Hardware Impairments Aware Transceiver for Full-Duplex Massive MIMO Relaying

This paper studies the massive MIMO full-duplex relaying (MM-FDR), where multiple source-destination pairs communicate simultaneously with the help of a common full-duplex relay equipped with very large antenna arrays. Different from the traditional MM-FDR protocol, a general model where sources/destinations are allowed to equip with multiple antennas is considered. In contrast to the conventional MIMO system, massive MIMO must be built with low-cost components which are prone to hardware impairments. In this paper, the effect of hardware impairments is taken into consideration, and is modeled using transmit/receive distortion noises. We propose a low complexity hardware impairments aware transceiver scheme (named as HIA scheme) to mitigate the distortion noises by exploiting the statistical knowledge of channels and antenna arrays at sources and destinations. A joint degree of freedom and power optimization algorithm is presented to further optimize the spectral efficiency of HIA based MM-FDR. The results show that the HIA scheme can mitigate the "ceiling effect" appears in traditional MM-FDR protocol, if the numbers of antennas at sources and destinations can scale with that at the relay.

This paper presents a robust carrier frequency offset(CFO) estimation algorithm suitable for fast varying multipath channels. The proposed algorithm estimates CFO both in time-domain and frequency-domain using two carefully designed sequences. This novel technique possesses high accuracy as well as large estimation range and works well in fast varying channels.

Max-SINR Receiver for HMCT Systems over Non-Stationary Doubly Dispersive Channel

In this paper, a maximizing Signal-to-Interference plus-Noise Ratio (Max-SINR) receiver for Hexagonal Multicarrier Transmission (HMCT) system over non-stationary doubly dispersive (NSDD) channel is proposed. The closed-form timing offset expression of the prototype pulse for the proposed Max-SINR HMCT receiver over NSDD channel is derived. Simulation results show that the proposed Max-SINR receiver outperforms traditional projection scheme and obtains an approximation to the theoretical upper bound SINR performance within all the local stationarity regions (LSRs). Meanwhile, the SINR performance of the proposed Max-SINR HMCT receiver is robust to the estimation error between the estimated value and the real value of root mean square (RMS) delay spread.

Performance Analysis of Interference-Limited Three-Phase Two-Way Relaying with Direct Channel

This paper investigates the performance of interference-limited three-phase two-way relaying with direct channel between two terminals in Rayleigh fading channels. The outage probability, sum bit error rate (BER) and ergodic sum rate are analyzed for a general model that both terminals and relay are corrupted by co-channel interference. We first derive the closed-form expressions of cumulative distribution function (CDF) for received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the terminal. Based on the results for CDF, the lower bounds, approximate expressions as well as the asymptotic expressions for outage probability and sum BER are derived in closed-form with different computational complexities and accuracies. The approximate expression for ergodic sum rate is also presented. With the theoretic results, we consider the optimal power allocation at the relay and optimal relay location problems that aiming to minimize the outage and sum BER performances of the protocol. It is shown that jointly optimization of power and relay location can provide the best performance. Simulation results are presented to study the effect of system parameters while verify the theoretic analysis. The results show that three-phase TWR protocol can outperform two-phase TWR protocol in ergodic sum rate when the interference power at the relay is much larger than that at the terminals. This is in sharp contrast with the conclusion in interference free scenario. Moreover, we show that an estimation error on the interference channel will not affect the system performance significantly, while a very small estimation error on the desired channels can degrade the performance considerably.

Alternative Awaiting and Broadcast for Two-Way Relay Fading Channels

We investigate a two-way relay (TWR) fading channel where two source nodes wish to exchange information with the help of a relay node. Given traditional TWR protocols, transmission rates in both directions are known to be limited by the hop with lower capacity, i.e., the min operations between uplink and downlink. In this paper, we propose a new transmission protocol, named as alternative awaiting and broadcast (AAB), to cancel the min operations in the TWR fading channels. The operational principles, new upper bound on ergodic sum-capacity (ESC) and convergence behavior of average delay of signal transmission (ST) (in relay buffer) for the proposed AAB protocol are analyzed. Moreover, we propose a suboptimal encoding/decoding solution for the AAB protocol and derive an achievable ergodic sum-rate (ESR) with corresponding average delay of ST. Numerical results show that 1) the proposed AAB protocol significantly improves the achievable ESR compared to the traditional TWR protocols, 2) considering the average delay of system service (SS) (in source buffer), the average delay of ST induced by the proposed AAB protocol is very small and negligible.

Carrier Frequency Offset Estimation Approach for Multicarrier Transmission on Hexagonal Time-Frequency Lattice

In this paper, a novel carrier frequency offset estimation approach, including preamble structure, carrier frequency offset estimation algorithm, is proposed for hexagonal multi-carrier transmission (HMCT) system. The closed-form Cramer-Rao lower bound of the proposed carrier frequency offset estimation scheme is given. Theoretical analyses and simulation results show that the proposed preamble structure and carrier frequency offset estimation algorithm for HMCT system obtains an approximation to the Cramer-Rao lower bound mean square error (MSE) performance over the doubly dispersive (DD) propagation channel.

Joint Physical Network Coding and LDPC decoding for Two Way Wireless Relaying

In this paper, we investigate the joint design of channel and network coding in bi-directional relaying systems and propose a combined low complexity physical network coding and LDPC decoding scheme. For the same LDPC codes employed at both source nodes, we show that the relay can decodes the network coded codewords from the superimposed signal received from the BPSK-modulated multiple-access channel. Simulation results shown that this novel joint physical network coding and LDPC decoding method outperforms the existing MMSE network coding and LDPC decoding method over AWGN and complex MAC channel.

On Max-SINR Receiver for Hexagonal Multicarrier Transmission Over Doubly Dispersive Channel

In this paper, a novel receiver for Hexagonal Multicarrier Transmission (HMT) system based on the maximizing Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (Max-SINR) criterion is proposed. Theoretical analysis shows that the prototype pulse of the proposed Max-SINR receiver should adapt to the root mean square (RMS) delay spread of the doubly dispersive (DD) channel with exponential power delay profile and U-shape Doppler spectrum. Simulation results show that the proposed Max-SINR receiver outperforms traditional projection scheme and obtains an approximation to the theoretical upper bound SINR performance within the full range of channel spread factor. Meanwhile, the SINR performance of the proposed prototype pulse is robust to the estimation error between the estimated value and the real value of time delay spread.

On Max-SINR Receiver for HMT System over Doubly Dispersive Channel

In this paper, a novel receiver for Hexagonal Multicarrier Transmission (HMT) system based on the maximizing Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (Max-SINR) criterion is proposed. Theoretical analyses show that there is a timing offset between the prototype pulses of the proposed Max-SINR receiver and the traditional projection receiver. Meanwhile, the timing offset should be matched to the channel scattering factor of the doubly dispersive (DD) channel. The closed form timing offset expressions of the prototype pulse for Max-SINR HMT receiver over DD channel with different channel scattering functions are derived. Simulation results show that the proposed Max-SINR receiver outperforms traditional projection scheme and obtains an approximation to the theoretical upper bound SINR performance. Consistent with the SINR performance improvement, the bit error rate (BER) performance of HMT system has also been further improved by using the proposed Max-SINR receiver. Meanwhile, the SINR performance of the proposed Max-SINR receiver is robust to the channel delay spread estimation errors.

Alternative Awaiting and Broadcast for Two-Way Relay Fading Channels

We investigate a two-way relay (TWR) fading channel based on store-and-forward (SF), where two source nodes wish to exchange information with the help of a relay node. A new upper bound on the ergodic sum-capacity for the TWR fading system is derived when delay tends to infinity. We further propose two alternative awaiting and broadcast (AAB) schemes: pure partial decoding (PPD) with SF-I and combinatorial decoding (CBD) with SF-II, which approach the new upper bound at high SNR with unbounded and bounded delay respectively. Numerical results show that the proposed AAB schemes significantly outperform the traditional physical layer network coding (PLNC) methods without delay. Compared to the traditional TWR schemes without delay, the proposed CBD with SF-II method significantly improves the maximum sum-rate with an average delay of only some dozen seconds in the relay buffer.

Asynchronous Physical-layer Network Coding Scheme for Two-way OFDM Relay

In two-way OFDM relay, carrier frequency offsets (CFOs) between relay and terminal nodes introduce severe intercarrier interference (ICI) which degrades the performance of traditional physical-layer network coding (PLNC). Moreover, traditional algorithm to compute the posteriori probability in the presence of ICI would incur prohibitive computational complexity at the relay node. In this paper, we proposed a two-step asynchronous PLNC scheme at the relay to mitigate the effect of CFOs. In the first step, we intend to reconstruct the ICI component, in which space-alternating generalized expectationmaximization (SAGE) algorithm is used to jointly estimate the needed parameters. In the second step, a channel-decoding and network-coding scheme is proposed to transform the received signal into the XOR of two terminals' transmitted information using the reconstructed ICI. It is shown that the proposed scheme greatly mitigates the impact of CFOs with a relatively lower computational complexity in two-way OFDM relay.

Outage Performance of AF-based Time Division Broadcasting Protocol in the Presence of Co-channel Interference

In this paper, we investigate the outage performance of time division broadcasting (TDBC) protocol in independent but non-identical Rayleigh flat-fading channels, where all nodes are interfered by a finite number of co-channel interferers. We assume that the relay operates in the amplified-and-forward mode. A tight lower bound as well as the asymptotic expression of the outage probability is obtained in closed-form. Through both theoretic analyses and simulation results, we show that the achievable diversity of TDBC protocol is zero in the interference-limited scenario. Moreover, we study the impacts of interference power, number of interferers and relay placement on the outage probability. Finally, the correctness of our analytic results is validated via computer simulations.

Pairwise Check Decoding for LDPC Coded Two-Way Relay Block Fading Channels

Partial decoding has the potential to achieve a larger capacity region than full decoding in two-way relay (TWR) channels. Existing partial decoding realizations are however designed for Gaussian channels and with a static physical layer network coding (PLNC). In this paper, we propose a new solution for joint network coding and channel decoding at the relay, called pairwise check decoding (PCD), for low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded TWR system over block fading channels. The main idea is to form a check relationship table (check-relation-tab) for the superimposed LDPC coded packet pair in the multiple access (MA) phase in conjunction with an adaptive PLNC mapping in the broadcast (BC) phase. Using PCD, we then present a partial decoding method, two-stage closest-neighbor clustering with PCD (TS-CNC-PCD), with the aim of minimizing the worst pairwise error probability. Moreover, we propose the minimum correlation optimization (MCO) for selecting the better check-relation-tabs. Simulation results confirm that the proposed TS-CNC-PCD offers a sizable gain over the conventional XOR with belief propagation (BP) in fading channels.

Power and Subcarrier Allocation for Physical-Layer Security in OFDMA-based Broadband Wireless Networks

Providing physical-layer security for mobile users in future broadband wireless networks is of both theoretical and practical importance. In this paper, we formulate an analytical framework for resource allocation in a downlink OFDMA-based broadband network with coexistence of secure users (SU) and normal users (NU). The SU's require secure data transmission at the physical layer while the NU's are served with conventional best-effort data traffic. The problem is formulated as joint power and subcarrier allocation with the objective of maximizing average aggregate information rate of all NU's while maintaining an average secrecy rate for each individual SU under a total transmit power constraint for the base station. We solve this problem in an asymptotically optimal manner using dual decomposition. Our analysis shows that an SU becomes a candidate competing for a subcarrier only if its channel gain on this subcarrier is the largest among all and exceeds the second largest by a certain threshold. Furthermore, while the power allocation for NU's follows the conventional water-filling principle, the power allocation for SU's depends on both its own channel gain and the largest channel gain among others. We also develop a suboptimal algorithm to reduce the computational cost. Numerical studies are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms in terms of the achievable pair of information rate for NU and secrecy rate for SU at different power consumptions.

Superimposed XOR: Approaching Capacity Bounds of the Two-Way Relay Channels

In two-way relay channels, bitwise XOR and symbol-level superposition coding are two popular network-coding based relaying schemes. However, neither of them can approach the capacity bound when the channels in the broadcast phase are asymmetric. In this paper, we present a new physical layer network coding (PLNC) scheme, called \emph{superimposed XOR}. The new scheme advances the existing schemes by specifically taking into account the channel asymmetry as well as information asymmetry in the broadcast phase. We obtain its achievable rate regions over Gaussian channels when integrated with two known time control protocols in two-way relaying. We also demonstrate their average maximum sum-rates and service delay performances over fading channels. Numerical results show that the proposed superimposed XOR achieves a larger rate region than both XOR and superposition and performs much better over fading channels. We further deduce the boundary of its achievable rate region of the broadcast phase in an explicit and analytical expression. Based on these results, we then show that the gap to the capacity bound approaches zero at high signal-to-noise ratio.
