On massive higher spins and gravity. III. Spin 7/2

In this paper, we extend our previous results on the gravitational interactions for massive spin 5/2 particles and spin 3 particles to massive spin 7/2, including its massless and partially massless limits. These results share some common features, such as a non-singular massless limit in $AdS$ and a flat limit for non-zero masses, as well as a singularity at the points corresponding to the boundary of the unitary forbidden region. At the same time, these results allow us to suggest what the structure of non-minimal interactions for arbitrary spins looks like. Another subject of interest is the Skvortsov-Vasiliev formalism for describing partially massless fields. This formalism has been very useful in our research, but our examples have shown that it dos not always lead to the correct results.

On massive higher spins in d=3

In this paper we consider a frame-like gauge invariant description of massive higher spin bosons and fermions in d=3 and provide for the first time a proof that such formulation does describe just one massive physical degree of freedom with the appropriate helicity. For this purpose we completely fix all the gauge symmetries and show that all other auxiliary components vanish on-shell, while the only remaining highest component satisfies the correct equations. As a bonus, we show that the Lagrangians for the so-called self-dual massive spin-3 and spin-4 fields proposed by Aragone and Khoudeir (as well as their generalization to arbitrary integer and half-integer spins) can be obtained from the gauge invariant ones by the appropriate gauge fixing.

Massless higher spin cubic vertices in flat four dimmensional space

In this paper we construct a number of cubic interaction vertices for massless bosonic and fermionic higher spin fields in flat four dimensional space. First of all, we construct these cubic vertices in AdS_4 space using a so-called Fradkin-Vasiliev approach, which works only for the non-zero cosmological constant. Then we consider a flat limit taking care on all the higher derivative terms which FV-approach generates. We restrict ourselves with the four dimensions because this allows us to use the frame-like multispinor formalism which greatly simplifies all calculations and provides a description for bosons and fermions on equal footing.

Towards the Fradkin-Vasiliev formalism in three dimensions

In this paper we show that using frame-like gauge invariant formulation for the massive bosonic and fermionic fields in three dimensions the free Lagrangians for these fields can be rewritten in the explicitly gauge invariant form in terms of the appropriately chosen set of gauge invariant objects. This in turn opens the possibility to apply the Fradkin-Vasiliev formalism to the investigation of possible interactions of such fields.

Unfolded equations for massive higher spin supermultiplets in AdS_3

In this paper we give an explicit construction of unfolded equations for massive higher spin supermultiplets of the minimal (1,0) supersymmetry in AdS_3 space. For that purpose we use an unfolded formulation for massive bosonic and fermionic higher spins and find supertransformations leaving appropriate set of unfolded equations invariant. We provide two general supermultiplets (s, s+1/2) and (s, s-1/2) with arbitrary integer s, as well as a number of lower spin examples.

Lagrangian formulation of the massive higher spin supermultiplets in three dimensional space-time

We give explicit construction for massive higher spin supermultiplets for the case of minimal supersymmetry in d=3 and find the corresponding Lagrangian formulations. We show that all such massive supermultiplets can be straightforwardly constructed out of the appropriately chosen set of massless ones exactly in the same way as the gauge invariant description for the massive bosonic (fermionic) field with spin s can be obtained using a set of massless fields with spins s,s-1,...,0(1/2). Moreover, such construction for the massive supermultiplets turns out to be perfectly consistent with our previous results on the gauge invariant Lagrangian formulation for massive higher spin bosons and fermions in d=3.

Massive higher spins in d=3 unfolded

In this paper we construct an unfolded formulation for the massive bosonic higher spins in three dimensions as well as for their partially massless limit of the maximal depth. We begin with the equations for the one-forms coming from the frame-like gauge invariant Lagrangians for such fields and then we supplement them with the infinite number of equations for the appropriately chosen set of zero-forms.

Formalism of gauge invariant curvatures and constructing the cubic vertices for massive spin-3/2 field in AdS_4 space

We study the interaction of massive spin-3/2 field with electromagnetic and gravitational fields in the four dimensional AdS space and construct the corresponding cubic vertices. Construction is based on generalization of Fradkin-Vasiliev formalism, developed for massless higher spin fields, to massive fermionic higher spin fields. The main ingredients of this formalism are the gauge invariant curvatures. We build such curvatures for the massive theory under consideration and show how the cubic vertices are written in their terms.

Frame-like gauge invariant Lagrangian formulation of massive fermionic higher spin fields in AdS_3 space

We construct the frame-like gauge-invariant Lagrangian formulation for massive fermionic arbitrary spin fields in three-dimensional $AdS$ space. The Lagrangian and complete set of gauge transformations are obtained. We also develop the formalism of gauge-invariant curvatures for the massive theory under consideration and show how the Lagrangian is formulated in their terms. The massive spin-5/2 field is discussed as an example.

Hypergravity in AdS_3

Thirty years ago Aragone and Deser showed that in three dimensions there exists a consistent model describing interaction for massless spin-2 and spin-5/2 fields. It was crucial that these fields lived in a flat Minkowski space and as a result it was not possible to deform such model into anti-de Sitter space. In this short note we show that such deformation becomes possible provided one compliment to the model with massless spin-4 field. Resulting theory can be considered as a Chern-Simons one with a well-known supergroup OSp(1,4). Moreover there exists straightforward generalization to the OSp(1,2n) case containing a number of bosonic fields with even spins 2,4,...,2n and one fermionic field with spin n+1/2.

All spin-2 cubic vertices with two derivatives

In this paper we provide a complete list of spin-2 cubic interaction vertices with two derivatives. We work in (anti) de Sitter space with dimension d >= 4 and arbitrary value of cosmological constant and use simple metric formalism without any auxiliary or Stueckelberg fields. We separately consider cases with one, two and three different spin-2 fields entering the vertex where each field may be massive, massless or partially massless one. The connection of our results with massive (bi)gravity theories is also briefly discussed.

Cubic interaction vertex of higher-spin fields with external electromagnetic field

We fulfill the detailed analysis of coupling the charged bosonic higher spin fields to external constant electromagnetic field in first order in external field strength. Cubic interaction vertex of arbitrary massive and massless bosonic higher spin fields with external field is found. Construction is based on deformation of free Lagrangian and free gauge transformations by terms linear in electromagnetic field strength. In massive case a formulation with Stueckelberg fields is used. We begin with most general form of deformations for Lagrangian and gauge transformations, admissible by Lorentz covariance and gauge invariance and containing some number of arbitrary coefficients, and require the gauge invariance of the deformed theory in first order in strength. It yields the equations for the coefficients which are exactly solved. As a result, the complete interacting Lagrangian of arbitrary bosonic higher spin fields with constant electromagnetic field in first order in electromagnetic strength is obtained. Causality of massive spin-2 and spin-3 fields propagation in the corresponding electromagnetic background is proved.

Gauge invariant Lagrangian formulation of massive higher spin fields in (A)dS_3 space

We develop the frame-like formulation of massive bosonic higher spins fields in the case of 3-dimensional $(A)dS$ space with the arbitrary cosmological constant. The formulation is based on gauge-invariant description by involving the Stueckelberg auxiliary fields. The explicit form of the Lagrangians and the gauge transformation laws are found. The theory can be written in terms of gauge-invariant objects similar to the massless theories, thus allowing us to hope to use the same methods for investigation of interactions. In the massive spin 3 field example we are able to rewrite the Lagrangian using the new the so-called separated variables, so that the study of Lagrangian formulation reduces to finding the Lagrangian containing only half of the fields. The same construction takes places for arbitrary integer spin field as well. Further working in terms of separated variables, we build Lagrangian for arbitrary integer spin and write it in terms of gauge-invariant objects. Also, we demonstrate how to restore the full set of variables, thus receiving Lagrangian for the massive fields of arbitrary spin in the terms of initial fields.

On gravitational interactions for massive higher spins in $AdS_3$

In this paper we investigate gravitational interactions of massive higher spin fields in three dimensional $AdS$ space with arbitrary value of cosmological constant including flat Minkowski space. We use frame-like gauge description for such massive fields adopted to three-dimensional case. At first, we carefully analyze the procedure of switching on gravitational interactions in the linear approximation on the example of massive spin-3 field and then proceed with the generalization to the case of arbitrary integer spin field. As a result we construct a cubic interaction vertex linear in spin-2 field and quadratic in higher spin field on $AdS_3$ background. As in the massless case the vertex does not contain any higher derivative corrections to the Lagrangian and/or gauge transformations. Thus, even after switching on gravitational interactions, one can freely consider any massless or partially massless limits as well as the flat one.

On massive gravity and bigravity in three dimensions

In this paper we investigate possible consistent ghost-free models containing massive spin 2 particles in three dimensions. We work in a constructive approach based on the frame-like gauge invariant description for such massive spin 2 particles. We provide the most general form of linear approximations, i.e. cubic vertices in the Lagrangian and linear in fields corrections to gauge transformations. As for the possibility to go beyond the linear approximation, we show that there exists at least one solution that admits non-singular massless limit and that corresponds to a so called "New massive gravity".

Gravitational cubic interactions for a massive mixed symmetry gauge field

In a recent paper arXiv:1107.1872 cubic gravitational interactions for a massless mixed symmetry field in AdS space have been constructed. In the current paper we extend these results to the case of massive field. We work in a Fradkin-Vasiliev approach and use frame-like gauge invariant description for massive field which works in (A)dS spaces with arbitrary values of cosmological constant including flat Minkowski space. In this, massless limit in AdS space coincides with the results of arXiv:1107.1872 while we show that it is impossible to switch on gravitational interaction for massless field in dS space.

Gravitational cubic interactions for a simple mixed-symmetry gauge field in AdS and flat backgrounds

Cubic interactions between the simplest mixed-symmetry gauge field and gravity are constructed in anti-de Sitter (AdS) and flat backgrounds. Nonabelian cubic interactions are obtained in AdS following various perturbative methods including the Fradkin-Vasiliev construction, with and without Stueckelberg fields. The action that features the maximal number of Stueckelberg fields can be considered in the flat limit without loss of physical degrees of freedom. The resulting interactions in flat space are compared with a classification of vertices obtained via the antifield cohomological perturbative method. It is shown that the gauge algebra becomes abelian in the flat limit, in contrast to what happens for totally symmetric gauge fields in AdS.

On electromagnetic interactions for massive mixed symmetry field

In this paper we investigate electromagnetic interactions for simplest massive mixed symmetry field. Using frame-like gauge invariant formulation we extend Fradkin-Vasiliev procedure, initially proposed for investigation of gravitational interactions for massless particles in AdS space, to the case of electromagnetic interactions for massive particles leaving in (A)dS space with arbitrary value of cosmological constant including flat Minkowski space. At first, as an illustration of general procedure, we re-derive our previous results on massive spin 2 electromagnetic interactions and then we apply this procedure to massive mixed symmetry field. These two cases are just the simplest representatives of two general class of fields, namely completely symmetric and mixed symmetry ones, and it is clear that the results obtained admit straightforward generalization to higher spins as well.

Spin 3 cubic vertices in a frame-like formalism

Till now most of the results on interaction vertices for massless higher spin fields were obtained in a metric-like formalism using completely symmetric (spin-)tensors. In this, the Lagrangians turn out to be very complicated and the main reason is that the higher the spin one want to consider the more derivatives one has to introduce. In this paper we show that such investigations can be greatly simplified if one works in a frame-like formalism. As an illustration we consider massless spin 3 particle and reconstruct a number of vertices describing its interactions with lower spin 2, 1 and 0 ones. In all cases considered we give explicit expressions for the Lagrangians and gauge transformations and check that the algebra of gauge transformations is indeed closed.

Massive supermultiplets with spin 3/2

In this paper we construct massive supermultiplets out of appropriate set of massless ones in the same way as massive spin s particle could be constructed out of massless spin s,s-1,... ones leading to gauge invariant description of massive particle. Mainly we consider massive spin 3/2 supermultiplets in a flat d=4 Minkowski space both without central charge for N=1,2,3 as well as with central charge for N=2,4. Besides, we give two examples of massive N=1 supermultiplets with spin 3/2 and 2 in AdS_4 space.

On Wilson Criterion

U(1) gauge theory with the Villain action on a cubic lattice approximation of three- and four-dimensional torus is considered. The naturally chosen correlation functions converge to the correlation functions of the R-gauge electrodynamics on three- and four-dimensional torus as the lattice spacing approaches zero only for the special scaling. This special scaling depends on a choice of a correlation function system. Another scalings give the degenerate continuum limits. The Wilson criterion for the confinement is ambiguous. The asymptotics of the smeared Wilson loop integral for the large loop perimeters is defined by the density of the loop smearing over a torus which is transversal to the loop plane. When the initial torus radius tends to infinity the correlation functions converge to the correlation functions of the R-gauge Euclidean electrodynamics.

Dual versions of N=2 supergravity and spontaneous supersymmetry breaking

In this paper, using a model of N=2 supergravity - vector multiplets interaction with the scalar field geometry $SU(1,m)/SU(m)\otimes U(1)$ as an example, we show that even when the geometry is fixed one can have a whole family of the Lagrangians that differ by the vector field duality transformations. As a byproduct, for this geometry we have constructed a model of (m-1) vector multiplets interacting with the hidden sector admitting spontaneous supersymmetry breaking with two arbitrary scales and without a cosmological term.

Spontaneous supersymmetry breaking in N = 4 supergravity with matter.

In this paper we consider the problem of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking in $N=4$ supergravity interacting with vector multiplets. We start with the ordinary version of such model with the scalar field geometry $SU(1,1)/U(1)\otimes SO(6,m)/SO(6)\otimes SO(m)$. Then we construct a dual version of this theory with the same scalar field geometry, which corresponds to the interaction of arbitrary number of vector multiplets with the hidden sector, admitting spontaneous supersymmetry breaking without a cosmological term. We show that supersymmetry breaking is still possible in the presence of matter fields.
