Asymmetric nonlinear-mode-conversion in an optical waveguide with PT symmetry

Asymmetric mode transformation in waveguide is of great significance for on-chip integrated devices with one-way effect, while it is challenging to achieve asymmetric nonlinear-mode-conversion (NMC) due to the limitations imposed by phase-matching. In this letter, we theoretically proposed a new scheme for realizing asymmetric NMC by combining frequency-doubling process and periodic PT symmetric modulation in an optical waveguide. By engineering the one-way momentum from PT symmetric modulation, we have demonstrated the unidirectional conversion from pump to second harmonic with desired guided modes. Our findings offer new opportunities for manipulating nonlinear optical fields with PT symmetry, which could further boost more exploration on on-chip nonlinear devices assisted by non-Hermitian optics.

Controllably asymmetric beam splitting via gap-induced diffraction channel transition in dual-layer binary metagratings

In this work, we designed and studied a feasible dual-layer binary metagrating, which can realize controllable asymmetric transmission and beam splitting with nearly perfect performance. Owing to ingenious geometry configuration, only one meta-atom is required to design for the metagrating system. By simply controlling air gap between dual-layer metagratings, high-efficiency beam splitting can be well switched from asymmetric transmission to symmetric transmission. The working principle lies on gap-induced diffraction channel transition for incident waves from opposite directions. The asymmetric/symmetric transmission can work in a certain frequency band and a wide incident range.Compared with previous methods using acoustic metasurfaces, our approach has the advantages of simple design and tunable property and shows promise for applications in wavefront manipulation, noise control and acoustic diode.

Defect solitons in defective PT potentials with real part of dual-frequency lattices

We address the properties of defect solitons (DSs) in defective parity-time potentials with real part of dual-frequency lattices. The impact of defect on stability regions of DSs was considered. For positive defects, DSs whose real/imaginary parts are symmetric/antisymmetric (SA) functions of position are always stable in the semi-infinite gap and nonexistent in the first gap. While for negative defects, in semi-infinite gap, the SADSs are stable in most of their existence region besides low power region, but in the first gap, all the SADSs are stable. The ASDSs are unstable in the whole semi-infinite gap regardless of defects, but can be stable in the low power region for positive defects.
