Distributed Optimization with Inexact Oracle

In this paper, we study the distributed optimization problem using approximate first-order information. We suppose the agent can repeatedly call an inexact first-order oracle of each individual objective function and exchange information with its time-varying neighbors. We revisit the distributed subgradient method in this circumstance and show its suboptimality under square summable but not summable step sizes. We also present several conditions on the inexactness of the local oracles to ensure an exact convergence of the iterative sequences towards the global optimal solution. A numerical example is given to verify the efficiency of our algorithm.

Nash Equilibrium Seeking Over Directed Graphs

In this paper, we aim to develop distributed continuous-time algorithms over directed graphs to seek the Nash equilibrium in a noncooperative game. Motivated by the recent consensus-based designs, we present a distributed algorithm with a proportional gain for weight-balanced directed graphs. By further embedding a distributed estimator of the left eigenvector associated with zero eigenvalue of the graph Laplacian, we extend it to the case with arbitrary strongly connected directed graphs having possible unbalanced weights. In both cases, the Nash equilibrium is proven to be exactly reached with an exponential convergence rate. An example is given to illustrate the validity of the theoretical results.

Neural Network-based Constrained Optimal Coordination for Heterogeneous Uncertain Nonlinear Multi-agent Systems

In this paper, we investigate a constrained optimal coordination problem for a class of heterogeneous nonlinear multi-agent systems described by high-order dynamics subject to both unknown nonlinearities and external disturbances. Each agent has a private objective function and a steady-state constraint about its output. We develop a composite distributed controller for each agent by a combination of internal model and neural network. All agent outputs are proven to reach the constrained minimal point of the aggregate objective function with bounded residual errors irrespective of the unknown nonlinearities and external disturbances. Two examples are finally given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Resonant chiral effects in nonlinear dielectric metasurfaces

We study the resonant enhancement of linear and nonlinear chiroptical effects in asymmetric silicon metasurfaces supporting multipolar Mie resonances and quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs). We demonstrate theoretically and observe in experiment the pronounced linear circular dichroism at the quasi-BIC resonances. We further find that both local field enhancement and third-harmonic signal are large for Mie resonances and some quasi-BIC modes. We explain the selectivity of the nonlinear enhancement by employing the concept of critical coupling being more favorable for the modes with moderately large radiative quality factors ($Q$ factors). We demonstrate experimentally strong nonlinear chiroptical response associated with high efficiency of the third-harmonic generation and large nonlinear circular dichroism varying from $+0.918\pm0.049$ to $-0.771\pm0.004$ for the samples with different asymmetries. We believe our results suggest a general strategy for engineering nonlinear chiroptical response in dielectric resonant metasurfaces.

Nash Equilibrium Seeking for High-order Multi-agent Systems with Unknown Dynamics

In this paper, we consider a Nash equilibrium seeking problem for a class of high-order multi-agent systems with unknown dynamics. Different from existing results for single integrators, we aim to steer the outputs of this class of uncertain high-order agents to the Nash equilibrium of some noncooperative game in a distributed manner. To overcome the difficulties brought by the high-order structure, unknown nonlinearities, and the regulation requirement, we first introduce a virtual player for each agent and solve an auxiliary noncooperative game for them. Then, we develop a distributed adaptive protocol by embedding this auxiliary game dynamics into some proper tracking controller for the original agent to resolve this problem. We also discuss the parameter convergence problem under certain persistence of excitation condition. The efficacy of our algorithms is verified by numerical examples.

A Dielectric Metasurface Optical Chip for the Generation of Cold Atoms

Compact and robust cold atom sources are increasingly important for quantum research, especially for transferring cutting-edge quantum science into practical applications. In this letter, we report on a novel scheme that utilizes a metasurface optical chip to replace the conventional bulky optical elements used to produce a cold atomic ensemble with a single incident laser beam, which is split by the metasurface into multiple beams of the desired polarization states. Atom numbers $~10^7$ and temperatures (about 35 $μ$K) of relevance to quantum sensing are achieved in a compact and robust fashion. Our work highlights the substantial progress towards fully integrated cold atom quantum devices by exploiting metasurface optical chips, which may have great potential in quantum sensing, quantum computing and other areas.

Multi-agent Optimal Consensus with Unknown Control Directions

This paper studies an optimal consensus problem for a group of heterogeneous high-order agents with unknown control directions. Compared with existing consensus results, the consensus point is further required to an optimal solution to some distributed optimization problem. To solve this problem, we first augment each agent with an optimal signal generator to reproduce the global optimal point of the given distributed optimization problem, and then complete the global optimal consensus design by developing some adaptive tracking controllers for these augmented agents. Moreover, we present an extension when only real-time gradients are available. The trajectories of all agents in both cases are shown to be well-defined and achieve the expected consensus on the optimal point. Two numerical examples are given to verify the efficacy of our algorithms.

Optimal Output Consensus for Nonlinear Multi-agent Systems with Both Static and Dynamic Uncertainties

In this technical note, we investigate an optimal output consensus problem for heterogeneous uncertain nonlinear multi-agent systems. The considered agents are described by high-order nonlinear dynamics subject to both static and dynamic uncertainties. A two-step design, comprising sequential constructions of optimal signal generator and distributed partial stabilization feedback controller, is developed to overcome the difficulties brought by nonlinearities, uncertainties, and optimal requirements. Our study can not only assure an output consensus, but also achieve an optimal agreement characterized by a distributed optimization problem.

Coordination of Heterogeneous Nonlinear Multi-Agent Systems with Prescribed Behaviors

In this paper, we consider a coordination problem for a class of heterogeneous nonlinear multi-agent systems with a prescribed input-output behavior which was represented by another input-driven system. In contrast to most existing multi-agent coordination results with an autonomous (virtual) leader, this formulation takes possible control inputs of the leader into consideration. First, the coordination was achieved by utilizing a group of distributed observers based on conventional assumptions of model matching problem. Then, a fully distributed adaptive extension was proposed without using the input of this input-output behavior. An example was given to verify their effectiveness.

Coordination of Multi-Agent Systems under Switching Topologies via Disturbance Observer Based Approach

In this paper, a leader-following coordination problem of heterogeneous multi-agent systems is considered under switching topologies where each agent is subject to some local (unbounded) disturbances. While these unknown disturbances may disrupt the performance of agents, a disturbance observer based approach is employed to estimate and reject them. Varying communication topologies are also taken into consideration, and their byproduct difficulties are overcome by using common Lyapunov function techniques. According to the available information in difference cases, two disturbance observer based protocols are proposed to solve this problem. Their effectiveness is verified by simulations.

Distributed Output Regulation for a Class of Nonlinear Multi-Agent Systems with Unknown-Input Leaders

In this paper, a distributed output regulation problem is formulated for a class of uncertain nonlinear multi-agent systems subject to local disturbances. The formulation is given to study a leader-following problem when the leader contains unknown inputs and its dynamics is different from those of the followers. Based on the conventional output regulation assumptions and graph theory, distributed feedback controllers are constructed to make the agents globally or semi-globally follow the uncertain leader even when the bound of the leader's inputs is unknown to the followers.

Output consensus of nonlinear multi-agent systems with unknown control directions

In this paper, we consider an output consensus problem for a general class of nonlinear multi-agent systems without a prior knowledge of the agents' control directions. Two distributed Nussbaumtype control laws are proposed to solve the leaderless and leader-following adaptive consensus for heterogeneous multiple agents. Examples and simulations are given to verify their effectiveness

Robust Consensus Tracking of Heterogeneous Multi-Agent Systems under Switching Topologies

In this paper, we consider a robust consensus tracking problem of heterogeneous multi-agent systems with time-varying interconnection topologies. Based on common Lyapunov function and internal model techniques, both state and output feedback control laws are derived to solve this problem. The proposed design is robust by admitting some parameter uncertainties in the multi-agent system.
