Transolver is a Linear Transformer: Revisiting Physics-Attention through the Lens of Linear Attention

Recent advances in Transformer-based Neural Operators have enabled significant progress in data-driven solvers for Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). Most current research has focused on reducing the quadratic complexity of attention to address the resulting low training and inference efficiency. Among these works, Transolver stands out as a representative method that introduces Physics-Attention to reduce computational costs. Physics-Attention projects grid points into slices for slice attention, then maps them back through deslicing. However, we observe that Physics-Attention can be reformulated as a special case of linear attention, and that the slice attention may even hurt the model performance. Based on these observations, we argue that its effectiveness primarily arises from the slice and deslice operations rather than interactions between slices. Building on this insight, we propose a two-step transformation to redesign Physics-Attention into a canonical linear attention, which we call Linear Attention Neural Operator (LinearNO). Our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on six standard PDE benchmarks, while reducing the number of parameters by an average of 40.0% and computational cost by 36.2%. Additionally, it delivers superior performance on two challenging, industrial-level datasets: AirfRANS and Shape-Net Car.

IMCI: Integrate Multi-view Contextual Information for Fact Extraction and Verification

With the rapid development of automatic fake news detection technology, fact extraction and verification (FEVER) has been attracting more attention. The task aims to extract the most related fact evidences from millions of open-domain Wikipedia documents and then verify the credibility of corresponding claims. Although several strong models have been proposed for the task and they have made great progress, we argue that they fail to utilize multi-view contextual information and thus cannot obtain better performance. In this paper, we propose to integrate multi-view contextual information (IMCI) for fact extraction and verification. For each evidence sentence, we define two kinds of context, i.e. intra-document context and inter-document context}. Intra-document context consists of the document title and all the other sentences from the same document. Inter-document context consists of all other evidences which may come from different documents. Then we integrate the multi-view contextual information to encode the evidence sentences to handle the task. Our experimental results on FEVER 1.0 shared task show that our IMCI framework makes great progress on both fact extraction and verification, and achieves state-of-the-art performance with a winning FEVER score of 72.97% and label accuracy of 75.84% on the online blind test set. We also conduct ablation study to detect the impact of multi-view contextual information. Our codes will be released at https://github.com/phoenixsecularbird/IMCI.

Multi-Outputs Is All You Need For Deblur

Image deblurring task is an ill-posed one, where exists infinite feasible solutions for blurry image. Modern deep learning approaches usually discard the learning of blur kernels and directly employ end-to-end supervised learning. Popular deblurring datasets define the label as one of the feasible solutions. However, we argue that it's not reasonable to specify a label directly, especially when the label is sampled from a random distribution. Therefore, we propose to make the network learn the distribution of feasible solutions, and design based on this consideration a novel multi-head output architecture and corresponding loss function for distribution learning. Our approach enables the model to output multiple feasible solutions to approximate the target distribution. We further propose a novel parameter multiplexing method that reduces the number of parameters and computational effort while improving performance. We evaluated our approach on multiple image-deblur models, including the current state-of-the-art NAFNet. The improvement of best overall (pick the highest score among multiple heads for each validation image) PSNR outperforms the compared baselines up to 0.11~0.18dB. The improvement of the best single head (pick the best-performed head among multiple heads on validation set) PSNR outperforms the compared baselines up to 0.04~0.08dB. The codes are available at https://github.com/Liu-SD/multi-output-deblur.

SNCSE: Contrastive Learning for Unsupervised Sentence Embedding with Soft Negative Samples

Unsupervised sentence embedding aims to obtain the most appropriate embedding for a sentence to reflect its semantic. Contrastive learning has been attracting developing attention. For a sentence, current models utilize diverse data augmentation methods to generate positive samples, while consider other independent sentences as negative samples. Then they adopt InfoNCE loss to pull the embeddings of positive pairs gathered, and push those of negative pairs scattered. Although these models have made great progress on sentence embedding, we argue that they may suffer from feature suppression. The models fail to distinguish and decouple textual similarity and semantic similarity. And they may overestimate the semantic similarity of any pairs with similar textual regardless of the actual semantic difference between them. This is because positive pairs in unsupervised contrastive learning come with similar and even the same textual through data augmentation. To alleviate feature suppression, we propose contrastive learning for unsupervised sentence embedding with soft negative samples (SNCSE). Soft negative samples share highly similar textual but have surely and apparently different semantic with the original samples. Specifically, we take the negation of original sentences as soft negative samples, and propose Bidirectional Margin Loss (BML) to introduce them into traditional contrastive learning framework, which merely involves positive and negative samples. Our experimental results show that SNCSE can obtain state-of-the-art performance on semantic textual similarity (STS) task with average Spearman's correlation coefficient of 78.97% on BERTbase and 79.23% on RoBERTabase. Besides, we adopt rank-based error analysis method to detect the weakness of SNCSE for future study.

Fixed-size Objects Encoding for Visual Relationship Detection

In this paper, we propose a fixed-size object encoding method (FOE-VRD) to improve performance of visual relationship detection tasks. Comparing with previous methods, FOE-VRD has an important feature, i.e., it uses one fixed-size vector to encoding all objects in each input image to assist the process of relationship detection. Firstly, we use a regular convolution neural network as a feature extractor to generate high-level features of input images. Then, for each relationship triplet in input images, i.e., $<$subject-predicate-object$>$, we apply ROI-pooling to get feature vectors of two regions on the feature maps that corresponding to bounding boxes of the subject and object. Besides the subject and object, our analysis implies that the results of predicate classification may also related to the rest objects in input images (we call them background objects). Due to the variable number of background objects in different images and computational costs, we cannot generate feature vectors for them one-by-one by using ROI pooling technique. Instead, we propose a novel method to encode all background objects in each image by using one fixed-size vector (i.e., FBE vector). By concatenating the 3 vectors we generate above, we successfully encode the objects using one fixed-size vector. The generated feature vector is then feed into a fully connected neural network to get predicate classification results. Experimental results on VRD database (entire set and zero-shot tests) show that the proposed method works well on both predicate classification and relationship detection.

Relative distance features for gait recognition with Kinect

Gait and static body measurement are important biometric technologies for passive human recognition. Many previous works argue that recognition performance based completely on the gait feature is limited. The reason for this limited performance remains unclear. This study focuses on human recognition with gait feature obtained by Kinect and shows that gait feature can effectively distinguish from different human beings through a novel representation -- relative distance-based gait features. Experimental results show that the recognition accuracy with relative distance features reaches up to 85%, which is comparable with that of anthropometric features. The combination of relative distance features and anthropometric features can provide an accuracy of more than 95%. Results indicate that the relative distance feature is quite effective and worthy of further study in more general scenarios (e.g., without Kinect).

Weakly supervised object detection using pseudo-strong labels

Object detection is an import task of computer vision.A variety of methods have been proposed, but methods using the weak labels still do not have a satisfactory result. In this paper,we propose a new framework that using the weakly supervised method's output as the pseudo-strong labels to train a strongly supervised model. One weakly supervised method is treated as black-box to generate class-specific bounding boxes on train dataset.A de-noise method is then applied to the noisy bounding boxes. Then the de-noised pseudo-strong labels are used to train a strongly object detection network. The whole framework is still weakly supervised because the entire process only uses the image-level labels. The experiment results on PASCAL VOC 2007 prove the validity of our framework, and we get result 43.4% on mean average precision compared to 39.5% of the previous best result and 34.5% of the initial method, respectively. And this frame work is simple and distinct, and is promising to be applied to other method easily.
