Loop quantum deparametrized Schwarzschild interior and discrete black hole mass

We present the detailed analyses of a model of loop quantum Schwarzschild interior coupled to a massless scalar field and extend the results in our previous rapid communication arXiv:2006.08313 to more general schemes. It is shown that the spectrum of the black hole mass is discrete and does not contain zero. This indicates the existence of a black hole remnant after Hawking evaporation due to loop quantum gravity effects. Besides to show the existence of a stable black hole remnant in the vacuum case, the quantum dynamics for the non-vacuum case is also solved and compared with the effective one.

The effective dynamics of weak coupling loop quantum gravity

By taking the limit that Newton's Gravitational constant tends to zero, the weak coupling loop quantum gravity can be formulated as a $U(1)^3$ gauge theory instead of the original $SU(2)$ gauge theory. In this paper, a parametrization of the $SU(2)$ holonomy-flux variables by the $U(1)^3$ holonomy-flux variables is introduced, and the Hamiltonian operator based on this parametrization is obtained for the weak coupling loop quantum gravity. It is shown that the effective dynamics obtained from the coherent state path integrals in $U(1)^3$ and $SU(2)$ loop quantum gravity respectively are consistent to each other in the weak coupling limit, provided that the expectation values of the Hamiltonian operators on the coherent states in these two theories coincide with their classical expressions respectively.

Alternative dynamics in loop quantum Brans-Dicke cosmology

To inherit more features of full loop quantum Brans-Dicke theory, the Euclidean and Lorentzian terms of the Hamiltonian constraint are quantized independently in loop quantum Brans-Dicke cosmology. An alternative Hamiltonian constraint operator and its effective expression are obtained in the cosmological model. A residual quantum correction term is found in the effective Hamiltonian constraint, which has no analog in the effective Hamiltonian of the loop quantum cosmology from general relativity. The dynamics driven by this effective Hamiltonian constraint is analyzed in detail. For the physically interesting case of $ω\gg 1$, this effective Hamiltonian drives a bouncing evolution which evolves from a de Sitter universe to a classical Brans-Dicke solution.

Canonical loop quantization of the lowest-order projectable Horava gravity

The Hamiltonian formulation of the lowest-order projectable Horava gravity, namely the so-called $λ$-$R$ gravity, is studied. Since a preferred foliation has been chosen in projectable Horava gravity, there is no local Hamiltonian constraint in the theory. In contrast to general relativity, the constraint algebra of $λ$-$R$ gravity forms a Lie algebra. By canonical transformations, we further obtain the connection-dynamical formalism of the $λ$-R gravity theories with real $su(2)$-connections as configuration variables. This formalism enables us to extend the scheme of non-perturbative loop quantum gravity to the $λ$-$R$ gravity. While the quantum kinematical framework is the same as that for general relativity, the Hamiltonian constraint operator of loop quantum $λ$-$R$ gravity can be well defined in the diffeomorphism-invariant Hilbert space. Moreover, by introducing a global dust degree of freedom to represent a dynamical time, a physical Hamiltonian operator with respect to the dust can be defined and the physical states satisfying all the constraints are obtained.

General geometric operators in all dimensional loop quantum gravity

Two strategies for constructing general geometric operators in all dimensional loop quantum gravity are proposed. The different constructions are mainly come from the two different regularization methods for the de-densitized dual momentum, which play the role of building block for the spatial geometry. The first regularization method is a generalization of the regularization of the length operator in standard $(1+3)$-dimensional loop quantum gravity, while the second method is a natural extension of those for standard (D-1)-area and D-volume operators. Two versions of general geometric operators to measure arbitrary $m$-areas are constructed, and their properties are discussed and compared. They serve as valuable candidates to study the quantum geometry in arbitrary dimensions.

Mechanics of Isolated Horizons in Scalar-Tensor Theories

Based on the first-order action for scalar-tensor theories with the Immirzi parameter, the symplectic form for the spacetimes admitting a weakly isolated horizon as internal boundary is derived by the covariant phase space approach. The first law of thermodynamics for the weakly isolated horizons with rotational symmetry is obtained. It turns out that the Immirzi parameter appears in the expression of the angular momentum of isolated horizon, and the scalar field contributes to the horizon entropy.

Polytopes in all dimensional loop quantum gravity

The Lasserre's reconstruction algorithm is extended to the D-polytopes with the construction of their shape space. Thus, the areas of d-skeletons $(1\leq d\leq D)$ can be expressed as functions of the areas and normal bi-vectors of the (D-1)-faces of D-polytopes. As weak solutions of the simplicity constraints in all dimensional loop quantum gravity, the simple coherent intertwiners are employed to describe semiclassical D-polytopes. New general geometric operators based on D-polytopes are proposed by using the Lasserre's reconstruction algorithm and the coherent intertwiners. Such kind of geometric operators have expected semiclassical property by the definition. The consistent semiclassical limit with respect to the semiclassical D-polytopes can be obtained for the usual D-volume operator in all dimensional loop quantum gravity by fixing its undetermined regularization factor case by case.

Graphical method in loop quantum gravity: I. Derivation of the closed formula for the matrix element of the volume operator

To adopt a practical method to calculate the action of geometrical operators on quantum states is a crucial task in loop quantum gravity. In the series of papers, we will introduce a graphical method, developed by Yutsis and Brink, to loop quantum gravity along the line of previous works. The graphical method provides a very powerful technique for simplifying complicated calculations. In this first paper, the closed formula of volume operator is derived via the graphical method. By employing suitable and non-ambiguous graphs to represent the acting of operators as well as the spin network states, we use the simple rules of transforming graphs to yield the resulting formula. Comparing with the complicated algebraic derivation in some literatures, our procedure is more concise, intuitive and visual. The resulting matrix elements of volume operator is compact and uniform, fitting for both gauge-invariant and gauge-variant spin network states.

Graphical method in loop quantum gravity: II. The Hamiltonian constraint and inverse volume operators

This is the second paper in the series to introduce a graphical method to loop quantum gravity. We employ the graphical method as a powerful tool to calculate the actions of the Euclidean Hamiltonian constraint operator and the so-called inverse volume operator on spin network states with trivalent vertices. Both of the operators involve the co-triad operator which contains holonomies by construction. The non-ambiguous, concise and visual characters of our graphical method ensure the rigour for our calculations. Our results indicate some corrections to the existing results in literatures.

New volume and inverse volume operators for loop quantum gravity

A new alternative volume operator is constructed for loop quantum gravity by using the so-called cotriad operators as building blocks. It is shown that the new volume operator shares the same qualitative properties with the standard volume operator. Moreover, a new alternative inverse volume operator is also constructed in the light of the construction of the alternative volume operator, which is possessed of the same qualitative properties as those of the alternative volume operator. The new inverse volume operator can be employed to construct the Hamiltonian operator of matter fields, which may lead to an anomaly-free on-shell quantum constraint algebra without any special restriction on the regularization procedure for gravity coupled to matter fields.

BF Theory Explanation of the Entropy for Non-rotating Isolated Horizons

We consider the nonrotating isolated horizon as an inner boundary of a four-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetime region. Due to the symmetry of the isolated horizon, it turns out that the boundary degrees of freedom can be described by a SO(1,1) BF theory with sources. This provides a new alternative approach to the usual one using Chern-Simons theory to study the black hole entropy. To count the microscopical degrees of freedom with the boundary BF theory, the entropy of the isolated horizon can also be calculated in the framework of loop quantum gravity. The leading-order contribution to the entropy coincides with the Bekenstein-Hawking area law only for a particular choice of the Barbero-Immirzi parameter, which is different from its value in the usual approach using Chern-Simons theory. Moreover, the quantum correction to the entropy formula is a constant term rather than a logarithmic term.

Manifestly Gauge Invariant Perturbations of Scalar-Tensor Theories of Gravity

The general relativistic perturbations of scalar-tensor theories (STT) of gravity are studied in a manifestly gauge invariant Hamiltonian formalism. After the derivation of the Hamiltonian equations of motion in this framework, the gauge invariant formalism is used to compute the evolution equations of linear perturbations around a general relativistic spacetime background in the Jordan frame. These equations are then specialized to the case of a flat FRW cosmological background. Furthermore, the equivalence between the Jordan frame and the Einstein frame of STT in the manifestly gauge invariant Hamiltonian formalism is analyzed, and it is shown that also in this framework they can be related by a conformal transformation. Finally, the obtained evolution equations for the linear perturbations in our formalism are compared with those in the standard cosmological perturbation theory. It turns out that the perturbation equations in the two different formalisms coincide with each other in a suitable limit.

New Hamiltonian constraint operator for loop quantum gravity

A new symmetric Hamiltonian constraint operator is proposed for loop quantum gravity, which is well defined in the Hilbert space of diffeomorphism invariant states up to non-planar vertices with valence higher than three. It inherits the advantage of the original regularization method, so that its regulated version in the kinematical Hilbert space is diffeomorphism covariant and creates new vertices to the spin networks. The quantum algebra of this Hamiltonian is anomaly-free on shell, and there is less ambiguity in its construction in comparison with the original method. The regularization procedure for this Hamiltonian constraint operator can also be applied to the symmetric model of loop quantum cosmology, which leads to a new quantum dynamics of the cosmological model.

Connection Dynamics for Higher Dimensional Scalar-Tensor Theories of Gravity

The scalar-tensor theories of gravity in spacetime dimensions $D+1>2$ are studied. By doing Hamiltonian analysis, we obtain the geometrical dynamics of the theories from their Lagrangian. The Hamiltonian formalism indicates that the theories are naturally divided into two sectors by the coupling parameter $ω$. The Hamiltonian structure in both sectors are similar to the corresponding structure of 4-dimensional cases. It turns out that there is a symplectic reduction from the canonical structure of $so(D+1)$ Yang-Mills theories coupled to the scalar field to the canonical structure of the geometrical scalar-tensor theories. Therefore the non-perturbative loop quantum gravity techniques can also be applied to the scalar-tensor theories in $D+1$ dimensions based on their connection-dynamical formalism.

Action principle for the connection dynamics of scalar-tensor theories

A first-order action for scalar-tensor theories of gravity is proposed. The Hamiltonian analysis of the action gives the desired connection dynamical formalism, which was derived from the geometrical dynamics by canonical transformations. It is shown that this connection formalism in Jordan frame is equivalent to the alternative connection formalism in Einstein frame. Therefore, the action principle underlying loop quantum scalar-tensor theories is recovered.

Anomaly freedom of the vector modes with holonomy corrections in perturbative Euclidean loop quantum gravity

We study the perturbation of the effective Hamiltonian constraint with holonomy correction from Euclidean loop quantum gravity. The Poisson bracket between the corrected Hamiltonian constraint and the diffeomorphism constraint is derived for vector modes. Some specific form of the holonomy correction function $f^{i}_{cd}$ is found, which satisfies that the constraint algebra is anomaly-free. This result confirms the possibility of non-trivial holonomy corrections from full theory while preserving anomaly-free constraint algebra in the perturbation framework. It also gives valuable hints on the possible form of holonomy corrections in effective loop quantum gravity.

Connection dynamics of a gauge theory of gravity coupled with matter

We study the coupling of the gravitational action, which is a linear combination of the Hilbert-Palatini term and the quadratic torsion term, to the action of Dirac fermions. The system possesses local Poincare invariance and hence belongs to Poincare gauge theory with matter. The complete Hamiltonian analysis of the theory is carried out without gauge fixing but under certain ansatz on the coupling parameters, which leads to a consistent connection dynamics with second-class constraints and torsion. After performing a partial gauge fixing, all second-class constraints can be solved, and a SU(2)-connection dynamical formalism of the theory can be obtained. Hence, the techniques of loop quantum gravity can be employed to quantize this Poincare gauge theory with non-zero torsion. Moreover, the Barbero-Immirzi parameter in loop quantum gravity acquires its physical meaning as the coupling parameter between the Hilbert-Palatini term and the quadratic torsion term in this gauge theory of gravity.

Loop quantum Brans-Dicke cosmology

The spatially flat and isotropic cosmological model of Brans-Dicke theory with coupling parameter $ω\neq-3/2$ is quantized by the approach of loop quantum cosmology. An interesting feature of this model is that, although the Brans-Dicke scalar field is non-minimally coupled with curvature, it can still play the role of an emergent time variable. In the quantum theory, the classical differential equation which represents cosmological evolution is replaced by a quantum difference equation. The effective Hamiltonian and modified dynamical equations of loop quantum Brans-Dicke cosmology are also obtained, which lay a foundation for the phenomenological investigation to possible quantum gravity effects in cosmology. The effective equations indicate that the classical big bang singularity is again replaced by a quantum bounce in loop quantum Brans-Dicke cosmology.

Coherent State Functional Integral in Loop Quantum Cosmology: Alternative Dynamics

Coherent state functional integral for the minisuperspace model of loop quantum cosmology is studied. By the well-established canonical theory, the transition amplitude in the path integral representation of loop quantum cosmology with alternative dynamics can be formulated through group averaging. The effective action and Hamiltonian with higher-order quantum corrections are thus obtained. It turns out that for a non-symmetric Hamiltonian constraint operator, the Moyal (star)-product emerges naturally in the effective Hamiltonian. For the corresponding symmetric Hamiltonian operator, the resulted effective theory implies a possible quantum cosmological effect in large scale limit in the alternative dynamical scenario, which coincides with the result in canonical approach. Moreover, the first-order modified Friedmann equation still contains the particular information of alternative dynamics and hence admits the possible phenomenological distinction between the different proposals of quantum dynamics.

Coherent State Functional Integrals in Quantum Cosmology

Coherent state functional integrals for the minisuperspace models of quantum cosmology are studied. By the well-established canonical theories, the transition amplitudes in the path-integral representations of Wheeler-DeWitt quantum cosmology and loop quantum cosmology can be formulated through group averaging. The effective action and Hamiltonian with higher-order quantum corrections are thus obtained in both models. It turns out that for a non-symmetric Hamiltonian constraint operator, the Moyal (star)-product emerges naturally in the effective Hamiltonian. This reveals the intrinsic relation among coherent state functional integral, effective theory and star-product. Moreover, both the resulted effective theories imply a possible quantum cosmological effect in large scale limit.

Effective Theories of Quantum Cosmology

We introduce two possible ways of defining effective constraints of quantum systems and applied this effective constraint method to models of WDW Quantum Cosmology and Loop Quantum Cosmology. We analyze effective Hamiltonian constraint on both second and third order and calculate Hubble parameter as well as modified Friedmann equation of each model. Then we compare with a special case using coherent state. It shows that this method is reasonable and as before the classical Big Bang singularity is replaced by a quantum bounce in Loop Quantum Cosmology.

Hamiltonian Analysis of $R + T^2$ Action

We study a gravitational action which is a linear combination of the Hilbert-Palatini term and a term quadratic in torsion and possessing local Poincare invariance. Although this action yields the same equations of motion as General Relativity, the detailed Hamiltonian analysis without gauge fixing reveals some new points never shown in the Hilbert-Palatini formalism. These include that an additional term containing torsion appears in the spatial diffeomorphism constraint and that the primary second-class constraints have to be imposed in a manner different from that in the Hilbert-Palatini case. These results may provide valuable lessons for further study of Hamiltonian systems with torsion.

Loop quantum modified gravity and its cosmological application

A general nonperturvative loop quantization procedure for metric modified gravity is reviewed. As an example, this procedure is applied to scalar-tensor theories of gravity. The quantum kinematical framework of these theories is rigorously constructed. Both the Hamiltonian and master constraint operators are well defined and proposed to represent quantum dynamics of scalar-tensor theories. As an application to models, we set up the basic structure of loop quantum Brans-Dicke cosmology. The effective dynamical equations of loop quantum Brans-Dicke cosmology are also obtained, which lay a foundation for the phenomenological investigation to possible quantum gravity effects in cosmology.

Path Integrals and Alternative Effective Dynamics in Loop Quantum Cosmology

The alternative dynamics of loop quantum cosmology is examined by the path integral formulation. We consider the spatially flat FRW models with a massless scalar field, where the alternative quantization inherit more features from full loop quantum gravity. The path integrals can be formulated in both timeless and deparameterized frameworks. It turns out that the effective Hamiltonians derived from the two different viewpoints are equivalent to each other. Moreover, the first-order modified Friedmann equations are derived and predict quantum bounces for contracting universe, which coincide with those obtained in canonical theory.

Extension of loop quantum gravity to $f(R)$ theories

The 4-dimensional metric $f(\R)$ theories of gravity are cast into connection-dynamical formalism with real $\SU(2)$-connections as configuration variables. Through this formalism, the classical metric $f(\R)$ theories are quantized by extending the loop quantization scheme of general relativity. Our results imply that the non-perturbative quantization procedure of loop quantum gravity is valid not only for general relativity but also for a rather general class of 4-dimensional metric theories of gravity.

Extension of Loop Quantum Gravity to Metric Theories beyond General Relativity

The successful background-independent quantization of Loop Quantum Gravity relies on the key observation that classical General Relativity can be cast into the connection-dynamical formalism with the structure group of SU(2). Due to this particular formalism, Loop Quantum Gravity was generally considered as a quantization scheme that applies only to General Relativity. However, we will show that the nonperturbative quantization procedure of Loop Quantum Gravity can be extended to a rather general class of metric theories of gravity, which have received increased attention recently due to motivations coming form cosmology and astrophysics. In particular, we will first introduce how to reformulate the 4-dimensional metric $f(R)$ theories of gravity, as well as Brans-Dicke theory, into connection-dynamical formalism with real SU(2) connections as configuration variables. Through these formalisms, we then outline the nonpertubative canonical quantization of the $f(R)$ theories and Brans-Dicke theory by extending the loop quantization scheme of General Relativity.

Loop quantum $f(R)$ theories

As modified gravity theories, the 4-dimensional metric $f(R)$ theories are cast into connection dynamical formalism with real $su(2)$-connections as configuration variables. This formalism enables us to extend the non-perturbative loop quantization scheme of general relativity to any metric $f(R)$ theories. The quantum kinematical framework of $f(R)$ gravity is rigorously constructed, where the quantum dynamics can be launched. Both Hamiltonian constraint operator and master constraint operator for $f(R)$ theories are well defined. Our results show that the non-perturbative quantization procedure of loop quantum gravity are valid not only for general relativity but also for a rather general class of 4-dimensional metric theories of gravity.

Loop Quantum Brans-Dicke Theory

The loop quantization of Brans-Dicke theory (with coupling parameter $ω\neq-3/2$) is studied. In the geometry-dynamical formalism, the canonical structure and constraint algebra of this theory are similar to those of general relativity coupled with a scalar field. The connection dynamical formalism of the Brans-Dicke theory with real $su(2)$-connections as configuration variables is obtained by canonical transformations. The quantum kinematical Hilbert space of Brans-Dicke theory is constituted as of that loop quantum gravity coupled with a polymer-like scalar field. The Hamiltonian constraint is promoted as a well defined operator to represent quantum dynamics. This formalism enable us to extend the scheme of non-perturbative loop quantum gravity to the Brans-Dicke theory.

Nonperturbative Loop Quantization of Scalar-Tensor Theories of Gravity

The Hamiltonian formulation of scalar-tensor theories of gravity is derived from their Lagrangian formulation by Hamiltonian analysis. The Hamiltonian formalism marks off two sectors of the theories by the coupling parameter $ω(ϕ)$. In the sector of $ω(ϕ)=-3/2$, the feasible theories are restricted and a new primary constraint generating conformal transformations of spacetime is obtained, while in the other sector of $ω(ϕ)\neq-3/2$, the canonical structure and constraint algebra of the theories are similar to those of general relativity coupled with a scalar field. By canonical transformations, we further obtain the connection dynamical formalism of the scalar-tensor theories with real $su(2)$-connections as configuration variables in both sectors. This formalism enables us to extend the scheme of non-perturbative loop quantum gravity to the scalar-tensor theories. The quantum kinematical framework for the scalar-tensor theories is rigorously constructed. Both the Hamiltonian constraint operator and master constraint operator are well defined and proposed to represent quantum dynamics. Thus loop quantum gravity method is also valid for general scalar-tensor theories.

Path Integral and Effective Hamiltonian in Loop Quantum Cosmology

We study the path integral formulation of Friedmann universe filled with a massless scalar field in loop quantum cosmology. All the isotropic models of $k=0,+1,-1$ are considered. To construct the path integrals in the timeless framework, a multiple group-averaging approach is proposed. Meanwhile, since the transition amplitude in the deparameterized framework can be expressed in terms of group-averaging, the path integrals can be formulated for both deparameterized and timeless frameworks. Their relation is clarified. It turns out that the effective Hamiltonian derived from the path integral in deparameterized framework is equivalent to the effective Hamiltonian constraint derived from the path integral in timeless framework, since they lead to same equations of motion. Moreover, the effective Hamiltonian constraints of above models derived in canonical theory are confirmed by the path integral formulation.

Dark Energy Interacting with Dark Matter in Classical Einstein and Loop Quantum Cosmology

The cosmological model of dark energy interacting with cold dark matter without coupling to the baryonic matter, is studied in the background of both classical Einstein and loop quantum cosmology. We consider two types of interacting models. In the former model, the interaction is a linear combination of the densities of two dark sectors, while in the latter model, the interaction with a constant transfer rate depends only on the density of cold dark matter. It is shown that the dynamical results in loop quantum cosmology are different from those in classical Einstein cosmology for both two kinds of interacting models. Moreover, the form of the interaction affects significantly the dynamical results in both kinds of cosmology.

Five-dimensional metric $f(R)$ gravity and the accelerated universe

The metric $f(R)$ theories of gravity are generalized to five-dimensional spacetimes. By assuming a hypersurface-orthogonal Killing vector field representing the compact fifth dimension, the five-dimensional theories are reduced to their four-dimensional formalism. Then we study the cosmology of a special class of $f(R)=αR^m$ models in a spatially flat FRW spacetime. It is shown that the parameter $m$ can be constrained to a certain range by the current observed deceleration parameter, and its lower bound corresponds to the Kaluza-Klein theory. It turns out that both expansion and contraction of the extra dimension may prescribe the smooth transition from the deceleration era to the acceleration era in the recent past as well as an accelerated scenario for the present universe. Hence five-dimensional $f(R)$ gravity can naturally account for the present accelerated expansion of the universe. Moreover, the models predict a transition from acceleration to deceleration in the future, followed by a cosmic recollapse within finite time. This differs from the prediction of the five-dimensional Brans-Dicke theory but is in consistent with a recent prediction based on loop quantum cosmology.

New length operator for loop quantum gravity

An alternative expression for the length operator in loop quantum gravity is presented. The operator is background independent, symmetric, positive semidefinite, and well defined on the kinematical Hilbert space. The expression for the regularized length operator can moreover be understood both from a simple geometrical perspective as the average of a formula relating the length to area, volume and flux operators, and also consistently as the result of direct substitution of the densitized triad operator with the functional derivative operator into the regularized expression of the length. Both these derivations are discussed, and the origin of an undetermined overall factor in each case is also elucidated.

Alternative quantization of the Hamiltonian in loop quantum cosmology II: Including the Lorentz term

Since there are quantization ambiguities in constructing the Hamiltonian constraint operator in isotropic loop quantum cosmology, it is crucial to check whether the key features of loop quantum cosmology are robust against the ambiguities. In this paper, we quantize the Lorentz term of the gravitational Hamiltonian constraint in the spatially flat FRW model by two approaches different from that of the Euclidean term. One of the approaches is very similar to the treatment of the Lorentz part of Hamiltonian in loop quantum gravity and hence inherits more features from the full theory. Two symmetric Hamiltonian constraint operators are constructed respectively in the improved scheme. Both of them are shown to have the correct classical limit by the semiclassical analysis. In the loop quantum cosmological model with a massless scalar field, the effective Hamiltonians and Friedmann equations are derived. It turns out that the classical big bang is again replaced by a quantum bounce in both cases. Moreover, there are still great possibilities for the expanding universe to recollapse due to the quantum gravity effect.

Cosmological Implications of 5-dimensional Brans-Dicke Theory

The five dimensional Brans-Dicke theory naturally provides two scalar fields by the Killing reduction mechanism. These two scalar fields could account for the accelerated expansion of the universe. We test this model and constrain its parameter by using the type Ia supernova (SN Ia) data. We find that the best fit value of the 5-dimensional Brans-Dicke coupling contant is $ω= -1.9$. This result is also consistent with other observations such as the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO).

Emergence of scalar matter from spinfoam model

A spinfoam model of 3D gravity non-minimally coupled with a scalar field is studied. By discretization of the scalar field, the model is worked out precisely in a purely combinational way. It is shown that the quantum physics of the scalar matter are totally encoded into the modified dynamics of SU(2) spin-network states which describe the quantum geometry of space. It turns out that the physics of the scalar matter coupled with gravity manifested in the low energy scale can be viewed as the phenomena emerged from this microscopical construction. This gives rise to a radical observation on the issue of the unification of geometry and matter.

Quasi-Local Energy in Loop Quantum Gravity

Although there is no known meaningful notion of the energy density of the gravitational field in general relativity, a few notions of quasi-local energy of gravity associated to extended but finite domains have been proposed. In this paper, the notions of quasi-local energy are studied in the framework of loop quantum gravity, in order to see whether these notions can be carried out at quantum level. Two basic quasi-local geometric quantities are quantized, which lead to well-defined operators in the kinematical Hilbert space of loop quantum gravity. We then use them as basic building blocks to construct different versions of quasi-local energy operators. The operators corresponding to Brown-York energy, Liu-Yau energy, Hawking energy, and Geroch energy are obtained respectively. The virtue of the Geroch energy operator is beneficial for us to derive a rather general entropy-area relation and thus a holographic principle from loop quantum gravity.

Fundamental Structure of Loop Quantum Gravity

In this review, the fundamental structure of loop quantum gravity is presented pedagogically. Our main aim is to help non-experts to understand the motivations, basic structures, as well as general results. It may also be beneficial to practitioners to gain insights from different perspectives on the theory. We will focus on the theoretical framework itself, rather than its applications, and do our best to write it in modern and precise langauge while keeping the presentation accessible for beginners. After reviewing the classical connection dynamical formalism of general relativity, as a foundation, the construction of kinematical Ashtekar-Isham-Lewandowski representation is introduced in the content of quantum kinematics. The algebraic structure of quantum kinematics is also discussed. In the content of quantum dynamics, we mainly introduce the construction of a Hamiltonian constraint operator and the master constraint project. At last, some applications and recent advances are outlined. It should be noted that this strategy of quantizing gravity can also be extended to obtain other background independent quantum gauge theories. There is no divergence within this background independent and diffeomorphism invariant quantization programme of matter coupled to gravity.

Dynamics of Scalar Field in Polymer-like Representation

In recent twenty years, loop quantum gravity, a background independent approach to unify general relativity and quantum mechanics, has been widely investigated. We consider the quantum dynamics of a real massless scalar field coupled to gravity in this framework. A Hamiltonian operator for the scalar field can be well defined in the coupled diffeomorphism invariant Hilbert space, which is both self-adjoint and positive. On the other hand, the Hamiltonian constraint operator for the scalar field coupled to gravity can be well defined in the coupled kinematical Hilbert space. There are 1-parameter ambiguities due to scalar field in the construction of both operators. The results heighten our confidence that there is no divergence within this background independent and diffeomorphism invariant quantization approach of matter coupled to gravity. Moreover, to avoid possible quantum anomaly, the master constraint programme can be carried out in this coupled system by employing a self-adjoint master constraint operator on the diffeomorphism invariant Hilbert space.

Master Constraint Operator in Loop Quantum Gravity

We introduce a master constraint operator $\hat{\mathbf{M}}$ densely defined in the diffeomorphism invariant Hilbert space in loop quantum gravity, which corresponds classically to the master constraint in the programme. It is shown that $\hat{\mathbf{M}}$ is positive and symmetric, and hence has its Friedrichs self-adjoint extension. The same conclusion is tenable for an alternative master operator $\hat{\mathbf{M'}}$, whose quadratic form coincides with the one proposed by Thiemann. So the master constraint programme for loop quantum gravity can be carried out in principle by employing either of the two operators.

Gravitational Thermodynamics of Space-time Foam in One-loop Approximation

We show from one-loop quantum gravity and statistical thermodynamics that the thermodynamics of quantum foam in flat space-time and Schwarzschild space-time is exactly the same as that of Hawking-Unruh radiation in thermal equilibrium. This means we show unambiguously that Hawking-Unruh thermal radiation should contain thermal gravitons or the contribution of quantum space-time foam. As a by-product, we give also the quantum gravity correction in one-loop approximation to the classical black hole thermodynamics.
