Chaotic stochastic resonance in Mackey-Glass equations

Stochastic resonance (SR) manifests as switching dynamics between two quasi-stationary states in the stochastic Mackey-Glass equation. We identify chaotic SR, arising from the coexistence of resonance and chaos in stochastic dynamics. In contrast to classical SR, which is described by a random point attractor with a negative largest Lyapunov exponent, chaotic SR is described by a random strange attractor with a positive largest Lyapunov exponent. We observe chaotic SR in the Mackey-Glass equation as well as chaotic SR in the Duffing equation and the underdamped FitzHugh-Nagumo equation, demonstrating the universality of this phenomenon across a broad class of strongly nonlinear random dynamical systems.

Existence of multiple noise-induced transitions in a Lasota-Mackey map

We prove the existence of multiple noise-induced transitions in the Lasota-Mackey map, which is a class of one dimensional random dynamical system with additive noise. The result is achieved by the help of rigorous computer assisted estimates. We first approximate the stationary distribution of the random dynamical system and then compute certified error intervals for the Lyapunov exponent. We find that the sign of the Lyapunov exponent changes at least three times when increasing the noise amplitude. We also show numerical evidence that the standard non-rigorous numerical approximation by finite-time Lyapunov exponent is valid with our model for a sufficiently large number of iterations. Our method is expected to work for a broad class of nonlinear stochastic phenomena.

A random dynamical systems perspective on stochastic resonance

We study stochastic resonance in an over-damped approximation of the stochastic Duffing oscillator from a random dynamical systems point of view. We analyse this problem in the general framework of random dynamical systems with a nonautonomous forcing. We prove the existence of a unique global attracting random periodic orbit and a stationary periodic measure. We use the stationary periodic measure to define an indicator for the stochastic resonance.

Sensitivity, entropy, and escape rates at the onset of chaos

We analytically link three properties of nonlinear dynamical systems, namely sensitivity to initial conditions, entropy production, and escape rate, in $z$-logistic maps for both positive and zero Lyapunov exponents. We unify these relations at chaos, where the Lyapunov exponent is positive, and at its onset, where it vanishes. Our result unifies, in particular, two already known cases, namely (i) the standard entropy rate in the presence of escape, valid for exponential functionality rates with strong chaos, and (ii) the Pesin-like identity with no escape, valid for the power-law behavior present at points such as the Feigenbaum one.
