Quantum-critical phase out of frustrated magnetism in a strongly correlated metal

Strange-metal phenomena often develop at the border of antiferromagnetic order in strongly correlated metals. It has been well established that they can originate from the fluctuations anchored by the point of continuous quantum phase transition out of the antiferromagnetic order, i.e., a quantum critical point. What has been unclear is how these phenomena can be associated with a potential new phase of matter at zero temperature. Here we show that magnetic frustration of the 4f-local moments in the distorted Kagome intermetallic compound CePdAl gives rise to such a paramagnetic quantum-critical phase. Moreover, we demonstrate that this phase turns into a Fermi liquid through a Mott-like crossover; in a two-dimensional parameter space of pressure and magnetic field, this crossover is linked to a line of zero-temperature 4f-electron localization-delocalization phase transitions at low and moderate pressures. Our discovery motivates a new design principle for strongly correlated metallic states with unconventional excitations that may underlie the development of such effects as high temperature superconductivity.

Temperature-field phase diagram of geometrically frustrated CePdAl

From the electrical resistivity and ac susceptibility measurements down to $T$ = 40 mK, a rich temperature-field phase diagram has been constructed for the geometrically frustrated heavy-fermion compound CePdAl. In the limit of zero temperature, the field-induced suppression of the antiferromagnetism in this compound results in a sequence of phase transitions/corssovers, rather than a single critical point, in a critical region of field 3$-$5 T. In the lowest temperature region, a power-law description of the temperature-dependent resistivity yields $A$$\cdot$$T^n$ with $n$$>$2 for all applied fields. However, a quadratic-in-temperature resistivity term can be extracted when assuming an additional electron scattering channel from magnon-like excitations, with $A$ diverging upon approaching the critical regime. Our observations suggest CePdAl to be a new playground for exotic physics arising from the competition between Kondo screening and geometrical frustration.

Magnetic and Thermal Properties of SmRh$_2$Zn$_{20}$ Single Crystal

The magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat of the single crystalline sample SmRh$_2$Zn$_{20}$ were measured. The valence of Sm ions in SmRh$_2$Zn$_{20}$ was found to be trivalent. No evidence of valence fluctuations was detected. SmRh$_2$Zn$_{20}$ is an antiferromagnet with $T_{\rm N}=$ 2.46 K. The observed $C(T,H)$ curves showed that $T_{\rm N}$ splits into two in the external field $H$ along the [001] and [101]directions. On the other hand, $T_{\rm N}$ in $H$ along the [111] direction did not split, decreasing to 2.20 K at $H=7$ T. At 2 K, the magnetization $M_{111}$ in $H$ along the [111] direction increased linearly with increasing field, while $M_{001}$ and $M_{101}$ deviated upward slightly from the linear dependence. We analyzed the observed magnetic and thermal properties of SmRh$_2$Zn$_{20}$ taking into account the crystalline-electric-field effect, the Zeeman energy, and the exchange interaction. The theoretical calculation well reproduced the experimental $χ(T)$, $M(H)$, $C(T,H)$ and $T_{\rm N}(H)$. The sublattice magnetic moments are expected to be along the $\langle 111\rangle$ direction below $T_{\rm N}$ at $H=0$ T. Variations of the magnetic structures induced by the external magnetic fields in a narrow temperature region around $T_{\rm N}$ are inferred on the basis of theoretical calculations.

Isotropic Γ_6 Ground State in Caged Compound NdRu2Zn20

The magnetic susceptibility $χ$, the magnetization $M$, and the specific heat $C$ were measured for the caged cubic compound NdRu$_2$Zn$_{20}$ at temperatures down to 0.5 K in the magnetic field $H$ along the three crystallographic principal axes, [100], [110], and [111]. The ferromagnetic phase transition was observed at the Curie temperature $T_{\rm C}=1.9$ K in both the temperature dependence of $χ(T)$ and $C(T)$. Below $T_{\rm C}$, the magnetization curves $M(H)$ show very weak magnetic anisotropy, and the $C(T)$ curves in the fields along the three principal axes show no magnetic anisotropy both below and above $T_{\rm C}$. The easy direction of magnetization at 0.5 K changes from the [111] direction in 0 T to the [110] diretion in 7 T. We analyzed these characteristic behaviors theoretically taking into account the crystalline-electric-field energy, the magnetic exchange interaction, and the Zeeman energy. It was found that these features are originated from the isotropic $Γ_6$ ground state mixing with the magnetic $Γ_8^{(1)}$ excited state. The temperature and the magnetic field dependences of $M(T,H)$ and $C(T,H)$ are quantitatively well analyzed by this theoretical calculation.

Enhancement of Curie temperature due to the coupling between Fe itinerant electrons and Dy localized electrons in DyFe2Zn20

The temperature dependence of magnetization and specific heat of the ferromagnetic compound DyFe2Zn20 has been measured in detail in various magnetic fields. We have observed anomalous magnetic behavior, i.e., a strong anisotropy at 2 K, disappearance of this anisotropy between approximately 30 K and T_c, and anomalous behavior of the specific heat in the magnetic fields near 20 K. These anomalous phenomena have been analyzed based on the strong exchange interaction between the Fe itinerant electrons and the Dy localized electrons as well as the crystalline electric field, Zeeman energy, and an usual exchange interaction between two Dy atoms. The higher T_c of DyFe2Zn20 compared with that of DyRu2Zn20 is caused by this exchange interaction between the Fe and Dy atoms.

Simultaneously optimizing the interdependent thermoelectric parameters in Ce(Ni$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$)$_2$Al$_3$

Substitution of Cu for Ni in the Kondo lattice system CeNi$_2$Al$_3$ results in a simultaneous optimization of the three interdependent thermoelectric parameters: thermoelectric power, electrical and thermal conductivities, where the electronic change in conduction band induced by the extra electron of Cu is shown to be crucial. The obtained thermoelectric figure of merit $zT$ amounts to 0.125 at around 100 K, comparable to the best values known for Kondo compounds. The realization of ideal thermoelectric optimization in Ce(Ni$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$)$_2$Al$_3$ indicates that proper electronic tuning of Kondo compounds is a promising approach to efficient thermoelectric materials for cryogenic application.
