Energy Efficiency Maximization of Simultaneous Transmission and Reflection RIS Assisted Full-Duplex Communications

This work studies the effectiveness of a novel simultaneous transmission and reflection reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) aided Full-Duplex (FD) communication system. We aim to maximize the energy efficiency by jointly optimizing the transmit power and passive beamforming at the STAR-RIS. We propose an efficient algorithm to optimize them iteratively under the alternating optimization framework. The successive convex approximation (SCA) and Dinkelbach's method are used to solve the power optimization subproblem. The penalty-based method is used to design passive beamforming at the STAR-RIS. Numerical results verify the convergence and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, and further reveal the benifits of the combining of the STAR-RIS and FD communication compared to benchmarks.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for Energy Efficiency in Full-duplex Communication System

In this letter, we study the reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) aided full-duplex (FD) communication system. By jointly designing the active beamforming of two multi-antenna sources and passive beamforming of RIS, we aim to maximize the energy efficiency of the system, where extra self-interference cancellation power consumption in FD system is also considered. We divide the optimization problem into active and passive beamforming design subproblems, and adopt the alternative optimization framework to solve them iteratively. Dinkelbach's method is used to tackle the fractional objective function in active beamforming problem. Penalty method and successive convex approximation are exploited for passive beamforming design. Simulation results show the energy efficiency of our scheme outperforms other benchmarks.

Simultaneous Transmission and Reflection Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted Full-Duplex Communications

This work demonstrates the effectiveness of a novel simultaneous transmission and reflection reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) in Full-Duplex (FD) aided communication system. The objective is to minimize the total transmit power by jointly designing the transmit power and the transmitting and reflecting (T&R) coefficients of the STAR-RIS. To solve the nonconvex problem, an efficient algorithm is proposed by utilizing the alternating optimization framework to iteratively optimize variables. Specifically, in each iteration, we drive the closed-form expression for the optimal power design. The successive convex approximation (SCA) method and semidefinite program (SDP) are used to solve the passive beamforming optimization problem. Numerical results verify the convergence and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, and further reveal in which scenarios STAR-RIS assisted FD communication defeats the Half-Duplex and conventional RIS.

Delay Sensitive Communications over Cognitive Radio Networks

Supporting the quality of service of unlicensed users in cognitive radio networks is very challenging, mainly due to dynamic resource availability because of the licensed users' activities. In this paper, we study the optimal admission control and channel allocation decisions in cognitive overlay networks in order to support delay sensitive communications of unlicensed users. We formulate it as a Markov decision process problem, and solve it by transforming the original formulation into a stochastic shortest path problem. We then propose a simple heuristic control policy, which includes a threshold-based admission control scheme and and a largest-delay-first channel allocation scheme, and prove the optimality of the largest-delay-first channel allocation scheme. We further propose an improved policy using the rollout algorithm. By comparing the performance of both proposed policies with the upper-bound of the maximum revenue, we show that our policies achieve close-to-optimal performance with low complexities.

Sum-Rate Optimization in a Two-Way Relay Network with Buffering

A Relay Station (RS) uses a buffer to store and process the received data packets before forwarding them. Recently, the buffer has been exploited in one-way relaying to opportunistically schedule the two different links according to their channel quality. The intuition is that, if the channel to the destination is poor, then RS stores more data from the source, in order to use it when the channel to the destination is good. We apply this intuition to the case of half-duplex two-way relaying, where the interactions among the buffers and the links become more complex. We investigate the sum-rate maximization problem in the Time Division Broadcast (TDBC): the users send signals to the RS in different time slots, the RS decodes and stores messages in the buffers. For downlink transmission, the RS re-encodes and sends using the optimal broadcast strategy. The operation in each time slot is not determined in advance, but depends on the channel state information (CSI). We derive the decision function for adaptive link selection with respect to CSI using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. The thresholds of the decision function are obtained under Rayleigh fading channel conditions. The numerical results show that the sum-rate of the adaptive link selection protocol with buffering is significantly larger compared to the reference protocol with fixed transmission schedule.

Transmission Schemes for Four-Way Relaying in Wireless Cellular Systems

Two-way relaying in wireless systems has initiated a large research effort during the past few years. While one-way relay with a single data flow introduces loss in spectral efficiency due to its half-duplex operation, two-way relaying based on wireless network coding regains part of this loss by simultaneously processing the two data flows. In a broader perspective, the two-way traffic pattern is rather limited and it is of interest to investigate other traffic patterns where such a simultaneous processing of information flows can bring performance advantage. In this paper we consider a scenario beyond the usual two-way relaying: a four-way relaying, where each of the two Mobile Stations (MSs) has a two-way connection to the same Base Station (BS), while each connection is through a dedicated Relay Station (RS). While both RSs are in the range of the same BS, they are assumed to have antipodal positions within the cell, such that they do not interfere with each other. We introduce and analyze a two-phase transmission scheme to serve the four-way traffic pattern defined in this scenario. Each phase consists of combined broadcast and multiple access. We analyze the achievable rate region of the new schemes for two different operational models for the RS, Decode-and-Forward (DF) and Amplify-and-Forward (AF), respectively. We compare the performance with a state-of-the-art reference scheme, time sharing is used between the two MSs, while each MS is served through a two-way relaying scheme. The results indicate that, when the RS operates in a DF mode, the achievable rate regions are significantly enlarged. On the other hand, for AF relaying, the gains are rather modest. The practical implication of the presented work is a novel insight on how to improve the spatial reuse in wireless cellular networks by coordinating the transmissions of the antipodal relays.

Distributed and Optimal Reduced Primal-Dual Algorithm for Uplink OFDM Resource Allocation

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is the key component of many emerging broadband wireless access standards. The resource allocation in OFDM uplink, however, is challenging due to heterogeneity of users' Quality of Service requirements, channel conditions, and individual resource constraints. We formulate the resource allocation problem as a non-strictly convex optimization problem, which typically has multiple global optimal solutions. We then propose a reduced primal-dual algorithm, which is distributed, low in computational complexity, and probably globally convergent to a global optimal solution. The performance of the algorithm is studied through a realistic OFDM simulator. Compared with the previously proposed centralized optimal algorithm, our algorithm not only significantly reduces the message overhead but also requires less iterations to converge.
