A Stringy Effect on Hawking Radiation

In string theories, interactions are exponentially suppressed for trans-Planckian space-like external momenta. We study a class of quantum field theories that exhibit this feature modeled after Witten's bosonic open string field theory, and discover a Lorentz-invariant UV/IR relation that leads to the spacetime uncertainty principle proposed by Yoneya. Application to a dynamical black hole background suggests that Hawking radiation is turned off around the scrambling time.

Simple-Sum Giant Graviton Expansions for Orbifolds and Orientifolds

We study giant graviton expansions of the superconformal index of 4d orbifold/orientifold theories. In general, a giant graviton expansion is given as a multiple sum over wrapping numbers. It has been known that the expansion can be reduced to a simple sum for the ${\cal N}=4$ $U(N)$ SYM by choosing appropriate expansion variables. We find such a reduction occurs for a few examples of orbifold and orientifold theories: $\mathbb{Z}_k$ orbifold and orientifolds with $O3$ and $O7$. We also argue that for a quiver gauge theory associated with a toric Calabi-Yau $3$-fold the simple-sum expansion works only if the toric diagram is a triangle, that is, the Calabi-Yau is an orbifold of $\mathbb{C}^3$.

Analytic continuation for giant gravitons

We investigate contributions of giant gravitons to the superconformal index. We concentrate on coincident giant gravitons wrapped around a single cycle, and each contribution is obtained by a certain variable change for fugacities from the index of the worldvolume theory on the giant gravitons. Because we treat the index as a series of fugacities and the variable change relates different convergence regions, we need an analytic continuation before summing up such contributions. We propose a systematic prescription for the continuation. Although our argument is based on some unproved assumptions, it passes non-trivial numerical checks for some examples. With the prescription we can calculate the indices of the M5-brane theories from those of the M2-brane theories, and vice versa.

Flavor symmetries of six-dimensional ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ theories from AdS/CFT correspondence

We calculate the superconformal indices of a class of six-dimensional ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ superconformal field theories realized on M5-branes at $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_k$ singularity by using the method developed in previous works of the authors and collaborators. We use the AdS/CFT correspondence, and finite $N$ corrections are included as the contribution of M2-branes wrapped on two-cycles in $S^4/\mathbb{Z}_k$. We confirm that the indices are consistent with the expected flavor symmetries.

Finite $N$ corrections to the superconformal index of toric quiver gauge theories

The superconformal index of quiver gauge theories realized on D3-branes in toric Calabi-Yau cones is investigated. We use the AdS/CFT correspondence and study D3-branes wrapped on supersymmetric cycles. We focus on brane configurations in which a single D3-brane is wrapped on a cycle, and we do not take account of branes with multiple wrapping. We propose a formula that gives finite $N$ corrections to the index caused by such brane configurations. We compare the predictions of the formula for several examples with the results on the gauge theory side obtained by using localization for small size of gauge groups, and confirm that the formula correctly reproduces the finite $N$ corrections up to expected order.

Schur index of the ${\cal N}=4$ $U(N)$ SYM via the AdS/CFT correspondence

We calculate the Schur index of the ${\cal N}=4$ $U(N)$ SYM with finite $N$ via the AdS/CFT correspondence as the contribution of D3-branes wrapped on contractible cycles in $\boldsymbol{S}^5$ on some assumptions motivated by preliminary analyses. As far as we have checked numerically it agrees with the index calculated on the gauge theory side. In a certain limit it reproduces the analytic result given by Bourdier, Drukker, and Felix.

Finite $N$ corrections to the superconformal index of orbifold quiver gauge theories

We investigate the AdS/CFT correspondence for quiver gauge theories realized on D3-branes put on abelian orbifolds by using the superconformal index. We assume that on the gravity side the finite $N$ corrections of the index are reproduced by D3-branes wrapped on three particular three-cycles in the internal space ${\cal Y}$, the abelian orbifold of $\boldsymbol{S}^5$. We first establish the relation between baryonic charges on the gauge theory side and the D3-brane wrapping numbers and holonomies on D3-branes. Then we confirm our proposal by comparing the results of localization for gauge theories and the results on the AdS side including the contributions of D3-branes and excitation on them for many examples. We only focus on the leading finite $N$ corrections starting from $q^N$, and leave the sub-leading corrections starting at $q^{kN}$ ($k\geq2$) as a task for the future. We find complete agreement for the leading corrections in all examples.

Superconformal index of N=3 orientifold theories

We analyze the superconformal index of the N=3 supersymmetric Z_k generalized orientifold theories recently proposed. In the large N limit we derive the index from the Kaluza-Klein modes in AdS_5 x S^5/Z_k, which are obtained from ones in AdS_5 x S^5 by a simple projection. For the ordinary Z_2 orientifold case the agreement with the gauge theory calculation is explicitly confirmed, and for Z_k with k > 2 we perform a few consistency checks with known results for N=3 theories. We also study finite N corrections by analyzing wrapped D3-branes and discrete torsions in the dual geometry.

Supersymmetry Enhancement and Junctions in S-folds

We study supersymmetry enhancement from ${\cal N}=3$ to ${\cal N}=4$ proposed by Aharony and Tachikawa by using string junctions in S-folds. The central charges carried by junctions play a central role in our analysis. We consider planer junctions in a specific plane. Before the S-folding they carry two complex central charges, which we denote by $Z$ and $\bar Z$. The S-fold projection eliminates $\bar Z$ as well as one of the four supercharges, and when the supersymmetry is enhanced $\bar Z$ should be reproduced by some non-perturbative mechanism. For the models of $\mathbb{Z}_3$ and $\mathbb{Z}_4$ S-folds which are expected to give $SU(3)$ and $SO(5)$ ${\cal N}=4$ theories we compare the junction spectra with those in perturbative brane realization of the same theories. We establish one-to-one correspondence so that $Z$ coincides. By using the correspondence we also give an expression for the enhanced central charge $\bar Z$.

Index calculation by means of harmonic expansion

We review derivation of superconformal indices by means of supersymmetric localization and spherical harmonic expansion for 3d N=2, 4d N=1, and 6d N=(1,0) supersymmetric gauge theories. We demonstrate calculation of indices for vector multiplets in each dimensions by analysing energy eigenmodes in S^pxR. For the 6d index we consider the perturbative contribution only. We put focus on technical details of harmonic expansion rather than physical applications.

Factorization of S^3/Z_n partition function

We investigate S^3/Z_n partition function of 3d N = 2 supersymmetric field theories. In a gauge theory the partition function is the sum of the contributions of sectors specified by holonomies, and we should carefully choose the relative signs among the contributions. We argue that the factorization to holomorphic blocks is a useful criterion to determine the signs and propose a formula for them. We show that the orbifold partition function of a general non-gauge theory is correctly factorized provided that we take appropriate relative signs. We also present a few examples of gauge theories. We point out that the sign factor for the orbifold partition function is closely related to a similar sign factor in the lens space index and the 3d index.

Supersymmetric backgrounds from 5d N=1 supergravity

We construct curved backgrounds with Euclidean signature admitting rigid supersymmetry by using a 5d N=1 off-shell Poincare supergravity. We solve the conditions for the background Weyl multiplet and vector multiplets that preserve at least one supersymmetry parameterized by a symplectic Majorana spinor, and represent the solution in terms of several independent fields. We also show that the partition function does not depends on the local degrees of freedom of the background fields. Namely, as far as we focus on a single coordinate patch, we can freely change the independent fields by combining Q-exact deformations and gauge transformations. We also discuss realization of several known examples of supersymmetric theories in curved backgrounds by using the supergravity.

Perturbative partition function for a squashed S^5

We compute the index of 6d N=(1,0) theories on S^5 x R containing vector and hypermultiplets. We only consider the perturbative sector without instantons. By compactifying R to S^1 with a twisted boundary condition and taking the small radius limit, we derive the perturbative partition function on a squashed S^5. The 1-loop partition function is represented in a simple form with the triple sine function.

N=2 supersymmetric theories on squashed three-sphere

We investigate a squashing deformation of 3d N=2 supersymmetric theories on three-sphere, which have four supercharges. The deformation preserves SU(2)_L x U(1)_r isometry and all four supersymmetries. We compute the partition function and find non-trivial dependence on the squashing parameter. We also consider the large N limit of a certain class of quiver gauge theories which have free energy of order N^{3/2}, and show that the free energy on the squashed sphere differs from that on round sphere by a certain factor depending only on the squashing parameter.

S^3/Z_n partition function and dualities

We investigate S^3/Z_n partition function of N = 2 supersymmetric gauge theories. A gauge theory on the orbifold has degenerate vacua specified by the holonomy. The partition function is obtained by summing up the contributions of saddle points with different holonomies. An appropriate choice of the phase of each contribution is essential to obtain the partition function. We determine the relative phases in the holonomy sum in a few examples by using duality to non-gauge theories. In the case of odd n the phase factors can be absorbed by modifying a single function appearing in the partition function.

Supersymmetric theories on squashed five-sphere

We construct supersymmetric theories on the SU(3)xU(1) symmetric squashed five-sphere with 2, 4, 6, and 12 supercharges. We first determine the Killing equation by dimensional reduction from 6d, and use Noether procedure to construct actions. The supersymmetric Yang-Mills action is straightforwardly obtained from the supersymmetric Chern-Simons action by using a supersymmetry preserving constant vector multiplet.

Boundary state of superstring in open string channel

We derive boundary state of superstring in the open string channel. It describes the superconformal field theory of open string emission and absorption by D-brane. We define the boundary state by conformal mappings from upper half plane with operators inserted at two points corresponding to the corners of semi-infinite strip. We obtain explicit oscillator forms analytically for the fermion and superconformal ghost sectors. For the fermion sector we compare this with numerical result obtained by using naive boundary condition.

Relation between the 4d superconformal index and the S^3 partition function

A relation between the 4d superconformal index and the S^3 partition function is studied with focus on the 4d and 3d actions used in localization. In the case of vanishing Chern-Simons levels and round S^3 we explicitly show that the 3d action is obtained from the 4d action by dimensional reduction up to terms which do not affect the exact results. By combining this fact and a recent proposal concerning a squashing of S^3 and SU(2) Wilson line, we obtain a formula which gives the partition function depending on the Weyl weight of chiral multiplets, real mass parameters, FI parameters, and a squashing parameter as a limit of the index of a parent 4d theory.

Superconformal index for large N quiver Chern-Simons theories

We investigate the N=2 superconformal index for supersymmetric quiver Chern-Simons theories with large N gauge groups. After general arguments about the large N limit, we compute the first few terms in the series expansion of the index for theories proposed as dual theories to homogeneous spaces V^{5,2}, Q^{1,1,1}, Q^{2,2,2}, M^{1,1,1}, and N^{0,1,0}. We confirm that the indices have symmetries expected from the isometries of dual manifolds.

Monopole operators in N=4 Chern-Simons theories and wrapped M2-branes

Monopole operators in Abelian N=4 Chern-Simons theories described by circular quiver diagrams are investigated. The magnetic charges of non-diagonal U(1) gauge symmetries form the SU(p)xSU(q) root lattice where p and q are numbers of untwisted and twisted hypermultiplets, respectively. For monopole operators corresponding to the root vectors, we propose a correspondence between the monopole operators and states of a wrapped M2-brane in the dual geometry.

Anomalies and O-plane charges in orientifolded brane tilings

We investigate orientifold of brane tilings. We clarify how the cancellations of gauge anomaly and Witten's anomaly are guaranteed by the conservation of the D5-brane charge. We also discuss the relation between brane tilings and the dual Calabi-Yau cones realized as the moduli spaces of gauge theories. Two types of flavor D5-branes in brane tilings and corresponding superpotentials of fundamental quark fields are proposed, and it is shown that the massless loci of these quarks in the moduli space correctly reproduce the worldvolume of flavor D7-branes in the Calabi-Yau cone dual to the fivebrane system.

preprint2008arXiv

N=4 Chern-Simons theories with auxiliary vector multiplets

We investigate a class of quiver-type Chern-Simons gauge theories with some Chern-Simons couplings vanishing. The vanishing of the couplings means that the corresponding vector fields are auxiliary fields. We show that these theories possess N=4 supersymmetry by writing down the actions and the supersymmetry transformation in terms of component fields in manifestly Spin(4) covariant form.

Strings in a PP-wave background compactified on T^8 with twisted S^1

We study a torus-like compactification of type IIB maximally supersymmetric PP-wave background. As the most general case, we discuss a T^8 compactification of all the transverse directions. A nontrivial structure of the isometry group requires an additional light-like compactification. This additional S^1 fiber is twisted on the T^8. We determine the spectrum of closed strings in this twisted torus background and compute the thermal partition function.

A D2-brane realization of Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Higgs systems

We show that N=2 supersymmetric Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Higgs systems in three dimension can be realized as gauge theories on a D2-brane in D8-branes background with a non-zero B-field. We reproduce a potential of Coulomb branch of the Chern-Simons theory as a potential of a D2-brane in a classical D8-brane solution and show that each Coulomb vacuum is realized by a D2-brane stabilized in the bulk at a certain distance from D8-branes.

Tachyonic modes on type 0 NS5-branes

Via T-duality, a stack of unwrapped type 0 NS5-branes is transformed into a Kaluza-Klein monopole with A_n type singularity at its center. The spectrum of twisted modes at the singularity contains tachyonic modes. We show that, in certain parameter region, this tachyonic spectrum is completely reproduced as modes of the bulk tachyon field localized on a classical NS5-brane solution. In passing, we show how twisted modes at the singularity reproduce gauge fields on stacks of NS5-branes.

E_8 flavour multiplets

We analyze gauge symmetry enhancements $SO(16)\to E_8$ on eight D7-branes and $SO(14)\times U(1)\to E_8$ on seven D7-branes from open strings. String configurations which we present in this paper are closely related to the ones given by Gaberdiel and Zwiebach. Our construction is based on $SO(8)\times SO(8)$ decomposition and its relation to the D8-brane case via T-duality is clearer. Then we study supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on D3-brane near the D7-branes. This theory has flavour symmetry group which is equal to the gauge group on D7-branes. We suggest that when this symmetry is enhanced, two dyons make bound states which, together with elementary quarks, constitute an $E_8$ multiplet.
