An uncontaminated measurement of the escaping Lyman continuum at $z\sim3$

Observations of reionization-era analogs at $z\sim3$ are a powerful tool for constraining reionization. Rest-ultraviolet observations are particularly useful, in which both direct and indirect tracers of ionizing-photon production and escape can be observed. We analyse a sample of 124 $z\sim3$ galaxies from the Keck Lyman Continuum Spectroscopic Survey, with sensitive spectroscopic measurements of the Lyman continuum (LyC) region. We present a method of removing foreground contamination from our sample using high-resolution, multiband Hubble Space Telescope imaging. We re-measure the global properties of the cleaned sample of 13 individually-detected LyC sources and 107 individually-undetected sources, including a sample-averaged absolute escape fraction of $f_{esc,abs}=0.06\pm0.01$ and a sample-averaged ratio of ionizing to non-ionizing ultraviolet flux density of $<f_{900}/f_{1500}>_{out}=0.040\pm0.006$, corrected for attenuation from the intergalactic and circumgalactic media. Based on composite spectra, we also recover a strong positive correlation between $<f_{900}/f_{1500}>_{out}$ and Ly$α$ equivalent width (W$_λ$(Ly$α$)) and a negative correlation between $<f_{900}/f_{1500}>_{out}$ and UV luminosity. As in previous work, we interpret the relationship between $<f_{900}/f_{1500}>_{out}$ and W$_λ$(Ly$α$) in terms of the modulation of the escape of ionizing radiation from star-forming galaxies based on the covering fraction of neutral gas. We also use a W$_λ$(Ly$α$)-weighted $<f_{900}/f_{1500}>_{out}$ to estimate an ionizing emissivity from star-forming galaxies at $z\sim3$ as $ε_{\rm LyC}\simeq5.5\times10^{24}$erg s$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-3}$. This estimate, evaluated using the uncontaminated sample of this work, affirms that the contribution of galaxies to the ionizing background at $z\sim3$ is comparable to that of active galactic nuclei.

Searching for the connection between ionizing-photon escape and the surface density of star formation at z~3

The connection between the escape fraction of ionizing photons ($f_{\rm esc}$) and star-formation rate surface density ($Σ_{\rm SFR}$) is a key input for reionization models, but remains untested at high redshift. We analyse 35 z~3 galaxies from the Keck Lyman Continuum Survey (KLCS) covered by deep, rest far-UV spectra of the Lyman continuum (LyC) and high-resolution HST V$_{606}$ imaging, enabling estimates of both $f_{\rm esc}$ and rest-UV sizes. Using Sérsic profile fits to HST images and spectral-energy distribution fits to multi-band photometry, we measure effective sizes and star-formation rates for the galaxies in our sample, and separate the sample into two bins of $Σ_{\rm SFR}$. Based on composite spectra, we estimate <$f_{\rm esc}$> for both $Σ_{\rm SFR}$ subsamples, finding no significant difference in <$f_{\rm esc}$> between the two. To test the representativeness of the KLCS HST sample and the robustness of this result, we attempt to recover the well-established correlation between $f_{\rm esc}$ and Ly$α$ equivalent width. This correlation is not significant within the KLCS HST sample, indicating that the sample is not sufficient for correlating $f_{\rm esc}$ and galaxy properties such as $Σ_{\rm SFR}$. We perform stacking simulations using the KLCS parent sample to determine the optimal sample size for robust probes of the $f_{\rm esc}$-$Σ_{\rm SFR}$ connection to inform future HST LyC observing programs. For a program with a selection independent of ionizing properties, >= 90 objects are required; for one preferentially observing strongly-leaking LyC sources, >= 58 objects are required. More generally, measuring the connection between $f_{\rm esc}$ and $Σ_{\rm SFR}$ requires a larger, representative sample spanning a wide dynamic range in galaxies properties such as $Σ_{\rm SFR}$.

Where Outflows Meet Inflows: Gas Kinematics in SSA22 Lyman-$α$ Blob 2 Decoded by Advanced Radiative Transfer Modelling

We present new spectroscopic observations of Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) Blob 2 ($z \sim$ 3.1). We observed extended Ly$α$ emission in three distinct regions, where the highest Ly$α$ surface brightness (SB) center is far away from the known continuum sources. We searched through the MOSFIRE slits that cover the high Ly$α$ SB regions, but were unable to detect any significant nebular emission near the highest SB center. We further mapped the flux ratio of the blue peak to the red peak and found it is anti-correlated with Ly$α$ SB with a power-law index of $\sim$ -0.4. We used radiative transfer models with both multiphase, clumpy and shell geometries and successfully reproduced the diverse Ly$α$ morphologies. We found that most spectra suggest outflow-dominated kinematics, while 4/15 spectra imply inflows. A significant correlation exists between parameter pairs, and the multiphase, clumpy model may alleviate previously reported discrepancies. We also modeled Ly$α$ spectra at different positions simultaneously and found that the variation of the inferred clump outflow velocities can be approximately explained by line-of-sight projection effects. Our results support the `central powering + scattering' scenario, i.e. the Ly$α$ photons are generated by a central powering source and then scatter with outflowing, multiphase HI gas while propagating outwards. The infalling of cool gas near the blob outskirts shapes the observed blue-dominated Ly$α$ profiles, but its energy contribution to the total Ly$α$ luminosity is less than 10%, i.e. minor compared to the photo-ionization by star-forming galaxies and/or AGNs.

Revisiting the Gas Kinematics in SSA22 Lyman-$α$ Blob 1 with Radiative Transfer Modeling in a Multiphase, Clumpy Medium

We present new observations of Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) Blob 1 (LAB1) in the SSA22 protocluster region ($z$ = 3.09) using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) and the Keck Multi-object Spectrometer for Infrared Exploration (MOSFIRE). By applying matched filtering to the KCWI datacube, we have created a narrow-band Ly$α$ image and identified several prominent features. By comparing the spatial distributions and intensities of Ly$α$ and H$β$, we find that recombination of photo-ionized HI gas followed by resonant scattering is sufficient to explain all the observed Ly$α$/H$β$ ratios. We further decode the spatially-resolved Ly$α$ profiles using both moment maps and Monte-Carlo radiative transfer (MCRT) modeling. By fitting a set of multiphase, 'clumpy' models to the observed Ly$α$ profiles, we are able to reasonably constrain many parameters, namely the HI number density in the inter-clump medium (ICM), the cloud volume filling factor, the random velocity and outflow velocity of the clumps, the HI outflow velocity of the ICM and the local systemic redshift. Our model has successfully reproduced the diverse Ly$α$ morphologies at different locations, and the main results are: (1) The observed Ly$α$ spectra require relatively few clumps per line-of-sight as they have significant fluxes at the line center; (2) The velocity dispersion of the clumps yields a significant broadening of the spectra as observed; (3) The clump bulk outflow can also cause additional broadening if the HI in the ICM is optically thick; (4) The HI in the ICM is responsible for the absorption feature close to the Ly$α$ line center.

Spin-Weyl quantum unit: theoretical proposal

We propose a four-state quantum system, or quantum unit, that can be realized in superconducting hetero-structures. The unit combines the states of a spin and an Andreev qubit providing the opportunity of quantum superpositions of their states. This functionality is achieved by tunnel coupling between a 4-terminal superconducting heterostucture housing a Weyl point, and a quantum dot. The quantum states in the vicinity of the Weyl point are extremely sensitive to small changes of superconducting phase, this gives reach opportunities for quantum manipulation. We establish an effective Hamiltonian for the setup and describe the peculiarities of the resulting spectrum. We concentrate on the 4-state subspace and explain how to make a double qubit in this setup. We review various ways to achieve quantum manipulation in the unit, this includes resonant, adiabatic, diabatic manipulation and combinations of those. We provide detailed illustrations of designing arbitrary quantum gates in the unit.

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping Project: Photometric g and i Light Curves

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping (SDSS-RM) program monitors 849 active galactic nuclei (AGN) both spectroscopically and photometrically. The photometric observations used in this work span over four years and provide an excellent baseline for variability studies of these objects. We present the photometric light curves from 2014 to 2017 obtained by the Steward Observatory's Bok telescope and the CFHT telescope with MegaCam. We provide details on the data acquisition and processing of the data from each telescope, the difference imaging photometry used to produce the light curves, and the calculation of a variability index to quantify each AGN's variability. We find that the Welch-Stetson J-index provides a useful characterization of AGN variability and can be used to select AGNs for further study.

Predicting Ly$α$ Emission from Galaxies via Empirical Markers of Production and Escape in the KBSS

Ly$α$ emission is widely used to detect and confirm high-redshift galaxies and characterize the evolution of the intergalactic medium. However, many galaxies do not display Ly$α$ emission in typical spectroscopic observations, and intrinsic Ly$α$-emitters represent a potentially biased set of high-redshift galaxies. In this work, we analyze a set of 703 galaxies at $2\lesssim z\lesssim3$ with both Ly$α$ spectroscopy and measurements of other rest-frame ultraviolet and optical properties in order to develop an empirical model for Ly$α$ emission from galaxies and understand how the probability of Ly$α$ emission depends on other observables. We consider several empirical proxies for the efficiency of Ly$α$ photon production as well as the subsequent escape of these photons through their local interstellar medium. We find that the equivalent width of metal-line absorption and the O3 ratio of rest-frame optical nebular lines are advantageous empirical proxies for Ly$α$ escape and production, respectively. We develop a new quantity, $X_\mathrm{LIS}^\mathrm{O3}$, that combines these two properties into a single predictor of net Ly$α$ emission, which we find describes $\sim$90% of the observed variance in Ly$α$ equivalent width when accounting for our observational uncertainties. We also construct conditional probability distributions demonstrating that galaxy selection based on measurements of galaxy properties yield samples of galaxies with widely varying probabilities of net Ly$α$ emission. The application of the empirical models and probability distributions described here may be used to infer the selection biases of current galaxy surveys and evaluate the significance of high-redshift Ly$α$ (non-)detections in studies of reionization and the intergalactic medium.

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping Project: Initial CIV Lag Results from Four Years of Data

We present reverberation-mapping lags and black-hole mass measurements using the CIV 1549 broad emission line from a sample of 349 quasars monitored as a part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping Project. Our data span four years of spectroscopic and photometric monitoring for a total baseline of 1300 days. We report significant time delays between the continuum and the CIV 1549 emission line in 52 quasars, with an estimated false-positive detection rate of 10%. Our analysis of marginal lag measurements indicates that there are on the order of 100 additional lags that should be recoverable by adding more years of data from the program. We use our measurements to calculate black-hole masses and fit an updated CIV radius-luminosity relationship. Our results significantly increase the sample of quasars with CIV RM results, with the quasars spanning two orders of magnitude in luminosity toward the high-luminosity end of the CIV radius-luminosity relation. In addition, these quasars are located at among the highest redshifts (z~1.4-2.8) of quasars with black hole masses measured with reverberation mapping. This work constitutes the first large sample of CIV reverberation-mapping measurements in more than a dozen quasars, demonstrating the utility of multi-object reverberation mapping campaigns.

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping Project: Rapid CIV Broad Absorption Line Variability

We report the discovery of rapid variations of a high-velocity CIV broad absorption line trough in the quasar SDSS J141007.74+541203.3. This object was intensively observed in 2014 as a part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping Project, during which 32 epochs of spectroscopy were obtained with the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey spectrograph. We observe significant (>4sigma) variability in the equivalent width of the broad (~4000 km/s wide) CIV trough on rest-frame timescales as short as 1.20 days (~29 hours), the shortest broad absorption line variability timescale yet reported. The equivalent width varied by ~10% on these short timescales, and by about a factor of two over the duration of the campaign. We evaluate several potential causes of the variability, concluding that the most likely cause is a rapid response to changes in the incident ionizing continuum. If the outflow is at a radius where the recombination rate is higher than the ionization rate, the timescale of variability places a lower limit on the density of the absorbing gas of n_e > 3.9 x 10^5 cm^-3. The broad absorption line variability characteristics of this quasar are consistent with those observed in previous studies of quasars, indicating that such short-term variability may in fact be common and thus can be used to learn about outflow characteristics and contributions to quasar/host-galaxy feedback scenarios.

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping Project: Technical Overview

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping project (SDSS-RM) is a dedicated multi-object RM experiment that has spectroscopically monitored a sample of 849 broad-line quasars in a single 7 deg$^2$ field with the SDSS-III BOSS spectrograph. The RM quasar sample is flux-limited to i_psf=21.7 mag, and covers a redshift range of 0.1<z<4.5. Optical spectroscopy was performed during 2014 Jan-Jul dark/grey time, with an average cadence of ~4 days, totaling more than 30 epochs. Supporting photometric monitoring in the g and i bands was conducted at multiple facilities including the CFHT and the Steward Observatory Bok telescopes in 2014, with a cadence of ~2 days and covering all lunar phases. The RM field (RA, DEC=14:14:49.00, +53:05:00.0) lies within the CFHT-LS W3 field, and coincides with the Pan-STARRS 1 (PS1) Medium Deep Field MD07, with three prior years of multi-band PS1 light curves. The SDSS-RM 6-month baseline program aims to detect time lags between the quasar continuum and broad line region (BLR) variability on timescales of up to several months (in the observed frame) for ~10% of the sample, and to anchor the time baseline for continued monitoring in the future to detect lags on longer timescales and at higher redshift. SDSS-RM is the first major program to systematically explore the potential of RM for broad-line quasars at z>0.3, and will investigate the prospects of RM with all major broad lines covered in optical spectroscopy. SDSS-RM will provide guidance on future multi-object RM campaigns on larger scales, and is aiming to deliver more than tens of BLR lag detections for a homogeneous sample of quasars. We describe the motivation, design and implementation of this program, and outline the science impact expected from the resulting data for RM and general quasar science.

Spin polarization direction switch based on an asymmetrical quantum wire

A scheme for a spin polarization direction switch is investigated by studying the spin-dependent electron transport of an asymmetrical quantum wire (QW) with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC). It is found that the magnitude of the spin-polarized current in the backward biased case is equal to it in the forward biased case but their signs are contrary. This results indicate that the spin polarization direction can be switched by changing the direction of the external current. The physical mechanism of this device may arise from the symmetries in the longitudinal and transverse directions are broken but $C_2$-rotation and time-reversal symmetries are still reserved. Further studies show that the spin polarization is robust against disorder, displaying the feasibility of the proposed structure for a potential application.

Spin-polarized current separator based on a fork-shaped Rashba nanostructure

A scheme for a spin-polarized current separator is proposed by studying the spin-dependent electron transport of a fork-shaped nanostructure with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC), connected to three leads with the same width. It is found that two spin-polarized currents are of the same magnitude but opposite polarizations can be generated simultaneously in the two output leads when the spin-unpolarized electrons injected from the input lead. The underlying physics is revealed to originate from the different spin-dependent conductance caused by the effects of Rashba SOC and the geometrical structure of the system. Further study shows that the spin-polarized current with strong a robustness against disorder, demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed nanostructure for a real application.

Spin Filtering in a Nonuniform Quantum Wire with Rashba Spin-Orbit Interaction

We investigate theoretically the spin-polarized electron transport for a wide-narrow-wide (WNW) quantum wire under the modulation of Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI). The influence of both the structure of the quantum wire and the interference between different pairs of subbands on the spin-polarized electron transport is taken into account simultaneously via the spin-resolved lattice Green function method. It is found that a very large vertical spin-polarized current can be generated by the SOI-induced effective magnetic field at the structure-induced Fano resonance even in the presence of strong disorder. Furthermore, the magnitude of the spin polarization can be tuned by both the Rashba SOI strength and structural parameters. Our results may provide an effective way to design a spin filter device without containing any magnetic materials or applying a magnetic field.

Spin polarization control by electric means: proposal for a spin diode

A scheme of spin diode is proposed that uses a step-like quantum wire with Rashba spin-orbit interaction, connected to two leads with different width. It is shown that a very large vertical spin-polarized current can be generated when electrons transmit from the narrow lead to the wide lead, however, it vanishes or becomes very weak when the transport direction is reversed. This difference is revealed to arise from the different local density of electron states of the quantum wire, which is dependent on the direction of bias. The spin-polarized current in the proposed structure can be generated and manipulated by purely electric means and with strong a robustness against disorder, displaying the feasibility of this structure for a real application.
