Baryon Asymmetric Universe from Spontaneous CP Violation

Spontaneous CP violation, such as the Nelson-Barr (NB) mechanism, is an attractive scenario for addressing the strong CP problem while realizing the observed phase of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark-mixing matrix. However, not only the CKM phase but also the baryon asymmetric Universe requires sources of CP violation. In this study, we show that a supersymmetric NB mechanism can naturally accommodate the Affleck-Dine (AD) baryogenesis within a CP-invariant Lagrangian. The model provides flat directions associated with new heavy quarks. Focusing on one of the directions, we find that the correct baryon asymmetry is obtained with a sufficiently low reheating temperature which does not cause the gravitino problem. Some parameter space is consistent with the gravitino dark matter. We assess radiative corrections to the strong CP phase induced by gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking and CP-violating heavy fields and show that the strong CP problem is solved in a viable parameter space where the visible sector supersymmetric particles must be lighter than O(100) TeV. Even in the case that they are heavier than the TeV scale, our model predicts the neutron electric dipole moment within the reach of the near future experiments. Our model addresses the electroweak naturalness problem, strong CP problem, baryon asymmetric Universe, and dark matter. Then, the model may give a new compelling paradigm of physics beyond the Standard Model.

Deeply Learned Preselection of Higgs Dijet Decays at Future Lepton Colliders

Future electron-positron colliders will play a leading role in the precision measurement of Higgs boson couplings which is one of the central interests in particle physics. Aiming at maximizing the performance to measure the Higgs couplings to the bottom, charm and strange quarks, we develop machine learning methods to improve the selection of events with a Higgs decaying to dijets. Our methods are based on the Boosted Decision Tree (BDT), Fully-Connected Neural Network (FCNN) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). We find that the BDT and FCNN-based algorithms outperform the conventional cut-based method. With our improved selection of Higgs decaying to dijet events using the FCNN, the charm quark signal strength is measured with a $16\%$ error, which is roughly a factor of two better than the $34\%$ precision obtained by the cut-based analysis. Also, the strange quark signal strength is constrained as $μ_{ss} \lesssim 35$ at the $95\%$ C.L. with the FCNN, which is to be compared with $μ_{ss} \lesssim 70$ obtained by the cut-based method.

Electroweak-like Baryogenesis with New Chiral Matter

We propose a framework where a phase transition associated with a gauge symmetry breaking that occurs (not far) above the electroweak scale sets a stage for baryogenesis similar to the electroweak baryogenesis in the Standard Model. A concrete realization utilizes the breaking of $SU(2)_R \times U(1)_X \rightarrow U(1)_Y$. New chiral fermions charged under the extended gauge symmetry have nonzero lepton numbers, which makes the $B-L$ symmetry anomalous. The new lepton sector contains a large flavor-dependent CP violation, similar to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa phase, without inducing sizable electric dipole moments of the Standard Model particles. A bubble wall dynamics associated with the first-order phase transition and $SU(2)_R$ sphaleron processes generate a lepton asymmetry, which is transferred into a baryon asymmetry via the ordinary electroweak sphaleron process. Unlike the Standard Model electroweak baryogenesis, the new phase transition can be of the strong first order and the new CP violation is not significantly suppressed by Yukawa couplings, so that the observed asymmetry can be produced. The model can be probed by collider searches for new particles and the observation of gravitational waves. One of the new leptons becomes a dark matter candidate. The model can be also embedded into a left-right symmetric theory to solve the strong CP problem.

Multiple Hierarchies from a Warped Extra Dimension

Theories beyond the Standard Model often contain mass scales hierarchically different from the electroweak scale and the Planck scale. It has been shown that such hierarchical mass scales can be realized as typical energy scales of multiple 3-branes in a 5D warped spacetime. We present a mechanism for stabilizing the intervals between the multiple 3-branes in the warped extra dimension, by introducing a single 5D scalar field with brane-localized potentials. We discuss the radion stabilization by solving the Einstein equation and the scalar field equation of motion so that a backreaction effect on the geometry due to the presence of the scalar field is taken into account. Perturbations from the background configuration are then considered with proper identification of multiple radion degrees of freedom. By solving their equations of motion, we compute the mass spectrum of the radion-scalar field system and the radion couplings to brane-localized matter fields, which are found to be suppressed by typical energy scales and radion profiles at the branes. We also compute the mass spectrum of Kaluza-Klein gravitons and their profiles in the extra dimension. Some applications of the setup are briefly described. Our analysis provides a solid ground to build 5D warped extra dimension models with multiple 3-branes.

Muon Electric Dipole Moment as a Probe of Flavor-Diagonal CP Violation

Electric dipole moments (EDMs) of elementary particles are powerful probes of new physics with flavor-diagonal CP violation. The reported discrepancy in the muon anomalous magnetic moment motivates us to explore to what extent new physics with flavor-diagonal CP violation to address the discrepancy is probed by searches for the muon EDM. As a benchmark, we focus on a CP-violating two-Higgs-doublet model to explain the muon $g-2$ anomaly where the muon exclusively couples to one Higgs doublet. Since contributions to flavor violating processes as well as the electron EDM are suppressed, the muon EDM becomes an essential probe of the model. Our result shows that some viable parameter space leads to the muon EDM of around $d_μ \simeq 6 \times 10^{-23} \, e \, \rm cm$ probed by the PSI experiment and most of the parameter space is covered by the proposed J-PARC experiment.

High Quality Axion via a Doubly Composite Dynamics

We explore a new framework that furnishes a mechanism to simultaneously address the electroweak naturalness problem and the axion high quality problem. The framework is based on a doubly composite dynamics where the second confinement takes place after the CFT encounters the first confinement and the theory flows into another conformal fixed point. For a calculable example, we present a holographic dual description of the 4D model via a warped extra dimension model with three 3-branes. While the hierarchy problem is taken cared of by the localization of the Higgs fields on the TeV brane just as in the original Randall-Sundrum model, the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry is realized as a gauge symmetry in the bulk of the extra dimension to solve the axion quality problem. We introduce a 5D scalar field whose potential at the intermediate brane drives spontaneous breaking of the PQ symmetry. Then, the PQ breaking scale is given by the scale of the intermediate brane and is naturally small compared to the Planck scale. The axion bulk profile is significantly suppressed around the UV brane, which protects the axion from gravitational violations of the PQ symmetry on the UV brane. Our model genuinely predicts the existence of the Kaluza-Klein excitations of the QCD axion at around the TeV scale and relatively light extra Higgs bosons.

Inelastic Dark Matter Electron Scattering and the XENON1T Excess

Detection of electron recoils by dark matter (DM) may reveal the structure of the dark sector. We consider a scenario where a heavier DM particle inelastically scatters off an electron and is converted into a lighter DM particle. A small mass difference between the two DM particles is transferred into electron recoil energy. We investigate the DM-electron interaction mediated by a massive dark photon and evaluate the inelastic DM scattering rate, taking account of the atomic structure. It is found that the scattering rate is significantly enhanced because of the small mass splitting, which allows for a small momentum transfer matched with the size of the electron wave function. We show that there exists a viable parameter space which explains the excess of electron recoil events around 2-3 keV recently reported by the XENON1T experiment.

Interpreting the Electron EDM Constraint

The ACME collaboration has recently announced a new constraint on the electron EDM, $|d_e| < 1.1 \times 10^{-29}\, e\, {\rm cm}$, from measurements of the ThO molecule. This is a powerful constraint on CP-violating new physics: even new physics generating the EDM at two loops is constrained at the multi-TeV scale. We interpret the bound in the context of different scenarios for new physics: a general order-of-magnitude analysis for both the electron EDM and the CP-odd electron-nucleon coupling; 1-loop SUSY, probing sleptons above 10 TeV; 2-loop SUSY, probing multi-TeV charginos or stops; and finally, new physics that generates the EDM via the charm quark or top quark Yukawa couplings. In the last scenario, new physics generates a "QULE operator" $(q_f \barσ^{μν}{\bar u}_f) \cdot (\ell {\barσ}_{μν} {\bar e})$, which in turn generates the EDM through RG evolution. If the QULE operator is generated at tree level, this corresponds to a previously studied leptoquark model. For the first time, we also classify scenarios in which the QULE operator is generated at one loop through a box diagram, which include SUSY and leptoquark models. The electron EDM bound is the leading constraint on a wide variety of theories of CP-violating new physics interacting with the Higgs boson or the top quark. We argue that any future nonzero measurement of an electron EDM will provide a strong motivation for constructing new colliders at the highest feasible energies.

Light Dark Photon Dark Matter from Inflation

We discuss the possibility of producing a light dark photon dark matter through a coupling between the dark photon field and the inflaton. The dark photon with a large wavelength is efficiently produced due to the inflaton motion during inflation and becomes non-relativistic before the time of matter-radiation equality. We compute the amount of production analytically. The correct relic abundance is realized with a dark photon mass extending down to $10^{-21} \, \rm eV$.

Strange Jet Tagging

Tagging jets of strongly interacting particles initiated by energetic strange quarks is one of the few largely unexplored Standard Model object classification problems remaining in high energy collider physics. In this paper we investigate the purest version of this classification problem in the form of distinguishing strange-quark jets from down-quark jets. Our strategy relies on the fact that a strange-quark jet contains on average a higher ratio of neutral kaon energy to neutral pion energy than does a down-quark jet. Long-lived neutral kaons deposit energy mainly in the hadronic calorimeter of a high energy detector, while neutral pions decay promptly to photons that deposit energy mainly in the electromagnetic calorimeter. In addition, short-lived neutral kaons that decay in flight to charged pion pairs can be identified as a secondary vertex in the inner tracking system. Using these handles we study different approaches to distinguishing strange-quark from down-quark jets, including single variable cut-based methods, a boosted decision tree (BDT) with a small number of simple variables, and a deep learning convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture with jet images. We show that modest gains are possible from the CNN compared with the BDT or a single variable. Starting from jet samples with only strange-quark and down-quark jets, the CNN algorithm can improve the strange to down ratio by a factor of roughly 2 for strange tagging efficiencies below 0.2, and by a factor of 2.5 for strange tagging efficiencies near 0.02.

Searching for New Physics with Deep Autoencoders

We introduce a potentially powerful new method of searching for new physics at the LHC, using autoencoders and unsupervised deep learning. The key idea of the autoencoder is that it learns to map "normal" events back to themselves, but fails to reconstruct "anomalous" events that it has never encountered before. The reconstruction error can then be used as an anomaly threshold. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this idea using QCD jets as background and boosted top jets and RPV gluino jets as signal. We show that a deep autoencoder can significantly improve signal over background when trained on backgrounds only, or even directly on data which contains a small admixture of signal. Finally we examine the correlation of the autoencoders with jet mass and show how the jet mass distribution can be stable against cuts in reconstruction loss. This may be important for estimating QCD backgrounds from data. As a test case we show how one could plausibly discover 400 GeV RPV gluinos using an autoencoder combined with a bump hunt in jet mass. This opens up the exciting possibility of training directly on actual data to discover new physics with no prior expectations or theory prejudice.

Conductivity bounds in probe brane models

We discuss upper and lower bounds on the electrical conductivity of finite temperature strongly coupled quantum field theories, holographically dual to probe brane models, within linear response. In a probe limit where disorder is introduced entirely through an inhomogeneous background charge density, we find simple lower and upper bounds on the electrical conductivity in arbitrary dimensions. In field theories in two spatial dimensions, we show that both bounds persist even when disorder is included in the bulk metric. We discuss the challenges with finding sharp lower bounds on conductivity in three or more spatial dimensions when the metric is inhomogeneous.

Diboson Excess from a New Strong Force

We explore a "partial unification" model that could explain the diphoton event excess around $750 \, \rm GeV$ recently reported by the LHC experiments. A new strong gauge group is combined with the ordinary color and hypercharge gauge groups. The VEV responsible for the combination is of the order of the $SU(2)\times U(1)$ breaking scale, but the coupling of the new physics to standard model particles is suppressed by the strong interaction of the new gauge group. This simple extension of the standard model has a rich phenomenology, including composite particles of the new confining gauge interaction, a coloron and a $Z'$ which are rather weakly coupled to standard model particles, and massive vector bosons charged under both the ordinary color and hypercharge gauge groups and the new strong gauge group. The new scalar glueball could have mass of around $750 \, \rm GeV$, be produced by gluon fusion and decay into two photons, both through loops of the new massive vector bosons. The simplest version of the model has some issues: the massive vector bosons are stable and the coloron and the $Z'$ are strongly constrained by search data. An extension of the model to include additional fermions with the new gauge coupling, though not as simple and elegant, can address both issues and more. It allows the massive vector boson to decay into a colorless, neutral state that could be a candidate of the dark matter. And the coloron and $Z'$ can decay dominantly into the new fermions, completely changing the search bounds. In addition, $SU(N)$ fermions below the symmetry breaking scale make it more plausible that the lightest glueball is at $750$~GeV. Whatever becomes of the $750$~GeV diphoton excess, the model is an unusual example of how new physics at small scales could be hidden by strong interactions.

Footprints of New Strong Dynamics via Anomaly and the 750 GeV Diphoton

The chiral anomaly provides a smoking-gun evidence of a new confining gauge theory. Motivated by a reported event excess in a diphoton invariant mass distribution at the LHC, we discuss a scenario that a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone (pNG) boson of a new QCD-like theory is produced by gluon fusion and decays into a pair of the standard model gauge bosons. Despite the strong dynamics, the production cross section and the decay widths are determined by anomaly matching condition. The excess can be explained by the pNG boson with mass of around 750 GeV. The model also predicts exotic hadrons such as a color octet scalar and baryons. Some of them are within the reach of the LHC experiment.

Low-Scale Gauge Mediation with a 100 TeV Gravitino

We propose a new framework of low-scale gauge-mediated supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking with a gravitino mass of O(100) TeV. The usual 4D gauge mediation models predict a light gravitino and suffer from cosmological problems. In our framework, a heavy gravitino in gauge mediation is realized with a flat extra-dimension, whose compactification scale is around the grand unified theory scale. Superparticle masses of the visible sector from gravity/anomaly mediation are suppressed, and they are purely generated by usual gauge mediation on the visible brane. Importantly, the Higgs Bmu-term vanishes at the leading order, which enables us to obtain the suitable mu-Bmu relation for the electroweak symmetry breaking. We discuss such models considering two possibilities of the SUSY breaking source: 1) Scherk-Schwarz SUSY breaking which we call Scherk-Schwarz Gauge Mediation and 2) gravitational SUSY breaking localized on a hidden brane. In the case 2), the cosmological moduli problem may be relaxed as well.

SUSY Higgs Mass and Collider Signals with a Hidden Valley

We propose a framework of supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model that can ameliorate both the SUSY Higgs mass problem and the missing superpartner problem. New vectorlike matter fields couple to the Higgs and provide new loop contributions to its mass. New Yukawa couplings are sizable and large supersymmetry breaking is not needed to lift the Higgs mass. To avoid a Landau pole for the new Yukawa couplings, these fields are charged under a new gauge group, which confines and leads to a Hidden Valley-like phenomenology. The Hidden Valley sector is almost supersymmetric and ordinary sparticles decay to exotic new states which decay back to Standard Model particles and gravitinos with reduced missing energy. We construct a simplified model to simulate this scenario and find a viable parameter space of specific benchmark models which ameliorates both of the major phenomenological problems with supersymmetry.

A New Scheme for NMSSM in Gauge Mediation

We propose a new framework for the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM) in gauge mediation, where in general the correct electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) is difficult to be explained. The difficulty is caused by the absence of a soft supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking mass for the NMSSM singlet S. In our framework, S is a meson in a hidden QCD. This QCD is responsible for the dynamical SUSY breaking, forming S, and the soft SUSY breaking mass for S, which is a key to explain the correct EWSB: all the ingredients for successful phenomenology originate from the common dynamics. From the requirement of the successful EWSB, the low-scale SUSY breaking around 100-1000 TeV is predicted. This is favored to avoid the large fine-tuning.

Baryon as Impurity for Phase Transition in String Landscape

We consider a decay of a false vacuum in flux compactifications of type IIB string theory and study a catalytic effect for a phase transition induced by a new type of impurities. We concentrate on the large N dual of a D5-brane/anti-D5-brane system which has a rich vacuum structure. We show that D3-branes wrapping the 3-cycles can form a dibaryon and make a bound state with a monopole. We find that these baryon-like objects can make the lifetime of the metastable vacuum shorter.

Deconstruction, Holography and Emergent Supersymmetry

We study a gauge theory in a 5D warped space via the dimensional deconstruction that a higher dimensional gauge theory is constructed from a moose of 4D gauge groups. By the AdS/CFT correspondence, a 5D warped gauge theory is dual to a 4D conformal field theory (CFT) with a global symmetry. As far as physics of the gauge theory, we obtain the one-to-one correspondence between each component of a moose of gauge groups and that of a CFT. We formulate a supersymmetric extension of deconstruction and explore the framework of natural supersymmetry in a 5D warped space -- the supersymmetric Randall-Sundrum model with the IR-brane localized Higgs and bulk fermions -- via the gauge moose. In this model, a supersymmetry breaking source is located at the end of the moose corresponding to the UV brane and the first two generations of squarks are decoupled. With left-right gauge symmetries in the bulk of the moose, we demonstrate realization of accidental or emergent supersymmetry of the Higgs sector in comparison with the proposed "Moose/CFT correspondence."

Natural Supersymmetry in Warped Space

We explore the possibility of solving the hierarchy problem by combining the paradigms of supersymmetry and compositeness. Both paradigms are under pressure from the results of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and combining them allows both a higher confinement scale -- due to effective supersymmetry in the low energy theory -- and heavier superpartners -- due to the composite nature of the Higgs boson -- without sacrificing naturalness. The supersymmetric Randall-Sundrum model provides a concrete example where calculations are possible, and we pursue a realistic model in this context. With a few assumptions, we are led to a model with bulk fermions, a left-right gauge symmetry in the bulk, and supersymmetry breaking on the UV brane. The first two generations of squarks are decoupled, reducing LHC signatures but also leading to quadratic divergences at two loops. The model predicts light $W'$ and $Z'$ gauge bosons, and present LHC constraints on exotic gauge bosons imply a high confinement scale and mild tuning from the quadratic divergences, but the model is otherwise viable. We also point out that R-parity violation can arise naturally in this context.

Partially Composite Higgs in Supersymmetry

We propose a framework for natural breaking of electroweak symmetry in supersymmetric models, where elementary Higgs fields are semi-perturbatively coupled to a strong superconformal sector. The Higgs VEVs break conformal symmetry in the strong sector at the TeV scale, and the strong sector in turn gives important contributions to the Higgs potential, giving rise to a kind of Higgs bootstrap. A Higgs with mass $125\GeV$ can be accommodated without any fine tuning. A Higgsino mass of order the Higgs mass is also dynamically generated in these models. The masses in the strong sector generically violate custodial symmetry, and a good precision electroweak fit requires tuning of order $\sim 10%$. The strong sector has an approximately supersymmetric spectrum of hadrons at the TeV scale that can be observed by looking for a peak in the $WZ$ invariant mass distribution, as well as final states containing multiple $W$, $Z$, and Higgs bosons. The models also generically predict large corrections (either enhancement or suppression) to the $h \to \ga\ga$ width.

Supersymmetry-Breaking Nonlinear Sigma Models

We consider a novel class of constraints on chiral superfields to obtain supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models in four spacetime dimensions, which strictly combine the internal symmetry breaking with spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. The resultant massless modes can be exclusively Nambu-Goldstone bosons without their complex partners and the goldstino that is charged under the internal symmetry. The massive modes show a peculiar relation among their masses and the scales of symmetry breakings.

(Extra)Ordinary Gauge/Anomaly Mediation

We study anomaly mediation models with gauge mediation effects from messengers which have a general renormalizable mass matrix with a supersymmetry-breaking spurion. Our models lead to a rich structure of supersymmetry breaking terms in the visible sector. We derive sum rules among the soft scalar masses for each generation. Our sum rules for the first and second generations are the same as those in general gauge mediation, but the sum rule for the third generation is different because of the top Yukawa coupling. We find the parameter space where the tachyonic slepton problem is solved. We also explore the case in which gauge mediation causes the anomalously small gaugino masses. Since anomaly mediation effects on the gaugino masses exist, we can obtain viable mass spectrum of the visible sector fields.

Comments on Gaugino Mass and Landscape of Vacua

In direct gauge mediation, gaugino masses often vanish at the leading order of supersymmetry breaking. Recently, this phenomenon is understood in connection with the global structure of vacua in O'Raifeartaigh-type models. In this note, we further explore a connection between gaugino masses and the landscape of vacua in more general situations, focusing on a few examples which demonstrate our idea. In particular, we present a calculable model with non-vanishing leading order gaugino masses on the lowest energy vacuum.

Higgs Portal to Visible Supersymmetry Breaking

We propose a supersymmetric extension of the standard model whose Higgs sector induces a spontaneous supersymmetry breaking by itself. Unlike the minimal extension, the current Higgs mass bound can be evaded even at the tree-level without the help of the soft breaking terms due to the usual hidden sector, as is reminiscent of the next to minimal case. We also have a possibly light pseudo-goldstino in our visible sector in addition to extra Higgs particles, both of which stem from supersymmetry breaking dynamics. In such a setup of visible supersymmetry breaking, we may see a part of supersymmetry breaking dynamics rather directly in future experiments.

Inflation and Gauge Mediation in Supersymmetric Gauge Theory

We propose a simple high-scale inflationary scenario based on a phenomenologically viable model with direct gauge mediation of low-scale supersymmetry breaking. Hybrid inflation is occurred in a hidden supersymmetry breaking sector. Two hierarchical mass scales to reconcile both high-scale inflation and gauge mediation are necessary for the stability of the metastable supersymmetry breaking vacuum. Our scenario is also natural in light of the Landau pole problem of direct gauge mediation.

Revisiting superparticle spectra in superconformal flavor models

We study superparticle spectra in the superconformal flavor scenario with non-universal gaugino masses. The non-universality of gaugino masses can lead to the wino-like or higgsino-like neutralino LSP. Furthermore, it is shown that the parameter space for the higgsino-like LSP includes the region where the fine-tuning problem can be improved. The degeneracy of soft scalar masses squared does not drastically change by taking ratios of gaugino masses of order one. The degeneracy of scalar masses for squarks and left-handed sleptons would be good to avoid the FCNC problem but that of right-handed slepton masses is weak. However, the overall size of right-handed slepton masses become larger when the bino becomes heavier. It is also pointed out that such region can be realized, and thus, that would be favorable to avoid the FCNC problem for soft scalar masses as well as A-terms.

Fine Tuning in General Gauge Mediation

We study the fine-tuning problem in the context of general gauge mediation. Numerical analyses toward for relaxing fine-tuning are presented. We analyse the problem in typical three cases of the messenger scale, that is, GUT ($2\times10^{16}$ GeV), intermediate ($10^{10}$ GeV), and relatively low energy ($10^6$ GeV) scales. In each messenger scale, the parameter space reducing the degree of tuning as around 10% is found. Certain ratios among gluino mass, wino mass and soft scalar masses are favorable. It is shown that the favorable region becomes narrow as the messenger scale becomes lower, and tachyonic initial conditions of stop masses at the messenger scale are favored to relax the fine-tuning problem for the relatively low energy messenger scale. Our spectra would also be important from the viewpoint of the $μ-B$ problem.
