Deeply virtual $ϕ$-meson production near threshold

We discuss exclusive $ϕ$-meson electroproduction off the proton near threshold within the GPD factorization framework. We propose the `threshold approximation' in which only the leading term of the conformal partial wave expansion of the meson production amplitudes is kept in both the quark and gluon exchange channels. We test the validity of this approximation to next-to-leading order in QCD and demonstrate the strong sensitivity of the cross section to the gluon and strangeness gravitational form factors. We also perform realistic event generator simulations both for Jefferson Lab and EIC kinematics and demonstrate the capabilities of future facilities for measuring near-threshold $ϕ$ electroproduction.

Azimuthal Angular Asymmetry of Soft Gluon Radiation in Jet Production

We investigate the impact of soft gluon resummation on the azimuthal angle correlation between the total and relative momenta of two energetic final state particles (jets). We show that the initial and final state radiations induce sizable $\cos(ϕ)$ and $\cos (2ϕ)$ asymmetries in single jet and dijet events, respectively. We numerically evaluate the magnitude of these asymmetries for a number of processes in collider experiments, including diffractive dijet and dilepton production in ultraperipheral $pA$ and $AA$ collisions, inclusive and diffractive dijet production at the EIC and inclusive dijet production in $pp$ collisions at the LHC. In particular, the $\cos (2ϕ)$ asymmetry of perturbative origin can dominate over the primordial asymmetry due to the linearly polarized gluon distribution.

Nucleon electric dipole moment from polarized deep inelastic scattering

In a previous paper \cite{Hatta:2020ltd}, we have pointed out the connection between the $CP$-odd three-gluon (Weinberg) operator and certain twist-four corrections in polarized deep inelastic scattering. Based on this observation, we give a numerical estimate of the electric dipole moment of the proton and neutron induced by the Weinberg operator. Our result is smaller than the previous estimates based on QCD sum rules by a factor of about 3 or more.

A QCD analysis of near-threshold quarkonium leptoproduction at large photon virtualities

We propose a novel approach to compute the cross section of near-threshold $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ production in electron-proton scattering at large photon virtualities $Q^2$ based on an operator product expansion. We show that the process can be used to extract the gluon part of the D-term gravitational form factor of the proton. At the subleading level, it is also sensitive to the trace anomaly effect of QCD.

Non-global logarithms in hadron collisions at $N_c=3$

We calculate the rapidity gap survival probability associated with the Higgs decay and Higgs plus dijet production in proton-proton collisions by resumming the leading non-global logarithms without any approximation to the number of colors. For dijet production, depending on partonic subprocesses, the probability involves various `color multipoles', i.e., the product of 4 ($qq\to qq$) or 6 ($qg\to qg$) or 8 ($gg\to gg$) Wilson lines. We calculate all these multipoles for a fixed dijet configuration and discuss the factorization of higher multipoles into lower multipoles as well as the validity of the large-$N_c$ approximation.

Parton distribution function for the gluon condensate

Motivated by the desire to understand the nucleon mass structure in terms of light-cone distributions, we introduce the twist-four parton distribution function $F(x)$ whose first moment is the gluon condensate in the nucleon. We present the equation of motion relations for $F(x)$ and discuss the possible existence of the delta function (`zero mode') contribution at $x=0$. We also perform one-loop calculations for quark and gluon targets.

Spin-dependent Pomeron and Odderon in elastic proton-proton scattering

We introduce a new model of near-forward elastic proton-(anti)proton scattering at high energy based on the modern formulation of Pomeron and Odderon in terms of Wilson lines and generalized TMDs (GTMDs). We compute the helicity-dependent elastic amplitudes $ϕ_{1,2,3,4,5}$ in this model and study their energy dependence from the nonlinear small-$x$ evolution equations. While both Pomeron and Odderon contribute to helicity-flip processes in general, in the forward limit $t=0$ only the double helicity-flip amplitude $ϕ_2$, dominated by the spin-dependent Odderon, survives. This may affect the extraction of the $ρ$ parameter as well as the total cross section in the LHC energy domain and beyond.

Probing the Sivers function with an unpolarized target: GTMD distributions and the Odderons

It is commonly believed that the Sivers function has uniquely to do with processes involving a transversely polarized nucleon. In this paper we show that it is not necessarily the case. We demonstrate that exclusive pion production in $un$polarized electron-proton scattering in the forward region is a direct probe of the gluon Sivers function due to its connection to the QCD Odderon.

QCD Resummation in Hard Diffractive Dijet Production at the Electron-Ion Collider

Diffractive dijet production at the electron-ion collider (EIC) has been proposed to study the gluon Wigner distribution at small-$x$. We investigate the soft gluon radiation associated with the final state jets and an all order resummation formula is derived. We show that the soft gluon resummation plays an important role to describe E791 data on $π$-induced diffractive dijet production at Fermilab. Predictions for the EIC are presented, and we emphasize that the soft gluon resummation is an important aspect to explore the nucleon/nucleus tomography through these processes.

Sub-threshold $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ Production in $γA$ Collisions

We study sub-threshold heavy quarkonium ($J/ψ$ and $Υ$) photo-productions in $γA$ collisions as an independent test of the universality of the nucleon-nucleon short range correlation (SRC) in nuclear scattering processes. Just below the $γp$ threshold, the cross section is dominated by the mean field contribution of nucleons inside the nucleus. The SRC contributions start to dominate at lower photon energies, depending on the fraction of the SRC pairs in the target nucleus. We give an estimate of the cross sections in the sub-threshold region both for $J/ψ$ and $Υ$. This may be helpful for future measurements at JLab as well as at the Electron-Ion Collider in the U.S., and especially in China.

Analytic approaches to relativistic hydrodynamics

I summarize our recent work towards finding and utilizing analytic solutions of relativistic hydrodynamic. In the first part I discuss various exact solutions of the second-order conformal hydrodynamics. In the second part I compute flow harmonics $v_n$ analytically using the anisotropically deformed Gubser flow and discuss its dependence on $n$, $p_T$, viscosity, the chemical potential and the charge.

Collinearly improved JIMWLK evolution in Langevin form

The high-energy evolution of Wilson line operators, which at leading order is described by the Balitsky-JIMWLK equations, receives large radiative corrections enhanced by single and double collinear logarithms at next-to-leading order and beyond. We propose a method for resumming such logarithmic corrections to all orders, at the level of the Langevin formulation of the JIMWLK equation. The ensuing, collinearly-improved Langevin equation features generalized Wilson line operators, which depend not only upon rapidity (the logarithm of the longitudinal momentum), but also upon the transverse size of the color neutral projectile to which the Wilson lines belong. This additional scale dependence is built up during the evolution, via the condition that the successive emissions of soft gluons be ordered in time. The presence of this transverse scale in the Langevin equation furthermore allows for the resummation of the one-loop running coupling corrections.

Probing the Small-$x$ Gluon Tomography in Correlated Hard Diffractive Dijet Production in DIS

We investigate the close connection between the quantum phase space Wigner distribution of small-$x$ gluons and the color dipole scattering amplitude, and propose to study it experimentally in the hard diffractive dijet production at the planned electron-ion collider. The angular correlation between the nucleon recoiled momentum and the dijet transverse momentum will probe the nontrivial correlation in the phase space Wigner distribution. This experimental study will not only provide us with three-dimensional tomographic pictures of gluons inside high energy proton, but also give a unique and interesting signal for the small-$x$ dynamics with QCD evolution effects.

Single Spin Asymmetry in Forward $pA$ Collisions

We compute the transverse single spin asymmetry in light hadron production $p^\uparrow p\to hX$ and $p^\uparrow A\to hX$ including the gluon saturation effect in the unpolarized nucleon/nucleus. In the forward (large-$x_F$) region, the dominant contribution comes from the so-called derivative term associated with the soft gluonic pole. This leads to the cancellation of nuclear effects in $A_N$ which can be tested at RHIC. We also show that the soft fermionic pole disappears in the saturation environment.

A non-boost-invariant solution of relativistic hydrodynamics in 1+3 dimensions

We present a new solution of relativistic hydrodynamics in 1+3 dimensions which depends on both the transverse coordinate and rapidity. At early times the flow expands dominantly longitudinally in a non-boost-invariant manner, and at late times it expands nearly spherically. These two regimes are shown to be related by symmetry. The effect of viscosity is also discussed.

preprint2015arXiv

Analytic solutions of the relativistic Boltzmann equation

We present new analytic solutions to the relativistic Boltzmann equation within the relaxation time approximation. We first obtain spherically expanding solutions which are the kinetic counterparts of the exact solutions of the Israel-Stewart equation in the literature. This allows us to compare the solutions of the kinetic and hydrodynamic equations at an analytical level. We then derive a novel boost-invariant solution of the Boltzmann equation which has an unconventional dependence on the proper time. The existence of such a solution is also suggested in second order hydrodynamics and fluid-gravity correspondence.

Analytical and numerical Gubser solutions of the second-order hydrodynamics

Evolution of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) near equilibrium can be described by the second-order relativistic viscous hydrodynamic equations. Consistent and analytically verifiable numerical solutions are critical for phenomenological studies of the collective behavior of QGP in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. A novel analytical solution based on the conformal Gubser flow which is a boost-invariant solution with transverse fluid velocity is presented. Due to the non-linear nature of the equation, the analytical solution is non-perturbative and exhibits features that are rather distinct from solutions to usual linear hydrodynamic equations. It is used to verify with high precision the numerical solution with a newly developed state-of-the-art $(3+1)$-dimensional second-order viscous hydro code (CLVisc). The perfect agreement between the analytical and numerical solutions demonstrates the reliability of the numerical simulations with the second-order viscous corrections. This lays the foundation for future phenomenological studies that allow one to gain access to the second-order transport coefficients.

Flow harmonics $v_n$ at finite density

We generalize the Gubser solution of viscous hydrodynamics by including the finite density effect and analytically compute the flow harmonics $v_n$. We explicitly show how $v_n$ and their viscous corrections depend on the chemical potential. The difference in $v_n$ between particles and antiparticles is also analytically computed and shown to be proportional to various chemical potentials and the viscosity. Excellent agreement is obtained between the results and the available experimental data from the SPS, RHIC and the LHC.

Husimi distribution for nucleon tomography

We define the QCD Husimi distribution as the phase space distribution of partons inside the nucleon. Compared to the more well-known Wigner distribution, the Husimi distribution is better behaved and positive. It thus allows for a probabilistic interpretation and can be used to define the `entropy' of the nucleon as a measure of complexity of the partonic structure. A possible connection to the Color Glass Condensate approach at small-$x$ is also discussed.

preprint2015arXiv

Use of the Husimi distribution for nucleon tomography

In the context of nucleon structure, the Wigner distribution has been commonly used to visualize the phase-space distribution of quarks and gluons inside the nucleon. However, the Wigner distribution does not allow for a probabilistic interpretation because it takes negative values. In pursuit of a positive phase-space distribution in QCD, we introduce the Husimi distribution and demonstrate its advantages via a simple one-loop example. We also comment on a possible connection to the semiclassical approach to saturation physics at small-$x$.

A systematic study of exact solutions in second-order conformal hydrodynamics

In this paper we present the details of our previous work on exact solutions in second-order conformal hydrodynamics together with a number of new solutions found by mapping Minkowski space onto various curved spacetimes such as anti-de Sitter space and hyperbolic space. We analytically show how the solutions of ideal hydrodynamics are modified by the second-order effects including vorticity. We also find novel boost-invariant exact solutions which exist only in second-order hydrodynamics and have an unusual dependence on the proper time.

Building up the elliptic flow: analytical insights

In this paper, we present a fully analytical description of the early-stage formation of elliptic flow in relativistic viscous hydrodynamics. We first construct an elliptic deformation of Gubser flow which is a boost invariant solution of the Navier-Stokes equation with a nontrivial transverse profile. We then analytically calculate the momentum anisotropy of the flow as a function of time and discuss the connection with the empirical formula by Bhalerao {\it et al.} regarding the viscosity dependence of elliptic flow.

Exact analytical solutions of second-order conformal hydrodynamics

We present some exact solutions of relativistic second-order hydrodynamic equations in theories with conformal symmetry. Starting from a spherically expanding solution in ideal hydrodynamics, we take into account general conformal second-order corrections, and construct, for the first time, fully analytical axisymmetric exact solutions including the case with nonzero vorticity. These solutions are time-reversible despite having a nonvanishing shear stress tensor and provide a useful quantitative measure of the second-order effects in relativistic hydrodynamics.

Flow harmonics within an analytically solvable viscous hydrodynamic model

Based on a viscous hydrodynamic model with anisotropically perturbed Gubser flow and isothermal Cooper-Frye freezeout at early times, we analytically compute the flow harmonics $v_n(p_T)$ and study how they scale with the harmonic number $n$ and transverse momentum, as well as the system size, shear and bulk viscosity coefficients, and collision energy. In particular, we find that the magnitude of shear viscous corrections grows linearly with $n$. The mixing between different harmonics is also discussed. While this model is rather simple as compared to realistic heavy-ion collisions, we argue that the scaling results presented here may be meaningfully compared to experimental data collected over many energies, system sizes, and geometries.

Double-spin asymmetry $A_{LT}$ in open charm production

In the collinear twist-three approach, we calculate for the first time the gluon contribution to double (longitudinal-transverse) spin asymmetry A_{LT} for open charm production in proton-proton collisions measurable at RHIC. Utilizing the Ward-Takahashi identity for the non-pole part of the hard scattering amplitude, we derive a factorized, gauge invariant formula for the asymmetry. The result may be combined with the previous studies of single-spin asymmetry in the same channel and allows for a systematic analysis of three-gluon correlations inside a transversely polarized nucleon.

Gluon Helicity Delta G from a Universality Class of Operators on a Lattice

We show that the total gluon helicity $ΔG$ in a polarized nucleon can be calculated on a Euclidean lattice through a universality class of QCD operators that describe the helicity or polarization of the onshell gluon radiation. We in particular find some operators whose matrix elements in a nucleon of momentum $P^z$ are directly related to $ΔG$ with only power-law $(1/P^z)^n (n\ge 2)$ corrections.

Resummation of non-global logarithms at finite $N_c$

In the context of inter-jet energy flow, we present the first quantitative result of the resummation of non-global logarithms at finite N_c. This is achieved by refining Weigert's approach in which the problem is reduced to the simulation of associated Langevin dynamics in the space of Wilson lines. We find that, in e+e- annihilation, the exact result is rather close to the result previously obtained in the large-N_c mean field approximation. However, we observe enormous event-by-event fluctuations in the Langevin process which may have significant consequences in hadron collisions.

Nonequilibrium 2PI evolution of the O(N) model with longitudinal expansion

Motivated by the problem of thermalization in heavy-ion collisions, we present numerical simulations of the nonequilibrium evolution of the O(N) model in 1+2 dimensions with longitudinal expansion and in the presence of a background field. We work in the NLO approximation of the 1/N expansion and consider both the strong and weak coupling cases. Special emphasis is put on the difference between the 2PI formalism and the classical statistical approach. In the 2PI case at strong coupling, we find some evidence of the Bose-Einstein (exponential) distribution in the expanding system.

Twist analysis of the nucleon spin in QCD

The decomposition of the nucleon spin into that of quarks and gluons is related to twist-two GPDs according to Ji sum rule. Further decomposition into the helicity and the orbital angular momentum inevitably requires twist-three GPDs. In this paper we derive exact relations between twist-three GPDs and the canonical orbital angular momentum density of quarks and gluons, and check their consistency with the spin sum rule. Our work demonstrates that the complete decomposition of the nucleon spin fits well with the framework of perturbative QCD.

Eccentricity and elliptic flow in proton-proton collisions from parton evolution

It has been argued that high-multiplicity proton-proton collisions at the LHC may exhibit collective phenomena usually studied in the context of heavy-ion collisions, such as elliptic flow. We study this issue using DIPSY - a Monte Carlo event generator based on the QCD dipole model. We calculate the eccentricity of the transverse area defined by the spatial distribution of produced gluons. The resulting elliptic flow is estimated to be about 6%, comparable to the value in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC and the LHC. Experimentally, elliptic flow is inferred from the azimuthal correlation between hadrons, which receives contributions from collective flow, and from various other effects referred to as "nonflow". We discuss how to identify in experiments the signal of flow in the presence of large nonflow effects.

Gluon polarization in the nucleon demystified

Recently, X. Chen et al. proposed a new approach to the gauge invariant decomposition of the nucleon spin into helicity and orbital parts. The key ingredient in their construction is the separation of the gauge field into `physical' and `pure gauge' parts. We suggest a simple separation scheme and show that the resulting gluon helicity coincides with the first moment of the conventional polarized gluon distribution measurable in high energy experiments.

Towards thermalization in heavy-ion collisions: CGC meets the 2PI formalism

We propose to apply the two-particle irreducible (2PI) formalism to the problem of thermalization in heavy-ion collisions in the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) picture. We consider the 2PI effective action to three loops and derive a set of coupled equations for the classical Yang-Mills field and the quantum fluctuations in the boost invariant coordinate system. The initial condition and the relation to previous works are also discussed.

Odderon in baryon-baryon scattering from the AdS/CFT correspondence

Based on the AdS/CFT correspondence, we present a holographic description of various C-odd exchanges in high energy baryon-baryon and baryon-antibaryon scattering, and calculate their respective contributions to the difference in the total cross sections. We predict that, due to the warp factor of AdS_5, the total cross section in pp collisions is larger than in p\bar{p} collisions at asymptotically high energies.

Soft photon anomaly and gauge/string duality

Motivated by the recent DELPHI report on the anomalous photon production in e^+e^- annihilation, we exactly calculate the inclusive cross section of soft photons in the strong coupling limit of N=4 super Yang-Mills. We find that the energy distribution is that of the Bremsstrahlung, while the angular distribution is spherical. Our result elucidates a new non-perturbative source of soft photons not associated with the final state hadronic Bremsstrahlung.

Soft gluons away from jets: distribution and correlation

Recently, an exact conformal mapping between soft gluons emitted from jets at large angle in e+e- annihilation and those in the BFKL evolution of a high energy hadron has been proposed. We elucidate some remarkable aspects of this correspondence and use them to analytically compute the distribution and correlation of gluons in the interjet region. We also establish the timelike counterpart of Mueller's dipole model and discuss the resulting linear and nonlinear evolution equations.

Relating $e^+e^-$ annihilation to high energy scattering at weak and strong coupling

We explore the correspondence between the final state in e^+e^- annihilation and the small-x hadronic wavefunction in the transverse plane both in weakly coupled QCD and strongly coupled N=4 SYM. At strong coupling, the virtual and static photon produced in e^+e^- annihilation can be treated as a shock wave propagating in AdS space leaving spherical energy and charge distributions on the boundary. This is shown to be mathematically identical to the computation of energy and charge distributions in the transverse plane generated by a high energy color singlet state. At weak coupling, the correspondence is useful in studying interjet observables. By performing the stereographic projection to the BFKL equation, we construct an exact solution to the evolution equation derived by Marchesini and Mueller, and find the angular distribution of small-x gluons in the interjet region. Finally we argue that the correspondence holds also for the energy correlation functions.

Deconfining Phase Transition as a Matrix Model of Renormalized Polyakov Loops

We discuss how to extract renormalized from bare Polyakov loops in SU(N) lattice gauge theories at nonzero temperature in four spacetime dimensions. Single loops in an irreducible representation are multiplicatively renormalized without mixing, through a renormalization constant which depends upon both representation and temperature. The values of renormalized loops in the four lowest representations of SU(3) were measured numerically on small, coarse lattices. We find that in magnitude, condensates for the sextet and octet loops are approximately the square of the triplet loop. This agrees with a large $N$ expansion, where factorization implies that the expectation values of loops in adjoint and higher representations are just powers of fundamental and anti-fundamental loops. For three colors, numerically the corrections to the large $N$ relations are greatest for the sextet loop, $\leq 25%$; these represent corrections of $\sim 1/N$ for N=3. The values of the renormalized triplet loop can be described by an SU(3) matrix model, with an effective action dominated by the triplet loop. In several ways, the deconfining phase transition for N=3 appears to be like that in the $N=\infty$ matrix model of Gross and Witten.

Purely perturbative Boltzmann equation for hot non-Abelian gauge theories

In the perturbation theory, trasnport phenomena in hot non-Abelian gauge theories like QCD are often plagued with infrared singularities or nonperturbative effects. We show, in the context of the Kadanoff & Baym formalism, that there are certain nonequilibrium processes which are free from such difficulties. For these processes, due to an interplay between the macroscopic and microscopic physics, characteristic time scale (the mesoscale) naturally enters as an infrared cutoff and purely perturbative description by the Boltzmann equation is valid.
