Quantum vacuum energy and geometry of extra dimension

We discuss the cancellation of the ultraviolet cutoff scale $Λ_{\rm cut}$ in the calculation of the expectation value of the five-dimensional (5D) energy-momentum tensor $\langle T_{MN}\rangle$ ($M,N=0,1,\cdots,4$). Since 5D fields feel the background geometry differently depending on their spins, the bosonic and the fermionic contributions to the $Λ_{\rm cut}$-dependent part $\langle T_{MN}\rangle^{\rm UV}$ may have different profiles in the extra dimension. In that case, there is no chance for them to be cancelled with each other. We consider arbitrary numbers of scalar and spinor fields with arbitrary bulk masses, calculate $\langle T_{MN}\rangle$ using the 5D propagators, and clarify the dependence of $\langle T_{MN}\rangle^{\rm UV}$ on the extra-dimensional coordinate $y$ for a general background geometry of the extra dimension. We find that if the geometry is not flat nor (a slice of) anti-de Sitter (AdS) space, it is impossible to cancel $\langle T_{MN}\rangle^{\rm UV}$ between the bosonic and the fermionic contributions. This may suggest that the flat (or AdS) space is energetically favored over the other geometries, and thus the dynamics forces the compact space to be flat (or AdS).

Spacetime evolution during moduli stabilization in radiation dominated era beyond 4D effective theory

We investigate the time evolution of the background spacetime during the moduli stabilization process, which is assumed to occur in the radiation dominated era. The setup is basically the Salam-Sezgin model, but we add a potential term for the dilaton in order to stabilize the moduli completely. We numerically solve the higher-dimensional background field equations, including a case that the stabilization process cannot be described within the 4D effective theory. In contrast to the conventional 4D effective theory analysis, we find that when the mass scale of the stabilization is larger than the compactification scale, the radiation contribution to the total energy density remains to be non-negligible for a much longer time than the stabilization time scale. As a result, the non-compact 3D space expands slower than the matter dominated universe. We also find the equation of state for the radiation $w_{\rm rad}$ remains to be smaller than 1/3 for a long time, which indicates that the radiation still feels the extra dimensions for a while even after the moduli are stabilized.

UV sensitivity of Casimir energy

We quantitatively estimate the effect of the UV physics on the Casimir energy in a five-dimensional (5D) model on $S^1/Z_2$. If the cutoff scale of the 5D theory is not far from the compactification scale, the UV physics may affect the low energy result. We work in the cutoff regularization scheme by introducing two independent cutoff scales for the spatial momentum in the non-compact space and for the Kaluza-Klein masses. The effects of the UV physics are incorporated as a damping effect of the contributions to the vacuum energy around the cutoff scales. We numerically calculate the Casimir energy and evaluate the deviation from the result obtained in the zeta-function regularization, which does not include information on the UV physics. We find that the result well agrees with the latter for the Gaussian-type damping, while it can deviate for the kink-type one.

Fate of domain walls in 5D gravitational theory with compact extra dimension

We pursue the time evolution of the domain walls in 5D gravitational theory with a compact extra dimension by numerical calculation. In order to avoid a kink-antikink pair that decays into the vacuum, we introduce a topological winding in the field space. In contrast to the case of non-gravitational theories, there is no static domain-wall solution in the setup. In the case that the minimal value of the potential is non-negative, we find that both the 3D space and the extra dimension will expand at late times if the initial value of the Hubble parameter is chosen as positive. The wall width almost remains constant during the evolution. In other cases, the extra dimension diverges and the 3D space shrinks to zero at a finite time.

KK-mode contribution to the crossover scale for the brane-induced force

We discuss contributions of the KK modes to the crossover length scale $r_{\rm c}$ for the brane-induced force when the brane is given by a solitonic background field. We work in a 5D scalar model with a domain-wall background that mimics the DGP model. In spite of the infinite number of the KK modes, the crossover scale remains finite due to the warping effect on the ambient space of the domain wall. The inclusion of the KK modes relaxes the hierarchy among the model parameters that is required to realize a phenomenologically viable size of $r_{\rm c}$. We also discuss whether a nontrivial dilaton background enlarges $r_{\rm c}$ or not.

Behaviors of two supersymmetry breaking scales in $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity

We study the supersymmetry breaking patterns in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauged supergravity. The model contains multiple (Abelian) vector multiplets and a single hypermultiplet which parametrizes SO$(4,1)/{\rm{SO}}(4)$ coset. We derive the expressions of two gravitino masses under {\it{general}} gaugings and prepotential based on the embedding tensor formalism, and discuss their behaviors in some concrete models. Then we confirm that in a single vector multiplet case, the partial breaking always occurs when the third derivative of the prepotential exists at the vacuum, which is consistent with the result of Ref.~\cite{Antoniadis:2018blk}, but we can have several breaking patterns otherwise. The discussion is also generalized to the case of multiple vector multiplets, and we found that the full ($\mathcal{N}=0$) breaking occurs even if the third derivative of the prepotential is nontrivial.

Spinning vortex braneworld

A spinning vortex is considered in the context of the braneworld. We numerically analyze the profiles of a stationary solution in a six-dimensional U(1) gauge theory, and clarify their dependence on the angular velocity in the field space $ω$. We find that there is an upper limit on $ω$, and the vortex configuration should be parameterized by the angular momentum rather than $ω$. We also discuss matter modes localized on the vortex. We show that the vortex spin mixes the KK masses and induces nonvanishing masses to the zero-modes. It also resolves the degeneracy in the KK spectrum that the static vortex had.

Spectrum in the presence of brane-localized mass on torus extra dimensions

The lightest mass eigenvalue of a six-dimensional theory compactified on a torus is numerically evaluated in the presence of the brane-localized mass term. The dependence on the cutoff scale $Λ$ is non-negligible even when $Λ$ is two orders of magnitude above the compactification scale, which indicates that the mass eigenvalue is sensitive to the size of the brane, in contrast to five-dimensional theories. We obtain an approximate expression of the lightest mass in the thin brane limit, which well fits the numerical calculations, and clarifies its dependence on the torus moduli parameter $τ$. We find that the lightest mass is typically much lighter than the compactification scale by an order of magnitude even in the limit of a large brane mass.

Yukawa couplings in 6D gauge-Higgs unification on $T^2/Z_N$ with magnetic fluxes

We discuss the Yukawa couplings in 6D gauge-Higgs unification models on $T^2/Z_N$ in the presence of magnetic fluxes. We provide general formulae for them, and numerically evaluate their magnitude in a specific model on $T^2/Z_3$. Thanks to the nontrivial profiles of the zero-mode wave functions, the top quark Yukawa coupling can be reproduced without introducing a large representation of the gauge group for matter fields. However, it is difficult to realize small Yukawa couplings only by the magnetic fluxes and the Wilson-line phases because of the complicated structure of the mode functions on $T^2/Z_N$ ($N=3,4,6$).

Massive vector multiplet inflation with Dirac-Born-Infeld type action

We investigate the inflation model with a massive vector multiplet in a case that the action of the vector multiplet is extended to the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) type one. We show the massive DBI action in 4 dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity, and find that the higher order corrections associated with the DBI-extension make the scalar potential flat with a simple choice of the matter couplings. We also discuss the DBI-extension of the new minimal Starobinsky model, and find that it is dual to a special class of the massive DBI action.

N=1 superfield description of six-dimensional supergravity

We express the action of six-dimensional supergravity in terms of four-dimensional N=1 superfields, focusing on the moduli dependence of the action. The gauge invariance of the action in the tensor-vector sector is realized in a quite nontrivial manner, and it determines the moduli dependence of the action. The resultant moduli dependence is intricate, especially on the shape modulus. Our result is reduced to the known superfield actions of six-dimensional global SUSY theories and of five-dimensional supergravity by replacing the moduli superfields with their background values and by performing the dimensional reduction, respectively.

N=1 superfield description of vector-tensor couplings in six dimensions

We express supersymmetric couplings among the vector and the tensor multiplets in six dimensions (6D) in terms of N=1 superfields. The superfield description is derived from the invariant action in the projective superspace. The obtained expression is consistent with the known superfield actions of 6D supersymmetric gauge theory and 5D Chern-Simons theory after the dimensional reduction. Our result provides a crutial clue to the N=1 superfield description of 6D supergravity.

6D gauge-Higgs unification on T^2/Z_N with custodial symmetry

We investigate the gauge-Higgs unification models compactified on T^2/Z_N that have the custodial symmetry. We select possible gauge groups, orbifolds and representations of the matter fermions that are consistent with the custodial symmetry, by means of the group theoretical analysis. The best candidate we found is 6D SU(3)_C x U(4) gauge theory on T^2/Z_3 and the third generation quarks are embedded into bulk fermions that are the symmetric traceless rank-2 tensor of SO(6).

Impacts of non-geometric moduli on effective theory of 5D supergravity

5D supergravity generically has non-geometric moduli other than the radion that belong to 5D vector multiplets. We summarize the impacts of such moduli on 4D effective theory of 5D supergravity on S^1/Z_2. We mainly discuss the structure of the effective Kahler potential including the one-loop quantum corrections. As an illustrative example, we construct a model in which the size of the extra dimension is stabilized at an exponentially large value compared to the Planck length, which is similar to the LARGE volume scenario in string theory.

Natural realization of large extra dimension in 5D supersymmetric theory

An exponentially large extra dimension can be naturally realized by the Casimir energy and the gaugino condensation in 5D supersymmetric theory. The model does not require any hierarchies among the 5D parameters. The key ingredient is an additional modulus other than the radion, which generically exists in 5D supergravity. SUSY is broken at the vacuum, which can be regarded as the Scherk-Schwarz SUSY breaking. We also analyze the mass spectrum and discuss some phenomenological aspects.

One-loop Kaehler potential in 5D gauged supergravity with generic prepotential

We calculate one-loop contributions to the Kaehler potential in 4D effective theory of 5D gauged supergravity (SUGRA) on S^1/Z_2 with a generic form of the prepotential and arbitrary boundary terms. Our result is applicable to a wide class of 5D SUGRA models. The derivation is systematically performed by means of an N=1 superfield formalism based on the superconformal formulation of 5D SUGRA. As an illustrative example, we provide an explicit expression of the Kaehler potential in the case of 5D flat spacetime.

Modulus stabilization and IR-brane kinetic terms in gauge-Higgs unification

We discuss the modulus stabilization by the Casimir energy and various effects of IR-brane kinetic terms for the gauge fields in a gauge-Higgs unification model in the warped spacetime, where the Wilson line phase $θ_H$ is determined as $θ_H=π/2$. We find that the brane kinetic terms with O(1) coefficients are necessary for the modulus stabilization. On the other hand, large brane kinetic terms can deviate 4D gauge couplings from the standard model values and also cause too light Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes. In the parameter region that ensures the modulus stabilization, the KK gluon appears below 1 TeV, which marginally satisfies the experimental bound. The allowed parameter region will be enlarged in a model where a smaller value of $θ_H$ is realized.

Radion and Higgs masses in gauge-Higgs unification

We evaluate the radion and Higgs masses in the gauge-Higgs unification models on the warped geometry, in which the modulus is stabilized by the Casimir energy. We analyze the one-loop effective potential and clarify the dependences of those masses on the Wilson line phase $θ_H$. The radion mass varies 1-30GeV for $0.06\leq\sinθ_H\leq 0.3$, while the Higgs mass is 150-200 GeV and depends on $θ_H$ only logarithmically. The radion couplings to the standard model particles are sensitive to the warp factor, and are too small to detect at colliders in the region where the five-dimensional description is valid.

Roles of Z_2-odd N=1 multiplets in off-shell dimensional reduction of 5D supergravity

We discuss the dimensional reduction of five-dimensional supergravity compactified on S^1/Z_2 keeping the N=1 off-shell structure. Especially we clarify the roles of the Z_2-odd N=1 multiplets in such an off-shell dimensional reduction. Their equations of motion provide constraints on the Z_2-even multiplets and extract the zero modes from the latter. The procedure can be applied to wide range of models and performed in a background-independent way. We demonstrate it in some specific models.

SUSY flavor structure of generic 5D supergravity models

We perform a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the SUSY flavor structure of generic 5D supergravity models on $S^1/Z_2$ with multiple $Z_2$-odd vector multiplets that generate multiple moduli. The SUSY flavor problem can be avoided due to contact terms in the 4D effective Kähler potential peculiar to the multi-moduli case. A detailed phenomenological analysis is provided based on an illustrative model.

Tree-level unitarity in Gauge-Higgs Unification

We numerically estimate a scale $Λ_{uni}$ at which tree-level unitarity is violated in the $SO(5)\times U(1)_X$ gauge-Higgs unification model by evaluating amplitudes for scattering of the longitudinal W bosons. The scattering amplitudes take larger values in the warped spacetime than in the flat spacetime, and take maximal values when $θ_H=π/2$, where $θ_H$ is the Wilson line phase along the extra dimension. We take into account not only the elastic scattering but also possible inelastic scatterings in order to estimate $Λ_{\rm uni}$. We found that $Λ_{\rm uni}\simeq 1.3m_{KK}$ in the warped spacetime, and $Λ_{\rm uni}\simeq 140m_{KK}$ in the flat spacetime, where $m_{KK}$ is the Kaluza-Klein mass scale. The tree-level unitarity is violated at $O(1TeV)$ for $θ_H=π/2$ in the former case due to the vanishing WWH coupling.

iGUT: Grand Unified Theory on Interval

We investigate a construction of five-dimensional (5D) grand unified theories (GUTs) on an interval, which we call iGUTs. We analyze supersymmetric SO(10) iGUT as an example, where the gauge multiplet is spread over the 5D bulk. The SO(10) is directly reduced to the standard model gauge symmetry through the interval boundary conditions. Notice that this rank reduction is impossible in case of GUTs on orbifolds. Four scenarios are possible according to locations (bulk or brane) of Higgs and matter fields. We investigate the gauge-coupling unification, the proton decay, the SO(10) GUT features such as t-b-tau unification and so on in each scenario. We also comment on the flavor phenomenology.

Supersymmetry breaking in a warped slice with Majorana-type masses

We study the five-dimensional (5D) supergravity compactified on an orbifold S^1/Z_2, where the U(1)_R symmetry is gauged by the graviphoton with Z_2-even coupling. In contrast to the case of gauging with Z_2-odd coupling, this class of models has Majorana-type masses and allows the Scherk-Schwarz (SS) twist even in the warped spacetime. Starting from the off-shell formulation, we show that the supersymmetry is always broken in an orbifold slice of AdS_5, irrespective of the value of the SS twist parameter. We analyze the spectra of gaugino and gravitino in such background, and find the SS twist can provide sizable effects on them in the small warping region.

Geometry mediated SUSY breaking

We investigate SUSY breaking mediated through the deformation of the space-time geometry due to the backreaction of a nontrivial configuration of a bulk scalar field. To illustrate its features, we work with a toy model in which the bulk is four dimensions. Using the superconformal formulation of SUGRA, we provide a systematic method of deriving the 3D effective action expressed by the superfields, which can basically be extended to 5D SUGRA straightforwardly.

CP violation in models with TeV-scale SUSY breaking

We estimate contributions of the goldstino supermultiplet to the electric dipole moment (EDM) in the case that the SUSY breaking scale Λ_S is of order the TeV scale. We found that such contributions can saturate the experimental bound if Λ_S is close to the soft mass scale. We also discuss EDM in the gaugino mediated scenario on the warped geometry as an example of models with the TeV-scale SUSY breaking.

Superfield Description of Effective Theories on BPS Domain Walls

We derive the low-energy effective theory on the BPS domain wall in 4D N=1 global SUSY theories in terms of the 3D superfields. Our derivation makes the preserved SUSY by the wall manifest and the procedure for integrating out the massive modes easier. Our procedure clarifies how the 3D superfields are embedded into the 4D chiral and vector superfields. We also point out a shortcoming of the conventional procedure for deriving the effective theory on the wall.

The Higgs mass bound in the SUSY multi-Higgs-doublet model

The upper bound on the mass of the lightest Higgs boson is provided in the supersymmetric standard model with multi-Higgs doublets, up to two-loop order. Relatively large corrections are expected from the experimentally unconstrained extra Yukawa couplings. We calculate it including the two-loop leading-log contributions as a function of the scale $Λ$, below which the theory remains perturbative. Even for $Λ=10^{4}$ GeV, we obtain the upper bound of 140 GeV, which is heavier than that of the MSSM by 10 GeV.
