Joint Offloading and Resource Allocation for Hybrid Cloud and Edge Computing in SAGINs: A Decision Assisted Hybrid Action Space Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach

In recent years, the amalgamation of satellite communications and aerial platforms into space-air-ground integrated network (SAGINs) has emerged as an indispensable area of research for future communications due to the global coverage capacity of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites and the flexible Deployment of aerial platforms. This paper presents a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based approach for the joint optimization of offloading and resource allocation in hybrid cloud and multi-access edge computing (MEC) scenarios within SAGINs. The proposed system considers the presence of multiple satellites, clouds and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The multiple tasks from ground users are modeled as directed acyclic graphs (DAGs). With the goal of reducing energy consumption and latency in MEC, we propose a novel multi-agent algorithm based on DRL that optimizes both the offloading strategy and the allocation of resources in the MEC infrastructure within SAGIN. A hybrid action algorithm is utilized to address the challenge of hybrid continuous and discrete action space in the proposed problems, and a decision-assisted DRL method is adopted to reduce the impact of unavailable actions in the training process of DRL. Through extensive simulations, the results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed learning-based scheme, the proposed approach consistently outperforms benchmark schemes, highlighting its superior performance and potential for practical applications.

Lalaine: Measuring and Characterizing Non-Compliance of Apple Privacy Labels at Scale

As a key supplement to privacy policies that are known to be lengthy and difficult to read, Apple has launched the app privacy labels, which purportedly help users more easily understand an app's privacy practices. However, false and misleading privacy labels can dupe privacy-conscious consumers into downloading data-intensive apps, ultimately eroding the credibility and integrity of the labels. Although Apple releases requirements and guidelines for app developers to create privacy labels, little is known about whether and to what extent the privacy labels in the wild are correct and compliant, reflecting the actual data practices of iOS apps. This paper presents the first systematic study, based on our new methodology named Lalaine, to evaluate data-flow to privacy-label (flow-to-label) consistency. Lalaine analyzed the privacy labels and binaries of 5,102 iOS apps, shedding light on the prevalence and seriousness of privacy-label non-compliance. We provide detailed case studies and analyze root causes for privacy label non-compliance that complements prior understandings. This has led to new insights for improving privacy-label design and compliance requirements, so app developers, platform stakeholders, and policy-makers can better achieve their privacy and accountability goals. Lalaine is thoroughly evaluated for its high effectiveness and efficiency. We are responsibly reporting the results to stakeholders.

Learning Efficient Representations for Enhanced Object Detection on Large-scene SAR Images

It is a challenging problem to detect and recognize targets on complex large-scene Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. Recently developed deep learning algorithms can automatically learn the intrinsic features of SAR images, but still have much room for improvement on large-scene SAR images with limited data. In this paper, based on learning representations and multi-scale features of SAR images, we propose an efficient and robust deep learning based target detection method. Especially, by leveraging the effectiveness of adversarial autoencoder (AAE) which influences the distribution of the investigated data explicitly, the raw SAR dataset is augmented into an enhanced version with a large quantity and diversity. Besides, an auto-labeling scheme is proposed to improve labeling efficiency. Finally, with jointly training small target chips and large-scene images, an integrated YOLO network combining non-maximum suppression on sub-images is used to realize multiple targets detection of high resolution images. The numerical experimental results on the MSTAR dataset show that our method can realize target detection and recognition on large-scene images accurately and efficiently. The superior anti-noise performance is also confirmed by experiments.

A Stackelberg Game Approach to Resource Allocation for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided Communications

It is known that the capacity of the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided cellular network can be effectively improved by reflecting the incident signals from the transmitter in a low-cost passive reflecting way. In this paper, we study the adoption of an IRS for downlink multi-user communication from a multi-antenna base station (BS). Nevertheless, in the actual network operation, the IRS operator can be selfish or have its own objectives due to competing/limited resources as well as deployment/maintenance cost. Therefore, in this paper, we develop a Stackelbeg game model to analyze the interaction between the BS and the IRS operator. Specifically, different from the existing studies on IRS that merely focus on tuning the reflection coefficient of all the reflection elements, we consider the reflection resource (elements) management, which can be realized via trigger module selection under our proposed IRS architecture that all the reflection elements are partially controlled by independent switches of controller. A Stackelberg game-based alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is proposed to jointly optimize the transmit beamforming at the BS and the passive beamforming of the triggered reflection modules. Numerical examples are presented to verify the proposed studies. It is shown that the proposed scheme is effective in the utilities of both the BS and IRS.

Fully Decentralized Federated Learning Based Beamforming Design for UAV Communications

To handle the data explosion in the era of internet of things (IoT), it is of interest to investigate the decentralized network, with the aim at relaxing the burden to central server along with keeping data privacy. In this work, we develop a fully decentralized federated learning (FL) framework with an inexact stochastic parallel random walk alternating direction method of multipliers (ISPW-ADMM). Performing more communication efficient and enhanced privacy preservation compared with the current state-of-the-art, the proposed ISPW-ADMM can be partially immune to the impacts from time-varying dynamic network and stochastic data collection, while still in fast convergence. Benefits from the stochastic gradients and biased first-order moment estimation, the proposed framework can be applied to any decentralized FL tasks over time-varying graphs. Thus to further demonstrate the practicability of such framework in providing fast convergence, high communication efficiency, and system robustness, we study the extreme learning machine(ELM)-based FL model for robust beamforming (BF) design in UAV communications, as verified by the numerical simulations.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface for MISO Systems with Proportional Rate Constraints

This paper investigates the system spectral efficiency (SE) in reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems, where RIS can reconfigure the propagation environment via a large number of controllable and intelligent phase shifters. In order to explore the system SE performance behavior with user proportional fairness for such a system, an optimization problem is formulated to maximize the SE by jointly considering the power allocation at the base station (BS) and phase shift at the RIS, under nonlinear proportional rate fairness constraints. To solve the nonconvex optimization problem, an effective solution is developed, which capitalizes on an iterative algorithm with closed-form expressions, i.e., alternatively optimizing the transmit power at the BS and the reflecting phase shift at the RIS. Numerical simulations are provided to validate the theoretical analysis and assess the performance of the proposed alternative algorithm.

Two-Step Modification of Phonon Mean Free Paths for Thermal Conductivity Predictions of Thin-Film-Based Nanostructures

As one simple metamaterial, nanopatterns are often fabricated across a thin film so that the thermal transport can be manipulated. The etched sidewalls for these nanostructures are usually rough due to surface defects introduced during the nanofabrication, whereas the top and bottom film surfaces are smoother. In existing analytical models, the contrast between these surfaces has not been addressed and all boundaries are assumed to be diffusive for phonon reflection. In this paper, a new two-step approach to address this issue is proposed for phonon transport modeling of general thin-film-based structures. In this approach, the effective in-plane phonon mean free paths (Λ_Film) are first modified from the bulk phonon MFPs to account for the influence of the top/bottom film surfaces, with possibly enhanced probability of specular phonon reflection at cryogenic temperatures. This Λ_Film is further modified to include the scattering by etched sidewalls with almost completely diffusive phonon scattering. Such a two-step phonon mean free path modification yields almost identical results as frequency-dependent phonon Monte Carlo simulations for etched nanowires and representative nanoporous thin films. This simple yet accurate analytical model can be applied to general thin-film-based nanostructures to combine the phonon size effects along orthogonal directions.

A Class of Low-Interference N-Continuous OFDM Schemes

N-continuous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM) was demonstrated to provide significant sidelobe suppression for baseband OFDM signals. However, it will introduce severe interference to the transmit signals. Hence in this letter, we specifically design a class of low-interference NC-OFDM schemes for alleviating the introduced interference. Meanwhile, we also obtain an asymptotic spectrum analysis by a closed-form expression. It is shown that the proposed scheme is capable of reducing the interference to a negligible level, and hence to save the high complexity of signal recovery at the receiver, while maintaining similar sidelobe suppression performance compared to traditional NC-OFDM.

Improved N-continuous OFDM for 5G Wireless Communications

N-continuous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM) is a promising technique to obtain significant sidelobe suppression for baseband OFDM signals, in future 5G wireless communications. However, the precoder of NC-OFDM usually causes severe interference and high complexity. To reduce the interference and complexity, this paper proposes an improved time-domain N-continuous OFDM (TD-NC-OFDM) by shortening the smooth signal, which is linearly combined by rectangularly pulsed OFDM basis signals truncated by a smooth window. Furthermore, we obtain an asymptotic spectrum analysis of the TD-NC-OFDM signals by a closed-form expression, calculate its low complexity in OFDM transceiver, and derive a closed-form expression of the received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). Simulation results show that the proposed low-interference TD-NC-OFDM can achieve similar suppression performance but introduce negligible bit error rate (BER) degradation and much lower computational complexity, compared to conventional NC-OFDM.

N-continuous OFDM: System Optimization and Performance Analysis

N-continuous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM) is a promising technique to achieve significant sidelobe suppression of baseband OFDM signals. However, the high complexity limits its application. Based on conventional NC-OFDM, in this paper, a new technique, called time-domain N-continuous OFDM (TD-NC-OFDM), is proposed to transfer the original frequency-domain processing to the time domain, by the linear combination of a novel basis set to smooth the consecutive OFDM symbols and their high-order derivatives. We prove that TD-NC-OFDM is an equivalent to conventional one while consuming much lower complexity. Furthermore, via the time-domain structure, a closed-form spectral expression of NC-OFDM signals is derived and a compact upper bound of sidelobe decaying is derived. This paper also investigates the impact of the TD-NC-OFDM technique on received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and provides a closed-form analytical expression. Theoretical analyses and simulation results show that TD-NC-OFDM can prohibitively suppress the sidelobe with much lower complexity.

Improved Peak Cancellation for PAPR Reduction in OFDM Systems

This letter presents an improved peak cancellation (PC) scheme for peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The main idea is based on a serial peak cancellation (SPC) mode for alleviating the peak regrowth of the conventional schemes. Based on the SPC mode, two particular algorithms are developed with different tradeoff between PAPR and computational complexity. Simulation shows that the proposed scheme has a better tradeoff among PAPR, complexity and signal distortion than the conventional schemes.
