Catalytic Creation of Bubble Universe Induced by Quintessence in Five Dimensions

We investigate the bubble nucleation in five dimensional spacetime catalyzed by quintessence. We especially focus on decay of a metastable Minkowski vacuum to an anti-de Sitter vacuum and study dynamics of the bubble on which four dimensional expanding universe is realized. We also discuss the trans-Planckian censorship conjecture and impose a constraint on the parameter space of the catalysis. As an application of this model, we propose an inflation mechanism and an origin of the dark energy in the context of quintessence in five dimensions.

Catalytic Creation of Baby Bubble Universe with Small Positive Cosmological Constant

We investigate the decay of metastable de Sitter, Minkowski and anti-de Sitter vacua catalyzed by a black hole and a cloud of strings. We apply the method to the creation of the four dimensional bubble universe in the five dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime recently proposed by Banerjee, Danielsson, Dibitetto, Giri and Schillo. We study the bounce action for the creation and find that the bubble with very small cosmological constant, of order $Λ^{(4)}/M^2_4 \sim 10^{-120}$, is favored by the catalysis by assuming appropriate mass scales of the black hole and the cloud of strings to reproduce the present energy densities of matter and radiation in the bubble universe.

Instability of Higgs Vacuum via String Cloud

We study the instability of the Higgs vacuum caused by a cloud of strings. By catalysis, the decay rate of the vacuum is highly enhanced and, when the energy density of the cloud is larger than the critical value, a semi-classical vacuum decay occurs. We also discuss the relation between the string cloud and observational constraints on the cosmic strings from the viewpoint of the catalysis, which are converted into bounds on the parameters of the Higgs potential.

Baryon as Impurity for Phase Transition in String Landscape

We consider a decay of a false vacuum in flux compactifications of type IIB string theory and study a catalytic effect for a phase transition induced by a new type of impurities. We concentrate on the large N dual of a D5-brane/anti-D5-brane system which has a rich vacuum structure. We show that D3-branes wrapping the 3-cycles can form a dibaryon and make a bound state with a monopole. We find that these baryon-like objects can make the lifetime of the metastable vacuum shorter.

Decay of False Vacuum via Fuzzy Monopole in String Theory

We investigate dielectric branes in false vacua in Type IIB string theory. The dielectric branes are supported against collapsing by lower energy vacua inside spherical or tube-like branes. We claim that such branes can be seeds for semi-classical (or quantum mechanical) decay of the false vacua, which makes the life-time of the false vacua shorter. Also, we discuss a topology change of a bubble corresponding to the fuzzy monopole triggered by dissolving fundamental strings.

Gravitational Correction to Fuzzy String in Metastable Brane Configuration

We study dynamics of a cosmic string in a metastable brane configuration in Type IIA string theory. We first discuss a decay process of the cosmic string via a fuzzy brane (equivalently bubble/string bound state) by neglecting gravitational corrections in ten-dimension. We find that depending on the strength of the magnetic field induced on the bubble, the decay rate can be either larger or smaller than that of $O(4)$ symmetric bubble. Then, we investigate gravitational corrections to the fuzzy brane by using the extremal black $NS$-five brane solution, which makes the lifetime of the metastable state longer.

Radiation of Supersymmetric Particles from Aharonov-Bohm R-string

We study radiation of supersymmetric particles from an Aharonov-Bohm string associated with a discrete R-symmetry. Radiation of the lightest supersymmetric particle, when combined with the observed dark matter density, imposes constraints on the string tension or the freeze-out temperature of the particle. We also calculate the amplitude for Aharonov-Bohm radiation of massive spin $3/2$ particles.

Instability of colliding metastable strings

The breaking of $U(1)_R$ symmetry plays a crucial role in modeling the breaking of supersymmetry (SUSY). In the models that possess both SUSY preserving and SUSY breaking vacua, tube-like cosmic strings called R-tubes, whose surfaces are constituted by domain walls interpolating a false and a true vacuum with some winding numbers, can exist. Their (in)stability can strongly constrain SUSY breaking models theirselves. In the present study, we investigate the dynamical (in)stability of two colliding metastable tube-like strings by field-theoretic simulations. From them, we find that the strings become unstable, depending on the relative collision angle and speed of two strings, and the false vacuum is eventually filled out by the true vacuum owing to rapid expansion of the strings or unstable bubbles created as remnants of the collision.

More on cosmological constraints on spontaneous R-symmetry breaking models

We study the spontaneous R-symmetry breaking model and investigate the cosmological constraints on this model due to the pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson, R-axion. We consider the R-axion which has relatively heavy mass in order to complement our previous work. In this regime, model parameters, R-axions mass and R-symmetry breaking scale, are constrained by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and overproduction of the gravitino produced from R-axion decay and thermal plasma. We find that the allowed parameter space is very small for high reheating temperature. For low reheating temperature, the U(1)_R breaking scale f_a is constrained as f_a<10^{12-14}GeV regardless of the value of R-axion mass.

Brane Realization of Nambu Monopoles and Electroweak Strings

In the standard model, the electroweak Z-string can end on a Nambu monopole, whose mass is calculated to be 689 GeV from the current precise experimental data assuming the new particle with mass 125 GeV to be the Higgs boson. We study an extension of the standard model with additional singlet and triplet Higgs fields in the framework of N=1 supersymmetric field theory by using a D-brane configuration in type IIA string theory. We construct a D-brane configuration describing the electroweak symmetry breaking, and find a single D2-brane configuration describing a Z-string and a Nambu monopole attached by a Z-string in the standard model without an adjoint Higgs field. We further find a single D2-brane configuration describing a composite of a 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole and a Nambu monopole attached by a Z-string in an extended standard model with an adjoint Higgs field. We compute the binding energy of the 't Hooft-Polyakov and Nambu monopoles by solving a minimal surface area of a D2-brane.

Cosmological constraints on spontaneous R-symmetry breaking models

We study general constraints on spontaneous R-symmetry breaking models coming from the cosmological effects of the pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons, R-axions. They are substantially produced in the early Universe and may cause several cosmological problems. We focus on relatively long-lived R-axions and find that in a wide range of parameter space, models are severely constrained. In particular, R-axions with mass less than 1 MeV are generally ruled out for relatively high reheating temperature, $T_R>10$ GeV.

Discrete Gauge Symmetry and Aharonov-Bohm Radiation in String Theory

We investigate cosmological constraints on phenomenological models with discrete gauge symmetries by discussing the radiation of standard model particles from Aharonov-Bohm strings. Using intersecting D-brane models in Type IIA string theory, we demonstrate that Aharonov-Bohm radiation, when combined with cosmological observations, imposes constraints on the compactification scales.

Comments on Gaugino Mass and Landscape of Vacua

In direct gauge mediation, gaugino masses often vanish at the leading order of supersymmetry breaking. Recently, this phenomenon is understood in connection with the global structure of vacua in O'Raifeartaigh-type models. In this note, we further explore a connection between gaugino masses and the landscape of vacua in more general situations, focusing on a few examples which demonstrate our idea. In particular, we present a calculable model with non-vanishing leading order gaugino masses on the lowest energy vacuum.

Constraints on Direct Gauge Mediation Models with Complex Representations

We discuss constraints from cosmology on the models with direct gauge mediation based on the ISS supersymmetry breaking models. It is a generic feature that the ISS models possess a U(1) symmetry which is eventually spontaneously broken, when the models are based on the gauge symmetries with complex representations. We show that the resultant pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson causes problems in cosmology, which leads to severe constraints on the models. We also show that most parameter space of the models can be probed by observing gravitational waves emitted from the cosmic string network when the U(1) symmetry is a gauge symmetry.

Light Gauginos and Conformal Sequestering

In a wide class of direct and semi-direct gauge mediation models, it has been observed that the gaugino masses vanish at leading order. It implies that there is a hierarchy between the gaugino and sfermion masses, invoking a fine-tuning problem in the Higgs sector via radiative corrections. In this paper, we explore the possibility of solving this anomalously light gaugino problem exploiting strong conformal dynamics in the hidden sector. With a mild assumption on the anomalous dimensions of the hidden sector operators, we show that the next to leading order contributions to the gaugino masses can naturally be in the same order as the sfermion masses. μ/B_μproblem is also discussed.

Direct Mediation of Meta-Stable Supersymmetry Breaking

The supersymmetric SU(Nc) Yang-Mills theory coupled to Nf matter fields in the fundamental representation has meta-stable vacua with broken supersymmetry when Nc < Nf < 3/2 Nc. By gauging the flavor symmetry, this model can be coupled directly to the standard model. We show that it is possible to make a slight deformation to the model so that gaugino masses are generated and the Landau pole problem can be avoided. The deformed model has simple realizations on intersecting branes in string theory, where various features of the meta-stable vacua are encoded geometrically as brane configurations.

Higgsing and Superpotential Deformations of ADE Superconformal Theories

We study large classes of renormalization group flows, driven by scalar expectation values or mesonic superpotential terms, away from the conformal fixed points of the 4d supersymmetric gauge theories with $ADE$-type superpotentials. The $a$-maximization procedure allows us to compute the $R$ charges and to check the $a$-theorem conjecture. For a theory obtained by Higgsing the $D_{k+2}$ theory, we use the magnetic dual description proposed by Brodie to determine the parameter region where the resulting theory is at a non-trivial conformal fixed point.

Pouliot Type Duality via a-Maximization

We study four-dimensional N=1 Spin(10) gauge theory with a single spinor and vectors at the superconformal fixed point via the electric-magnetic duality and a-maximization. When gauge invariant chiral primary operators hit the unitarity bounds, we find that the theory with no superpotential is identical to the one with some superpotential at the infrared fixed point. The auxiliary field method in the electric theory offers a satisfying description of the infrared fixed point, which is consistent with the better picture in the magnetic theory. In particular, it gives a clear description of the emergence of new massless degrees of freedom in the electric theory.

More on N=1 Matrix Model Curve for Arbitrary N

Using both the matrix model prescription and the strong-coupling approach, we describe the intersections of n=0 and n=1 non-degenerated branches for quartic (polynomial of adjoint matter) tree-level superpotential in N=1 supersymmetric SO(N)/USp(2N) gauge theories with massless flavors. We also apply the method to the degenerated branch. The general matrix model curve on the two cases we obtain is valid for arbitrary N and extends the previous work from strong-coupling approach. For SO(N) gauge theory with equal massive flavors, we also obtain the matrix model curve on the degenerated branch for arbitrary N. Finally we discuss on the intersections of n=0 and n=1 non-degenerated branches for equal massive flavors.

Supersymmetric Gauge Theories with Flavors and Matrix Models

We present two results concerning the relation between poles and cuts by using the example of N=1 U(N_c) gauge theories with matter fields in the adjoint, fundamental and anti-fundamental representations. The first result is the on-shell possibility of poles, which are associated with flavors and on the second sheet of the Riemann surface, passing through the branch cut and getting to the first sheet. The second result is the generalization of hep-th/0311181 (Intriligator, Kraus, Ryzhov, Shigemori, and Vafa) to include flavors. We clarify when there are closed cuts and how to reproduce the results of the strong coupling analysis by matrix model, by setting the glueball field to zero from the beginning. We also make remarks on the possible stringy explanations of the results and on generalization to SO(N_c) and USp(2N_c) gauge groups.

The Matrix Model Curve Near the Singularities

In N=1 supersymmetric SO(N)/USp(2N) gauge theories with the tree-level superpotential W(Φ) that is an arbitrary polynomial of the adjoint matter Φ, the massless fluctuations about each quantum vacuum are described by U(1)^n gauge theory. By turning on the parameters of W(Φ) to the special values, the singular vacua where the additional fields become massless can be reached. Using the matrix model prescription, we study the intersections of n=0 and n=1 branches. The general formula for the matrix model curve at the singularity which is valid for arbitrary N is obtained and this generalizes the previous results for small values of N from strong-coupling approach. Applying the analysis to the degenerated case, we also obtain a general matrix model curve which is not only valid at a special point but also on the whole branch.

Phases of N=1 SO(N_c) Gauge Theories with Flavors

We studied the phase structures of ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric $SO(N_c)$ gauge theory with $N_f$ flavors in the vector representation as we deformed the ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric QCD by adding the superpotential of arbitrary polynomial for the adjoint chiral scalar field. Using weak and strong coupling analyses, we determined the most general factorization forms for various breaking patterns. We observed all kinds of smooth transitions for quartic superpotential.

Comments on Effective Superpotentials via Matrix Models

Dijkgraaf and Vafa have conjectured that the effective superpotentials for N=1 four-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories can be given by the planar diagrams of matrix models. We examine some special models with cubic and quartic tree level superpotentials for adjoint chiral superfield Φ. We consider the effective superpotentials for the classical vacuum Φ=0 for U(N) and SO(N)/Sp(N) gauge theories. We evaluate the effective superpotentials exactly in terms of the matrix model and in terms of closed string theory on Calabi-Yau geometry with fluxes. As a result we find their perfect agreements.

Confining Phase Superpotentials for SO/Sp Gauge Theories via Geometric Transition

We examine a large N duality via geometric transition for N=1 SO/Sp gauge theories with superpotential for adjoint chiral superfield. In this paper, we find that the large N gauge theories are exactly analyzed for the classical quartic superpotentials by the finite rank SO/Sp gauge theories. With this classical superpotentials, we evaluate the confining phase superpotentials using the Seiberg-Witten theory. In the dual theory, we calculate the superpotential generated by the R-R and NS-NS 3-form fluxes. As the non-trivial examples, we discuss for SO(6), SO(8) and Sp(4) gauge theories. In these cases we have the perfect agreement of the confining phase superpotentials up to the 4th order of the glueball superfields.
