Bragg-Cherenkov resonance and polaron-like decoupling of the Wigner solid on superfluid helium

Nonlinear polaron-like dynamics of the two-dimensional Wigner solid (WS) on superfluid $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ are theoretically analyzed in different models and transport regimes for their similarities and distinctions. The Bragg-Cherenkov (BC) resonant excitation of surface waves and WS decoupling from surface dimples were usually considered in terms of a dc transport model. At the same time, field-velocity characteristics of the WS are measured under ac conditions and presented for time-averaged quantities. Here the nonlinear equation of motion of the WS coupled to surface dimples is studied for ac conditions using two different approaches based on fixing the driving field or the output current. Both approaches are shown to give similar results for the first harmonics of major transport properties. In the ac theory, the BC-resonances for dimple inertia and the momentum relaxation rate have asymmetrical shapes, which is in contrast with the results of dc models. Even a quite low driving frequency is shown to affect the amplitude of the BC resonance and decoupling of the WS. Above the BC threshold, the effective mass of surface dimples as a function of the velocity amplitude strongly oscillates indicating multiple recoupling processes.

Magneto-oscillations and anomalous current states in a photo-excited electron gas on liquid helium

The paper reviews a novel class of phenomena observed recently in the two-dimensional (2D) electron system formed on the free surface of liquid helium in the presence of a magnetic field directed normally and exposed to microwave radiation. The distinctive feature of these nonequilibrium phenomena is magnetoconductivity oscillations induced by inter-subband (out-of-plane) and intra-subband (in-plane) microwave excitations. The conductivity magneto-oscillations induced by intra-subband excitation are similar to remarkable microwave-induced resistance oscillations (MIRO) reported for semiconductor heterostructures. Investigations of microwave-induced conductivity oscillations (MICO) on liquid helium helped with understanding of the origin of MIRO. Much stronger microwave-induced conductivity oscillations were observed and well described theoretically for resonant inter-subband microwave excitation. At strong powers, such excitation leads to zero-resistance states (ZRS), the in-plane redistribution of electrons, self-generated audio-frequency oscillations, and incompressible states. These phenomena are caused by unusual current states of the 2D electron system formed under resonant microwave excitation.

Magnetoconductivity oscillations induced by intersubband excitation in a degenerate 2D electron gas

Magnetoconductivity oscillations and absolute negative conductivity induced by nonequilibrium populations of excited subbands in a degenerate multisubband two-dimensional electron system are studied theoretically. The displacement from equilibrium, which can be caused by resonant microwave excitation or by any other reason, is assumed to be such that electron distributions can no longer be described by a single Fermi level. In this case, in addition to the well-known conductivity peaks occurring at the Shubnikov-de Haas conditions and small peaks of normal intersubband scattering, sign-changing oscillations with a different shape are shown to be possible. We found also that even a small fraction of electrons transferred to the excited subband can lead to negative conductivity effects.

Density domains of a photo-excited electron gas on liquid helium

The Coulombic effect on the stability range of the photo-excited electron gas on liquid helium is shown to favor formation of domains of different densities. Domains appear to eliminate or greatly reduce regions with negative conductivity. An analysis of the density domain structure allows explaining remarkable observations reported recently for the photo-excited electron gas.

Nonlinear Wigner solid transport over superfluid helium under AC conditions

Nonlinear transport properties of the two-dimensional Wigner solid of surface electrons on superfluid helium are studied for alternating current conditions. For time-averaged quantities like Fourier coefficients, the field-velocity characteristics are shown to be qualitatively different as compared to that found in the DC theory. For a spatially uniform current we found a general solution for the field-velocity relationship which appears to be strongly dependent on the current frequency. If the current frequency is much lower than the ripplon damping parameter, the Bragg-Cherenkov resonances which appear at high enough drift velocities acquire a distinctive saw-tooth shape with long right-side tails independent of small damping. For current frequencies which are close or higher than the ripplon damping coefficient, the interference of ripplons excited at different time intervals results in a new oscillatory (in drift velocity) regime of Bragg-Cherenkov scattering.

Resonant Correlation-Induced Optical Bistability in an Electron System on Liquid Helium

We show that electrons on liquid helium display intrinsic bistability of resonant inter-subband absorption. The bistability occurs for comparatively weak microwave power. The underlying giant nonlinearity of the many-electron response results from the interplay of the strong short-range electron correlations, the long relaxation time, and the multi-subband character of the electron energy spectrum.

Microwave-Absorption-Induced Heating of Surface State Electrons on Liquid 3He

A resonance-induced change in the resistivity of the surface state electrons (SSE) exposed to the microwave (MW) radiation is observed. The MW frequency corresponds to the transition energy between two lowest Rydberg energy levels. All measurements are done with electrons over liquid 3He in a temperature range 0.45-0.65 K, in which the electron relaxation time and the MW absorption linewidth are determined by collisions with helium vapor atoms. The input MW power is varied by two orders of magnitude, and the resistivity is always found to increase. This effect is attributed to the heating of electrons with the resonance MW radiation. The temperature and the momentum relaxation rate of the hot electrons are calculated as a function of the MW power in the cell, and the Rabi frequency is determined from the comparison of the theoretical result with the experiment. In addition, the broadening of the absorption signal caused by the heating is studied experimentally, and the results are found to be in good agreement with our calculations.
