Critical phenomena in dynamical scalarization of charged black hole

We report a new black hole scalarization mechanism and disclose novel dynamical critical phenomena in the process of the nonlinear accretion of the scalar field into black holes. The accretion process can transform a seed black hole into a final scalarized or bald black hole, depending on the initial parameter of the scalar field $p$. There is a critical parameter $p_{\ast}$ and near it all intermediate solutions are attracted to a critical solution and stay there for a time scaling as $T\propto-γ\ln|p-p_{\ast}|$. At late times, the solutions evolve into scalarized black holes if $p>p_{\ast}$, or bald black holes if $p<p_{\ast}$. The final masses of the resulting scalarized/bald black holes satisfy power-laws $M_{p}-M_{\pm}\propto|p-p_{\ast}|^{γ_{\pm}}$ where $M_{\pm}$ are the masses of the scalarized/bald black holes when $p\to p_\ast$ from above/below, and $γ_{\pm}$ the corresponding exponents.

Detection of scalar fields by Extreme Mass Ratio Inspirals with a Kerr black hole

We study extreme mass ratio inspirals occurring in modified gravity, for which the system is modeled by a small compact object with scalar charge spiraling into a supermassive Kerr black hole. Besides the tensorial gravitational waves arising from the metric perturbations, radiations are also induced by the scalar field. The relevant metric and scalar perturbations are triggered by the orbital motion of the small object, which give rise to a system of inhomogeneous differential equations under the adiabatic approximation. Such a system of equations is then solved numerically using Green's function furnished by the solutions of the corresponding homogeneous equations. To explore the present scenario from an observational perspective, we investigate how the pertinent observables are dependent on specific spacetime configurations. In this regard, the energy fluxes and the gravitational wave dephasing accumulated during the process are evaluated, as functions of the scalar charge, mass ratio, and spin of the central supermassive black hole. In particular, the presence of additional scalar emission leads to a more significant rate of overall energy loss, which, in turn, decreases the total number of orbital cycles before the small object plunges into the central black hole. Moreover, for a central black hole with a higher spin, the imprints of the scalar charge on the resultant gravitational radiations are found to be more significant, which indicates the possibility of detecting the scalar charge.

Shadows of magnetically charged rotating black holes surrounded by quintessence

In this work, we study the optical properties of a class of magnetically charged rotating black hole spacetimes. The black holes in question are assumed to be immersed in the quintessence field, and subsequently, the resulting black hole shadows are expected to be modified by the presence of the dark energy. We investigate the photon region and the black hole shadow, and in particular, their dependence on the relevant physical conditions such as the state parameter of the quintessence, the angular momentum, and the magnitude of the magnetic charge. It is shown that the photon regions sensitively depend on the horizon structure and possess intricate features. Moreover, from the viewpoint of a static observer, we explore a few observables, especially those associated with the distortion of the observed black hole shadows.

Dynamical scalarization in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory

We study the process of fully nonlinear dynamical scalarization starting from a charged black hole or a naked singularity in asymptotically flat spacetime in the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. Initially the dilaton field is negligible compared to the gravitational and the Maxwell field. Then the dilaton field experiences an immediate growth, later it oscillates with damping amplitude and finally settles down to a finite value. For a hairy black hole develops from an original Reissner-Nordström black hole, since the dilaton oscillation and decay are almost independent of the coupling parameter, unlike the Anti-de Sitter spacetime it is not easy to distinguish the resulting hairy black hole from the original asymptotically flat charged hole. For a hairy black hole evolves from an original naked singularity, the resulting hairy black hole has rich structures. In the scalarization process, the naked singularity is soon enveloped by one outer horizon, then another horizon is developed and in the end a stable hairy black hole forms and two horizons degenerate into one to protect the singularity. The hairy black hole mass saturates exponentially in the scalarization.

Evolution of Anti-de Sitter black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory

We study the nonlinear evolution of the spherical symmetric black holes under a small neutral scalar field perturbation in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with coupling function $f(ϕ)=e^{-bϕ}$ in asymptotic anti-de Sitter spacetime. The non-minimal coupling between scalar and Maxwell fields allows the transmission of the energy from the Maxwell field to the scalar field, but also behaves as a repulsive force for the scalar. The scalar field oscillates with damping amplitude and converges to a final value by a power law. The irreducible mass of the black hole increases abruptly at initial times and then saturates to the final value exponentially. The saturating rate is twice the decaying rate of the dominant mode of the scalar. The effects of the black hole charge, the cosmological constant and the coupling parameter on the evolution are studied in detail. When the initial configuration is a naked singularity spacetime with a large charge to mass ratio, a horizon will form soon and hide the singularity.

Echoes from phantom wormholes

We study the time evolution of the test scalar and electromagnetic fields perturbations in configurations of phantom wormholes surrounded by dark energy with state parameter $ω< -1$. We observe obvious signals of echoes reflecting wormholes properties and disclose the physical reasons behind such phenomena. In particular, we find that the dark energy equation of state has a clear imprint in echoes in wave perturbations. When $ω$ approaches the phantom divide $ω=-1$ from below, the delay time of echoes becomes longer. The echo of gravitational wave is likely to be detected in the near future, the signature of the dark energy equation of state in the echo spectrum can serve as a local measurement of the dark energy.

Non-equilibrium condensation process in holographic superconductor with nonlinear electrodynamics

We study the non-equilibrium condensation process in a holographic superconductor with nonlinear corrections to the U(1) gauge field. We start with an asymptotic Anti-de-Sitter(AdS) black hole against a complex scalar perturbation at the initial time, and solve the dynamics of the gravitational systems in the bulk. When the black hole temperature T is smaller than a critical value Tc, the scalar perturbation grows exponentially till saturation, the final state of spacetime approaches to a hairy black hole. In the bulk theory, we find the clue of the influence of nonlinear corrections in the gauge field on the process of the scalar field condensation. We show that the bulk dynamics in the non-equilibrium process is completely consistent with the observations on the boundary order parameter. Furthermore we examine the time evolution of horizons in the bulk non-equilibrium transformation process from the bald AdS black hole to the AdS hairy hole. Both the evolution of apparent and event horizons show that the original AdS black hole configuration requires more time to finish the transformation to become a hairy black hole if there is nonlinear correction to the electromagnetic field. We generalize our non-equilibrium discussions to the holographic entanglement entropy and find that the holographic entanglement entropy can give us further understanding of the influence of the nonlinearity in the gauge field on the scalar condensation. In our analysis, we also compare the effect of different models on the corrections to the gauge field on the formation of holographic superconductor.

A general holographic metal/superconductor phase transition model

We study the scalar condensation of a general holographic superconductor model in AdS black hole background away from the probe limit. We find the model parameters together with the scalar mass and backreaction can determine the order of phase transitions completely. In addition, we observe two types of discontinuities of the scalar operator in the case of first order phase transitions. We analyze in detail the effects of the scalar mass and backreaction on the formation of discontinuities and arrive at an approximate relation between the threshold model parameters. Furthermore, we obtain superconductor solutions corresponding to higher energy states and examine the stability of these superconductor solutions.

Single-crystalline transition metal films are ideal playing fields for the epitaxial growth of graphene and graphene-base materials. Graphene-silicon layered structures were successfully constructed on Ir(111) thin film on Si substrate with an yttria-stabilized zirconia buffer layer via intercalation approach. Such hetero-layered structures are compatible with current Si-based microelectronic technique, showing high promise for applications in future micro- and nano-electronic devices.

Critical behavior of charged Gauss-Bonnet AdS black holes in the grand canonical ensemble

We study the thermodynamics in the grand canonical ensemble of D-dimensional charged Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes in the extended phase space. We find that the usual small-large black hole phase transition, which exhibits analogy with the Van de Waals liquid-gas system holds in five-dimensional spherical charged Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes when its potential is fixed within the range $0<Φ<\frac{\sqrt{3}π}{4}$. For the other higher dimensional and topological charged Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes, there is no such phase transition. In the limiting case, Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black holes, with vanishing Gauss-Bonnet parameter, there is no critical behavior in the grand canonical ensemble. This result holds independent of the spacetime dimensions and topologies. We also examine the behavior of physical quantities in the vicinity of the critical point in the five-dimensional spherical charged Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes.

Holographic parity violating charged fluid dual to Chern-Simons modified gravity

We discuss the $(2+1)$-dimensional parity violating charged fluid on a finite cutoff surface $Σ_c$, dual to the nondynamical and dynamical Chern-Simons (CS) modified gravities. Using nonrelativistic long-wavelength expansion method, the field equations are solved up to $\mathcal{O}(ε^2)$ in the nondynamical model. It is shown that there exists nonvortical dual fluid with shear viscosity $η$ and Hall viscosity $η_A$ on the cutoff surface $Σ_c$. The ratio of shear viscosity over entropy density $η/s$ of the fluid takes the universal value $1/{4π}$, while the ratio of Hall viscosity over entropy density $η_A/s$ depends on the $Σ_c$ and black brane charge $q$. Moreover the nonvortical dual fluid obeys the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equation. However, these kinematic viscosities $ν$ and $ν_A$ related to $η$ and $η_A$ do not appear in this MHD equation, due to the constraint condition $\tilde{\partial}^2β_j=0$ for the $(2+1)$-dimensional dual fluid. Then, we extend our discussion to the dynamical CS modified gravity and show that the dual vortical fluid possesses another so-called Curl viscosity $ζ_A$, whose ratio to entropy density $ζ_A/s$ also depends on the $Σ_c$ and $q$. Moreover, the value of $η/s$ still equals to $1/4π$ and the result of $η_A/s$ agrees to the previous result under the probe limit of the pseudo scalar field at the infinite boundary in the charged black brane background for the dynamical CS modified gravity. This vortical dual fluid corresponds to the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence equation in plasma physics.

Signature of the Van der Waals like small-large charged AdS black hole phase transition in quasinormal modes

We calculate the quasinormal modes of massless scalar perturbations around small and large four-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom-Anti de Sitter (RN-AdS) black holes. We find a dramatic change in the slopes of quasinormal frequencies in small and large black holes near the critical point where the Van der Waals like thermodynamic phase transition happens. This further supports that the quasinormal mode can be a dynamic probe of the thermodynamic phase transition.

Thermodynamics of rotating black holes with scalar hair in three dimensions

Introducing a new form of scalar potential $V(ϕ)$, we derive a proper form of the rotating black hole solution in three-dimensional Einstein gravity with nonminimally coupled scalar field and find that the first law of thermodynamics of this new rotating hairy black hole can be protected, where the scalar field parameter $B$ is constrained to relate to the black hole size. We also disclose the Hawking-Page phase transition between this rotating hairy black holes and the pure thermal radiation. Moreover, we study phase transitions between this rotating hairy black hole and rotating BTZ black hole. Considering the matchings for the temperature and angular momentum, we find that the rotating BTZ black hole always has smaller free energy which is a thermodynamically more preferred phase. Additionally, we evaluate the thermodynamics of the rotating black hole with minimally coupled scalar hair in three dimensions, which exhibits that the thermodynamical behaviors of this rotating hairy black hole are very similar to those of the rotating black hole with nonminimally coupled scalar hair.

Hierarchy of Graphene Wrinkles Induced by Thermal Strain Engineering

Graphene is only one atom thick and becomes the ultimate thin film to explore membrane physics and mechanics. Here we study hierarchy of graphene wrinkles induced by thermal strain engineering and demonstrate that the wrinkling hierarchy can be accounted for by the wrinklon theory. We derive an equation λ = (ky)0.5 explaining evolution of wrinkling wavelength λ with the distance to the edge y observed in our experiment by considering both bending energy and stretching energy of the graphene flakes. The prefactor k in the equation is determined to be about 55 nm, which is independent of the size of the graphene flakes. Our experimental result indicates that the classical membrane behavior of graphene persists down to about 100 nm of the wrinkling wavelength.

Gauss-Bonnet holographic superconductors in Born-Infeld electrodynamics with backreactions

We develop a general holographic superconductor away from the probe limit by considering the corrections both in the gravity and in the gauge matter fields. We find the consistent effects of the high curvature correction in the gravity, the nonlinear correction in the gauge matter field and the backreaction on the dynamics of bulk AdS background and boundary CFT. They all have the effect to protect the stability of the bulk spacetime and hinder the formation of the scalar hair condensation on the boundary.

Observing various phase transitions in the holographic model of superfluidity

We study the gravity duals of supercurrent solutions in the AdS black hole background with general phase structure to describe both the first and the second order phase transitions at finite temperature in strongly interacting systems. We argue that the conductivity and the pair susceptibility can be possible phenomenological indications to distinguish the order of phase transitions. We extend our discussion to the AdS soliton configuration. Different from the black hole spacetime, in the probe limit the first order phase transition cannot be brought by introducing the spatial component of the vector potential of the gauge field in the AdS soliton background.

Phase transition in the holographic model of superfluidity with backreactions

In the fully back reacted geometry we develop a supercurrent solution which corresponds to a deformation of superconducting black holes by the spatial component of gauge fields with a non- trivial radial dependence. We investigate the influence of the backreaction on the condensation and the phase structure in the AdS black hole spacetime. Different from that observed in the probe limit, we find that two operators cannot give consistent information on the phase diagram. We argue that only one of these two operators can reflect the real property of the condensation and phase structure in the holographic superconductor. We also generalize our study to the associated phase diagram in the AdS soliton background.

Holographic superconductor developed in BTZ black hole background with backreactions

We develop a holographic superconductor in BTZ black hole background with backreactions. We investigate the influence of the backreaction on the condensation of the scalar hair and the dynamics of perturbation in the background spacetime. When the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound is approached, we argue that only one of two possible operators can reflect the real property of the condensation in the holographic superconductor. This argument is supported by the investigation in dynamics.

Perturbations around the AdS Born-Infeld black holes

We study the quasinormal mode of the perturbation of the scalar field interacting with the electromagnetic field in the backgrounds of Schwarzschild AdS black hole, the Reissner-Nordstrom AdS black hole and the Born-Infeld AdS black hole. We disclose influence by the electric charge $Q$, the coupling between the scalar and electromagnetic field $q$ and the Born-Infeld parameter $b$ on the quasinormal frequencies of the scalar perturbation. We observe the possible growing mode in the perturbation when the scalar field strongly couples to the electromagnetic field. When the electromagnetic field becomes nonlinear described by the Born-Infeld electrodynamics, the nonlinearity described by the Born-Infeld parameter can hinder the growing mode to appear in the scalar perturbation. The quasinormal mode of the scalar field perturbation can help us further understand the physics in the holographic superconductor.

Dynamical perturbations and critical phenomena in Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes

We investigate the perturbations of charged scalar field in $5$-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole backgrounds. From the perturbation behaviors we obtain the objective picture on how the high curvature influence the spacetime perturbation and the condensation of the scalar hair. The high curvature effects can also be read from the linear response function such as the susceptibility and the correlation length, when the system approaches the critical point. We find that the Gauss-Bonnet term does not affect the critical exponents of the system and they still take the mean-field values.
