Electric field control of multiferroic domain wall motion

The dynamics of a multiferroic domain wall in which an electric field can couple to the magnetization via inhomogeneous magnetoelectric interaction is investigated by the collective-coordinate framework. We show how the electric field is capable of delaying the onset of the Walker breakdown of the domain wall motion, leading to a significant enhancement of the maximum wall velocity. Moreover, we show that in the stationary regime the chirality of the domain wall can be efficiently reversed when the electric field is applied along the direction of the magnetic field. These characteristics suggest that the multiferroic domain wall may provide a new prospective means to design faster and low-power-consumption domain wall devices.

Spin-orbit coupling and electronic charge effects in Mott insulators

We derive the effective charge- and current-density operators for the strong-coupling limit of a single-band Mott insulator in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and show that the spin-orbit contribution to the effective charge density leads to novel mechanisms for multiferroic behavior. In some sense, these mechanisms are the electronic counterpart of the ionic-based mechanisms, which have been proposed for explaining the electric polarization induced by spiral spin orderings. The new electronic mechanisms are illustrated by considering cycloidal and proper screw magnetic orderings on sawtooth and kagome lattices. As for the isotropic case, geometric frustration is crucial for achieving this purely electronic coupling between spin and charge degrees of freedom.

Spin-Orbital Driven Ferroelectricity

Proposing a general formulism in terms of local coordinates representing the tilting of the ligands' octahedra, we evaluate the electric polarization in a chain of transition metal ions with unpolar octahedron rotation. We find the orbital ordering produced by the ligands's rotation and the spin order, together, determine the polarization features, manifesting that nonvannishing polarization appears in collinear spin order and the direction of polarization is no more restricted in the plane of spin rotation in cycloidal ordering.

Theory of magneto-electric susceptibility in multiferroic chiral magnets

We present a theoretical examination of the magneto-electric response in the recently discovered multiferroic insulator Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. Combining Monte Carlo simulation and Ginzburg-Landau analysis we predict the response in each of the magnetic phases, including helical, conical, ferromagnetic and Skyrmion crystal phases, both for thin film and bulk systems. A common feature for all non-collinear phases is that the magneto-electric susceptibility increases linearly with the applied magnetic field. Being both calculable and measurable, the magneto-electric susceptibility can serve as a new powerful probe to detect and investigate magnetic phases and phase transitions in multiferroic chiral magnets in general.

A mechanism to pin skyrmions in chiral magnets

We propose a mechanism to pin skyrmions in chiral magnets by introducing local maximum of magnetic exchange strength, which can be realized in chiral magnetic thin films by engineering the local density of itinerate electrons. Thus we find a way to artificially control the position of a single skyrmion in chiral magnetic thin films. The stationary properties and the dynamical pinning and depinning processes of an isolated skyrmion around a pinning center are studied. We do a series of simulations to show that the critical current to depin a skyrmion has linearly dependence on the pinning strength. We also estimate the critical current to have order of magnitude 10^{7}\sim10^{8}A/m^{2} .

Bond distortion effects and electric orders in spiral multiferroic magnets

We study in this paper bond distortion effect on electric polarization in spiral multiferroic magnets based on cluster and chain models. The bond distortion break inversion symmetry and modify the $d$-$p$ hybridization. Consequently, it will affect electric polarization which can be divided into spin-current part and lattice-mediated part. The spin-current polarization can be written in terms of $\vec{e}_{i,j}\times(\vec{e}_{i}\times\vec{e}_{j}) $ and the lattice-mediated polarization exists only when the M-O-M bond is distorted. The electric polarization for three-atom M-O-M and four-atom M-O$_{2}$-M clusters is calculated. We also study possible electric ordering in three kinds of chains made of different clusters. We apply our theory to multiferroics cuprates and find that the results are in agreement with experimental observations.

Quantum phase transition in an atom-molecule conversion system with atomic hopping

The quantum phase transition in an atom-molecule conversion system with atomic hopping between different hyperfine states is studied. In mean field approximation, we give the phase diagram whose phase boundary only depends on the atomic hopping strength and the atom-molecule energy detuning but not on the atomic interaction. Such a phase boundary is further confirmed by the fidelity of the ground state and the energy gap between the first-excited state and the ground one. In comparison to mean field approximation, we also study the quantum phase transition in full quantum method, where the phase boundary can be affected by the particle number of the system. Whereas, with the help of finite-size scaling behaviors of energy gap, fidelity susceptibility and the first-order derivative of entanglement entropy, we show that one can obtain the same phase boundary by the MFA and full quantum methods in the limit of $N\rightarrow \infty$. Additionally, our results show that the quantum phase transition can happens at the critical value of the atomic hopping strength even if the atom-molecule energy detuning is fixed on a certain value, which provides one a new way to control the quantum phase transition.

Skyrmion Dynamics in Multiferroic Insulator

Recent discovery of Skyrmion crystal phase in insulating multiferroic compound Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ calls for new ways and ideas to manipulate the Skyrmions in the absence of spin transfer torque from the conduction electrons. It is shown here that the position-dependent electric field, pointed along the direction of the average induced dipole moment of the Skyrmion, can induce the Hall motion of Skyrmion with its velocity orthogonal to the field gradient. Finite Gilbert damping produces longitudinal motion. We find a rich variety of resonance modes excited by a.c. electric field.

The role of inter-well tunneling strength on coherence dynamics of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates

Coherence dynamics of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates in double wells is investigated in mean field approximation. We show that the system can exhibit decoherence phenomena even without the condensate-environment coupling and the variation tendency of the degree of coherence depends on not only the parameters of the system but also the initial states. We also investigate the time evolution of the degree of coherence for a Rosen-Zener form of tunneling strength, and propose a method to get a condensate system with certain degree of coherence through a time-dependent tunneling strength.

Unified Spin Order Theory via Gauge Landau-Lifshitz Equation

The continuum limit of the tilted SU(2) spin model is shown to give rise to the gauge Landau-Lifshitz equation which provides a unified description for various spin orders. For a definite gauge, we find a double periodic solution, where the conical spiral, in-plane spiral, helical, and ferromagnetic spin orders become special cases, respectively. For another gauge, we obtain the skyrmion-crystal solution. By simulating the influence of magnetic field and temperature for our covariant model, we find a spontaneous formation of skyrmion-fragment lattice and obtain a wider range of skyrmion-crystal phase in comparison to the conventional Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya model.

Instability of Bose-Einstein condensates in tilted lattices with time-periodical modulation

We study the dynamical stability of Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice with a time-periodic modulation potential and a constant acceleration force simultaneously. We derive the explicit expressions of quasienergies and obtain the stability diagrams in the parameter space of the interaction strength and the modulation amplitude. The ratio of the acceleration force to the modulation frequency characterizes two cases: integer and non-integer resonances. For integer resonances, the critical interaction strength $g_{\mathrm{c}}$ shows an alternate behavior where the completely unstable regions correspond to the negative effective tunneling strength. Among non-integer resonances, we observe that $g_{\mathrm{c}}$ peaks are centered around half-integer resonances for which the completely unstable regions disappear, accompanied with a whole displacement of $g_{\mathrm{c}}$. Compared with integer and half-integer resonances, the crossovers between them show no explicit dependence of $g_{\mathrm{c}}$ on the modulation amplitude.

Dynamics for partially coherent Bose-Einstein condensates in double wells

The dynamical properties of partially coherent Bose-Einstein condensates in double wells are investigated in three typical regimes. In the extreme Fock regime, the time evolution of the degree of coherence is shown to decay rapidly. In the Rabi regime, a relation between the amplitude of Rabi oscillation and the degree of coherence is obtained, which is expected to determine the degree of coherence by measuring the amplitude of Rabi oscillation. The study on the self-trapping phenomena in the Josephson regime exhibits that both the degree of coherence and the initial relative phase can affect the final particle distribution.

Enhancing molecular conversion efficiency by a magnetic field pulse sequence

We propose a strategy to enhance the atom-to-molecule conversion efficiency near a Feshbach resonance. Based on the mean-field approximation, we derive the fixed point solutions of the classical Hamiltonian. Rabi oscillation between the atomic and molecular states around fixed point solutions and its oscillation period are discussed. By designing a sequence of magnetic field pulses in analogy with Ramsey experiments, we show that a much higher atom-to-molecule conversion efficiency can be accessed by tuning the pulse durations appropriately.

Nonvanishing spin Hall currents in the presence of magnetic impurities

The intrinsic spin Hall conductivity in a two dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling is evaluated by taking account of anisotropic coupling between magnetic impurities and itinerant electrons. In our calculation Kubo's linear response formalism is employed and the vertex correction is considered. In the semiclassical limit $μ\gg 1/τ$, a non-vanishing spin Hall conductivity $σ^{}_{sH}$ is found to depend on the momentum relaxation time $τ$, spin-orbit splitting $Δ$ and the anisotropic coefficient of interaction between itinerant electrons and magnetic impurities. The clean limit of $σ^{}_{sH}$ is in the region of $e/8π\sim e/6π$, depending on the anisotropic coefficient.

Persistent spin current and entanglement in the anisotropic spin ring i

We investigate the ground state persistent spin current and the pair entanglement in one-dimensional antiferromagnetic anisotropic Heisenberg ring with twisted boundary conditions. Solving Bethe ansatz equations numerically, we calculate the dependence of the ground state energy on the total magnetic flux through the ring, and the resulting persistent current. Motivated by recent development of quantum entanglement theory, we study the properties of the ground state concurrence under the influence of the flux through the anisotropic Heisenberg ring. We also include an external magnetic field and discuss the properties of the persistent current and the concurrence in the presence of the magnetic field.

Concurrence Vectors for Entanglement of High-dimensional Systems

The concurrence vectors are proposed by employing the fundamental representation of $A_n$ Lie algebra, which provides a clear criterion to evaluate the entanglement of bipartite system of arbitrary dimension for both pure and mixed states. Accordingly, a state is separable if the norm of its concurrence vector vanishes. The state vectors related to SU(3) states and SO(3) states are discussed in detail. The sign situation of nonzero components of concurrence vectors of entangled bases presents a simple criterion to judge whether the whole Hilbert subspace spanned by those bases is entangled, or there exists entanglement edge. This is illustrated in terms of the concurrence surfaces of several concrete examples.

The prion-like folding behavior in aggregated proteins

We investigate the folding behavior of protein sequences by numerically studying all sequences with maximally compact lattice model through exhaustive enumeration. We get the prion-like behavior of protein folding. Individual proteins remaining stable in the isolated native state may change their conformations when they aggregate. We observe the folding properties as the interfacial interaction strength changes, and find that the strength must be strong enough before the propagation of the most stable structures happens.

Local entanglement and quantum phase transition in the Hubbard model

The local entanglement $E_v$ of the one-dimensional Hubbard model is studied on the basis of its Bethe-ansatz solution. The relationship between the local entanglement and the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$ is obtained. Our results show that $E_v$ is an even analytic function of $U$ at half-filling and it reaches a maximum at the critical point U=0. The variation of the local entanglement with the filling factor shows that the ground state with maximal symmetry possesses maximal entanglement. The magnetic field makes the local entanglement to decrease and approach to zero at saturated magnetization. The on-site Coulomb interaction always suppresses the local entanglement.

Numerical and Monte Carlo Bethe ansatz method: 1D Heisenberg model

In this paper we present two new numerical methods for studying thermodynamic quantities of integrable models. As an example of the effectiveness of these two approaches, results from numerical solutions of all sets of Bethe ansatz equations, for small Heisenberg chains, and Monte Carlo simulations in quasi-momentum space, for a relatively larger chains, are presented. Our results agree with those obtained by thermodynamics Bethe ansatz (TBA) and Quantum Transfer Matrix (QTM).

Two component interacting bosons: 1-d exact results

Motivated by the experiment of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates produced in magnetically trapped $^{87}Rb$, we study one dimensional Boson systems with repulsive $δ$-function interaction in the presence of SU(2) intrinsic degree of freedom by means of coordinate Bethe ansatz. The ground state and low-lying excitations are solved by both numerical and analytical methods. It is shown that the ground state is an isospin-ferromagnetic state and the excitations are composed of three elementary particles: holons, antiholons and isospinons. The isospinon is a triplet coupled to the ``ferromagnetic'' background antiparallelly.

Thermodynamics of trapped interacting bosons in one dimension

On the basis of Bethe ansatz solution of bosons with delta-function interaction in a one-dimensional potential well, the thermodynamics equilibrium of the system in finite temperature is studied by using the strategy of Yang and Yang. The thermodynamics quantities, such as specific heat etc. are obtained for the cases of strong coupling limit and weak coupling limit respectively.
