The effective complex heavy-quark potential in an anisotropic quark-gluon plasma

We introduce a method for reducing anisotropic heavy-quark potentials to isotropic potentials by using an effective screening mass that depends on the quantum numbers $l$ and $m$ of a given state. We demonstrate that, using the resulting 1D effective potential model, one can solve a 1D Schrödinger equation and reproduce the full 3D results for the energies and binding energies of low-lying heavy-quarkonium bound states to relatively high accuracy. This includes the splitting of different p-wave polarizations. The resulting 1D effective model provides a way to include momentum anisotropy effects in open quantum system simulations of heavy-quarkonium dynamics in the quark-gluon plasma.

Matrix Models for Deconfinement and Their Perturbative Corrections

Matrix models for the deconfining phase transition in $SU(N)$ gauge theories have been developed in recent years. With a few parameters, these models are able to reproduce the lattice results of the thermodynamic quantities in the semi-quark gluon plasma(QGP) region. They are also used to compute the behavior of the 't Hooft loop and study the exceptional group $G(2)$. In this paper, we review the basic ideas of the construction of these models and propose a new form of the non-ideal corrections in the matrix model. In the semi-QGP region, our new model is in good agreement with the lattice simulations as the previous ones, while in higher temperature region, it reproduces the upward trend of the rescaled trace anomaly as found in lattice which, however, can not be obtained from the previous models. In addition, we discuss the perturbative corrections to the thermal effective potential which could be used to systematically improve the matrix models at high temperatures. In particular, we provide, for the first time, an analytical proof of the relation between the one- and two-loop effective potential: two-loop correction is proportional to the one-loop result, independent of the eigenvalues of the Polyakov loop. This is a very general result, we prove it for all classic groups, including $SU(N)$, $SO(2N+1)$, $SO(2N)$ and $Sp(2N)$.

Two-loop perturbative corrections to the thermal effective potential in gluodynamics

The thermodynamics of pure glue theories can be described in terms of an effective action for the Polyakov loop. This effective action is of the Landau-Ginzburg type and its variables are the angles parametrizing the loop. In this paper we compute perturbative corrections to this action. Remarkably, two-loop corrections turn out to be proportional to the one-loop action, independent of the eigenvalues of the loop. By a straightforward generalization of the 't Hooft coupling this surprisingly simple result holds for any of the classical and exceptional groups.

A new method to calculate the n-Particle Irreducible Effective Action

In this paper, we present a new method to calculate the n-Loop n-particle irreducible effective action. The key is an organizational trick that involves the introduction of a set of fictitious bare vertices that are set to zero at the end of the calculation. Using these fictitious vertices, we prove that the Schwinger-Dyson equations are the same as the equations of motion obtained from the n-particle irreducible effective action, up to the level at which they respect the symmetries of the original theory. This result allows us to obtain the effective action directly from the Schwinger-Dyson equations, which are comparatively easy to calculate. As a check of our method, we reproduce the known results for the n-Loop n-particle irreducible effective action with n = 4 and n = 5. We also use the technique to calculate the 6-Loop 6-particle irreducible effective action.

Effective matrix model for deconfinement in pure gauge theories

We construct matrix models for the deconfining phase transition in SU(N) gauge theories, without dynamical quarks, at a nonzero temperature T. We generalize models with zero and one free parameter to study a model with two free parameters: besides perturbative terms ~T^4, we introduce terms ~T^2 and ~T^0. The two N-dependent parameters are determined by fitting to data from numerical simulations on the lattice for the pressure, including the latent heat. Good agreement is found for the pressure in the semi-quark gluon plasma (QGP), which is the region from Tc, the critical temperature, to about ~4 Tc. Above ~1.2 Tc, the pressure is a sum of a perturbative term, ~ +T^4, and a simple non-perturbative term, essentially just a constant times ~ -Tc^2 T^2. For the pressure, the details of the matrix model only enter within a very narrow window, from Tc to ~1.2 Tc, whose width does not change significantly with N. Without further adjustment, the model also agrees well with lattice data for the 't Hooft loop. This is notable, because in contrast to the pressure, the 't Hooft loop is sensitive to the details of the matrix model over the entire semi-QGP. For the (renormalized) Polyakov loop, though, our results disagree sharply with those from the lattice. Matrix models provide a natural and generic explanation for why the deconfining phase transition in SU(N) gauge theories is of first order not just for three, but also for four or more colors. Lastly, we consider gauge theories where there is no strict order parameter for deconfinement, such as for a G(2) gauge group. To agree with lattice measurements, in the G(2) matrix model it is essential to add terms which generate complete eigenvalue repulsion in the confining phase.

Parton energy loss in cold nuclei

Within the generalized high-twist factorization formalism, we express the contribution from multiple parton scattering and induced gluon radiation to the DY dilepton spectra in terms of nuclear modified effective beam quark distribution function. We show that beam quark energy loss is characterized by jet transport parameter $\hat{q}$, which is related to the local gluon density of the medium. Using the value of $\hat{q}$ determined from the deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) data, we evaluate the nuclear modification factor in Drell-Yan process in p+A collisions. Effects of parton energy loss in the DY spectra are found negligible in the Fermilab experimental data at $E_{\rm lab}=800$ GeV relative to parton shadowing while the predicted suppression of DY spectra are significant at $E_{\rm lab}=120$ GeV.

How Wide is the Transition to Deconfinement?

Pure SU(3) glue theories exhibit a deconfining phase transition at a nonzero temperature, Tc. Using lattice measurements of the pressure, we develop a simple matrix model to describe the transition region, when T > Tc. This model, which involves three parameters, is used to compute the behavior of the 't Hooft loop. There is a Higgs phase in this region, where off diagonal color modes are heavy, and diagonal modes are light. Lattice measurements of the latter suggests that the transition region is narrow, extending only to about 1.2 Tc. This is in stark contrast to lattice measurements of the renormalized Polyakov loop, which indicates a much wider width. The possible implications for the differences in heavy ion collisions between RHIC and the LHC are discussed.

Parton Energy Loss and Modified Beam Quark Distribution Functions in Drell-Yan Process in p+A Collisions

Within the framework of generalized collinear factorization in perturbative QCD (pQCD), we study the effect of initial multiple parton scattering and induced parton energy loss in Drell-Yan (DY) process in proton-nucleus collisions. We express the contribution from multiple parton scattering and induced gluon radiation to the DY dilepton spectra in terms of nuclear modified effective beam quark distribution functions. The modification depends on the quark transport parameter in nuclear medium. This is similar to the final-state multiple parton scattering in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off large nuclei and leads to the suppression of the Drell-Yan cross section in $p+A$ relative to $p+p$ collisions. With the value of quark transport parameter determined from the nuclear modification of single-inclusive DIS hadron spectra as measured by the HERMES experiment, we calculate DY spectra in $p+A$ collisions and find the nuclear suppression due to beam parton energy loss negligible at the Fermilab energy $E_{\rm lab}$=800 GeV in the kinematic region as covered by the E866 experiment. Most of the observed nuclear suppression of DY spectra in E866 experiment can be described well by parton shadowing in target nuclei as given by the EPS08 parameterization. The effect of beam parton energy loss, however, becomes significant for DY lepton pairs with large beam parton momentum fraction $x^{\prime}$ or small target parton momentum fraction $x$. We also predict the DY cross section in $p+A$ collisions at lower beam proton energy $E_{\rm lab}$=120 GeV and show significant suppression due to initial state parton energy loss at moderately large $x^{\prime}$ where the effect of parton shadowing is very small.

Techniques for n-Particle Irreducible Effective Theories

In this paper we show that the skeleton diagrams in the m-Loop nPI effective action correspond to an infinite resummation of perturbative diagrams which is void of double counting at the m-Loop level. We also show that the variational equations of motion produced by the n-Loop nPI effective theory are equivalent to the Schwinger-Dyson equations, up to the order at which they are consistent with the underlying symmetries of the original theory. We use a diagrammatic technique to obtain the 5-Loop 5PI effective action for a scalar theory with cubic and quartic interactions, and verify that the result satisfies these two statements.

Gluon Propagator and Heavy Quark Potential in an Anisotropic QCD Plasma

The hard-loop resummed propagator in an anisotropic QCD plasma in general linear gauges are computed. We get the explicit expressions of the gluon propagator in covariant gauge, Coulomb gauge and temporal axial gauge. Considering one gluon exchange, the potential between heavy quarks is defined through the Fourier transform of the static propagator. We find that the potential exhibits angular dependence and that there is stronger attraction on distance scales on the order of the inverse Debye mass for quark pairs aligned along the direction of anisotropy than for transverse alignment.
