Continuum field theory for the deformations of planar kirigami

Mechanical metamaterials exhibit exotic properties at the system level, that emerge from the interactions of many nearly rigid building blocks. Determining these emergent properties theoretically has remained an open challenge outside of a few select examples. Here, for a large class of periodic and planar kirigami, we provide a coarse-graining rule linking the design of the panels and slits to the kirigami's macroscale deformations. The procedure gives a system of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE) expressing geometric compatibility of angle functions related to the motion of individual slits. Leveraging known solutions of the PDE, we present excellent agreement between simulations and experiments across kirigami designs. The results reveal a surprising nonlinear wave-type response persisting even at large boundary loads, the existence of which is determined completely by the Poisson's ratio of the unit cell.

The clamped intensity of femtosecond laser pulses varying with gas pressure in the presence of external focusing

We perform a theoretical investigation of the clamped laser intensity inside the filament plasma as a function of gas pressure with external focusing. Unlike the clamped intensity under the selffocusing condition, which is independent on the gas pressure, the clamped intensity with external focusing decreases with the gas pressure. Our findings can explain the changes of the signals of femtosecond-laser-induced 391-nm forward emission and fluorescence with the nitrogen gas pressure.

Phonon heat conduction in Al1-xScxN thin films

Aluminum scandium nitride alloy (Al1-xScxN) is regarded as a promising material for high-performance acoustic devices used in wireless communication systems. Phonon scattering and heat conduction processes govern the energy dissipation in acoustic resonators, ultimately determining their performance quality. This work reports, for the first time, on phonon scattering processes and thermal conductivity in Al1-xScxN alloys with the Sc content (x) up to 0.26. The thermal conductivity measured presents a descending trend with increasing x. Temperature-dependent measurements show an increase in thermal conductivity as the temperature increases at temperatures below 200K, followed by a plateau at higher temperatures (T> 200K). Application of a virtual crystal phonon conduction model allows us to elucidate the effects of boundary and alloy scattering on the observed thermal conductivity behaviors. We further demonstrate that the alloy scattering is caused mainly by strain-field difference, and less by the atomic mass difference between ScN and AlN, which is in contrast to the well-studied Al1-xGaxN and SixGe1-x alloy systems where atomic mass difference dominates the alloy scattering. This work studies and provides the quantitative knowledge for phonon scattering and the thermal conductivity in Al1-xScxN, paving the way for future investigation of materials and design of acoustic devices.

Ultrafast ratchet dynamics of skyrmion by defect engineering under gigahertz magnetic fields

The novel ratchet motion of magnetic skyrmions driven by microwave magnetic fields, with the motion direction and speed tunable by field parameters, provides a promising route to drive magnetic skyrmions in materials with poor conductivity. However, as an indirect motion, skyrmion ratchet motion speed is generally low in comparison with the direct motions driven by current. Toward practical applications, it is important to ask if there are mechanisms to realize ultrafast ratchet motion of magnetic skyrmions and how such novel motion can be integrated into racetrack-type skyrmion devices. In this work, we explore the effects of defects and edges on the ratchet motion of magnetic skyrmions under time-varying magnetic fields in GHz. We demonstrate that the ratchet motion of skyrmion is not only guided along the defect tracks or edges, but also with a remarkable speed-up (with a factor over ten) compared with that in the bulk region. The skyrmion ratchet motion speed reaches 100 m/s along a straight defect track/edge and 10^9 rad/s along a circular edge under a field of ~50 mT, comparable to those direct motions driven by currents. Moreover, the skyrmion ratchet motion along the defect track/edge can be facilely controlled by the field and defect parameters. Analysis based on time-averaged Thiele equation of skyrmion verifies that such a speed-up effect is due to the increased time-averaged driving force perpendicular to the skyrmion motion when it approaches the defect track or edge, analogous to that discovered in direct motions driven by currents.

Transitionless-based shortcuts for rapidly generating two-atom 3D entanglement

An experimentally feasible scheme is proposed for rapidly generating two-atom three-dimensional (3D) entanglement with one step. As one technique of shortcuts to adiabaticity, transitionless quantum driving is applied to speed up the adiabatic generation of two-atom 3D entanglement. Apart from the rapid rate, the scheme has much higher experimental feasibility than the recent research (Quant. Inf. Process. DOI: 10.1007/s11128-016-1453-2, 2016). Besides, numerical simulations indicate the scheme has strong robustness against parameter deviations and decoherence.
