Asymptotic Behavior of the Principal Eigenvalue Problems with Large Divergence-Free Drifts

In this paper, we consider the following principal eigenvalue problem with a large divergence-free drift: \begin{equation}\label{0.1} -\varepsilonΔϕ-2α\nabla m(x)\cdot\nabla ϕ+V(x)ϕ=λ_αϕ \,\ \text{in}\, \ H_0^1(Ω),\tag{0.1} \end{equation} where the domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N (N\ge 1)$ is bounded with smooth boundary $\partialΩ$, the constants $\varepsilon>0$ and $α>0$ are the diffusion and drift coefficients, respectively, and $m(x)\in C^{2}(\barΩ)$, $V (x)\in C^γ(\barΩ)~(0<γ<1)$ are given functions. For a class of divergence-free drifts where $m$ is a harmonic function in $Ω$ and has no first integral in $H_{0}^{1}(Ω)$, we prove the convergence of the principal eigenpair $(λ_α, ϕ)$ for (0.1) as $α\rightarrow+\infty$, which addresses a special case of the open question proposed in [H. Berestycki, F. Hamel and N. Nadirashvili, CMP, 2005]. Moreover, we further investigate the refined limiting profiles of the principal eigenpair $(λ_α, ϕ)$ for (0.1) as $α\rightarrow+\infty$, which display the visible effects of the large divergence-free drifts on the principal eigenpair $(λ_α, ϕ)$.

Singular Behavior of an Electrostatic--Elastic Membrane System with an External Pressure

We analyze nonnegative solutions of the nonlinear elliptic problem $Δu=\frac{λf(x)}{u^2}+P$, where $λ>0$ and $P\geq0$, on a bounded domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^N$ ($N\geq 1$) with a Dirichlet boundary condition. This equation models an electrostatic--elastic membrane system with an external pressure $P\geq 0$, where $λ>0$ denotes the applied voltage. First, we completely address the existence and nonexistence of positive solutions. The classification of all possible singularities at $|x|=0$ for nonnegative solutions $u(x)$ satisfying $u(0)=0$ is then analyzed for the special case where $Ω=B_1(0)\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ and $f(x)=|x|^α$ with $α\geq0$. In particular, we show that for some $α,$ $u(x)$ admits only the "isotropic" singularity at $|x|=0$, and otherwise $u(x)$ may admit the "anisotropic" singularity at $|x|=0$. When $u(x)$ admits the "isotropic" singularity at $|x|=0$, the refined singularity of $u(x)$ at $|x|=0$ is further investigated, depending on whether $P>0$, by applying Fourier analysis.

The Lieb-Yau Conjecture for Ground States of Pseudo-Relativistic Boson Stars

It is known that ground states of the pseudo-relativistic Boson stars exist if and only if the stellar mass $N>0$ satisfies $N<N^*$, where the finite constant $N^*$ is called the critical stellar mass. Lieb and Yau conjecture in [Comm. Math. Phys., 1987] that ground states of the pseudo-relativistic Boson stars are unique for each $N<N^*$. In this paper, we prove that the above uniqueness conjecture holds for the particular case where $N>0$ is small enough.

Local Uniqueness and Refined Spike Profiles of Ground States for Two-Dimensional Attractive Bose-Einstein Condensates

We consider ground states of two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates in a trap with attractive interactions, which can be described equivalently by positive minimizers of the $L^2-$critical constraint Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional. It is known that ground states exist if and only if $a< a^*:= \|w\|_2^2$, where $a$ denotes the interaction strength and $w$ is the unique positive solution of $Δw-w+w^3=0$ in $R^2$. In this paper, we prove the local uniqueness and refined spike profiles of ground states as $a\nearrow a^*$, provided that the trapping potential $h(x)$ is homogeneous and $H(y)=\int_{R^2} h(x+y)w^2(x)dx$ admits a unique and non-degenerate critical point.

Properties of ground states of attractive Gross-Pitaevskii equations with multi-well potentials

We are interested in the attractive Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation in $\R^2$, where the external potential $V(x)$ vanishes on $m$ disjoint bounded domains $Ω_i\subset \R^2\ (i=1,2,\cdots,m)$ and $V(x)\to\infty$ as $|x|\to\infty$, that is, the union of these $Ω_i$ is the bottom of the potential well. By making some delicate estimates on the energy functional of the GP equation, we prove that when the interaction strength $a$ approaches some critical value $a^*$ the ground states concentrate and blow up at the center of the incircle of some $Ω_j$ which has the largest inradius. Moreover, under some further conditions on $V(x)$ we show that the ground states of GP equations are unique and radially symmetric at leat for almost every $a \in (0, a^*)$.

Energy estimates and symmetry breaking in attractive Bose-Einstein condensates with ring-shaped potentials

This paper is concerned with the properties of $L^2$-normalized minimizers of the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) functional for a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interaction and ring-shaped potential. By establishing some delicate estimates on the least energy of the GP functional, we prove that symmetry breaking occurs for the minimizers of the GP functional as the interaction strength $a>0$ approaches a critical value $a^*$, each minimizer of the GP functional concentrates to a point on the circular bottom of the potential well and then is non-radially symmetric as $a\nearrow a^*$. However, when $a>0$ is suitably small we prove that the minimizers of the GP functional are unique, and this unique minimizer is radially symmetric.

Concentration behavior of standing waves for almost mass critical nonlinear Schrödinger equations

We study the following nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$ iu_t=-Δu+V(x)u-a|u|^qu \quad (t,x)\in \mathbb{R}^1\times \mathbb{R}^2, $$ where $a>0, \ q\in(0,2)$ and $V(x)$ is some type of trapping potentials. For any fixed $a>a^*:= \|Q\|_2^2$, where $Q$ is the unique (up to translations) positive radial solution of $Δu-u+u^3=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$, by directly using constrained variational method and energy estimates we present a detailed analysis of the concentration and symmetry breaking of the standing waves for the above equation as $q\nearrow 2$.

On the Mass Concentration for Bose-Einstein Condensates with Attractive Interactions

We consider two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interaction, described by the Gross-Pitaevskii functional. Minimizers of this functional exist only if the interaction strength $a$ satisfies $a < a^*= \|Q\|_2^2$, where $Q$ is the unique positive radial solution of $Δu-u+u^3=0$ in $\R^2$. We present a detailed analysis of the behavior of minimizers as $a$ approaches $a^*$, where all the mass concentrates at a global minimum of the trapping potential.
