The nonperturbative phase diagram of the bosonic BMN matrix model

We study the thermal phase transition of the bosonic BMN model which is a mass deformed version of the bosonic part of the BFSS model. Our results connect the massless region of the phase diagram described by the bosonic BFSS model with the large-mass region, where the model is analytically solvable. We observe that at finite value of the matrix size $N$, the critical region is smeared over a small temperature range. The model has a single critical temperature, which arises as the large $N$ limit of two apparent transitions at finite $N$. We emphasise the vital role played by finite $N$ corrections in the confined phase and illustrate this with a novel treatment of the noninteracting Gaussian model.

Spherically symmetric solutions of higher-spin gravity in the IKKT matrix model

We present a systematic study of spherically symmetric vacuum solutions of the IKKT matrix model, within the framework of semi-classical covariant quantum geometries. All asymptotically flat solutions of the equations of motion of the frame are found explicitly. They reproduce the linearized Schwarzschild geometry for large $r$ but deviate from it at the non-linear level, and include contributions from dilaton and axion. They are pertinent to the pre-gravity theory arising on classical brane solutions within the classical matrix model, before taking into account the Einstein-Hilbert term induced by quantum effects. We also address the problem of reconstructing matrix configurations corresponding to some given frame, and show that this problem can always be solved at the geometrical level of the underlying higher spin theory, ignoring possible higher spin modes.

Emergent Geometries from the BMN Matrix Model

We review recent results of emergent geometries in the BMN matrix model, a one-dimensional gauge theory considered as a non-perturbative formulation of M-theory on the plane-wave geometry. A key to understand the emergent geometries is the eigenvalue distribution of a BPS operator. Gauge-theory calculation shows that the BPS operator reproduces the corresponding supergravity solutions in the gauge/gravity duality and also brane geometries in the M-brane picture. At finite temperatures, these geometries should be realised in a non-trivial way. Monte Carlo simulations of this gauge theory revealed two types of phase transitions: the confinement/deconfinement transition and the Myers transition, which provide insights into the emergence of the geometries. Especially, the numerical results qualitatively agree with the critical temperature of the confinement/deconfinement transition predicted on the gravity side.

The Confining Transition in the Bosonic BMN Matrix Model

We study the confining/deconfining phase transition in the mass deformed Yang-Mills matrix model which is obtained by the dimensional reduction of the bosonic sector of the four-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory compactified on the three sphere, i.e. the bosonic BMN model. The $1/D$ (with $D$ the number of matrices) expansion suggests that the model may have two closely separated transitions. However, using a second order lattice formulation of the model we find that for the small value of the mass parameter, $μ=2$, those two apparent critical temperatures merge at large $N$, leaving only a single weakly first-order phase transition, in agreement with recent numerical results for $μ=0$ (the bosonic BFSS model).

Melnikov's method in String Theory

Melnikov's method is an analytical way to show the existence of classical chaos generated by a Smale horseshoe. It is a powerful technique, though its applicability is somewhat limited. In this paper, we present a solution of type IIB supergravity to which Melnikov's method is applicable. This is a brane-wave type deformation of the AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ background. By employing two reduction ansätze, we study two types of coupled pendulum-oscillator systems. Then the Melnikov function is computed for each of the systems by following the standard way of Holmes and Marsden and the existence of chaos is shown analytically.

Chaotic strings in a near Penrose limit of AdS$_5\times T^{1,1}$

We study chaotic motions of a classical string in a near Penrose limit of AdS$_5\times T^{1,1}$. It is known that chaotic solutions appear on $R\times T^{1,1}$, depending on initial conditions. It may be interesting to ask whether the chaos persists even in Penrose limits or not. In this paper, we show that sub-leading corrections in a Penrose limit provide an unstable separatrix, so that chaotic motions are generated as a consequence of collapsed Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) tori. Our analysis is based on deriving a reduced system composed of two degrees of freedom by supposing a winding string ansatz. Then, we provide support for the existence of chaos by computing Poincare sections. In comparison to the AdS$_5\times T^{1,1}$ case, we argue that no chaos lives in a near Penrose limit of AdS$_5\times$S$^5$, as expected from the classical integrability of the parent system.

Emergent bubbling geometries in gauge theories with SU(2|4) symmetry

We study the gauge/gravity duality between bubbling geometries in type IIA supergravity and gauge theories with SU(2|4) symmetry, which consist of N=4 super Yang-Mills on $R\times S^3/Z_k$, N=8 super Yang-Mills on $R\times S^2$ and the plane wave matrix model. We show that the geometries are realized as field configurations in the strong coupling region of the gauge theories. On the gravity side, the bubbling geometries can be mapped to electrostatic systems with conducting disks. We derive integral equations which determine the charge densities on the disks. On the gauge theory side, we obtain a matrix integral by applying the localization to a 1/4-BPS sector of the gauge theories. The eigenvalue densities of the matrix integral turn out to satisfy the same integral equations as the charge densities on the gravity side. Thus we find that these two objects are equivalent.

Emergent bubbling geometries in the plane wave matrix model

The gravity dual geometry of the plane wave matrix model is given by the bubbling geometry in the type IIA supergravity, which is described by an axially symmetric electrostatic system. We study a quarter BPS sector of the plane wave matrix model in terms of the localization method and show that this sector can be mapped to a one-dimensional interacting Fermi gas system. We find that the mean-field density of the Fermi gas can be identified with the charge density in the electrostatic system in the gravity side. We also find that the scaling limits in which the dual geometry reduces to the D2-brane or NS5-brane geometry are given as the free limit or the strongly coupled limit of the Fermi gas system, respectively. We reproduce the radii of $S^5$'s in these geometries by solving the Fermi gas model in the corresponding limits.

Exact results for perturbative partition functions of theories with SU(2|4) symmetry

In this paper, we study the theories with SU(2|4) symmetry which consist of the plane wave matrix model (PWMM), super Yang-Mills theory (SYM) on RxS^2 and SYM on RxS^3/Z_k. The last two theories can be realized as theories around particular vacua in PWMM, through the commutative limit of fuzzy sphere and Taylor's T-duality. We apply the localization method to PWMM to reduce the partition function and the expectation values of a class of supersymmetric operators to matrix integrals. By taking the commutative limit and performing the T-duality, we also obtain the matrix integrals for SYM on RxS^2 and SYM on RxS^3/Z_k. In this calculation, we ignore possible instanton effects and our matrix integrals describe the perturbative part exactly. In terms of the matrix integrals, we also provide a nonperturbative proof of the large-N reduction for circular Wilson loop operator and free energy in N=4 SYM on RxS^3.

Factorization of the Effective Action in the IIB Matrix Model

We study the low-energy effective action of the IIB matrix model in the derivative interpretation, where the diffeomorphism invariance is manifest and arbitrary manifolds are described by matrices. We show that it is expressed as a sum of terms, each of which is factorized into a product of diffeomorphism invariant action functionals: $S=\sum_{i}c_is_i+\sum_{i,j}c_{ij}s_is_j+\sum_{i,j,k}c_{ijk}s_is_js_k+\...$. Each action functional $s_i$ is an ordinary local action of the form $s_i=\int d^Dx\sqrt{-g} O_i(x)$, where $O_i(x)$ is a scalar operator. This is also true for the background consisting of block diagonal matrices. In this case, the effective action can be interpreted as describing a multiverse where the universes described by the blocks are connected by wormholes.

Large-N reduction for N=2 quiver Chern-Simons theories on S^3 and localization in matrix models

We study reduced matrix models obtained by the dimensional reduction of N=2 quiver Chern-Simons theories on S^3 to zero dimension and show that if a reduced model is expanded around a particular multiple fuzzy sphere background, it becomes equivalent to the original theory on S^3 in the large-N limit. This is regarded as a novel large-N reduction on a curved space S^3. We perform the localization method to the reduced model and compute the free energy and the vacuum expectation value of a BPS Wilson loop operator. In the large-N limit, we find an exact agreement between these results and those in the original theory on S^3.
