High-speed quantum memory with thermal motion of atoms

We discuss the influence of atomic thermal motion on the efficiency of multimode quantum memory in two configurations: over the free expand of atoms cooled beforehand in a magneto-optical trap, and over complete mixing of atoms in a closed cell at room temperature. We consider the high-speed quantum memory, and assume that writing and retrieval are short enough, and the displacements of atoms during these stages are negligibly small. At the same time we take in account thermal motion during the storage time, which, as well known, must be much longer than durations of all the other memory processes for successful application of memory cell in communication and computation. We will analyze this influence in terms of eigenmodes of the full memory cycle and show that distortion of the eigenmodes, caused by thermal motion, leads to the efficiency reduction. We will demonstrate, that in the multimode memory this interconnection has complicated character.

Purity and Covariance Matrix

Basing on the simplest single-mode field source, we investigate the role of the various covariance matrices for reconstructing the field state and describing its quantum statistical properties. In spite of the fact that the intracavity field is a single-mode field, we take into account the natural multimode structure arising in the field, when it leaves the cavity for the free-space propagation. We show how the purity of the field state can be calculated using the different covariance matrices.

Storage and retrieval of squeezing in multimode resonant quantum memories

In this article the ability to record, store, and read out the quantum properties of light is studied. The discussion is based on high-speed and adiabatic models of quantum memory in lambda-configuration and in the limit of strong resonance. We show that in this case the equality between efficiency and squeezing ratio, predicted by the simple beamsplitter model, is broken. The requirement of the maximum squeezing in the output pulse should not be accompanied by the requirement of maximum efficiency of memory, as in the beamsplitter model. We have demonstrated a high output pulse squeezing, when the efficiency reached only about 50%. Comprehension of this "paradox" is achieved on the basis of mode analysis. The memories eigenmodes, which have an impact on the memory process, are found numerically. Also, the spectral analysis of modes was performed to match the spectral width of the input signal to the capacities of the memories.

High speed spatially multimode atomic memory

We study the coherent storage and retrieval of a very short multimode light pulse in an atomic ensemble. We consider a quantum memory process based on the conversion of a signal pulse into a long-lived spin coherence via light matter interaction in an on-resonant Lambda-type system. In order to study the writing and reading processes we analytically solve the partial differential equations describing the evolution of the field and of the atomic coherence in time as well as in space. We show how to optimize the process for writing as well as for reading. If the medium length is fixed, for each length, there is an optimal value of the pulse duration. We discuss the information capacity of this memory scheme and we estimate the number of transverse modes that can be stored as a quantum hologram.

High speed spatially multimode Lambda-type atomic memory with arbitrary frequency detuning

We present a general model for an atomic memory using ultra-short pulses of light, which allows both spatial and temporal multimode storage. The process involves the storage of a faint quantum light pulse into the spin coherence of the ground state of Lambda-type 3-level atoms, in the presence of a strong driving pulse. Our model gives a full description of the evolution of the field and of the atomic coherence in space and time throughout the writing and the read-out processes. It is valid for any frequency detuning, from the resonant case to the Raman case, and allows a detailed optimization of the memory efficiency.

Entanglement measurement of the quadrature components without the homodyne detection in the spatially multi-mode far-field

We consider the measuring procedure that in principle allows to avoid the homodyne detection for the simultaneous selection of both quadrature components in the far-field. The scheme is based on the use of the coherent sources of the non-classical light. The possibilities of the procedure are illustrated on the basis of the use of pixellised sources, where the phase-locked sub-Poissonian lasers or the degenerate optical parametric oscillator generating above threshold are chosen as the pixels. The theory of the pixellised source of the spatio-temporal squeezed light is elaborated as a part of this investigation.

Induced photon statistics in three-level lasers

The statistical properties of three-level lasing are investigated theoretically. It is assumed that the three-level medium is coherently excited by another laser with an arbitrary photon statistics. It is proved that, under the specific conditions, the photon statistics of the three-level laser duplicate the photon statistics of the exciting laser. We call this phenomenon an induced photon statistics. We suggest to use this to analyze the statistical properties of a laser involved into a feedback process. Applying this laser for the coherent pump of a three-level laser, we can follow its photon statistics by means of direct following the three-level generation. In accordance with [H. M. Wiseman and G. J. Milburn, Phys. Rev. A, 49, 1350-1366 (1994)], we conclude that the feedback in itself is unable to generate the non-classical manifestation in the laser field.
