A note on invariants of mixed-state topological order in 2D

The classification of mixed-state topological order requires indices that behave monotonically under finite-depth quantum channels. In two dimensions, a braided $C^*$-tensor category, which corresponds to strong symmetry, arises from a state satisfying approximate Haag duality. In this note, we show that the $S$-matrix and topological twists of the braided $C^*$-tensor category are quantities that are monotone under finite-depth quantum channels.

The split and approximate split property in 2D systems: stability and absence of superselection sectors

The split property of a pure state for a certain cut of a quantum spin system can be understood as the entanglement between the two subsystems being weak. From this point of view, we may say that if it is not possible to transform a state $ω$ via sufficiently local automorphisms (in a sense that we will make precise) into a state satisfying the split property, then the state $ω$ has a long-range entanglement. It is well known that in 1D, gapped ground states have the split property with respect to cutting the system into left and right half-chains. In 2D, however, the split property fails to hold for interesting models such as Kitaev's toric code. In fact, we will show that this failure is the reason that anyons can exist in that model. There is a folklore saying that the existence of anyons, like in the toric code model, implies long-range entanglement of the state. In this paper, we prove this folklore in an infinite dimensional setting. More precisely, we show that long-range entanglement, in a way that we will define precisely, is a necessary condition to have non-trivial superselection sectors. Anyons in particular give rise to such non-trivial sectors. States with the split property for cones, on the other hand, do not admit non-trivial sectors. A key technical ingredient of our proof is that under suitable assumptions on locality, the automorphisms generated by local interactions can be 'approximately factorized': they can be written as the tensor product of automorphisms localized in a cone and its complement respectively, followed by an automorphism acting near the 'boundary' of $Λ$, and conjugation with a unitary. This result may be of independent interest. This technique also allows us to prove that the approximate split property, a weaker version of the split property that is satisfied in e.g. the toric code, is stable under applying such automorphisms.

A class of asymmetric gapped Hamiltonians on quantum spin chains and its characterization I

We introduce a class of gapped Hamiltonians on quantum spin chains, which allows asymmetric edge ground states. This class is an asymmetric generalization of the class of Hamiltonians in [FNS]. It can be characterized by five qualitative physical properties of ground state structures. In this Part I, we introduce the models and investigate their properties.

A class of asymmetric gapped Hamiltonians on quantum spin chains and its characterization II

We give a characterization of the class of gapped Hamiltonians introduced in PartI [O]. The Hamiltonians in this class are given as MPS (Matrix product state) Hamiltonians. In [O], we list up properties of ground state structures of Hamiltonians in this class. In this Part II, we show the converse. Namely, if a (not necessarily MPS) Hamiltonian $H$ satisfies five of the listed properties, there is a Hamiltonian $H'$ from the class in [O], satisfying the followings: The ground state spaces of the two Hamiltonians on the infinite intervals coincide. The spectral projections onto the ground state space of $H$ on each finite intervals are approximated by that of $H'$ exponentially well, with respect to the interval size. The latter property has an application to the classification problem.

C^1-Classification of gapped parent Hamiltonians of quantum spin chains with local symmetry

We consider the family of gapped Hamiltonians introduced in [FNW] on the quantum spin chains $\bigotimes_{\mathbb Z}\mathop{\mathrm{M}}\nolimits_n$, with local symmetry given by a group $G$. The $G$-symmetric gapped Hamiltonians are given by triples $(k,u,V)$, where $u$ is a projective unitary representation of $G$ on a finite dimensional space ${\mathbb C}^k$, and $V$ is an isometry from ${\mathbb C}^k$ to ${\mathbb C}^n\otimes {\mathbb C}^k$. We show that Hamiltonians $H_0,H_1$, given by the triples $(k^{(0)}, u^{(0)}, V^{(0)})$ and $(k^{(1)}, u^{(1)}, V^{(1)})$ are $C^1$-equivalent if the projective representations $u^{(0)}$ and $u^{(1)}$ are unitary equivalent.

$C^1$-classification of gapped parent Hamiltonians of quantum spin chains

We consider the $C^1$-classification of gapped Hamiltonians introduced in [Fannes-Nachtergaele-Werner, Nachtergaele] as parents Hamiltonians of translation invariant finitely correlated states. Within this family, we show that the number of edge modes, which is equal at the left and right edge, is the complete invariant. The construction proves that translation invariance of the `bulk' ground state does not need to be broken to establish $C^1$-equivalence, namely that the spin chain does not need to be blocked.

Normal states of type III factors

Let M be a factor of type III with separable predual and with normal states phi_1,...,phi_k, omega with omega faithful. Let A be a finite dimensional C*-subalgebra of M. Then it is shown that there is a unitary operator u in M such that phi_i Ad u =omega on A for i=1,...,k. This follows from an embedding result of a finite dimensional C*-algebra with a faithful state into M with finitely many given states. We also give similar embedding results of C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras with faithful states into M. Another similar result for a factor of type II_1 instead of type III holds.

Ruelle-Lanford functions for quantum spin systems

We prove a large deviation principle for the expectation of macroscopic observables in quantum (and classical) Gibbs states. Our proof is based on Ruelle-Lanford functions and direct subadditivity arguments, as in the classical case, instead of relying on Gärtner-Ellis theorem, and cluster expansion or transfer operators as done in the quantum case. In this approach we recover, expand, and unify quantum (and classical) large deviation results for lattice Gibbs states. In the companion paper \cite{OR} we discuss the characterization of rate functions in terms of relative entropies.
