On singularity properties of convolutions of algebraic morphisms

Let KK be a field of characteristic zero, XX and YY be smooth KK-varieties, and let VV be a finite dimensional KK-vector space. For two algebraic morphisms φ:X→Vφ:X\rightarrow V and ψ:Y→Vψ:Y\rightarrow V we define a convolution operation, φ∗ψ:X×Y→Vφ*ψ:X\times Y\to V, by φ∗ψ(x,y)=φ(x)+ψ(y)φ*ψ(x,y)=φ(x)+ψ(y). We then study the singularity properties of the resulting morphism, and show that as in the case of convolution in analysis, it has improved smoothness properties. Explicitly, we show that for any morphism φ:X→Vφ:X\rightarrow V which is dominant when restricted to each irreducible component of XX, there exists N∈NN\in\mathbb{N} such that for any n>Nn>N the nn-th convolution power φn:=φ∗⋯∗φφ^{n}:=φ*\dots*φ is a flat morphism with reduced geometric fibers of rational singularities (this property is abbreviated (FRS)). By a theorem of Aizenbud and Avni, for K=QK=\mathbb{Q}, this is equivalent to good asymptotic behavior of the size of the Z/pkZ\mathbb{Z}/p^{k}\mathbb{Z}-fibers of φnφ^{n} when ranging over both pp and kk. More generally, we show that given a family of morphisms {φi:Xi→V}\{φ_{i}:X_{i}\rightarrow V\} of complexity D∈ND\in\mathbb{N} (i.e. that the number of variables and the degrees of the polynomials defining XiX_{i} and φiφ_{i} are bounded by DD), there exists N(D)∈NN(D)\in\mathbb{N} such that for any n>N(D)n>N(D), the morphism φ1∗⋯∗φnφ_{1}*\dots*φ_{n} is (FRS).

On singularity properties of word maps and applications to probabilistic Waring type problems

We study singularity properties of word maps on semisimple algebraic groups and Lie algebras, generalizing the work of Aizenbud-Avni in the case of the commutator map. Given a word ww in a free Lie algebra Lr\mathcal{L}_{r}, it induces a word map φw:gr→gφ_{w}:\mathfrak{g}^{r}\rightarrow\mathfrak{g} for every semisimple Lie algebra g\mathfrak{g}. Given two words w1∈Lr1w_{1}\in\mathcal{L}_{r_{1}} and w2∈Lr2w_{2}\in\mathcal{L}_{r_{2}}, we define and study the convolution of the corresponding word maps φw1∗φw2:=φw1+φw2:gr1+r2→gφ_{w_{1}}*φ_{w_{2}}:=φ_{w_{1}}+φ_{w_{2}}:\mathfrak{g}^{r_{1}+r_{2}}\rightarrow\mathfrak{g}. We show that for any word w∈Lrw\in\mathcal{L}_{r} of degree dd, and any simple Lie algebra g\mathfrak{g} with φw(gr)≠0φ_{w}(\mathfrak{g}^{r})\neq0, one obtains a flat morphism with reduced fibers of rational singularities (abbreviated an (FRS) morphism) after taking O(d4)O(d^{4}) self-convolutions of φwφ_{w}. We deduce that a group word map of length ℓ\ell becomes (FRS) at (e,…,e)∈Gr(e,\ldots,e)\in G^{r} after O(ℓ4)O(\ell^{4}) self-convolutions, for any semisimple algebraic group GG. We furthermore bound the dimensions of the jet schemes of the fibers of Lie algebra word maps, and the fibers of group word maps in the case where G=SLnG=\mathrm{SL}_{n}. For the commutator word ν=[X,Y]ν=[X,Y], we show that φν∗4φ_ν^{*4} is (FRS) for any semisimple Lie algebra, obtaining applications in representation growth of compact pp-adic and arithmetic groups. The singularity properties we consider, such as the (FRS) property, are intimately connected to the point count of fibers over finite rings of the form Z/pkZ\mathbb{Z}/p^{k}\mathbb{Z}. This allows us to relate them to properties of some natural families of random walks on finite and compact pp-adic groups. We explore these connections, and provide applications to pp-adic probabilistic Waring type problems.

On twisted Gelfand pairs through commutativity of a Hecke algebra

For a locally compact, totally disconnected group GG, a subgroup HH and a character χ:H→C×χ:H \to \mathbb{C}^{\times} we define a Hecke algebra Hχ\mathcal{H}_χ and explore the connection between commutativity of Hχ\mathcal{H}_χ and the χχ-Gelfand property of (G,H)(G,H), i.e. the property dimC(ρ∗)(H,χ−1)≤1\mathrm{dim}_\mathbb{C}(ρ^*)^{(H,χ^{-1})} \leq 1 for every ρ∈Irr(G)ρ\in \mathrm{Irr}(G), the irreducible representations of GG. We show that the conditions of the Gelfand-Kazhdan criterion imply commutativity of Hχ\mathcal{H}_χ, and verify in several simple cases that commutativity of Hχ\mathcal{H}_χ is equivalent to the χχ-Gelfand property of (G,H)(G,H). We then show that if GG is a connected reductive group over a pp-adic field FF, and G/HG/H is FF-spherical, then the cuspidal part of Hχ\mathcal{H}_χ is commutative if and only if (G,H)(G,H) satisfies the χχ-Gelfand property with respect to all cuspidal representations ρ∈Irr(G){ρ\in \mathrm{Irr}(G)}. We conclude by showing that if (G,H)(G,H) satisfies the χχ-Gelfand property with respect to all irreducible (H,χ−1)(H,χ^{-1})-tempered representations of GG then Hχ\mathcal{H}_χ is commutative.

On the universal mod pp supersingular quotients for GL2(F)\mathrm {GL}_2(F) over F‾p\overline{\mathbb F}_p for a general F/QpF/\mathbb{Q}_p

Let F/QpF/\mathbb{Q}_p be a finite extension. We explore the universal supersingular mod pp representations of GL2(F)\mathrm{GL}_2(F) through computing a basis of their invariant space under the pro-pp Iwahori subgroup. This generalizes works of Breuil and Schein from Qp\mathbb{Q}_p and the totally ramified cases to the arbitrary one. Using these results we then construct for an unramified F/QpF/\mathbb{Q}_p a quotient of the universal supersingular module which has as quotients all the supersingular representations of GL2(F)\mathrm{GL}_2(F) with a GL2(OF)\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathcal{O}_F)-socle that is expected to appear in the mod pp local Langlands correspondence. A construction for the case of an extension of Qp\mathbb{Q}_p with inertia degree 2 and suitable ramification index is also presented.
