Interactions of strings on a T-fold

We consider the interactions of strings on T-folds from the world-sheet point of view which are exact in $α'$. As a concrete example, we take a model where the internal torus at the so(8) enhancement point is twisted by T-duality (T-folded), and compute the scattering amplitudes of a class of massless strings. The four-point amplitudes involving both twisted and untwisted strings are obtained in a closed form in terms of the hypergeometric function. By their factorization, the three-point coupling of the twisted and untwisted strings is found to be suppressed by the chiral momenta along the internal torus, and quantized in integer powers of 1/4. The asymptotic forms of the four-point amplitudes in high-energy limits are also obtained. Our results rely only on general properties of the asymmetric orbifold by the T-duality twist and of the Lie algebra lattice from the symmetry enhancement, and thus may be extended qualitatively to more general T-folds.

Notes on Vanishing Cosmological Constant without Bose-Fermi Cancellation

In this article we discuss how one can systematically construct the point particle theories that realize the vanishing one-loop cosmological constant without the bose-fermi cancellation. Our construction is based on the asymmetric (or non-geometric) orbifolds of supersymmetric string vacua. Using the building blocks of their partition functions and their modular properties, we construct the theories which would be naturally identified with certain point particle theories including infinite mass spectra, but not with string vacua. They are obviously non-supersymmetric due to the mismatch of the bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom at each mass level. Nevertheless, it is found that the one-loop cosmological constant vanishes, after removing the parameter effectively playing the role of the UV cut-off. As concrete examples we demonstrate the constructions of the models based on the toroidal asymmetric orbifolds with the Lie algebra lattices (Englert-Neveu lattices) by making use of the analysis given in [26].

Exact mass-coupling relation for the homogeneous sine-Gordon model

We derive the exact mass-coupling relation of the simplest multi-scale quantum integrable model, i.e., the homogeneous sine-Gordon model with two mass scales. The relation is obtained by comparing the perturbed conformal field theory description of the model valid at short distances to the large distance bootstrap description based on the model's integrability. In particular, we find a differential equation for the relation by constructing conserved tensor currents which satisfy a generalization of the $Θ$ sum rule Ward identity. The mass-coupling relation is written in terms of hypergeometric functions.

Non-supersymmetric Asymmetric Orbifolds with Vanishing Cosmological Constant

We study type II string vacua defined by torus compactifications accompanied by T-duality twists. We realize the string vacua, specifically, by means of the asymmetric orbifolding associated to the chiral reflections combined with a shift, which are interpreted as describing the compactification on `T-folds'. We discuss possible consistent actions of the chiral reflection on the Ramond-sector of the world-sheet fermions, and explicitly construct non-supersymmetric as well as supersymmetric vacua. Above all, we demonstrate a simple realization of non-supersymmetric vacua with vanishing cosmological constant at one loop. Our orbifold group is generated only by a single element, which results in simpler models than those with such property known previously.

On the mass-coupling relation of multi-scale quantum integrable models

We determine exactly the mass-coupling relation for the simplest multi-scale quantum integrable model, the homogenous sine-Gordon model with two independent mass-scales. We first reformulate its perturbed coset CFT description in terms of the perturbation of a projected product of minimal models. This representation enables us to identify conserved tensor currents on the UV side. These UV operators are then mapped via form factor perturbation theory to operators on the IR side, which are characterized by their form factors. The relation between the UV and IR operators is given in terms of the sought-for mass-coupling relation. By generalizing the $Θ$ sum rule Ward identity we are able to derive differential equations for the mass-coupling relation, which we solve in terms of hypergeometric functions. We check these results against the data obtained by numerically solving the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations, and find a complete agreement.

Non-geometric Backgrounds Based on Topological Interfaces

We study simple models of the world-sheet CFTs describing non-geometric backgrounds based on the topological interfaces, the `gluing condition' of which imposes T-duality- or analogous twists. To be more specific, we start with the torus partition function on a target space S^1 [base] x (S^1 x S^1) [fiber] with rather general values of radii. The fiber CFT is defined by inserting the twist operators consisting of the topological interfaces which lie along the cycles of the world-sheet torus according to the winding numbers of the base circle. We construct the partition functions involving such duality twists. The modular invariance is achieved straightforwardly, whereas `unitarization' is generically necessary to maintain the unitarity. We demonstrate it in the case of the equal fiber radii. The resultant models are closely related to the CFTs with the discrete torsion. The unitarization is also physically interpreted as multiple insertions of the twist/interface operators along various directions.

Quantum Wronskian approach to six-point gluon scattering amplitudes at strong coupling

We study the six-point gluon scattering amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling based on the twisted Z_4-symmetric integrable model. The lattice regularization allows us to derive the associated thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) equations as well as the functional relations among the Q-/T-/Y-functions. The quantum Wronskian relation for the Q-/T-functions plays an important role in determining a series of the expansion coefficients of the T-/Y-functions around the UV limit, including the dependence on the twist parameter. Studying the CFT limit of the TBA equations, we derive the leading analytic expansion of the remainder function for the general kinematics around the limit where the dual Wilson loops become regular-polygonal. We also compare the rescaled remainder functions at strong coupling with those at two, three and four loops, and find that they are close to each other along the trajectories parameterized by the scale parameter of the integrable model.

Null-polygonal minimal surfaces in AdS_4 from perturbed W minimal models

We study the null-polygonal minimal surfaces in AdS_4, which correspond to the gluon scattering amplitudes/Wilson loops in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling. The area of the minimal surfaces with n cusps is characterized by the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) integral equations or the Y-system of the homogeneous sine-Gordon model, which is regarded as the SU(n-4)_4/U(1)^{n-5} generalized parafermion theory perturbed by the weight-zero adjoint operators. Based on the relation to the TBA systems of the perturbed W minimal models, we solve the TBA equations by using the conformal perturbation theory, and obtain the analytic expansion of the remainder function around the UV/regular-polygonal limit for n=6 and 7. We compare the rescaled remainder function for n=6 with the two-loop one, to observe that they are close to each other similarly to the AdS_3 case.

T-functions and multi-gluon scattering amplitudes

We study gluon scattering amplitudes/Wilson loops in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling which correspond to minimal surfaces with a light-like polygonal boundary in AdS_3. We find a concise expression of the remainder function in terms of the T-function of the associated thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) system. Continuing our previous work on the analytic expansion around the CFT/regular-polygonal limit, we derive a formula of the leading-order expansion for the general 2n-point remainder function. The T-system allows us to encode its momentum dependence in only one function of the TBA mass parameters, which is obtained by conformal perturbation theory. We compute its explicit form in the single mass cases. We also find that the rescaled remainder functions at strong coupling and at two loops are close to each other, and their ratio at the leading order approaches a constant near 0.9 for large n.

Gauge/string duality and thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations

We review recent developments in the study of gluon scattering amplitudes of the four-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling based on the gauge/string duality and its underlying integrability. The scattering amplitudes are given by the area of minimal surfaces in five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space with a null polygonal boundary. These minimal surfaces are described by integral equations of the form of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations. Generalizing the result regarding the six-point amplitudes, we observe a general connection between the minimal surfaces and the homogenous sine-Gordon model, which is a class of two-dimensional integrable models associated with certain coset conformal field theories. We also demonstrate that the identification of the underlying integrable models is useful for analyzing the amplitudes by explicitly deriving an expansion of the six-point amplitudes around a special kinematic point.

Gluon scattering amplitudes from gauge/string duality and integrability

We discuss gluon scattering amplitudes/null-polygonal Wilson loops of N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling based on the gauge/string duality and its underlying integrability. We focus on the amplitudes/Wilson loops corresponding to the minimal surfaces in AdS_3, which are described by the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations of the homogeneous sine-Gordon model. Using conformal perturbation theory and an interesting relation between the g-function (boundary entropy) and the T-function, we derive analytic expansions around the limit where the Wilson loops become regular-polygonal. We also compare our analytic results with those at two loops, to find that the rescaled remainder functions are close to each other for all multi-point amplitudes.

On supersymmetric interfaces for string theory

We construct the world-sheet interface which preserves space-time supersymmetry in type II superstring theories in the Green-Schwarz formalism. This is an analog of the conformal interface in two-dimensional conformal field theory. We show that a class of the supersymmetric interfaces generates T-dualities of type II theories, and that these interfaces have a geometrical interpretation in the doubled target space. We compute the partition function with a pair of the supersymmetric interfaces inserted, from which we read off the spectrum of the modes coupled to the interfaces and the Casimir energy between them. We also derive the transformation rules under which a set of D-branes is transformed to another by the interface.

g-Functions and gluon scattering amplitudes at strong coupling

We study gluon scattering amplitudes/Wilson loops in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling by calculating the area of the minimal surfaces in AdS_3 based on the associated thermodynamic Bethe ansatz system. The remainder function of the amplitudes is computed by evaluating the free energy, the T- and Y-functions of the homogeneous sine-Gordon model. Using conformal field theory (CFT) perturbation, we examine the mass corrections to the free energy around the CFT point corresponding to the regular polygonal Wilson loop. Based on the equivalence between the T-functions and the g-functions, which measure the boundary entropy, we calculate corrections to the T- and Y-functions as well as express them at the CFT point by the modular S-matrix. We evaluate the remainder function around the CFT point for 8 and 10-point amplitudes explicitly and compare these analytic expressions with the 2-loop formulas. The two rescaled remainder functions show very similar power series structures.

A note on string solutions in AdS_3

We systematically search for classical open string solutions in AdS_3 within the general class expressed by elliptic functions (i.e., the genus-one finite-gap solutions). By explicitly solving the reality and Virasoro conditions, we give a classification of the allowed solutions. When the elliptic modulus degenerates, we find a class of solutions with six null boundaries, among which two pairs are collinear. By adding the S^1 sector, we also find four-cusp solutions with null boundaries expressed by the elliptic functions.

Constant mean curvature surfaces in AdS_3

We construct constant mean curvature surfaces of the general finite-gap type in AdS_3. The special case with zero mean curvature gives minimal surfaces relevant for the study of Wilson loops and gluon scattering amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills. We also analyze properties of the finite-gap solutions including asymptotic behavior and the degenerate (soliton) limit, and discuss possible solutions with null boundaries.

Six-point gluon scattering amplitudes from Z_4-symmetric integrable model

We study six-point gluon scattering amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling by investigating the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations of the underlying Z_4-symmetric integrable model both analytically and numerically. By the conformal field theory (CFT) perturbation, we compute the free energy part of the remainder function with generic chemical potential near the CFT/small mass limit. Combining this with the expansion of the Y-functions, we obtain the remainder function near the small mass limit up to a function of the chemical potential, which can be evaluated numerically. We also find the leading corrections to the remainder function near the large mass limit. We confirm that these results are in good agreement with numerical computations.

Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz Equations for Minimal Surfaces in AdS_3

We study classical open string solutions with a null polygonal boundary in AdS_3 in relation to gluon scattering amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills at strong coupling. We derive in full detail the set of integral equations governing the decagonal and the dodecagonal solutions and identify them with the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations of the homogeneous sine-Gordon models. By evaluating the free energy in the conformal limit we compute the central charges, from which we observe general correspondence between the polygonal solutions in AdS_n and generalized parafermions.

On time-dependent AdS/CFT

We clarify aspects of the holographic AdS/CFT correspondence that are typical of Lorentzian signature, to lay the foundation for a treatment of time-dependent gravity and conformal field theory phenomena. We provide a derivation of bulk-to-boundary propagators associated to advanced, retarded and Feynman bulk propagators, and provide a better understanding of the boundary conditions satisfied by the bulk fields at the horizon. We interpret the subleading behavior of the wavefunctions in terms of specific vacuum expectation values, and compute two-point functions in our framework. We connect our bulk methods to the closed time path formalism in the boundary field theory.

Operator product expansion in SL(2) conformal field theory

In the conformal field theories having affine SL(2) symmetry, we study the operator product expansion (OPE) involving primary fields in highest weight representations. For this purpose, we analyze properties of primary fields with definite SL(2) weights, and calculate their two- and three-point functions. Using these correlators, we show that the correct OPE is obtained when one of the primary fields belongs to the degenerate highest weight representation. We briefly comment on the OPE in the SL(2,R) WZNW model.

Path Integral Approach to String Theory on AdS_3

Using the path integral approach, we discuss the correlation functions of the $SL(2,\bfC)/SU(2)$ WZW model, which corresponds to the string theory on the Euclidean $AdS_3$. We obtain the two- and three-point functions for generic primary fields in closed forms. By an appropriate change of the normalization of the primary fields, our results coincide with those by Teschner, which were obtained by using the bootstrap approach. The supergravity results are also obtained in the semi-classical limit.

BTZ black holes and the near-horizon geometry of higher-dimensional black holes

We investigate the connection between the BTZ black holes and the near-horizon geometry of higher-dimensional black holes. Under mild conditions, we show that (i) if a black hole has a global structure of the type of the non-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes, its near-horizon geometry is $AdS_2$ times a sphere, and further (ii) if such a black hole is obtained from a boosted black string by dimensional reduction, the near-horizon geometry of the latter contains a BTZ black hole. Because of these facts, the calculation of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and the absorption cross-sections of scalar fields is essentially reduced to the corresponding calculation in the BTZ geometry under appropriate conditions. This holds even if the geometry is not supersymmetric in the extremal limit. Several examples are discussed. We also discuss some generalizations to geometries which do not have $AdS$ near the horizon.

D0-branes in Gepner models and N=2 black holes

In this paper D-brane boundary states constructed in Gepner models are used to analyze some aspects of the dynamics of D0-branes in Calabi-Yau compactifications of type II theories to four dimensions. It is shown that the boundary states correspond to BPS objects carrying dyonic charges. By analyzing the couplings to closed string fields a correspondence between the D0-branes and extremal charged black holes in N=2 supergravity is found.

D-branes in Gepner models and supersymmetry

Boundary states corresponding to wrapped D-branes in Calabi-Yau compactifications of type II strings are discussed using Gepner models. In particular boundary conditions corresponding to D-0 branes and D-instantons in four dimensions are investigated. The boundary states constructed by Recknagel and Schomerus are analyzed in the light-cone gauge and the broken and conserved space-time supersymmetry charges are found. The geometrical interpretation of these algebraically constructed boundary states is clarified in some simple cases. Moreover, the action of mirror symmetry and other discrete symmetries of the Gepner model on the boundary states are discussed. As an application the boundary states are used to calculate instanton induced corrections to metric on the hypermultiplets in the N=2 effective action.

Propagation of Scalars in Non-extremal Black Hole and Black p-brane Geometries

We discuss the propagation of scalars in a large class of non-extremal black hole and black p-brane geometries in generic dimensions. We show that the radial wave equation near the horizon possesses the SL(2,R) structure in every case; approximately it takes the form of the wave equation in the SL(2,R) (AdS_3) background and has a symmetry related to the T-duality of the string model in that geometry. We see a close connection to two and three dimensional black holes. We also find that, in some parameter region, the absorption cross-sections by the black objects take the form expected from a conformal field theory. Our results indicate that some of the properties known about a certain class of four and five dimensional black holes hold more generally.
