Content Distribution based on Joint V2I and V2V Scheduling in mmWave Vehicular Networks

With the explosive growth of vehicle applications, vehicular networks based on millimeter wave (mmWave) bands have attracted interests from both academia and industry. mmWave communications are able to utilize the huge available bandwidth to provide multiple Gbps transmission rates among vehicles. In this paper, we address the content distribution scheduling problem in mmWave vehicular networks. It has been challenging for all vehicles in the same network to complete content downloading due to the limited communication resources of roadside units (RSUs) and the high mobility of vehicles. We propose a joint vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-tovehicle (V2V) scheduling scheme to minimize the total number of content distribution time slots from a global optimization perspective. In the V2I phase, the RSU serially transmits integrity content to vehicles, which are selected according to the vehicular network topology and transmission scheduling scheme. In the V2V phase, full-duplex communications and concurrent transmissions are exploited to achieve content sharing between vehicles and improve transmission efficiency. Performance evaluations demonstrate that our proposed scheme reduces the number of time slots and significantly improves system throughput when compared with other schemes, especially under large-size file transfers and a large number of vehicles.

Coverage Probability Analysis of RIS-Assisted High-Speed Train Communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has received increasing attention due to its capability of extending cell coverage by reflecting signals toward receivers. This paper considers a RIS-assisted high-speed train (HST) communication system to improve the coverage probability. We derive the closed-form expression of coverage probability. Moreover, we analyze impacts of some key system parameters, including transmission power, signal-to-noise ratio threshold, and horizontal distance between base station and RIS. Simulation results verify the efficiency of RIS-assisted HST communications in terms of coverage probability.

Deep Reinforcement Learning Coordinated Receiver Beamforming for Millimeter-Wave Train-ground Communications

As more and more people choose high-speed rail (HSR) as a means of transportation for short trips, there is ever growing demand of high quality of multimedia services. With its rich spectrum resources, millimeter wave (mm-wave) communications can satisfy the high network capacity requirements for HSR. Also, it is possible for receivers (RXs) to be equipped with antenna arrays in mm-wave communication systems due to its short wavelength. However, as HSRs run with high speed, the received signal power (RSP) varies rapidly over a cell and it is the lowest at the edge of the cell compared to other locations. Consequently, it is necessary to conduct research on RX beamforming for HSR in mm-wave band to improve the quality of the received signal. In this paper, we focus on RX beamforming for a mm-wave train-ground communication system. To improve the RSP, we propose an effective RX beamforming scheme based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL), and develop a deep Q-network (DQN) algorithm to train and determine the optimal RX beam direction with the purpose of maximizing average RSP. Through extensive simulations, we demonstrate that the proposed scheme has better performance than the four baseline schemes in terms of average RSP at most positions on the railway.

Energy-Constrained Computation Offloading in Space-Air-Ground Integrated Networks using Distributionally Robust Optimization

With the rapid development of connecting massive devices to the Internet, especially for remote areas without cellular network infrastructures, space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGINs) emerge and offload computation-intensive tasks. In this paper, we consider a SAGIN, where multiple low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellites providing connections to the cloud server, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and nearby base stations (BSs) providing edge computing services are included. The UAV flies along a fixed trajectory to collect tasks generated by Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and forwards these tasks to a BS or the cloud server for further processing. To facilitate efficient processing, the UAV needs to decide where to offload as well as the proportion of offloaded tasks. However, in practice, due to the variability of environment and actual demand, the amount of arrival tasks is uncertain. If the deterministic optimization is utilized to develop offloading strategy, unnecessary system overhead or higher task drop rate may occur, which severely damages the system robustness. To address this issue, we characterize the uncertainty with a data-driven approach, and formulate a distributionally robust optimization problem to minimize the expected energy-constrained system latency under the worst-case probability distribution. Furthermore, the distributionally robust latency optimization algorithm is proposed to reach the suboptimal solution. Finally, we perform simulations on the realworld data set, and compare with other benchmark schemes to verify the efficiency and robustness of our proposed algorithm.

Mobility Support for Millimeter Wave Communications: Opportunities and Challenges

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication technology offers a potential and promising solution to support 5G and B5G wireless networks in dynamic scenarios and applications. However, mobility introduces many challenges as well as opportunities to mmWave applications. To address these problems, we conduct a survey of the opportunities and technologies to support mmWave communications in mobile scenarios. Firstly, we summarize the mobile scenarios where mmWave communications are exploited, including indoor wireless local area network (WLAN) or wireless personal area network (WPAN), cellular access, vehicle-to-everything (V2X), high speed train (HST), unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and the new space-air-ground-sea communication scenarios. Then, to address users' mobility impact on the system performance in different application scenarios, we introduce several representative mobility models in mmWave systems, including human mobility, vehicular mobility, high speed train mobility and ship mobility. Next we survey the key challenges and existing solutions to mmWave applications, such as channel modeling, channel estimation, anti-blockage, and capacity improvement. Lastly, we discuss the open issues concerning mobility-aware mmWave communications that deserve further investigation. In particular, we highlight future heterogeneous mobile networks, dynamic resource management, artificial intelligence (AI) for mobility and integration of geographical information, deployment of large intelligent surface and reconfigurable antenna technology, and finally, the evolution to Terahertz (THz) communications.

Resource Allocation and Computation Offloading in a Millimeter-Wave Train-Ground Network

In this paper, we consider an mmWave-based trainground communication system in the high-speed railway (HSR) scenario, where the computation tasks of users can be partially offloaded to the rail-side base station (BS) or the mobile relays (MRs) deployed on the roof of the train. The MRs operate in the full-duplex (FD) mode to achieve high spectrum utilization. We formulate the problem of minimizing the average task execution latency of all users, under local device and MRs energy consumption constraints. We propose a joint resource allocation and computation offloading scheme (JRACO) to solve the problem. It consists of a resource allocation and computation offloading (RACO) algorithm and an MR Energy constraint algorithm. RACO utilizes the matching game theory to iterate between two subproblems, i.e., data segmentation and user association and sub-channel allocation. With the RACO results, the MR energy constraint algorithm ensures that the MR energy consumption constraint is satisfied. Extensive simulations validate that JRACO can effectively reduce the average latency and increase the number of served users compared with three baseline schemes.

Robust Transmission Scheduling for UAV-assisted Millimeter-Wave Train-Ground Communication System

With the explosive growth of mobile data, the demand of high-speed railway (HSR) passengers for broadband wireless access services urgently needs the support of ultra-highspeed scenario broadband wireless communication. Millimeterwave (mmWave) can achieve high data transmission rates, but it is accompanied by high propagation loss and vulnerability to blockage. To address this issue, developments of directional antennas and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) enhance the robustness of the mmWave train-ground communication system. In this paper, we propose a UAV and MRs relay assistance (UMRA) algorithm to effectively overcome link blockage, which can maximize the number of transmission flows on the premise of meeting QoS requirements and channel qualities. First, we formulate a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem for UAV trajectory design and transmission scheduling in the full-duplex (FD) mode. Then, in UMRA, the relay decision algorithm and transmission scheduling algorithm based on graph theory are proposed, which make a good tradeoff between computation complexity and system performance. Extensive simulation results show that a suitable UAV position will greatly improve the performance of the UMRA algorithm and make it close to the optimal solution. Compared with the other two existing benchmark schemes, with the high channel quality requirements and large-area blockage, UMRA can greatly improve the number of completed flows and system throughput.

Scheduling of UAV-assisted Millimeter Wave Communications for High-Speed Railway

To exploit richer spectrum resources for even better service quality, millimeter wave (mmWave) communication has been considered for high-speed railway (HSR) communication systems. In this paper, we focus on scheduling as many flows as possible while satisfying their QoS requirements. Due to interference, eavesdropping, or other problems, some flows may not be directly transmitted from the track-side BS. In this paper, we propose an UAV-assisted scheduling scheme which utilizes a UAV to serve as relay for such flows. The proposed scheme also utilize two mmWave bands, one for the BS links and the other for the UAV links. The proposed algorithm aims to maximize the number of flows with their QoS requirements satisfied. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves a superior performance on the number of completed flows and the system throughput over two baseline schemes.

Triple-Band Scheduling with Millimeter Wave and Terahertz Bands for Wireless Backhaul

With the explosive growth of mobile traffic demand, densely deployed small cells underlying macrocells have great potential for 5G and beyond wireless networks. In this paper, we consider the problem of supporting traffic flows with diverse QoS requirements by exploiting three high frequency bands, i.e., the 28GHz band, the E-band, and the Terahertz (THz) band. The cooperation of the three bands is helpful for maximizing the number of flows with their QoS requirements satisfied. To solve the formulated nonlinear integer programming problem, we propose a triple-band scheduling scheme which can select the optimum scheduling band for each flow among three different frequency bands. The proposed scheme also efficiently utilizes the resource to schedule flow transmissions in time slots. Extensive simulations demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed scheme over three baseline schemes with respect to the number of completed flows and the system throughput.

Coalition Game Based Full-duplex Popular Content Distribution in mmWave Vehicular Networks

The millimeter wave (mmWave) communication has drawn intensive attention with abundant band resources. In this paper, we consider the popular content distribution (PCD) problem in the mmWave vehicular network. In order to offload the communication burden of base stations (BSs), vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication is introduced into the PCD problem to transmit contents between on-board units (OBUs) and improve the transmission efficiency. We propose a full-duplex (FD) cooperative scheme based on coalition formation game, and the utility function is provided based on the maximization of the number of received contents. The contribution of each member in the coalition can be transferable to its individual profit. While maximizing the number of received contents in the fixed time, the cooperative scheme also ensures the individual profit of each OBU in the coalition. We evaluate the proposed scheme by extensive simulations in mmWave vehicular networks. Compared with other existing schemes, the proposed scheme has superior performances on the number of possessed contents and system fairness. Besides, the low complexity of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by the switch operation number and CPU time.

Efficient Hybrid Beamforming with Anti-Blockage Design for High-Speed Railway Communications

Future railway is expected to accommodate both train operation services and passenger broadband services. The millimeter wave (mmWave) communication is a promising technology in providing multi-gigabit data rates to onboard users. However, mmWave communications suffer from severe propagation attenuation and vulnerability to blockage, which can be very challenging in high-speed railway (HSR) scenarios. In this paper, we investigate efficient hybrid beamforming (HBF) design for train-to-ground communications. First, we develop a two-stage HBF algorithm in blockage-free scenarios. In the first stage, the minimum mean square error method is adopted for optimal hybrid beamformer design with low complexity and fast convergence; in the second stage, the orthogonal matching pursuit method is utilized to approximately recover the analog and digital beamformers. Second, in blocked scenarios, we design an anti-blockage scheme by adaptively invoking the proposed HBF algorithm, which can efficiently deal with random blockages. Extensive simulation results are presented to show the sum rate performance of the proposed algorithms under various configurations, including transmission power, velocity of the train, blockage probability, etc. It is demonstrated that the proposed anti-blockage algorithm can improve the effective rate by 20% in severely-blocked scenarios while maintaining low outage probability.

MIMO-Aided Nonlinear Hybrid Transceiver Design for Multiuser mmWave Systems Relying on Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding

Hybrid analog-digital (A/D) transceivers designed for millimeter wave (mmWave) systems have received substantial research attention, as a benefit of their lower cost and modest energy consumption compared to their fully-digital counterparts. We further improve their performance by conceiving a Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) based nonlinear joint design for the downlink of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) mmWave systems. Our optimization criterion is that of minimizing the mean square error (MSE) of the system under channel uncertainties subject both to realistic transmit power constraint and to the unit modulus constraint imposed on the elements of the analog beamforming (BF) matrices governing the BF operation in the radio frequency domain. We transform this optimization problem into a more tractable form and develop an efficient block coordinate descent (BCD) based algorithm for solving it. Then, a novel two-timescale nonlinear joint hybrid transceiver design algorithm is developed, which can be viewed as an extension of the BCD-based joint design algorithm for reducing both the channel state information (CSI) signalling overhead and the effects of outdated CSI. Moreover, we determine the near-optimal cancellation order for the THP structure based on the lower bound of the MSE. The proposed algorithms can be guaranteed to converge to a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) solution of the original problem. The simulation results demonstrate that our proposed nonlinear joint hybrid transceiver design algorithms significantly outperform the existing linear hybrid transceiver algorithms and approach the performance of the fully-digital transceiver, despite its lower cost and power dissipation.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted Device-to-Device Communications

With the evolution of the 5G, 6G and beyond, device-to-device (D2D) communication has been developed as an energy-, and spectrum-efficient solution. In cellular network, D2D links need to share the same spectrum resources with the cellular link. A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can reconfigure the phase shifts of elements and create favorable beam steering, which can mitigate aggravated interference caused by D2D links. In this paper, we study a RIS-assisted single cell uplink communication network scenario, where the cellular link and multiple D2D links utilize direct propagation and reflecting one-hop propagation. The problem of maximizing the total system rate is formulated by jointly optimizing transmission powers of all links and discrete phase shifts of all elements. The formulated problem is an NP-hard mixed integer non-convex non-linear problem. To obtain practical solutions, we capitalize on alternating maximization and the problem is decomposed into two sub-problems. For the power allocation, the problem is a difference of concave functions (DC) problem, which is solved with the gradient descent method. For the phase shift, a local search algorithm with lower complexity is utilized. Simulation results show that deploying RIS and optimizing the phase shifts have a significant effect on mitigating D2D network interference.

A Survey of Millimeter Wave (mmWave) Communications for 5G: Opportunities and Challenges

With the explosive growth of mobile data demand, the fifth generation (5G) mobile network would exploit the enormous amount of spectrum in the millimeter wave (mmWave) bands to greatly increase communication capacity. There are fundamental differences between mmWave communications and existing other communication systems, in terms of high propagation loss, directivity, and sensitivity to blockage. These characteristics of mmWave communications pose several challenges to fully exploit the potential of mmWave communications, including integrated circuits and system design, interference management, spatial reuse, anti-blockage, and dynamics control. To address these challenges, we carry out a survey of existing solutions and standards, and propose design guidelines in architectures and protocols for mmWave communications. We also discuss the potential applications of mmWave communications in the 5G network, including the small cell access, the cellular access, and the wireless backhaul. Finally, we discuss relevant open research issues including the new physical layer technology, software-defined network architecture, measurements of network state information, efficient control mechanisms, and heterogeneous networking, which should be further investigated to facilitate the deployment of mmWave communication systems in the future 5G networks.

Boosting Spatial Reuse via Multiple Paths Multi-Hop Scheduling for Directional mmWave WPANs

With huge unlicensed bandwidth available in most parts of the world, millimeter wave (mmWave) communications in the 60 GHz band has been considered as one of the most promising candidates to support multi-gigabit wireless services. Due to high propagation loss of mmWave channels, beamforming is likely to become adopted as an essential technique. Consequently, transmission in 60 GHz band is inherently directional. Directivity enables concurrent transmissions (spatial reuse), which can be fully exploited to improve network capacity. In this paper, we propose a multiple paths multi-hop scheduling scheme, termed MPMH, for mmWave wireless personal area networks, where the traffic across links of low channel quality is transmitted through multiple paths of multiple hops to unleash the potential of spatial reuse. We formulate the problem of multiple paths multi-hop scheduling as a mixed integer linear program (MILP), which is generally NP-hard. To enable the implementation of the multiple paths multi-hop transmission in practice, we propose a heuristic scheme including path selection, traffic distribution, and multiple paths multi-hop scheduling to efficiently solve the formulated problem. Finally, through extensive simulations, we demonstrate MPMH achieves near-optimal network performance in terms of transmission delay and throughput, and enhances the network performance significantly compared with existing protocols.

Energy Efficient Scheduling for mmWave Backhauling of Small Cells in Heterogeneous Cellular Networks

Heterogeneous cellular networks with small cells densely deployed underlying the conventional homogeneous macrocells are emerging as a promising candidate for the fifth generation (5G) mobile network. When a large number of base stations are deployed, the cost-effective, flexible, and green backhaul solution becomes one of the most urgent and critical challenges. With vast amounts of spectrum available, wireless backhaul in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band is able to provide several-Gbps transmission rates. To overcome high propagation loss at higher frequencies, mmWave backhaul utilize beamforming to achieve directional transmission, and concurrent transmissions (spatial reuse) under low inter-link interference can be enabled to significantly improve network capacity. To achieve an energy efficient solution for the mmWave backhauling of small cells, we first formulate the problem of minimizing the energy consumption via concurrent transmission scheduling and power control into a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem. Then we develop an energy efficient and practical mmWave backhauling scheme, where the maximum independent set based scheduling algorithm and the power control algorithm are proposed to exploit the spatial reuse for low energy consumption and high energy efficiency. We also theoretically analyze the conditions that our scheme reduces energy consumption, and the choice of the interference threshold for energy reduction. Through extensive simulations under various traffic patterns and system parameters, we demonstrate the superior performance of our scheme in terms of energy consumption and energy efficiency, and also analyze the choice of the interference threshold under different traffic loads, BS distributions, and the maximum transmission power.

Exploiting Device-to-Device Communications in Joint Scheduling of Access and Backhaul for mmWave Small Cells

With the explosive growth of mobile data demand, there has been an increasing interest in deploying small cells of higher frequency bands underlying the conventional homogeneous macrocell network, which is usually referred to as heterogeneous cellular networks, to significantly boost the overall network capacity. With vast amounts of spectrum available in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band, small cells at mmWave frequencies are able to provide multi-gigabit access data rates, while the wireless backhaul in the mmWave band is emerging as a cost-effective solution to provide high backhaul capacity to connect access points (APs) of the small cells. In order to operate the mobile network optimally, it is necessary to jointly design the radio access and backhaul networks. Meanwhile, direct transmissions between devices should also be considered to improve system performance and enhance the user experience. In this paper, we propose a joint transmission scheduling scheme for the radio access and backhaul of small cells in the mmWave band, termed D2DMAC, where a path selection criterion is designed to enable device-to-device transmissions for performance improvement. In D2DMAC, a concurrent transmission scheduling algorithm is proposed to fully exploit spatial reuse in mmWave networks. Through extensive simulations under various traffic patterns and user deployments, we demonstrate D2DMAC achieves near-optimal performance in some cases, and outperforms other protocols significantly in terms of delay and throughput. Furthermore, we also analyze the impact of path selection on the performance improvement of D2DMAC under different selected parameters.

Exploiting Device-to-Device Communications to Enhance Spatial Reuse for Popular Content Downloading in Directional mmWave Small Cells

With the explosive growth of mobile demand, small cells in millimeter wave (mmWave) bands underlying the macrocell networks have attracted intense interest from both academia and industry. MmWave communications in the 60 GHz band are able to utilize the huge unlicensed bandwidth to provide multiple Gbps transmission rates. In this case, device-to-device (D2D) communications in mmWave bands should be fully exploited due to no interference with the macrocell networks and higher achievable transmission rates. In addition, due to less interference by directional transmission, multiple links including D2D links can be scheduled for concurrent transmissions (spatial reuse). With the popularity of content-based mobile applications, popular content downloading in the small cells needs to be optimized to improve network performance and enhance user experience. In this paper, we develop an efficient scheduling scheme for popular content downloading in mmWave small cells, termed PCDS (popular content downloading scheduling), where both D2D communications in close proximity and concurrent transmissions are exploited to improve transmission efficiency. In PCDS, a transmission path selection algorithm is designed to establish multi-hop transmission paths for users, aiming at better utilization of D2D communications and concurrent transmissions. After transmission path selection, a concurrent transmission scheduling algorithm is designed to maximize the spatial reuse gain. Through extensive simulations under various traffic patterns, we demonstrate PCDS achieves near-optimal performance in terms of delay and throughput, and also superior performance compared with other existing protocols, especially under heavy load.

Exploiting Multi-Hop Relaying to Overcome Blockage in Directional mmWave Small Cells

With vast amounts of spectrum available in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band, small cells at mmWave frequencies densely deployed underlying the conventional homogeneous macrocell network have gained considerable interest from academia, industry, and standards bodies. Due to high propagation loss at higher frequencies, mmWave communications are inherently directional, and concurrent transmissions (spatial reuse) under low inter-link interference can be enabled to significantly improve network capacity. On the other hand, mmWave links are easily blocked by obstacles such as human body and furniture. In this paper, we develop a Multi-Hop Relaying Transmission scheme, termed as MHRT, to steer blocked flows around obstacles by establishing multi-hop relay paths. InMHRT, a relay path selection algorithmis proposed to establish relay paths for blocked flows for better use of concurrent transmissions. After relay path selection, we use a multi-hop transmission scheduling algorithm to compute near-optimal schedules by fully exploiting the spatial reuse. Through extensive simulations under various traffic patterns and channel conditions, we demonstrate MHRT achieves superior performance in terms of network throughput and connection robustness compared with other existing protocols, especially under serious blockage conditions. The performance of MHRT with different hop limitations is also simulated and analyzed for a better choice of themaximum hop number in practice.
