Anomaly flow by an Aharonov-Bohm phase

In gauge-Higgs unification (GHU), gauge symmetry is dynamically broken by an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phase, $θ_H$, in the fifth dimension. We analyze $SU(2)$ GHU with an $SU(2)$ doublet fermion in flat $M^4 \times (S^1/Z_2)$ spacetime and in the Randall-Sundrum (RS) warped space. With orbifold boundary conditions the $U(1)$ part of gauge symmetry remains unbroken at $θ_H = 0$ and $π$. The fermion multiplet has chiral zero modes at $θ_H = 0$, which become massive at $θ_H = π$. In other words chiral fermions are transformed to vectorlike fermions by the AB phase $θ_H$. Chiral anomaly at $θ_H = 0$ continuously varies as $θ_H$ and vanishes at $θ_H=π$. We demonstrate this intriguing phenomenon in the RS space in which there occurs no level crossing in the mass spectrum and everything varies smoothly. The flat spacetime limit is singular as the AdS curvature of the RS space diminishes, and reproduces the result in the flat spacetime. Anomalies appear for various combinations of Kaluza-Klein excitation modes of gauge fields as well. Although the magnitude of anomalies depends on $θ_{H}$ and the warp factor of the RS space, it does not depend on the bulk mass parameter of the fermion field controlling its mass and wave function at general $θ_H$.

Bhabha scattering in the gauge-Higgs unification

We examine effects of $Z'$ bosons in gauge-Higgs unification (GHU) models at $\mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-}\to \mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-}$ Bhabha scatterings. We evaluate differential cross sections in Bhabha scatterings including $Z'$ bosons in two types of $\mathrm{SO}(5) \times \mathrm{U}(1) \times \mathrm{SU}(3)$ GHU models. We find that deviations of differential cross sections in the GHU models from those in the SM can be seen at $\sqrt{s} = 250\,\mathrm{GeV}$. With $80\%$-longitudinally polarized electron and $30\%$-longitudinally polarized positron beams, the left-right asymmetries in the GHU A- and B-models are resolved at more than $3\,σ$ at $L_{\rm int} =250\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. We also show that Bhabha scattering with scattering angle less than 100 mrad can be safely used as luminosity measurements in $\mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-}$ colliders since the effects of $Z'$ bosons are well suppressed for small scattering angle. We propose a new observable which can be measured at future TeV-scale $\mathrm{e}^{+} \mathrm{e}^{-}$ linear colliders.

Probing the minimal $U(1)_X$ model at future electron-positron colliders via the fermion pair-production channel

The minimal $U(1)_X$ extension of the Standard Model (SM) is a well-motivated new physics scenario, where anomaly cancellation dictates new neutral gauge boson ($Z^\prime$) couplings with the SM fermions in terms of the $U(1)_X$ charges of the new scalar fields. We investigate the SM charged fermion pair-production process for different values of these $U(1)_X$ charges at future $e^-e^+$ colliders: $e^+e^-\to f\bar f$. Apart from the standard $γ$ and $Z$-mediated processes, this model features additional $s$-channel (or both $s$ and $t$-channel when $f=e^-$) $Z^\prime$ exchange which interferes with the SM processes. We first estimate the bounds on the $U(1)_X$ coupling $(g^\prime)$ and the $Z^\prime$ mass $(M_{Z^\prime})$ considering the latest dilepton and dijet constraints from the heavy resonance searches at the LHC. Then using the allowed values of $g^\prime$, we study the angular distributions, forward-backward $(\mathcal{A}_{\rm{FB}})$, left-right $(\mathcal{A}_{\rm{LR}})$ and left-right forward-backward $(\mathcal{A}_{\rm{LR, FB}})$ asymmetries of the $f\bar{f}$ final states. We find that these observables can show substantial deviations from the SM results in the $U(1)_X$ model, thus providing a powerful probe of the multi-TeV $Z^\prime$ bosons at future $e^+e^-$ colliders.

Signals of $W'$ and $Z'$ bosons at the LHC in the $SU(3) \times SO(5) \times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification

The $pp\to \{W, W'\} \to lν$ and $pp\to \{γ, Z, Z'\} \to l^+l^-$ ($l=e,μ$) processes in the $SU(3)_C\times SO(5)\times U(1)_X$ gauge-Higgs unification (GHU) models are studied, where $W'$ and $Z'$ bosons are Kaluza-Klein (KK) exited states of the electroweak gauge bosons. From the experimental data collected at the Large Hadron Collider, constraints on the KK mass scale and the Aharonov-Bohm phase are obtained. One can explore the KK mass scale in the GUT inspired GHU model up to 18 TeV for the luminosity 300 fb$^{-1}$ and 22 TeV for the luminosity 3000 fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV.

Universality in Anomaly Flow

Universality in anomaly flow by an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phase $θ_H$ is shown in the flat $M^4 \times (S^1/Z_2)$ spacetime and in the Randall-Sundrum (RS) warped space. We analyze $SU(2)$ gauge theory with doublet fermions. With orbifold boundary conditions the $U(1)$ part of gauge symmetry remains unbroken at $θ_H = 0$ and $π$. Chiral anomalies smoothly vary with $θ_H$ in the RS space. It is shown that anomaly coefficients associated with this anomaly flow are expressed in terms of the values of the wave functions of gauge fields at the UV and IR branes in the RS space. The anomaly coefficients depend on $θ_H$, the warp factor of the RS space, and the orbifold boundary conditions for fermions, but not on the bulk mass parameters of fermions.

CKM matrix and FCNC suppression in $SO(5) \times U(1) \times SU(3)$ gauge-Higgs unification

The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) mixing matrix and flavor-changing neutral currents (FCNC's) in the quark sector are examined in the GUT inspired $SO(5) \times U(1) \times SU(3)$ gauge-Higgs unification in which the 4D Higgs boson is identified with the Aharonov-Bohm phase in the fifth dimension. Gauge invariant brane interactions play an important role for the flavor mixing in the charged-current weak interactions. The CKM matrix is reproduced except that the up quark mass needs to be larger than the observed one. FCNC's are naturally suppressed as a consequence of the gauge invariance, with a factor of order $10^{-6}$. It is also shown that induced flavor-changing Yukawa couplings are extremely small.

Fermion pair production at $e^- e^+$ linear collider experiments in GUT inspired gauge-Higgs unification

Fermion pair production at $e^-e^+$ linear collider experiments with polarized $e^-$ and $e^+$ beams is examined in the GUT inspired $SO(5)\times U(1)\times SU(3)$ gauge-Higgs unification. There arises large parity violation in the couplings of leptons and quarks to Kaluza-Klein (KK) excited neutral vector bosons $Z'$s, which leads to distinctive polarization dependence in cross sections, forward-backward asymmetries, left-right asymmetries, and left-right forward-backward asymmetries in various processes. Those effects are detectable even for the KK mass scale up to about 15 TeV at future $e^-e^+$ linear collider experiments with energies 250$\,$GeV to 1$\,$TeV.

The effective potential and universality in GUT inspired gauge-Higgs unification

The effective potential for the Aharonov-Bohm phase $θ_H$ in the fifth dimension in GUT inspired $SO(5)\times U(1) \times SU(3)$ gauge-Higgs unification is evaluated to show that dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking takes place with $θ_H \not= 0$, the 4D Higgs boson mass 125$\,$GeV being generated at the quantum level. The cubic and quartic self-couplings $(λ_3, λ_4)$ of the Higgs boson are found to satisfy universal relations, i.e. they are determined, to high accuracy, solely by $θ_H$, irrespective of values of other parameters in the model. For $θ_H=0.1$ ($0.15$), $λ_3$ and $λ_4$ are smaller than those in the standard model by 7.7% (8.1%) and 30% (32%), respectively.

$H\to Zγ$ in the gauge-Higgs unification

The decay rate of the Higgs decay $H \to Z γ$ is evaluated at the one-loop level in the $SO(5)\times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification. Although an infinite number of loops with Kaluza-Klein states contribute to the decay amplitude, there appears the cancellation among the loops, and the decay rate is found to be finite and non-zero. It is found that the decay rate is well approximated by the decay rate in the standard model multiplied by $\cos^2θ_H$, where $θ_H$ is the Aharonov-Bohm phase induced by the vacuum expectation value of an extra-dimensional component of the gauge field.

Gauge-Higgs EW and Grand Unification

4D Higgs field is identified with the extra-dimensional component of gauge potentials in the gauge-Higgs unification scenario. $SO(5) \times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs EW unification in the Randall-Sundrum warped space is successful at low energies. The Higgs field appears as an Aharonov-Bohm phase $θ_H$ in the fifth dimension. Its mass is generated at the quantum level and is finite. The model yields almost the same phenomenology as the standard model for $θ_H < 0.1$, and predicts $Z'$ bosons around 6 - 10 TeV with very broad widths. The scenario is genelarized to $SO(11)$ gauge-Higgs grand unification. Fermions are introduced in the spinor and vector representations of $SO(11)$. Proton decay is naturally forbidden.

Toward Realistic Gauge-Higgs Grand Unification

The $SO(11)$ gauge-Higgs grand unification in the Randall-Sundrum warped space is presented. The 4D Higgs field is identified as the zero mode of the fifth dimensional component of the gauge potentials, or as the fluctuation mode of the Aharonov-Bohm phase $θ_H$ along the fifth dimension. Fermions are introduced in the bulk in the spinor and vector representations of $SO(11)$. $SO(11)$ is broken to $SO(4) \times SO(6)$ by the orbifold boundary conditions, which is broken to $SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y \times SU(3)_C$ by a brane scalar. Evaluating the effective potential $V_{\rm eff} (θ_H)$, we show that the electroweak symmetry is dynamically broken to $U(1)_{\rm EM}$. The quark-lepton masses are generated by the Hosotani mechanism and brane interactions, with which the observed mass spectrum is reproduced. The proton decay is forbidden thanks to the new fermion number conservation. It is pointed out that there appear light exotic fermions. The Higgs boson mass is determined with the quark-lepton masses given, which, however, turns out smaller than the observed value.

Gauge-Higgs Grand Unification

$SO(11)$ gauge-Higgs grand unification in the Randall-Sundrum warped space is proposed. Orbifold boundary conditions and one brane scalar field reduce $SO(11)$ to the standard model symmetry, which is further broken to $SU(3)_C \times U(1)_{EM}$ by the Hosotani mechanism. In a minimal model quarks and leptons are contained in a multiplet in ${\bf 32}$ of $SO(11)$ in each generation. Proton decay is naturally suppressed by a conserved fermion number.

Gauge-Higgs Grand Unification

Gauge-Higgs grand unification is formulated. By extending $SO(5) \times U(1)_X$ gauge-Higgs electroweak unification, strong interactions are incorporated in $SO(11)$ gauge-Higgs unification in the Randall-Sundrum warped space. Quarks and leptons are contained in spinor and vector multiplets of $SO(11)$. Although the KK scale can be as low as $10 $ TeV, proton decay is forbidden by a conserved fermion number in the absence of Majorana masses of neutrinos.

Dark matter in the $SO(5)\times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification

In the $SO(5) \times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification the lightest, neutral component of $n_F$ $SO(5)$-spinor fermions (dark fermions), which are relevant for having the observed unstable Higgs boson, becomes the dark matter of the universe. We show that the relic abundance of the dark matter determined by WMAP and Planck data is reproduced, below the bound placed by the direct detection experiment by LUX, by a model with one light and three heavier ($n_F=4$) dark fermions with the lightest one of a mass from 2.3$\,$TeV to 3.1$\,$TeV. The corresponding Aharonov-Bohm phase $θ_H$ in the fifth dimension ranges from 0.097 to 0.074. The case of $n_F=3$ ($n_F = 5, 6$) dark fermions yields the relic abundance smaller (larger) than the observed limit.

LHC signals of the $SO(5)\times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification

Signatures of the $SO(5)\times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification at LHC and future colliders are explored. The Kaluza-Klein (KK) mass spectra of $γ, Z, Z_R$ and the Higgs self-couplings obey universality relations with the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phase $θ_H$ in the fifth dimension. The current data at low energies and at LHC indicate $θ_H <0.2$. Couplings of quarks and leptons to KK gauge bosons are determined. Three neutral gauge bosons, the first KK modes $Z_R^{(1)}$, $Z^{(1)}$, and $γ^{(1)}$, appear as $Z'$ bosons in dilepton events at LHC. For $θ_H = 0.114$, the mass and decay width of $Z_R^{(1)}$, $Z^{(1)}$, and $γ^{(1)}$ are (5.73TeV, 482GeV), (6.07TeV, 342GeV), and (6.08TeV, 886GeV), respectively. For $θ_H = 0.073$ their masses are 8.00TeV$\sim$8.61TeV. An excess of events in the dilepton invariant mass should be observed in the $Z'$ search at the upgraded LHC at 14TeV.

Polyakov loops and the Hosotani mechanism on the lattice

We explore the phase structure and symmetry breaking in four-dimensional SU(3) gauge theory with one spatial compact dimension on the lattice ($16^3 \times 4$ lattice) in the presence of fermions in the adjoint representation with periodic boundary conditions. We estimate numerically the density plots of the Polyakov loop eigenvalues phases, which reflect the location of minima of the effective potential in the Hosotani mechanism. We find strong indication that the four phases found on the lattice correspond to SU(3)-confined, SU(3)-deconfined, SU(2) x U(1), and U(1) x U(1) phases predicted by the one-loop perturbative calculation. The case with fermions in the fundamental representation with general boundary conditions, equivalent to the case of imaginary chemical potentials, is also found to support the $Z_3$ symmetry breaking in the effective potential analysis.

126 GeV Higgs boson and universality relations in the $SO(5) \times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification

The Higgs boson mass $m_H=126 $GeV in the $SO(5) \times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification in the Randall-Sundrum space leads to important consequences. An universal relation is found between the Kaluza-Klein (KK) mass scale $m_{KK}$ and the Aharonov-Bohm phase $θ_H$ in the fifth dimension; $m_{KK} \sim 1350\,{\rm GeV}/(\sin θ_H)^{0.787}$. The cubic and quartic self-couplings of the Higgs boson become smaller than those in the SM, having universal dependence on $θ_H$. The decay rates $H \rightarrow γγ, gg$ are evaluated by summing contributions from KK towers. Corrections coming from KK excited states turn out very small. With $θ_H= 0.1 \sim 0.35$, the mass of the first KK $Z$ is predicted to be $2.5 \sim 6 \, $TeV.

We establish a correspondence between the phases found on the lattice and the gauge symmetry breaking by the Hosotani mechanism.

Novel universality and Higgs decay H -> γγ, gg in the SO(5) x U(1) gauge-Higgs unification

The SO(5) x U(1) gauge-Higgs unification in the Randall-Sundrum warped space with the Higgs boson mass m_H=126 GeV is constructed. An universal relation is found between the Kaluza-Klein (KK) mass scale $m_{KK}$ and the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phase $θ_H$ in the fifth dimension; $m_{KK} \sim 1350 GeV/(sin θ_H)^{0.787}$. The cubic and quartic self-couplings of the Higgs boson become smaller than those in the standard model (SM), having universal dependence on $θ_H$. The decay rates H -> γγ, gg are evaluated by summing contributions from KK towers. Corrections coming from KK excited states are finite and about 0.2% (2%) for $θ_H= 0.12 (0.36)$, branching fractions of various decay modes of the Higgs boson remaining nearly the same as in the SM. The signal strengths of the Higgs decay modes relative to the SM are $\sim cos^2 θ_H$. The mass of the first KK $Z$ is predicted to be $5.9 (2.4)$TeV for $θ_H= 0.12 (0.36)$. We also point out the possible enhancement of $Γ(H -> γγ)$ due to the large $U(1)_X$ charge of new fermion multiplets.

Gauge-Higgs Unification Approach

When the extra dimensional space is not simply-connected, dynamics of the AB phase in the extra dimension can induce dynamical gauge symmetry breaking by the Hosotani mechanism. This opens up a new way of achieving unification of gauge forces. It leads to the gauge-Higgs unification. The Hosotani mechanism can be established nonperturbatively by lattice simulations, in which measurements of the Polyakov line give a clue.

Realistic SO(5) x U(1) Model in RS Space

The gauge bosons and Englert-Brout-Higgs (EBH) boson are unified in the five dimensional RS spacetime. The EBH boson is identified with a part of the fifth dimensional component of the gauge potential. In the SO(5) x U(1) gauge-Higgs unification the EW symmetry is dynamically broken. The EBH boson, predicted with a mass around 130 GeV, naturally becomes stable so that it appears as missing energy and momentum in collider experiments. SUSY breaking scales in the gauge-Higgs unification

In the $SO(5) \times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification in the Randall-Sundrum (RS) warped space the Higgs boson naturally becomes stable. The model is consistent with the current collider signatures only for a large warp factor $z_L > 10^{15}$ of the RS space. In order for stable Higgs bosons to explain the dark matter of the Universe the Higgs boson must have a mass $m_h = 70 \sim 75$ GeV, which can be obtained in the non-SUSY model with $z_L \sim 10^5$. We show that this discrepancy is resolved in supersymmetric gauge-Higgs unification where a stop mass is about $300 \sim 320 $GeV and gauginos in the electroweak sector are light.

Collider signatures of the SO(5) x U(1) gauge-Higgs unification

Collider signatures of the $SO(5) \times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification model in the Randall-Sundrum warped space are explored. Gauge couplings of quarks and leptons receive small corrections from the fifth dimension whose effects are tested by the precision data. It is found that the forward-backward asymmetries in $e^+e^-$ collisions on the $Z$ pole are well explained in a wide range of the warp factor $z_L$, but the model is consistent with the branching fractions of $Z$ decay only for large $z_L \simg 10^{15}$. Kaluza-Klein (KK) spectra of gauge bosons, quarks, and leptons as well as gauge and Higgs couplings of low-lying KK excited states are determined. Right-handed quarks and leptons have larger couplings to the KK gauge bosons than left-handed ones. Production rates of Higgs bosons and KK states at Tevatron, LHC and ILC are evaluated. The first KK $Z$ has a mass 1130 GeV with a width 422 GeV for $z_L = 10^{15}$. The current limit on the $Z'$ production at Tevatron and LHC indicates $z_L >10^{15}$. A large effect of parity violation appears in the difference between the rapidity distributions of $e^+$ and $e^-$ in the decay of the first KK $Z$. The first KK gauge bosons decay into light and heavy quarks evenly.

Stable Higgs Bosons - new candidate for cold dark matter -

The Higgs boson is in the backbone of the standard model of electroweak interactions. It must exist in some form for achieving unification of interactions. In the gauge-Higgs unification scenario the Higgs boson becomes a part of the extra-dimensional component of gauge fields. The Higgs boson becomes absolutely stable in a class of the gauge-Higgs unification models, serving as a promising candidate for cold dark matter in the universe. The observed relic abundance of cold dark matter is obtained with the Higgs mass around 70 GeV. The Higgs-nucleon scattering cross section is found to be close to the recent CDMS II and XENON10 bounds in the direct detection of dark matter. In collider experiments stable Higgs bosons are produced in a pair, appearing as missing energies and momenta so that the way of detecting Higgs bosons must be altered.

The electroweak gauge couplings in SO(5) x U(1) gauge-Higgs unification

The electroweak currents of quarks and leptons in the $SO(5) \times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification model in the Randall-Sundrum warped space are determined. The 4D gauge couplings deviate from those in the standard model and the weak universality is slightly violated. It is shown that the model is free from 4D anomalies and the deviations of the gauge couplings are tiny, less than 1% except for the top quark. The $Zt_L \bar t_L$, $Zt_R \bar t_R$, $Zb_L \bar b_L$ and $Zb_R \bar b_R$ couplings deviate from those in the standard model by -7%, 18%, 0.3% and 0.9% with the warp factor $z_L = 10^{15}$, respectively. The violation of the $μ$-$e$, $τ$-$e$ and $t$-$e$ universality in the charged current interactions is ${\cal O}(10^{-8})$, ${\cal O}(10^{-6})$ and 2.3%, respectively.

Higgs Boson Mass and Electroweak-Gravity Hierarchy from Dynamical Gauge-Higgs Unification in the Warped Spacetime

Dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking by the Hosotani mechanism in the Randall-Sundrum warped spacetime is examined, relations among the W-boson mass (m_W), the Kaluza-Klein mass scale (M_{KK}), and the Higgs boson mass (m_H) being derived. It is shown that M_{KK}/m_W = (2 pi kR)^{1/2} (pi/theta_W) and m_H /m_W = 0.058 kR (pi/theta_W), where k^2, R, and theta_W are the curvature and size of the extra-dimensional space and the Wilson line phase determined dynamically. For typical values kR = 12 and theta_W = (0.2 to 0.4) pi, one finds that M_{KK} = (1.7 to 3.5) TeV, k = (1.3 to 2.6) x 10^{19} GeV, and m_H = (140 to 280) GeV.

Spontaneous Breakdown of the Lorentz Invariance

We re-examine three-dimensional gauge theory with a Chern-Simons term in which the Lorentz invariance is spontaneously broken by dynamical generation of a magnetic field. A non-vanishing magnetic field leads, through the Nambu-Goldstone theorem, to the decrease of zero-point energies of photons, which accounts for a major part of the mechanism. The asymmetric spectral flow plays an important role. The instability in pure Chern-Simons theory is also noted.

The Energy Density in the Maxwell-Chern-Simons Theory

A two-dimensional nonrelativistic fermion system coupled to both electromagnetic gauge fields and Chern-Simons gauge fields is analysed. Polarization tensors relevant in the quantum Hall effect and anyon superconductivity are obtained as simple closed integrals and are evaluated numerically for all momenta and frequencies. The correction to the energy density is evaluated in the random phase approximation (RPA), by summing an infinite series of ring diagrams. It is found that the correction has significant dependence on the particle number density. In the context of anyon superconductivity, the energy density relative to the mean field value is minimized at a hole concentration per lattice plaquette (0.05 \sim 0.06) (p_c a/\hbar)^2 where p_c and a are the momentum cutoff and lattice constant, respectively. At the minimum the correction is about -5 % \sim -25 %, depending on the ratio (2m ω_c)/(p_c^2) where ω_c is the frequency cutoff. In the Jain-Fradkin-Lopez picture of the fractional quantum Hall effect the RPA correction to the energy density is very large. It diverges logarithmically as the cutoff is removed, implying that corrections beyond RPA become important at large momentum and frequency.

Neutral and Charged Anyon Fluids

(Review) Properties of neutral and charged anyon fluids are examined, with the main focus on the question whether or not a charged anyon fluid exhibits a superconductivity at zero and finite temperature. Quantum mechanics of anyon fluids is precisely described by Chern-Simons gauge theory. The random phase approximation (RPA), the linearized self-consistent field method (SCF), and the hydrodynamic approach employed in the early analysis of anyon fluids are all equivalent. Relations and differences between neutral and charged anyon fluids are discussed. It is necessary to go beyond RPA and the linearized SCF, and possively beyond the Hartree-Fock approximation, to correctly describe various phenomena such as the flux quantization, vortex formation, and phase transition. Topics includes: Anyons, Aharonov-Bohm effect, Chern-Simons gauge theory, Hartree-Fock ground state, RPA and SCF, Path integral representation, RPA = linearized SCF, Response functions, Phonons and plasmons, Hydrodynamic description, Effective theory, Meissner effect at zero and finite temperature, de Haas - van Alphen effect in SCF, Thermodynamic potential in inhomogeneous fields, T_c, Other important issues.
