclei start to probe different dynamics owing to the different local electronic configurations induced by the charge order. A fraction of the nuclei probes spin dynamics associated with electrons approaching a localization while another fraction probes activated dynamics possibly associated with a pseudogap. These different trends are discussed in the light of an orbital selective behaviour expected for the electronic correlations.

Electric field gradient wave (EFGW) in iron-based superconductor Ba(0.6)K(0.4)Fe2As2 studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy

The optimally doped 122 iron-based superconductor Ba(0.6)K(0.4)Fe2As2 has been studied by 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy versus temperature ranging from 4.2 K till 300 K with particular attention paid to the superconducting transition around 38 K. The spectra do not contain magnetic components and they exhibit quasi-continuous distribution of quadrupole split doublets. A distribution follows the electric field gradient (EFG) spatial modulation (wave) - EFGW. The EFGW is accompanied by some charge density wave (CDW) having about an order of magnitude lesser influence on the spectrum. The EFGW could be modeled as widely separated narrow sheets with the EFG increasing from small till maximum value almost linearly and subsequently dropping back to the original value in a similar fashion - across the sheet. One encounters very small and almost constant EFG between sheets. The EFGW shape and amplitude as well as the amplitude of CDW are strongly affected by a superconducting transition. All modulations are damped significantly at transition (38 K) and recover at a temperature being about 14 K lower. The maximum quadrupole splitting at 4.2 K amounts to about 2.1 mm/s, while the dispersion of CDW seen on the iron nuclei could be estimated far away from the superconducting gap opening and at low temperature as 0.5 el./a.u.^3. It drops to about 0.3 el./a.u.^3 just below transition to the superconducting state.

Magnetic anisotropy and lattice dynamics in FeAs studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy

Iron mono-arsenide in the powder form has been investigated by transmission 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy in the temperature range 4.2 - 1000 K. Additional spectra have been obtained at 20 K and 100 K applying external magnetic field of 7 T. It was found that the spin spiral propagating along the c-axis leads to the complex variation of the hyperfine magnetic field amplitude with the spin orientation varying in the a-b plane. The magnitude of the hyperfine field pointing in the direction of the local magnetic moment depends on the orientation of this moment in the a-b plane. Patterns are vastly different for iron located in the [0 k 0] positions and for iron in the [0 k+1/2 0] positions within the orthorhombic cell set to the Pnma symmetry. Lattice softens upon transition to the paramagnetic state at 69.2 K primarily in the a-c plane as seen by iron atoms. This effect is quite large considering lack of the structural transition. Two previously mentioned iron sites are discernible in the paramagnetic region till 300 K by different electron densities on the iron nuclei. The anisotropy of the iron vibrations developed at the transition to the paramagnetic state increases with the temperature in accordance with the harmonic approximation, albeit tends to saturation at high temperatures indicating gradual onset of the quasi-harmonic conditions. It seems that neither hyperfine fields nor magnetic moments are correct order parameters in light of the determined static critical exponents. Sample starts to loose arsenic at about 1000 K and under vacuum.

Magnetic structure of superconducting Eu(Fe0.82Co0.18)2As2 as revealed by single-crystal neutron diffraction

The magnetic structure of superconducting Eu(Fe0.82Co0.18)2As2 is unambiguously determined by single-crystal neutron diffraction. A long-range ferromagnetic order of the Eu2+ moments along the c-direction is revealed below the magnetic phase transition temperature Tc = 17 K. In addition, the antiferromagnetism of the Fe2+ moments still survives and the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition is also observed, although the transition temperatures of the Fe-spin density wave (SDW) order and the structural phase transition are significantly suppressed to Tn = 70 K and Ts = 90 K, respectively, compared to the parent compound EuFe2As2.We present the microscopic evidences for the coexistence of the Eu-ferromagnetism (FM) and the Fe-SDW in the superconducting crystal. The superconductivity (SC) competes with the Fe-SDW in Eu(Fe0.82Co0.18)2As2.Moreover, the comparison between Eu(Fe1-xCox)2As2 and Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 indicates a considerable influence of the rare-earth element Eu on the magnetism of the Fe sublattice.

Mössbauer studies of the peculiar magnetism in parent compounds of the iron-based superconductors

A review of the magnetism in the parent compounds of the iron-based superconductors is given based on the transmission Moessbauer spectroscopy of 57Fe and 151Eu. It was found that the 3d magnetism is of the itinerant character with varying admixture of the spin-polarized covalent bonds. For the 122 compounds a longitudinal spin density wave (SDW) develops. In the case of the EuFe2As2 a divalent europium orders antiferromagnetically at much lower temperature as compared to the onset of SDW. These two magnetic systems remain almost uncoupled one to another. For the non-stoichiometric Fe(1+x)Te parent of the 11 family one has a transversal SDW and magnetic order of the interstitial iron with relatively high and localized magnetic moments. These two systems are strongly coupled one to another. For the grand parent of the iron-based superconductors FeAs one observes two mutually orthogonal phase-related transversal SDW on the iron sites. There are two sets of such spin arrangements due to two crystallographic iron sites. The FeAs exhibits the highest covalency among compounds studied, but it has still a metallic character.

Muon-spin rotation and magnetization studies of chemical and hydrostatic pressure effects in EuFe_{2}(As_{1-x}P_{x})_{2}

The magnetic phase diagram of EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ was investigated by means of magnetization and muon-spin rotation studies as a function of chemical (isovalent substitution of As by P) and hydrostatic pressure. The magnetic phase diagrams of the magnetic ordering of the Eu and Fe spins with respect to P content and hydrostatic pressure are determined and discussed. The present investigations reveal that the magnetic coupling between the Eu and the Fe sublattices strongly depends on chemical and hydrostatic pressure. It is found that chemical and hydrostatic pressure have a similar effect on the Eu and Fe magnetic order.

Point-contact spectroscopy in Co-doped CaFe2As2: nodal superconductivity and topological Fermi surface transition

We performed point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy measurements in Ca(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)2As2 single crystals with effective x=0.060 +- 0.005. The spectra of ab-plane contacts show a zero-bias maximum and broad shoulders at about 5-6 meV. Their fit with the three-dimensional Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model (making use of a analytical expression for the Fermi surface that mimics the one calculated from first principles) shows that this compound presents a large isotropic gap on the quasi-2D electronlike Fermi surface sheets and a smaller anisotropic (possibly nodal) gap on the 3D holelike Fermi surface pockets centered at the Z point in the Brillouin zone. These results nicely fit into the theoretical picture for the appearance of nodal superconductivity in 122 compounds.

The electronic specific heat of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (x=0 to 1.0) from 2K to 380K

Using a high-resolution differential technique we have determined the electronic specific heat coefficient gamma(T) of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 with x=0 to 1.0, at temperatures (T) from 2K to 380K and in magnetic fields H=0 to 13T. In the normal state gamma_n(x,T) increases strongly with x at low temperature, compatible with a mass renormalisation ~12 at x=1, and decreases weakly with x at high temperature. A superconducting transition is seen in all samples from x=0.2 to 1, with transition temperatures and condensation energies peaking sharply at x=0.4. Superconducting coherence lengths xi_{ab}~20Å and xi_c~3Å are estimated from an analysis of Gaussian fluctuations. For many dopings we see features in the H and T-dependences of gamma_s(T,H) in the superconducting state that suggest superconducting gaps in three distinct bands. A broad "knee" and a sharp mean-field-like peak are typical of two coupled gaps. However, several samples show a shoulder above the sharp peak with an abrupt onset at T_{c,s} and a T-dependence gamma_s(T)\propto\sqrt{1-T/T_{c,s}}. We provide strong evidence that the shoulder is not due to doping inhomogeneity and suggest it is a distinct gap with an unconventional T-dependence Delta_s(T)\propto(1-T/T_{c,s})^{0.75} near T_{c,s}. We estimate band fractions and T=0 gaps from 3-band alpha-model fits to our data and compare the x-dependences of the band fractions with spectroscopic studies of the Fermi surface.

Vortex lock-in transition and evidence for transitions among commensurate kinked vortex configurations in single-layered Fe arsenides

We report an angle-dependent study of the magnetic torque $τ(θ)$ within the vortex state of single-crystalline LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$FeAs and SmO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$FeAs as a function of both temperature $T$ and magnetic field $H$. Sharp peaks are observed at a critical angle $θ_c$ at either side of $θ=90^{\circ}$, where $θ$ is the angle between $H$ and the inter-planar \emph{c}-axis. $θ_c$ is interpreted as the critical depinning angle where the vortex lattice, pinned and locked by the intrinsic planar structure, unlocks and acquires a component perpendicular to the planes. We observe a series of smaller replica peaks as a function of $θ$ and as $θ$ is swept away from the planar direction. These suggest commensurability effects between the period of the vortex lattice and the inter-planar distance leading to additional kinked vortex configurations.

Bulk electronic structure of superconducting LaRu2P2 single crystals measured by soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We present a soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES) study of the stoichiometric pnictide superconductor LaRu2P2. The observed electronic structure is in good agreement with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. However, it is significantly different from its counterpart in high-temperature superconducting Fe-pnictides. In particular the bandwidth renormalization present in the Fe-pnictides (~2 - 3) is negligible in LaRu2P2 even though the mass enhancement is similar in both systems. Our results suggest that the superconductivity in LaRu2P2 has a different origin with respect to the iron pnictides. Finally we demonstrate that the increased probing depth of SX-ARPES, compared to the widely used ultraviolet ARPES, is essential in determining the bulk electronic structure in the experiment.

Superfluid density and superconducting gaps of RbFe_{2}As_{2} as a function of hydrostatic pressure

The superfluid density and superconducting gaps of superconducting RbFe_{2}As_{2} have been determined as a function of temperature, magnetic field and hydrostatic pressure by susceptibility and muon-spin spectroscopy measurements. From the data, fundamental microscopic parameters of the superconducting state like the London penetration depth λ, the gap values Δ, the upper critical field B_{c2}, and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κhave been obtained. In accordance with earlier measurements the ratio of the superfluid density n_{s} \propto λ^{-2} to the superconducting transition temperature T_{c}=2.52(2) K at ambient pressure is found to be much larger in the strongly hole-overdoped RbFe_{2}As_2 than in high-T_{c} Fe-based and other unconventional superconductors. As a function of pressure T_{c} strongly decreases with a rate of dT_{c}/dp = -1.32 K/GPa, i.e. it is reduced by 52 % at p = 1 GPa. The temperature dependence of n_{s} is best described by a two gap s-wave model with both superconducting gaps being decreased by hydrostatic pressure until smaller gap completely disappears at p = 1 GPa.

{Rearrangement of the antiferromagnetic ordering at high magnetic fields in SmFeAsO and SmFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ single crystals

The low-temperature antiferromagnetic state of the Sm-ions in both nonsuperconducting SmFeAsO and superconducting SmFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ single crystals was studied by magnetic torque, magnetization, and magnetoresistance measurements in magnetic fields up to 60~T and temperatures down to 0.6~K. We uncover in both compounds a distinct rearrangement of the antiferromagnetically ordered Sm-moments near $35-40$~T. This is seen in both, static and pulsed magnetic fields, as a sharp change in the sign of the magnetic torque, which is sensitive to the magnetic anisotropy and hence to the magnetic moment in the $ab$-plane, ({\it i.e.} the FeAs-layers), and as a jump in the magnetization for magnetic fields perpendicular to the conducting planes. This rearrangement of magnetic ordering in $35-40$~T is essentially temperature independent and points towards a canted or a partially polarized magnetic state in high magnetic fields. However, the observed value for the saturation moment above this rearrangement, suggests that the complete suppression of the antiferromagnetism related to the Sm-moments would require fields in excess of 60~T. Such a large field value is particularly remarkable when compared to the relatively small Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}\simeq5$~K, suggesting very anisotropic magnetic exchange couplings. At the transition, magnetoresistivity measurements show a crossover from positive to negative field-dependence, indicating that the charge carriers in the FeAs planes are sensitive to the magnetic configuration of the rare-earth elements. This is indicates a finite magnetic/electronic coupling between the SmO and the FeAs layers which are likely to mediate the exchange interactions leading to the long range antiferromagnetic order of the Sm ions.

High-field electron spin resonance spectroscopy study of GdO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs superconductors

We report a detailed investigation of GdO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs (x = 0, 0.07 and 0.14) samples by means of high-field/high-frequency electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) together with measurements of thermodynamic and transport properties. The parent GdOFeAs compound exhibits Fe long-range magnetic order below 128 K, whereas both doped samples do not show such order and are superconducting with T$_c$ = 20 K (x = 0.07) and T$_c$ = 45 K (x = 0.14). The Gd$^{3+}$ HF-ESR reveals an appreciable exchange coupling between Gd and Fe moments, through which the static magnetic order is clearly seen in the parent compound. Owing to this coupling, HF-ESR can probe sensitively the evolution of the magnetism in the FeAs planes upon F doping. It is found that in both superconducting samples, where the Fe long-range order is absent, there are short-range, static on the ESR time scale magnetic correlations between Fe spins. Their occurrence on a large doping scale may be indicative of the ground states' coexistence.

Interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in EuFe(2-x)Co(x)As2 studied by 57Fe and 151Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy

The compound EuFe(2-x)Co(x)As2 was investigated by means of the 57Fe and 151Eu Moessbauer spectroscopy versus temperature (4.2 - 300 K) for x=0 (parent), x=0.34 - 0.39 (superconductor) and x=0.58 (overdoped). It was found that spin density wave (SDW) is suppressed by Co-substitution, however it survives in the region of superconductivity, but iron spectra exhibit some non-magnetic component in the superconducting region. Europium orders anti-ferromagnetically regardless of the Co concentration with the spin re-orientation from the a-axis in the parent compound toward c-axis with the increasing replacement of iron by cobalt. The re-orientation takes place close to the a-c plane. Some trivalent europium appears in EuFe(2-x)Co(x)As2 versus substitution due to the chemical pressure induced by Co-atoms and it experiences some transferred hyperfine field from Eu2+. Iron experiences some transferred field due to the europium ordering for substituted samples in the SDW and non-magnetic state both, while the transferred field is undetectable in the parent compound. Superconductivity coexists with the 4f-europium magnetic order within the same volume. It seems that superconductivity has some filamentary character in EuFe(2-x)Co(x)As2 and it is confined to the non-magnetic component seen by the iron Moessbauer spectroscopy.

Interplay between spin density wave and superconductivity in '122' iron pnictides: 57Fe Mössbauer study

Iron-based superconductors Ba0.7Rb0.3Fe2As2 and CaFe1.92Co0.08As2 of the '122' family have been investigated by means of the 14.41-keV Moessbauer transition in 57Fe versus temperature ranging from the room temperature till 4.2 K. A comparison is made with the previously investigated parent compounds BaFe2As2 and CaFe2As2. It has been found that Moessbauer spectra of these superconductors are composed of the magnetically split component due to development of spin density wave (SDW) and non-magnetic component surviving even at lowest temperatures. The latter component is responsible for superconductivity. Hence, the superconductivity occurs in the part of the sample despite the sample is single phase. This phenomenon is caused by the slight variation of the dopant concentration across the sample (crystal).

Interplay of composition, structure, magnetism, and superconductivity in SmFeAs1-xPxO1-y

Polycrystalline samples and single crystals of SmFeAs1-xPxO1-y were synthesized and grown employing different synthesis methods and annealing conditions. Depending on the phosphorus and oxygen content, the samples are either magnetic or superconducting. In the fully oxygenated compounds the main impact of phosphorus substitution is to suppress the Néel temperature TN of the spin density wave (SDW) state, and to strongly reduce the local magnetic field in the SDW state, as deduced from muon spin rotation measurements. On the other hand the superconducting state is observed in the oxygen deficient samples only after heat treatment under high pressure. Oxygen deficiency as a result of synthesis at high pressure brings the Sm-O layer closer to the superconducting As/P-Fe-As/P block and provides additional electron transfer. Interestingly, the structural modifications in response to this variation of the electron count are significantly different when phosphorus is partly substituting arsenic. Point contact spectra are well described with two superconducting gaps. Magnetic and resistance measurements on single crystals indicate an in-plane magnetic penetration depth of 200 nm and an anisotropy of the upper critical field slope of 4-5. Multi-band superconductivity in LaFeAsO_{0.9}F_{0.1} single crystals probed by high-field vortex torque magnetometry

To probe manifestations of multiband superconductivity in oxypnictides, we measured the angular dependence of the magnetic torque $τ(θ)$ in the mixed state of LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$FeAs single crystals as a function of temperature $T$ and magnetic fields $H$ up to 18 T. The paramagnetic contribution of the Fe ions is properly treated in order to extract the effective mass anisotropy parameter $γ=(m_c/m_{ab})^{1/2}$ from $τ(θ)$. We show that $γ$ depends strongly on both $T$ and $H$, reaching a maximum value of $\sim$ 10 followed by a decrease towards values close to 1 as $T$ is lowered. The observed field dependencies of the London penetration depth $λ_{ab}$ and $γ$ suggest the onset of suppression of a superconducing gap at $H \approx H_{c2}/3$.

Muon-spin rotation measurements of the magnetic penetration depth in the Fe-based superconductor Ba_(1-x)Rb_(x)Fe2As2

Measurements of the magnetic penetration depth (lambda) in the Fe-based superconductor Ba_(1-x)Rb_xFe_2As_2 (x=0.3, 0.35, 0.4) were carried out using the muon-spin rotation muSR technique. The temperature dependence of lambda is well described by a two-gap s+s-wave scenario with a small gap Delta_1 = 1 - 3 mev and a large gap Delta_2 = 7 - 9 mev. By combining the present data with those obtained for RbFe_2As_2 a decrease of the BCS ratio 2Delta_2/(k_B)(T_c) with increasing Rb content x is observed. On the other hand, the BCS ratio 2Delta_1/(k_B)(T_c) is almost independent of x. In addition, the contribution of Delta_1 to the superfluid density is found to increase with x. These results are discussed in the light of the suppression of interband processes upon hole doping.

Shape of spin density wave versus temperature in AFe2As2 (A=Ca, Ba, Eu): A Mössbauer study

Parent compounds AFe2As2 (A=Ca, Ba, Eu) of the 122 family of the iron-based superconductors have been studied by 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy in the temperature range 4.2 K - ~300 K. Spin density waves (SDW) have been found with some confidence. They are either incommensurate with the lattice period or the ratio of the respective periods is far away from ratio of small integers. SDW shape is very unconventional i.e. differs from the sinusoidal shape. Magnetic order starts with lowered temperature as narrow sheets of the significant electron spin density separated by areas with very small spin density. Magnetic sheets are likely to be ordered in the alternate anti-ferromagnetic fashion as the material as whole behaves similarly to collinear anti-ferromagnet. Further lowering of temperature simply expands sheet thickness leading to the near triangular SDW. Finally, sheets fill the whole available space and almost rectangular shape of SDW is reached. Substantial maximum amplitude of SDW appears at the temperature just below the magnetic onset temperature, and this maximum amplitude increases slightly with lowering temperature. The square root from the mean squared hyperfine field behaves versus temperature according to the universality class (1, 2), i.e., with the electronic spin space having dimensionality equal unity and the real space having dimensionality equal two. The more or less pronounced tail above transition temperature due to the development of incoherent SDW is seen.

Strong coupling between Eu2+ spins and Fe2As2 layers in EuFe1.9Co0.1As2 observed with NMR

A combination of x-ray diffraction, magnetization, and 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments were performed on single-crystal EuFe1.9Co0.1As2. The strength of the hyperfine interaction between the 75As nuclei and the Eu^(2+) 4f states suggests a strong coupling between the Eu^(2+) moments and the Fe1.9Co0.1As2 layers. Such a strong interlayer coupling may be due to an indirect exchange interaction between the localized Eu^(2+) 4f moments, mediated by the Fe 3d conduction electrons. Magnetic susceptibility as well as 75As-NMR measurements reveal a decrease of the SDW transition temperature to T_SDW = 120 K as a result of Co doping. A change of the slope in the temperature dependence of the NMR frequency of the 75As lower-satellite line was observed at 225 K. At the same temperature also a change of the satellite line shape was found. These changes of the NMR spectra may be caused by the formation of a nematic phase below 225 K in EuFe1.9Co0.1As2.

Study of the anisotropic magnetic order of the Eu sublattice in single crystals of EuFe_2-xCo_xAs_2 (x = 0, 0.2) by means of magnetization and magnetic torque

Here, we present a combination of magnetization and magnetic torque experiments to investigate the magnetic orders in undoped EuFe2As2 and Co doped EuFe1.8Co0.2As2 single crystals. Although at low temperatures typical results for an antiferromagnetic (AFM) state in EuFe2As2 were found, our data strongly indicate the occurrence of a canted antiferromagnetic (C-AFM) order of the Eu2+ moments between 17 K and 19 K, observed even in the lowest studied magnetic fields. However, unlike in the parent compound, no low-field and low-temperature AFM state of the Eu^2+ moments was observed in the doped EuFe1.8Co0.2As2. Only a C-AFM phase is present at low fields and low temperatures, with a reduced magnetic anisotropy as compared to the undoped system. We present and discuss for both, EuFe2As2 and EuFe1.8Co0.2As2, the experimentally deduced magnetic phase diagrams of the magnetic ordering of the Eu^2+ sublattice with respect to the temperature, the applied magnetic field, and its orientation to the crystallographic axes. It is likely that the magnetic coupling of the Eu and the Fe sublattice is strongly depending on Co doping, having detrimental influence on the magnetic phase diagrams as determined in this work. Their impact on the occurrence of superconductivity with higher Co doping is discussed.

Anomalies in the Fermi surface and band dispersion of quasi-one-dimensional CuO chains in the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu4O8

We have investigated the electronic states in quasi one dimensional (1D) CuO chains by microprobe Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy. We find that the quasiparticle Fermi surface consists of six disconnected segments, consistent with recent theoretical calculations that predict the formation of narrow, elongated Fermi surface pockets for coupled CuO chains. In addition, we find a strong renormalization effect with a significant kink structure in the band dispersion. The properties of this latter effect [energy scale (~40 meV), temperature dependence and behavior with Zn-doping] are identical to those of the bosonic mode observed in CuO2 planes of high temperature superconductors, indicating they have a common origin.

Fermi-surface of underdoped LaFeAsO1-xFx as determined by the Haas-van Alphen-effect

Here, we present a de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect1 study on the newly discovered LaFeAsO1-xFx compounds2,3 in order to unveil the topography of the Fermi surface associated with their antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases, which is essential for understanding their magnetism, pairing symmetry and superconducting mechanism. Calculations 4 and surface-sensitive measurements 5,6,7 provided early guidance, but lead to contradictory results, generating a need for a direct experimental probe of their bulk Fermi surface. In antiferromagnetic LaFeAsO1-xFx 8,9 we observe a complex pattern in the Fourier spectrum of the oscillatory component superimposed onto the magnetic torque signal revealing a reconstructed Fermi surface, whose geometry is not fully described by band structure calculations. Surprisingly, several of the same frequencies, or Fermi surface cross-sectional areas, are also observed in superconducting LaFeAsO1-xFx (with a superconducting transition temperature Tc ~ 15 K). Although one could attribute this to inhomogeneous F doping, the corresponding effective masses are largely enhanced with respect to those of the antiferromagnetic compound. Instead, this implies the microscopic coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism on the same Fermi surface in the underdoped region of the phase diagram of the LaFeAsO1-xFx series. Thus, the dHvA-effect reveals a more complex Fermi surface topography than that predicted by band structure calculations4 upon which the currently proposed superconducting pairing scenarios10,11,12,13 are based, which could be at the origin of their higher Tcs when compared to their phosphide analogs.

Field Dependent Superfluid Density in the Optimally Doped SmFeAsO_(1-x)F_y Superconductor

The magnetic field dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth for optimally doped SmFeAsO_(1-x)F_y was investigated by combining torque magnetometry, SQUID magnetometry, and muon-spin rotation. The results obtained from these techniques show all a pronounced decrease of the superfluid density as the field is increased up to 1.4 T. This behavior is analysed within a two-band model with self-consistently derived coupled gaps, where the superfluid density related to the larger gap is field independent and the superfluid density related to the smaller gap is strongly suppressed with increasing field.

Microscopic Study of the Superconducting State of the Iron Pnictide RbFe_2As_2

A study of the temperature and field dependence of the penetration depth λof the superconductor RbFe_2As_2 (T_c=2.52 K) was carried out by means of muon-spin rotation measurements. In addition to the zero temperature value of the penetration depth λ(0)=267(5) nm, a determination of the upper critical field B_c2(0)=2.6(2) T was obtained. The temperature dependence of the superconducting carrier concentration is discussed within the framework of a multi-gap scenario. Compared to the other "122" systems which exhibit much higher Fermi level, a strong reduction of the large gap BCS ratio 2Δ/k_B T_c is observed. This is interpreted as a consequence of the absence of interband processes. Indications of possible pair-breaking effect are also discussed.

Nernst effect in single crystals of the pnictide superconductor CaFe1.92Co0.08As2 and parent compound CaFe2As2

We report a combined study of the Nernst coefficient (v), Hall effect and thermoelectric power of CaFe2As2 and CaFe1.92Co0.08As2 single crystals. The absolute value of v in both samples is enhanced, probably due to ambipolar flow of electron- and hole-like quasiparticles. The onset of spin-density-wave order in CaFe2As2 causes further rapid rise of the Nernst coefficient. On the contrary, in the CaFe1.92Co0.08As2 crystal we do not see any feature of v(T), which could be clearly associated with SDW fluctuations. In this Co-doped sample there is also no noticeable increase in of v in the vicinity of superconducting transition, despite the expectation of such due to vortex movement.

Th substituted SmFeAsO: structural details and superconductivity with Tc above 50 K

Superconducting poly- and single-crystalline samples of Sm1-xThxFeAsO with partial substitution of Sm3+ by Th4+ were synthesized and grown under high pressure and their structural, magnetic and transport properties are studied. The superconducting Tc reaches values higher than 50 K. Bulk superconducting samples (x = 0.08, 0.15, 0.3) do not show any signs of a phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic crystal structure at low temperatures. With Th substitution the unit cell parameters a and c shrink and the fractional atomic coordinate of the As site zAs remains almost unchanged, while that of Sm/Th zSm/Th increases. Upon warming from 5 K to 295 K the expansion of the FeAs layer thickness is dominant, while the changes in the other structural building blocks are smaller by a factor of 1/5, and they compensate each other, since the As-Sm/Th distance appears to contract by about the same amount as the O-Sm/Th expands. The poly- and single-crystalline samples are characterized by a full diamagnetic response in low magnetic field, by a high intergrain critical-current density for polycrystalline samples, and by a critical current density of the order of 8 x 105 A/cm2 for single crystals at 2 K in fields up to 7 T. The magnetic penetration depth anisotropy γλ increases with decreasing temperature, a similar behavior to that of SmFeAsO1-xFy single crystals. The upper critical field estimated from resistance measurements is anisotropic with slopes of 5.4 T/K (H//ab plane) and 2.7 T/K (H//c axis), at temperatures sufficiently far below Tc. The upper critical field anisotropy γH is in the range of 2, consistent with the tendency of a decreasing γH with decreasing temperature, already reported for SmFeAsO1-xFy single crystals.

The electronic specific heat of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 from 2K to 380K

Using a differential technique, we have measured the specific heats of polycrystalline Ba1-xKxFe2As2 samples with x=0, 0.1 and 0.3, between 2K and 380K and in magnetic fields 0 to 13 Tesla. From this data we have determined the electronic specific heat coefficient, gamma, over the entire range for the three samples. The most heavily doped sample (x=0.3) exhibits a large superconducting anomaly Delta gamma(Tc)~48mJ/molK^2 at Tc=35K, and we determine the energy gap, condensation energy, superfluid density and coherence length. In the normal state for the x=0.3 sample, gamma~47 mJ/molK^2 is constant from Tc to 380K. In the parent compound (x=0) there is a large almost first order anomaly at the spin density wave (SDW) transition at To=136K. This anomaly is smaller and broader for x=0.1. At low T, gamma is strongly reduced by the SDW gap for both x=0 and 0.1, but above To, gamma for all three samples are similar.

Bulk Superconductivity at 2.6 K in Undoped RbFe_2As_2

The iron arsenide RbFe_2As_2 with the ThCr_2Si_2-type structure is found to be a bulk superconductor with T_c=2.6 K. The onset of diamagnetism was used to estimate the upper critical field H_c2(T), resulting in dH_c2/dT=-1.4 T/K and an extrapolated H_c2(0)=2.5 T. As a new representative of iron pnictide superconductors, superconducting RbFe_2As_2 contrasts with BaFe_2As_2, where the Fermi level is higher and a magnetic instability is observed. Thus, the solid solution series (Rb,Ba)Fe_2As_2 is a promising system to study the crossover from superconductivity to magnetism.

Evidence of spin-density-wave order in RFeAsO from measurements of thermoelectric power

Data on the magneto-thermopower and specific heat of three compounds belonging to '1111' oxypnictides family are reported. One specimen (SmAsFeO0.8F0.2) is a superconductor with Tc = 53 K, while two others (SmAsFeO and NdAsFeO) are nonsuperconducting parent compounds. Our results confirm that spin density wave (SDW) order is present in SmAsFeO and NdAsFeO. In these two samples a strict connection between the thermoelectric power and electronic specific heat is found in the vicinity of SDW transition, what indicates that the chemical potential of charge carriers strongly depends on temperature in this region. Low temperature data suggest presence of significant contribution magnon-drag to the thermoelectric power.

High-field phase-diagram of Fe arsenide superconductors

Here, we report an overview of the phase diagram of single layered and double layered Fe arsenide superconductors at high magnetic fields. Our systematic magnetotransport measurements of polycrystalline SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ at different doping levels confirm the upward curvature of the upper critical magnetic field $H_{c2}(T)$ as a function of temperature $T$ defining the phase boundary between the superconducting and metallic states for crystallites with the ab planes oriented nearly perpendicular to the magnetic field. We further show from measurements on single crystals that this feature, which was interpreted in terms of the existence of two superconducting gaps, is ubiquitous among both series of single and double layered compounds. In all compounds explored by us the zero temperature upper critical field $H_{c2}(0)$, estimated either through the Ginzburg-Landau or the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg single gap theories, strongly surpasses the weak coupling Pauli paramagnetic limiting field. This clearly indicates the strong coupling nature of the superconducting state and the importance of magnetic correlations for these materials. Our measurements indicate that the superconducting anisotropy, as estimated through the ratio of the effective masses $γ= (m_c/m_{ab})^{1/2}$ for carriers moving along the c-axis and the ab planes, respectively, is relatively modest as compared to the high-$T_c$ cuprates, but it is temperature, field and even doping dependent. Finally, our preliminary estimations of the irreversibility field $H_m(T)$, separating the vortex-solid from the vortex-liquid phase in the single layered compounds, indicates that it is well described by the melting of a vortex lattice in a moderately anisotropic uniaxial superconductor.

Muon-spin rotation measurements of the penetration depth of the Mo_3Sb_7 superconductor

Measurements of the magnetic field penetration depth λin superconductor Mo_3Sb_7 (T_c~2.1 K) were carried out by means of muon-spin-rotation. The absolute values of λ, the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ, the first H_{c1} and the second H_{c2} critical fields at T=0 are λ(0)=720(100)nm, κ(0)=55(9), μ_0H_{c1}(0)=1.8(3)mT, and μ_0H_{c2}(0)=1.9(2)T. The zero temperature value of the superconducting energy gap Δ(0) was found to be 0.35(1)meV corresponding to the ratio 2Δ(0)/k_BT_c=3.83(10). At low temperatures λ^{-2}(T) saturates and becomes constant below T~0.3T_c, in agreement with what is expected for s-wave BCS superconductors. Our results suggest that Mo_3Sb_7 is a BCS superconductor with the isotropic energy gap

Single crystals of LnFeAsO1-xFx (Ln=La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) and Ba1-xRbxFe2As2: growth, structure and superconducting properties

A review of our investigations on single crystals of LnFeAsO1-xFx (Ln=La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) and Ba1-xRbxFe2As2 is presented. A high pressure technique has been applied for the growth of LnFeAsO1-xFx crystals, while Ba1-xRbxFe2As2 crystals were grown using quartz ampoule method. Single crystals were used for electrical transport, structure, magnetic torque and spectroscopic studies. Investigations of the crystal structure confirmed high structural perfection and show less than full occupation of the (O, F) position in superconducting LnFeAsO1-xFx crystals. Resistivity measurements on LnFeAsO1-xFx crystals show a significant broadening of the transition in high magnetic fields, whereas the resistive transition in Ba1 xRbxFe2As2 simply shifts to lower temperature. Critical current density for both compounds is relatively high and exceeds 2x109 A/m2 at 15 K in 7 T. The anisotropy of magnetic penetration depth, measured on LnFeAsO1-xFx crystals by torque magnetometry is temperature dependent and apparently larger than the anisotropy of the upper critical field. Ba1-xRbxFe2As2 crystals are electronically significantly less anisotropic. Point-Contact Andreev-Reflection spectroscopy indicates the existence of two energy gaps in LnFeAsO1-xFx. Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy reveals in addition to a superconducting gap, also some feature at high energy (~20 meV).

A new triclinic modification of the pyrochlore-type KOs2O6 superconductor

A new modification of KOs2O6, the representative of a new structural type (Pearson symbol aP18, a=5.5668(1)A, b=6.4519(2)A, c=7.2356(2)A, space group P-1, no.2) was synthesized employing high pressure technique. Its structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure can be described as two OsO6 octahedral chains relating to each other through inversion and forming big voids with K atoms inside. Quantum chemical calculations were performed on the novel compound and structurally related cubic compound. High-pressure X-ray study showed that cubic KOs2O6 phase was stable up to 32.5(2) GPa at room temperature.
