Integrated Metasurfaces on Silicon Photonics for Emission Shaping and Holographic Projection

The emerging applications of silicon photonics in free space, such as LiDARs and quantum photonics, urge versatile emission shaping beyond the capabilities of conventional grating couplers. A platform that offers arbitrary shaping of free-space emission while maintaining the CMOS compatibility and monolithic integration is in pressing need. Here we demonstrate a platform that integrates metasurfaces monolithically on silicon photonic integrated circuits. The metasurfaces consist of amorphous silicon nanopillars evanescently coupled to silicon waveguides. We demonstrate experimentally diffraction-limited beam focusing with a Strehl ratio of 0.82, where the focused spot can be switched between two positions. We also realize a meta-hologram experimentally that projects an image above the silicon photonic chip. This platform can add a highly versatile interface to the existing silicon photonic ecosystems for precise delivery of free-space emission.

Carrying an arbitrarily large amount of information using a single quantum particle

Theoretically speaking, a photon can travel arbitrarily long before it enters into a detector, resulting a click. How much information can a photon carry? We study a bipartite asymmetric "two-way signaling" protocol as an extension of that proposed by Del Santo and Dakić. Suppose that Alice and Bob are distant from each other and each of them has an $n$-bit string. They are tasked to exchange the information of their local n-bit strings with each other, using only a single photon during the communication. It has been shown that the superposition of different spatial locations in a Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometer enables bipartite local encodings. We show that, after the travel of a photon through a cascade of $n$-level MZ interferometers in our protocol, the one of Alice or Bob whose detector clicks can access the other's full information of $n$-bit string, while the other can gain one-bit of information. That is, the wave-particle duality makes two-way signaling possible, and a single photon can carry arbitrarily large (but finite) information.

Photonic density of states enhancement in finite graphene multilayers

We consider the optical properties of finite systems composed of a series of graphene sheets separated by thin dielectric layers. Because these systems respond as conductors to electric fields in the plane of the graphene sheets and as insulators to perpendicular electric fields, they can be expected to have properties similar to those of hyperbolic metamaterials. We show that under typical experimental conditions graphene/dielectric multilayers have enhanced Purcell factors, and enhanced photonic densities-of-states in both the THz and mid-IR frequency range. These behaviors can be traced to the coupled plasmon modes of the multi-layer graphene system. We show that these results can be obtained with just a few layers of graphene.
