Bounded functional calculi for unbounded operators

This article summarises the theory of several bounded functional calculi for unbounded operators that have recently been discovered. The extend the Hille--Phillips calculus for (negative) generators AA of certain bounded C0C_0-semigroups, in particular for bounded semigroups on Hilbert spaces and bounded holomorphic semigroups on Banach spaces. They include functions outside the Hille-Phillips class, and they generally give sharper bounds for the norms of the resulting operators f(A)f(A). The calculi are mostly based on appropriate reproducing formulas for the relevant classes of functions, and they rely on significant and interesting developments of function theory. They are compatible with standard functional calculi and they admit appropriate convergence lemmas and spectral mapping theorems. They can also be used to derive several well-known operator norm-estimates, provide generalisations of some of them, and extend the general theory of operator semigroups. Our aim is to help readers to make use of these calculi without having to understand the details of their construction.

In search of convexity: diagonals and numerical ranges

We show that the set of all possible constant diagonals of a bounded Hilbert space operator is always convex. This, in particular, answers an open question of J.-C. Bourin (20032003). Moreover, we show that the joint numerical range of a commuting operator tuple is in general not convex, which fills a gap in the literature. We also prove that the Asplund-Ptak numerical range (which is convex for pairs of operators) is, in general, not convex for tuples of operators.

Fine scales of decay of operator semigroups

Motivated by potential applications to partial differential equations, we develop a theory of fine scales of decay rates for operator semigroups. The theory contains, unifies, and extends several notable results in the literature on decay of operator semigroups and yields a number of new ones. Its core is a new operator-theoretical method of deriving rates of decay combining ingredients from functional calculus, and complex, real and harmonic analysis. It also leads to several results of independent interest.

L^p-tauberian theorems and L^p-rates for energy decay

We prove LpL^p-analogues of the classical tauberian theorem of Ingham and Karamata, and its variations giving rates of decay. These results are applied to derive LpL^p-decay of operator families arising in the study of the decay of energy for damped wave equations and local energy for wave equations in exterior domains. By constructing some examples of critical behaviour we show that the LpL^p-rates of decay obtained in this way are best possible under our assumptions.

On discrete subordination of power bounded and Ritt operators

By means of a new technique, we develop further a discrete subordination approach to the functional calculus of power bounded and Ritt operators initiated by N. Dungey in [19]. This allows us to show, in particular, that (infinite) convex combinations of powers of Ritt operators are Ritt. Moreover, we provide a unified framework for several main results on discrete subordination from [19] and answer a question left open in [19]. The paper can be considered as a complement to [26] for the discrete setting.

Resolvent representations for functions of sectorial operators

We obtain integral representations for the resolvent of ψ(A)ψ(A), where ψψ is a holomorphic function mapping the right half-plane and the right half-axis into themselves, and AA is a sectorial operator on a Banach space. As a corollary, for a wide class of functions ψψ, we show that the operator −ψ(A)-ψ(A) generates a sectorially bounded holomorphic C0C_0-semigroup on a Banach space whenever −A-A does, and the sectorial angle of AA is preserved. When ψψ is a Bernstein function, this was recently proved by Gomilko and Tomilov, but the proof here is more direct. Moreover, we prove that such a permanence property for AA can be described, at least on Hilbert spaces, in terms of the existence of a bounded H∞H^{\infty}-calculus for AA. As byproducts of our approach, we also obtain new results on functions mapping generators of bounded semigroups into generators of holomorphic semigroups and on subordination for Ritt operators.

The index formula and the spectral shift function for relatively trace class perturbations

We compute the Fredholm index, ind(DA){\rm ind}(D_A), of the operator DA=(d/dt)+AD_A = (d/dt) + A on L2(R;H)L^2(\mathbb{R};\mathcal{H}) associated with the operator path {A(t)}t=−∞∞\{A(t)\}_{t=-\infty}^{\infty}, where (Af)(t)=A(t)f(t)(A f)(t) = A(t) f(t) for a.e. t∈Rt\in\mathbb{R}, and appropriate f∈L2(R;H)f \in L^2(\mathbb{R};\mathcal{H}), via the spectral shift function ξ( ⋅ ;A+,A−)ξ(\, \cdot \,;A_+,A_-) associated with the pair (A+,A−)(A_+, A_-) of asymptotic operators A±=A(±∞)A_{\pm}=A(\pm\infty) on the separable complex Hilbert space H\mathcal{H} in the case when A(t)A(t) is generally an unbounded (relatively trace class) perturbation of the unbounded self-adjoint operator A−A_-. We derive a formula (an extension of a formula due to Pushnitski) relating the spectral shift function ξ( ⋅ ;A+,A−)ξ(\, \cdot \,;A_+,A_-) for the pair (A+,A−)(A_+, A_-), and the corresponding spectral shift function ξ( ⋅ ;H2,H1)ξ(\, \cdot \,;H_2,H_1) for the pair of operators (H2,H1)=(DADA∗,DA∗DA)(H_2,H_1)=(D_A {D_A}^*, {D_A}^* D_A) in this relative trace class context. This formula is then used to identify the Fredholm index of DAD_A with ξ(0;A+,A−)ξ(0;A_+,A_-). In addition, we prove that ind(DA){\rm ind}(D_A) coincides with the spectral flow SpFlow({A(t)}t=−∞∞)(\{A(t)\}_{t=-\infty}^\infty) of the family {A(t)}t∈R\{A(t)\}_{t\in\mathbb{R}} and also relate it to the (Fredholm) perturbation determinant for the pair (A+,A−)(A_+, A_-). We also provide some applications in the context of supersymmetric quantum mechanics to zeta function and heat kernel regularized spectral asymmetries and the eta-invariant.

A Jost-Pais-type reduction of Fredholm determinants and some applications

We study the analog of semi-separable integral kernels in $\cH$ of the type {equation*} K(x,x')={cases} F_1(x)G_1(x'), & a<x'< x< b, \\ F_2(x)G_2(x'), & a<x<x'<b, {cases} {equation*} where −∞≤a<b≤∞-\infty\leq a<b\leq \infty, and for a.e.\ x∈(a,b)x \in (a,b), $F_j (x) \in \cB_2(\cH_j,\cH)$ and $G_j(x) \in \cB_2(\cH,\cH_j)$ such that Fj(⋅)F_j(\cdot) and Gj(⋅)G_j(\cdot) are uniformly measurable, and {equation*} \|F_j(\cdot)\|_{\cB_2(\cH_j,\cH)} \in L^2((a,b)), \; \|G_j (\cdot)\|_{\cB_2(\cH,\cH_j)} \in L^2((a,b)), \quad j=1,2, {equation*} with $\cH$ and $\cH_j$, j=1,2j=1,2, complex, separable Hilbert spaces. Assuming that K(⋅,⋅)K(\cdot, \cdot) generates a trace class operator $\bsK$ in $L^2((a,b);\cH)$, we derive the analog of the Jost-Pais reduction theory that succeeds in proving that the Fredholm determinant ${\det}_{L^2((a,b);\cH)}(\bsI - α\bsK)$, $α\in \bbC$, naturally reduces to appropriate Fredholm determinants in the Hilbert spaces $\cH$ (and $\cH_1 \oplus \cH_2$). Explicit applications of this reduction theory are made to Schrödinger operators with suitable bounded operator-valued potentials. In addition, we provide an alternative approach to a fundamental trace formula first established by Pushnitski which leads to a Fredholm index computation of a certain model operator.

Generation of subordinated holomorphic semigroups via Yosida's theorem

Using functional calculi theory, we obtain several estimates for ∥ψ(A)g(A)∥\|ψ(A)g(A)\|, where ψψ is a Bernstein function, gg is a bounded completely monotone function and −A-A is the generator of a holomorphic C0C_0-semigroup on a Banach space, bounded on [0,∞)[0,\infty). Such estimates are of value, in particular, in approximation theory of operator semigroups. As a corollary, we obtain a new proof of the fact that −ψ(A)-ψ(A) generates a holomorphic semigroup whenever −A-A does, established recently in [8] by a different approach.

On subordination of holomorphic semigroups

We prove that for any Bernstein function ψψ the operator −ψ(A)-ψ(A) generates a holomorphic C0C_0-semigroup (e−tψ(A))t≥0(e^{-tψ(A)})_{t \ge 0} on a Banach space, whenever −A-A does. This answers a question posed by Kishimoto and Robinson. Moreover, giving a positive answer to a question by Berg, Boyadzhiev and de Laubenfels, we show that (e−tψ(A))t≥0(e^{-tψ(A)})_{t \ge 0} is holomorphic in the holomorphy sector of (e−tA)t≥0,(e^{-tA})_{t \ge 0}, and if (e−tA)t≥0(e^{-tA})_{t \ge 0} is sectorially bounded in this sector then (e−tψ(A))t≥0(e^{-tψ(A)})_{t \ge 0} has the same property. We also obtain new sufficient conditions on ψψ in order that, for every Banach space XX, the semigroup (e−tψ(A))t≥0(e^{-tψ(A)})_{t\ge 0} on XX is holomorphic whenever (e−tA)t≥0(e^{-tA})_{t\ge 0} is a bounded C0C_0-semigroup on XX. These conditions improve and generalize well-known results by Carasso-Kato and Fujita.

On the Witten index in terms of spectral shift functions

We study the model operator DA=(d/dt)+A\mathbf{D}_{\mathbf{A}} = (d/dt) + \mathbf{A} in L2(R;H)L^2(\mathbb{R};\mathcal{H}) associated with the operator path {A(t)}t=−∞∞\{A(t)\}_{t=-\infty}^{\infty}, where (Af)(t)=A(t)f(t)(\mathbf{A} f)(t) = A(t) f(t) for a.e.\ t∈Rt\in\mathbb{R}, and appropriate f∈L2(R;H)f \in L^2(\mathbb{R};\mathcal{H}) (with H\mathcal{H} a separable, complex Hilbert space). Denoting by A±A_{\pm} the norm resolvent limits of A(t)A(t) as t→±∞t \to \pm \infty, our setup permits A(t)A(t) in H\mathcal{H} to be an unbounded, relatively trace class perturbation of the unbounded self-adjoint operator A−A_-, and no discrete spectrum assumptions are made on A±A_{\pm}. We introduce resolvent and semigroup regularized Witten indices of DA\mathbf{D}_{\mathbf{A}}, denoted by WrW_r and WsW_s, and prove that these regularized indices coincide with the Fredholm index of DA\mathbf{D}_{\mathbf{A}} whenever the latter is Fredholm. In situations where DA\mathbf{D}_{\mathbf{A}} ceases to be a Fredholm operator in L2(R;H)L^2(\mathbb{R};\mathcal{H}) we compute its resolvent (resp., semigroup) regularized Witten index in terms of the spectral shift function ξ( ⋅ ;A+,A−)ξ(\,\cdot\,;A_+,A_-) associated with the pair (A+,A−)(A_+, A_-) as follows: Assuming 00 to be a right and a left Lebesgue point of ξ( ⋅  ;A+,A−)ξ(\,\cdot\,\, ; A_+, A_-), denoted by ξL(0+;A+,A−)ξ_L(0_+; A_+,A_-) and ξL(0−;A+,A−)ξ_L(0_-; A_+, A_-), we prove that 00 is also a right Lebesgue point of ξ( ⋅  ;H2,H1)ξ(\,\cdot\,\, ; \mathbf{H_2}, \mathbf{H_1}), denoted by ξL(0+;H2,H1)ξ_L(0_+; \mathbf{H_2}, \mathbf{H_1}), and that \begin{align*} W_r(\mathbf{D}_{\mathbf{A}}) &= W_s(\mathbf{D}_{\mathbf{A}}) \\ & = ξ_L(0_+; \mathbf{H_2}, \mathbf{H_1}) \\ & = [ξ_L(0_+; A_+,A_-) + ξ_L(0_-; A_+, A_-)]/2, \end{align*} the principal result of this paper. In the special case where dim⁡(H)<∞\dim(\mathcal{H}) < \infty, we prove that the Witten indices of DA\mathbf{D}_{\mathbf{A}} are either integer, or half-integer-valued.

Product formulas in functional calculi for sectorial operators

We study the product formula (fg)(A)=f(A)g(A)(fg)(A) = f(A)g(A) in the framework of (unbounded) functional calculus of sectorial operators AA. We give an abstract result, and, as corollaries, we obtain new product formulas for the holomorphic functional calculus, an extended Stieltjes functional calculus and an extended Hille-Phillips functional calculus. Our results generalise previous work of Hirsch, Martinez and Sanz, and Schilling.

Some Operator Bounds Employing Complex Interpolation Revisited

We revisit and extend known bounds on operator-valued functions of the type $$ T_1^{-z} S T_2^{-1+z}, \quad z \in \ol Σ= \{z\in\bbC\,|\, \Re(z) \in [0,1]\}, $$ under various hypotheses on the linear operators SS and TjT_j, j=1,2j=1,2. We particularly single out the case of self-adjoint and sectorial operators TjT_j in some separable complex Hilbert space $\cH_j$, j=1,2j=1,2, and suppose that SS (resp., S∗S^*) is a densely defined closed operator mapping $\dom(S) \subseteq \cH_1$ into $\cH_2$ (resp., $\dom(S^*) \subseteq \cH_2$ into $\cH_1$), relatively bounded with respect to T1T_1 (resp., T2∗T_2^*). Using complex interpolation methods, a generalized polar decomposition for SS, and Heinz's inequality, the bounds we establish lead to inequalities of the following type, \begin{align*} & \big\|\ol{T_2^{-x}ST_1^{-1+x}}\big\|_{\cB(\cH_1,\cH_2)} \leq N_1 N_2 e^{(θ_1 + θ_2) [x(1-x)]^{1/2}} \\ & \quad \times \big\|ST_1^{-1}\big\|_{\cB(\cH_1,\cH_2)}^{1-x} \, \big\|S^*(T_2^*)^{-1}\big\|_{\cB(\cH_2,\cH_1)}^{x}, \quad x \in [0,1], \end{align*} assuming that TjT_j have bounded imaginary powers, that is, for some Nj≥1N_j\ge 1 and θj≥0,θ_j \ge 0, $$ \big\|T_j^{is}\big\|_{\cB(\cH)} \leq N_j e^{θ_j |s|}, \quad s \in \bbR, \; j=1,2. $$ We also derive analogous bounds with $\cB(\cH_1,\cH_2)$ replaced by trace ideals, $\cB_p(\cH_1, \cH_2)$, p∈[1,∞)p \in [1,\infty). The methods employed are elementary, predominantly relying on Hadamard's three-lines theorem and Heinz's inequality.

On convergence rates in approximation theory for operator semigroups

We create a new, functional calculus, approach to approximation of C_0-semigroups on Banach spaces. As an application of this approach, we obtain optimal convergence rates in classical approximation formulas for C_0-semigroups. In fact, our methods allow one to derive a number of similar formulas and equip them with sharp convergence rates. As a byproduct, we prove a new interpolation principle leading to efficient norm estimates in the Banach algebra of Laplace transforms of bounded measures on the semi-axis.

Bernstein functions and rates in mean ergodic theorems for operator semigroups

We present a functional calculus approach to the study of rates of decay in mean ergodic theorems for bounded strongly continuous operator semigroups. A central role is played by operators of the form g(A)g(A), where −A-A is the generator of the semigroup and gg is a Bernstein function. In addition, we obtain some new results on Bernstein functions that are of independent interest.

On a Question of A. E. Nussbaum on Measurability of Families of Closed Linear Operators in a Hilbert Space

The purpose of this note is to answer a question A. E. Nussbaum formulated in 1964 about the possible equivalence between weak measurability of a family of densely defined, closed operators T(t), t real, in a separable complex Hilbert space H on one hand, and the notion of measurability of the 2 \times 2 operator-valued matrix of projections onto the graph Gamma(T(t)) of T(t) on the other, in the negative. Our results demonstrate an interesting distinction between the direct integral over the family of operators T(t) with respect to Lebesgue measure and the naturally maximally defined operator associated with pointwise application of T(t) in the vector-valued Hilbert space L^2(\mathbb R; dt; H). We also provide explicit criteria for the measurability of the matrix of projections onto the graph Gamma(T(t)) of T(t).

Power-bounded operators and related norm estimates

We consider whether L = limsup_{n to infty} n ||T^{n+1}-T^n|| < infty implies that the operator T is power bounded. We show that this is so if L<1/e, but it does not necessarily hold if L=1/e. As part of our methods, we improve a result of Esterle, showing that if sigma(T) = {1} and T != I, then liminf_{n to infty} n ||T^{n+1}-T^n|| >= 1/e. The constant 1/e is sharp. Finally we describe a way to create many generalizations of Esterle's result, and also give many conditions on an operator which imply that its norm is equal to its spectral radius.
