Kapitsa pendulum effects in Josephson junction + nanomagnet under external periodic drive

We investigate reorientation effects under external periodic drive in the nanomagnet dynamics coupled to a Josephson junction. The Kapitsa pendulum is introduced as a mechanical analog to this system and we demonstrate the reorientation of the easy axis of the nanomagnet. The magnetic field generated by the Josephson junction and external drive plays the role of the oscillating force of the suspension point in the Kapitsa pendulum. The high frequency oscillations change the orientation of the magnetic moment. The magnetic field of the quasiparticle current determines the frequency dependence of the magnetic moment's orientation. We obtain simple analytical formulas for the stable position of the magnetic moment, both under the external periodic drive and without it. The influence of external periodic drive on the voltage of complete reorientation have been demonstrated.

Locking of magnetization and Josephson oscillations at ferromagnetic resonance in $φ_0$ junction under external radiation

We demonstrate the locking by external electromagnetic radiation of magnetic precession in the $ φ_0 $ Josephson junction through Josephson oscillations in the region of ferromagnetic resonance. This leads to a step in the dependence of the magnetization on the bias current, the position of which is determined by the radiation frequency and the shape of the resonance curve. In junctions with a strong spin-orbit coupling, states with negative differential resistance appear on the IV-characteristic, resulting in an additional locking step. A detailed study of the time dependence of voltage and magnetization and their Fourier transforms shows that the corresponding oscillations have the same frequency as the oscillations at the first step, but they have a different amplitude and different dependence on the radiation frequency. This makes it possible to control not only the frequency, but also the amplitude of the magnetic precession in the locking region. It opens up unique perspectives for the control and manipulation of magnetic moment in hybrid systems such as anomalous Josephson junctions.

Anomalous Gilbert Damping and Duffing Features of the SFS {\boldmath $φ_0$} Josephson Junction

We demonstrate unusual features of phase dynamics, IV-characteristics and magnetization dynamics of the $φ_0$ Josephson junction at small values of spin-orbit interaction, ratio of Josephson to magnetic energy and Gilbert damping. In particular, an anomalous shift of the ferromagnetic resonance frequency with an increase of Gilbert damping is found. The ferromagnetic resonance curves show the Duffing oscillator behaviour, reflecting the nonlinear nature of Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation. Based on the numerical analysis of each term in LLG equation we obtained an approximated equation demonstrated both damping effect and Duffing oscillator features. The resulting Duffing equation incorporates the Gilbert damping in a special way across the dissipative term and the restoring force. A resonance method for the determination of spin-orbit interaction in noncentrosymmetric materials which play the role of barrier in $φ_0$ junctions is proposed.

Analytical criteria for magnetization reversal in $φ_0$ Josephson junction

The $φ_0$ Josephson junctions formed by ordinary superconductors and a magnetic non-centrosymmetric interlayer are studied. We derive an analytical solution for the magnetization dynamics induced by an arbitrary current pulse and formulate the criteria for magnetization reversal. Using the obtained results, the form and duration of the current pulse are optimized. The agreement between analytical and numerical investigations is reached in the case of a large product of the ratio Josephson to magnetic energy, strength of spin-orbit interaction and a minimal value of the current pulse. The obtained results allow one to predict magnetization reversal at the chosen system parameters.

Josephson junctions of Weyl and multi-Weyl semimetals

We study a Josephson junction involving a Weyl and a multi-Weyl semimetal separated by a barrier region of width $d$ created by putting a gate voltage $U_0$ over the Weyl semimetal. The topological winding number of such a junction changes across the barrier. We show that $I_c R_N$ for such junctions, where $I_c$ is the critical current and $R_N$ the normal state resistance, in the thin barrier limit, has a universal value independent of the barrier potential. We provide an analytical expression of the Andreev bound states and use it to demonstrate that the universal value of $I_c R_N$ is a consequence of change in topological winding number across the junction. We also study AC Josephson effect in such a junction in the presence of an external microwave radiation, chart out its current-voltage characteristics, and show that the change in the winding number across the junction shapes the properties of its Shapiro steps. We discuss the effect of increasing barrier thickness $d$ on the above-mentioned properties and chart out experiments which may test our theory.

Microwave induced tunable subharmonic steps in superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson junction

We investigate the coupling between ferromagnet and superconducting phase dynamics in superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson junction. The current-voltage characteristics of the junction demonstrate a pattern of subharmonic current steps which forms a devil's staircase structure. We show that a width of the steps becomes maximal at ferromagnetic resonance. Moreover, we demonstrate that the structure of the steps and their widths can be tuned by changing the frequency of the external magnetic field, ratio of Josephson to magnetic energy, Gilbert damping and the junction size.

Resonance phenomena in the annular array of underdamped Josephson junctions

Appearance and origin of resonance phenomena have been studied in the annular system of underdamped Josephson junctions. If no fluxon is trapped in the system, dynamics is governed by the motion of fluxon-antifluxon pairs, while if trapped fluxons are present, they can move solely but also simultaneously with the pairs. Locking between the rotating excitations (fluxons and antifluxons) and the Josephson frequency leads to the appearance of zero field steps in the current-voltage characteristics, which can further exhibit branching due to resonance between the rotating excitations and plasma oscillations in their tale. The number of zero field steps and their branching are strongly determined by the total number of excitations present in the system. High resolution analysis further reveals not only some interesting properties of zero field steps, but also shows that the current-voltage characteristics is determined not only by the number, but also by the type of excitations, i.e., whether the dynamics is governed only by the motion of fluxon-antifluxon pairs or the trapped fluxons, or they move simultaneously in the system.

Stationary Charge Imbalance Effect in System of Coupled Josephson Junction

We investigate stationary charge imbalance effect in the system of coupled overdamped Josephson junctions. We show that coupling between junction and nonzero stationary charge imbalance in the resistive state bring to a decrease of the Josephson frequency in the Josephson junctions of the stack. The formed difference in Josephson frequency leads to the nonuniform switch to the Shapiro step regime in the presence of external electromagnetic radiation and appearance of kinks of voltage on the IV-characteristics of the stack. We also show that stationary charge imbalance brings to the slope of the Shapiro step due to the difference of the charge imbalance potential on the edges of the step. The theoretical and experimental results for voltage bias coupled Josephson junctions have been compared with the current bias case.

The ac Driven Annular Josephson Junctions: The Missing Steps

Examination of an annular system of underdamped Josephson junctions in the presence of external radiation showed that the ability of the system to lock with some external radiation was determined not only by the number but also by the type of rotating excitations (fluxons or antifluxons). Shapiro steps can be observed in the current-voltage characteristics only in the system with trapped fluxons or in the system with fluxon-antifluxon pairs. If the trapped fluxons circulate simultaneously with fluxon-antifluxon pairs, there are no Shapiro steps regardless of the amplitude or frequency of the applied external radiation.

Charge Imbalance in a Layered Structure of High Temperature Superconductors

Quasiparticle injection devices are considered as one of the candidates for the high temperature superconductor transistors, which can operate at liquid nitrogen temperatures. In these devices the nonequilibrium effects are created by injecting quasiparticle current into a stack of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs). These effects lead to an occurrence of a shift of the condensate chemical potential and a difference in the distribution between the electron-like and the hole-like quasiparticles that causes a charge imbalance. Such effects are observed in many experiments for both bulk and layered superconductors. In this paper, we study non-stationary nonequilibrium charge imbalance effect due to current injection in a stack of IJJs. We investigate the effect of the charge imbalance on the current-voltage characteristic (IVC) and the time dependence of the voltage and the quasiparticle potential in a stack of five IJJs.

Shapiro Step at Nonequilibrium Conditions

Detailed numerical simulations of intrinsic Josephson junctions of high temperature superconductors under external electromagnetic radiation are performed taking into account a charge imbalance effect. We demonstrate that the charge imbalance is responsible for a slope in the Shapiro step the value of which increases with a nonequilibrium parameter. Coupling between junctions leads to the distribution of the slope's values along the stack. The nonperiodic boundary conditions shift the Shapiro step in IV-characteristics from the canonical position determined by $V_{ss}=\hbar f /(2e)$, where $f$ is a frequency of external radiation. This fact makes ambiguous the interpretation of the experimentally found Shapiro step shift by the charge imbalance effect.

Phase dynamics and IV-characteristics of two parallel stacks of coupled Josephson junctions

Two parallel stacks of coupled Josephson junctions are investigated to clarify the physics of transitions between the rotating and oscillating states and their effect on the IV-characteristics of the system. The detailed study of phase dynamics and bias dependence of the superconducting and diffusion currents allows one to explain all features of simulated IV-characteristics and demonstrate the correspondence in their behavior. The coupling between JJ in the stacks leads to the branching of IV-characteristics and a decrease in the hysteretic region. The crucial role of the diffusion current in the formation of the IV-characteristic of the parallel stacks of coupled Josephson junctions is demonstrated. We discuss the effect of symmetry in a number of junctions in the stacks and show a decrease of the branching in the symmetrical stacks. The observed effects might be useful for development of superconducting electronic devices based on intrinsic Josephson junctions.

Shapiro Step on the rc-Branch in the IV-characteristic of a Josephson Junction with an LC-shunting

The effect of external radiation on the phase dynamics of Josephson junctions shunted by an LC circuit is examined. It is shown that additional resonant circuit (rc) branches appear in the current voltage characteristics of the junctions when the Josephson frequency is equal to the frequency of the formed resonance circuit. We show that the amplitude dependence of the Shapiro step width crucially changes when the Shapiro step is on the rc-branch in comparison to the case of Josephson junction without shunt. The experimental implementation of these effects might give very important advantages for existing methods and technologies.

Structured Chaos in a Devil's Staircase of the Josephson Junction

The phase dynamics of Josephson junctions under external electromagnetic radiation is studied through numerical simulations. Current-voltage characteristics, Lyapunov exponents and Poincare sections are analyzed in detail. It is found that the subharmonic Shapiro steps at certain parameters are separated by structured chaotic windows. By performing a linear regression on the linear part of the data, a fractal dimension of D = 0.868 is obtained, with an uncertainty of +-0.012. The chaotic regions exhibit scaling similarity and it is shown that the devil's staircase of the system can form a backbone that unifies and explains the highly correlated and structured chaotic behavior. These features suggest a system possessing multiple complete devil's staircases. The onset of chaos for subharmonic steps occurs through the Feigenbaum period doubling scenario. Universality in the sequence of periodic windows is also demonstrated. Finally the influence of the radiation and Josephson junction parameters on the structured chaos is investigated and it is concluded that the structured chaos is a stable formation over a wide range of parameter values.

Breathing Charge Density Waves in Intrinsic Josephson Junctions

We demonstrate the creation of a charge density wave (CDW) along a stack of coupled Josephson junctions in layered superconductors. Electric charge in each superconducting layer oscillates around some average value, forming a breathing CDW. We show the transformation of a longitudinal plasma wave to CDW in the state corresponding to the outermost branch. Transitions between different types of CDW's related to the inner branches of current voltage characteristics are demonstrated. The effect of the external electromagnetic irradiation on the states corresponding to the inner branches differs crucially from the case of the single Josephson junction. The Shapiro steps in the IV-characteristics of the junctions in the stack do not correspond directly to the frequency of radiation $ω$. The system of Josephson junctions behaves like a single whole system: the Shapiro steps or their harmonics in the total IV-characteristics appear at voltage $\sum V_l=N_R\frac{m}{n}ω$, where $V_l$ is the voltage in $l$-th junction, $N_R$ is the number of JJ in the rotating state, and $m$ and $n$ are integer numbers.

Devil's Staircases and Continued Fractions in the Josephson Junctions

The detailed numerical simulations of the IV-characteristics of Josephson junction under external electromagnetic radiation show devil's staircases within different bias current intervals. We have found that the observed steps form very precisely continued fractions. Increasing of the amplitude of radiation shifts the devil's staircases to higher Shapiro steps. The algorithm of appearing and detection of the subharmonics with increasing radiation amplitude is proposed. We demonstrate that subharmonic steps registered in the famous experiments by A. H. Dayem and J. J. Wiegand [Phys. Rev 155, 419 (1967)] and J. Clarke [Phys. Rev. B 4, 2963 (1971)] also form continued fractions.

Manifestation of Resonance-Related Chaos in Coupled Josephson Junctions

Chaotic features of systems of coupled Josephson junctions are studied. Manifestation of chaos in the temporal dependence of the electric charge, related to a parametric resonance, is demonstrated through the calculation of the maximal Lyapunov exponent, phase-charge and charge-charge Lissajous diagrams and correlation functions. The number of junctions in the stack strongly influences the fine structure in the current voltage characteristics and a strong proximity effect results from the nonperiodic boundary conditions. The observed resonance-related chaos exhibits intermittency over a range of conditions and parameters. General features of the system are analyzed by means of a linearized equation and the criteria for a breakpoint region with no chaos are obtained. Such criteria could clarify recent experimental observations of variations in the power output from intrinsic Josephson junctions in high temperature superconductors.

Variation of Longitudinal Plasma Wavelength under Irradiation and Double Resonance in Coupled Josephson Junctions

The effect of electromagnetic wave irradiation on the phase dynamics of intrinsic Josephson junctions in high temperature superconductors is investigated. We predict three novel effects by variation of the radiation amplitude and frequency: changing of the longitudinal plasma wavelength at parametric resonance; double resonance of the Josephson oscillations with radiation and longitudinal plasma wave; charging of superconducting layers in the current interval corresponding to the Shapiro step. The "bump" structure in IVC recently observed experimentally is demonstrated. We also observe ragged Shapiro steps at double resonance.

Charging of Superconducting Layers and Novel Type of Hysteresis in Coupled Josephson Junctions

A manifestation of a novel type of hysteresis related to the parametric resonance in the system of coupled Josephson junctions is demonstrated. Opposite to McCumber and Steward hysteresis, we find that the width of this hysteresis is inversely proportional to the McCumber parameter and depends also on coupling between junctions and the boundary conditions. An investigation of time dependence of the electric charge in superconducting layers allow us to explain the origin of this hysteresis by different charge dynamics for increasing and decreasing bias current processes. The effect of wavelength of the longitudinal plasma waves created at the resonance on the charging of superconducting layers is demonstrated. We found a strong effect of the dissipation in the system on the amplitude of the charge oscillations at the resonance.

The c-axis charge traveling wave in coupled system of Josephson junctions

We demonstrate a manifestation of the charge traveling wave along the c-axis (TW) in current voltage characteristics of coupled Josephson junctions in high-$T_c$ superconductors. The branches related to the TW with different wavelengths are found for the stacks with different number of Josephson junctions at different values of system's parameters. Transitions between the TW branches and the outermost branch are observed. Time dependence of the electric charge in the superconducting layers and charge-charge correlation functions for TW and outermost branches show different behavior with bias current. We propose an experimental testing of the TW by microwave irradiation.

Charge creation and nucleation of longitudinal plasma wave in coupled Josephson junctions

We study the phase dynamics in coupled Josephson junctions describing by system of nonlinear differential equations. Results of detailed numerical simulations of charge creation in the superconducting layers and the longitudinal plasma wave (LPW) nucleation are presented. We demonstrate the different time stages in the development of the LPW and present results of FFT analysis at different values of bias current. The correspondence between the breakpoint position on the outermost branch of current voltage characteristics (CVC) and the growing region in time dependence of the electric charge in the superconducting layer is established. The effects of noise in the bias current and the external microwave radiation on the charge dynamics of the coupled Josephson junctions are found. These effects introduce a way to regulate the process of LPW nucleation in the stack of IJJ.

Influence of Josephson current second harmonic on stability of magnetic flux in long junctions

We study the long Josephson junction (LJJ) model which takes into account the second harmonic of the Fourier expansion of Josephson current. The dependence of the static magnetic flux distributions on parameters of the model are investigated numerically. Stability of the static solutions is checked by the sign of the smallest eigenvalue of the associated Sturm-Liouville problem. New solutions which do not exist in the traditional model, have been found. Investigation of the influence of second harmonic on the stability of magnetic flux distributions for main solutions is performed.

Numerical study of magnetic flux in the LJJ model with double sine-Gordon equation

The decrease of the barrier transparency in superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) Josephson junctions leads to the deviations of the current-phase relation from the sinusoidal form. The sign of second harmonics is important for many applications, in particular in junctions with a more complex structure like SNINS or SFIFS, where N is a normal metal and F is a weak metallic ferromagnet. In our work we study the static magnetic flux distributions in long Josephson junctions taking into account the higher harmonics in the Fourier-decomposition of the Josephson current. Stability analysis is based on numerical solution of a spectral Sturm-Liouville problem formulated for each distribution. In this approach the nullification of the minimal eigenvalue of this problem indicates a bifurcation point in one of parameters. At each step of numerical continuation in parameters of the model, the corresponding nonlinear boundary problem is solved on the basis of the continuous analog of Newton's method. The solutions which do not exist in the traditional model have been found. The influence of second harmonic on stability of magnetic flux distributions for main solutions is investigated.

Study of charge-phase diagrams for coupled system of Josephson junctions

Dynamics of stacked intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJ) in the high-Tc superconductors is theoretically investigated. We calculate the current-voltage characteristics (CVC) of IJJ and study the breakpoint region on the outermost branch of the CVC for the stacks with 9 IJJ. A method for investigation of the fine structure in CVC of IJJ based on the recording the "phase-charge" diagrams is suggested. It is demonstrated that this method reflects the main features of the breakpoint region.

Influence of coupling between junctions on breakpoint current in intrinsic Josephson junctions

We study theoretically the current-voltage characteristics of intrinsic Josephson junctions in high-$T_c$ superconductors. An oscillation of the breakpoint current on the outermost branch as a function of coupling $α$ and dissipation $β$ parameters is found. We explain this oscillation as a result of the creation of longitudinal plasma waves at the breakpoint with different wave numbers. We demonstrate the commensurability effect and predict a group behavior of the current-voltage characteristics for the stacks with a different number of junctions. A method to determine the wave number of longitudinal plasma waves from $α$- and $β$-dependence of the breakpoint current is suggested. We model the $α$- and $β$-dependence of the breakpoint current and obtain good agreement with the results of simulation.

Peculiarities of the stacks with finite number of intrinsic Josephson junctions

We study the breakpoint region on the outermost branch of current-voltage characteristics of the stacks with different number of intrinsic Josephson junctions. We show that at periodic boundary conditions the breakpoint region is absent for stacks with even number of junctions. For stacks with odd number of junctions and for stacks with nonperiodic boundary conditions the breakpoint current is increased with number of junctions and saturated at the value corresponding to the periodic boundary conditions. The region of saturation and the saturated value depend on the coupling between junctions. We explain the results by the parametric resonance at the breakpoint and excitation of the longitudinal plasma wave by the Josephson oscillations. A way for the diagnostics of the junctions in the stack is proposed.

Effect of coupling on scheme of hysteresis jumps in current-voltage characteristics of intrinsic Josephson junctions in high- superconductors

We report the numerical calculations of the current-voltage characteristics of intrinsic Josephson junctions in high- superconductors. The charging effect at superconducting layers is taken into account. A set of equations is used to study the non-linear dynamics of the system. In framework of capacitively coupled Josephson junctions model we obtain the total number of branches using fixed initial conditions for phases and their derivatives. The influence of the coupling constant αon the current-voltage characteristics at fixed parameter β(β^2=1/β_c, where β_c is McCumber parameter) and the influence of αon β-dependence of the current-voltage characteristics are investigated. We obtain the α-dependence of the branch's slopes and branch's endpoints. The obtained results show new features of the coupling effect on the scheme of hysteresis jumps in current-voltage characteristics of intrinsic Josephson junctions.

Vortex structure in exponentially shaped Josephson junctions

We report the numerical calculations of the static vortex structure and critical curves in exponentially shaped long Josephson junctions for in-line and overlap geometries. Each solution of the corresponding boundary value problem is associated with the Sturm-Liouville problem whose minimal eigenvalue allows to make a conclusion about the stability of the vortex. The change in width of the junction leads to the renormalization of the magnetic flux in comparison to the case of a linear one-dimensional model. We study the influence of the model's parameters and, particularly, the shape parameter on the stability of the states of the magnetic flux. We compare the vortex structure and critical curves for the in-line and overlap geometries. Our numerically constructed critical curve of the Josephson junction matches well with the experimental one.
