Fourier dimension and avoidance of linear patterns

The results in this paper are of two types. On one hand, we construct sets of large Fourier dimension that avoid nontrivial solutions of certain classes of linear equations. In particular, given any finite collection of translation-invariant linear equations of the form \begin{equation} \sum_{i=1}^v m_ix_i=m_0x_0, \; \text{ with } (m_0, m_1, \cdots, m_v) \in \mathbb N^{v+1}, m_0 = \sum_{i=1}^{v} m_i \text{ and } v \geq 2, \label{rational-eqn} \end{equation} we find a Salem set $E \subseteq [0,1]$ of dimension 1 that contains no nontrivial solution of any of these equations; in other words, there does not exist a vector $(x_0, x_1, \cdots, x_v) \in E^{v+1}$ with distinct entries that satisfies any of the given equations. Variants of this construction can also be used to obtain Salem sets that avoid solutions of translation-invariant linear equations of other kinds, for instance, when the collection of linear equations to be avoided is uncountable or has irrational coefficients. While such constructions seem to suggest that Salem sets can avoid many configurations, our second type of results offers a counterpoint. We show that a set in $\mathbb R$ whose Fourier dimension exceeds $2/(v+1)$ cannot avoid nontrivial solutions of all equations of the above form. In particular, a set of positive Fourier dimension must contain a nontrivial linear pattern of the above form for some $v$, and hence cannot be rationally independent. This is in stark contrast with known results \cite{M17} that ensure the existence of rationally independent sets of full Hausdorff dimension. The latter class of results may be viewed as quantitative evidence of the structural richness of Salem sets of positive dimension, even if the dimension is arbitrarily small.

Products of Functions in ${\mathop\mathrm{BMO}}({\mathcal X})$ and $H^1_{\rm at}({\mathcal X})$ via Wavelets over Spaces of Homogeneous Type

Let $({\mathcal X},d,μ)$ be a metric measure space of homogeneous type in the sense of R. R. Coifman and G. Weiss and $H^1_{\rm at}({\mathcal X})$ be the atomic Hardy space. Via orthonormal bases of regular wavelets and spline functions recently constructed by P. Auscher and T. Hytönen, the authors prove that the product $f\times g$ of $f\in H^1_{\rm at}({\mathcal X})$ and $g\in\mathop\mathrm{BMO}({\mathcal X})$, viewed as a distribution, can be written into a sum of two bounded bilinear operators, respectively, from $H^1_{\rm at}({\mathcal X})\times\mathop\mathrm{BMO}({\mathcal X})$ into $L^1({\mathcal X})$ and from $H^1_{\rm at}({\mathcal X})\times\mathop\mathrm{BMO}({\mathcal X})$ into $H^{\log}({\mathcal X})$, which affirmatively confirms the conjecture suggested by A. Bonami and F. Bernicot (This conjecture was presented by L. D. Ky in [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 425 (2015), 807-817]).

Weighted Endpoint Estimates for Commutators of Calderón-Zygmund Operators

Let $δ\in(0,1]$ and $T$ be a $δ$-Calderón-Zygmund operator. Let $w$ be in the Muckenhoupt class $A_{1+δ/n}({\mathbb R}^n)$ satisfying $\int_{{\mathbb R}^n}\frac {w(x)}{1+|x|^n}\,dx<\infty$. When $b\in{\rm BMO}(\mathbb R^n)$, it is well known that the commutator $[b, T]$ is not bounded from $H^1(\mathbb R^n)$ to $L^1(\mathbb R^n)$ if $b$ is not a constant function. In this article, the authors find out a proper subspace ${\mathop\mathcal{BMO}_w({\mathbb R}^n)}$ of $\mathop\mathrm{BMO}(\mathbb R^n)$ such that, if $b\in {\mathop\mathcal{BMO}_w({\mathbb R}^n)}$, then $[b,T]$ is bounded from the weighted Hardy space $H_w^1(\mathbb R^n)$ to the weighted Lebesgue space $L_w^1(\mathbb R^n)$. Conversely, if $b\in{\rm BMO}({\mathbb R}^n)$ and the commutators of the classical Riesz transforms $\{[b,R_j]\}_{j=1}^n$ are bounded from $H^1_w({\mathbb R}^n)$ into $L^1_w({\mathbb R}^n)$, then $b\in {\mathop\mathcal{BMO}_w({\mathbb R}^n)}$.

A new framework for generalized Besov-type and Triebel-Lizorkin-type spaces

In this paper, the authors propose a new framework under which a theory of generalized Besov-type and Triebel-Lizorkin-type function spaces is developed. Many function spaces appearing in harmonic analysis fall under the scope of this new framework. Among others, the boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator or the related vector-valued maximal function on any of these function spaces is not required to construct these generalized scales of smoothness spaces. Instead of this, a key idea used in this framework is an application of the Peetre maximal function. This idea originates from recent findings in the abstract coorbit space theory obtained by Holger Rauhut and Tino Ullrich. Under this new setting, the authors establish the boundedness of pseudo-differential operators based on atomic and molecular characterizations and also the boundedness of the Fourier multipliers. The characterizations of these function spaces by means of differences and oscillations are also established. As further applications of this new framework, the authors reexamine and polish some existing results for many different scales of function spaces.

Intrinsic Square Function Characterizations of Hardy Spaces with Variable Exponents

Let $p(\cdot):\ \mathbb R^n\to(0,\infty)$ be a measurable function satisfying some decay condition and some locally log-Hölder continuity. In this article, via first establishing characterizations of the variable exponent Hardy space $H^{p(\cdot)}(\mathbb R^n)$ in terms of the Littlewood-Paley $g$-function, the Lusin area function and the $g_λ^\ast$-function, the authors then obtain its intrinsic square function characterizations including the intrinsic Littlewood-Paley $g$-function, the intrinsic Lusin area function and the intrinsic $g_λ^\ast$-function. The $p(\cdot)$-Carleson measure characterization for the dual space of $H^{p(\cdot)}(\mathbb R^n)$, the variable exponent Campanato space $\mathcal{L}_{1,p(\cdot),s}(\mathbb R^n)$, in terms of the intrinsic function is also presented.

Musielak-Orlicz Campanato Spaces and Applications

Let $φ: \mathbb R^n\times [0,\infty)\to[0,\infty)$ be such that $φ(x,\cdot)$ is an Orlicz function and $φ(\cdot,t)$ is a Muckenhoupt $A_\infty(\mathbb R^n)$ weight uniformly in $t$. In this article, the authors introduce the Musielak-Orlicz Campanato space ${\mathcal L}_{φ,q,s}({\mathbb R}^n)$ and, as an application, prove that some of them is the dual space of the Musielak-Orlicz Hardy space $H^φ(\mathbb R^n)$, which in the case when $q=1$ and $s=0$ was obtained by L. D. Ky [arXiv: 1105.0486]. The authors also establish a John-Nirenberg inequality for functions in ${\mathcal L}_{φ,1,s}({\mathbb R}^n)$ and, as an application, the authors also obtain several equivalent characterizations of ${\mathcal L}_{φ,q,s}({\mathbb R}^n)$, which, in return, further induce the $φ$-Carleson measure characterization of ${\mathcal L}_{φ,1,s}({\mathbb R}^n)$.

Boundedness of Intrinsic Littlewood-Paley Functions on Musielak-Orlicz Morrey and Campanato Spaces

Let $φ: {\mathbb R^n}\times [0,\infty)\to[0,\infty)$ be such that $\vz(x,\cdot)$ is nondecreasing, $φ(x,0)=0$, $φ(x,t)>0$ when $t>0$, $\lim_{t\to\infty}φ(x,t)=\infty$ and $\vz(\cdot,t)$ is a Muckenhoupt $A_\infty({\mathbb R^n})$ weight uniformly in $t$. Let $ϕ: [0,\infty)\to[0,\infty)$ be nondecreasing. In this article, the authors introduce the Musielak-Orlicz Morrey space $\mathcal M^{φ,ϕ}(\mathbb R^n)$ and obtain the boundedness on $\mathcal M^{φ,ϕ}(\mathbb R^n)$ of the intrinsic Lusin area function $S_α$, the intrinsic $g$-function $g_α$, the intrinsic $g_λ^*$-function $g^\ast_{λ, α}$ and their commutators with ${\rm BMO}(\rn)$ functions, where $α\in(0,1]$, $λ\in(\min\{\max\{3,\,p_1\},3+2\az/n\},\infty)$ and $p_1$ denotes the uniformly upper type index of $\vz$. Let $Φ: [0,\infty)\to[0,\infty)$ be nondecreasing, $Φ(0)=0$, $Φ(t)>0$ when $t>0$, and $\lim_{t\to\infty}Φ(t)=\infty$, $w\in A_\infty(\mathbb R^n)$ and $ϕ: (0,\infty)\to(0,\infty)$ be nonincreasing. The authors also introduce the weighted Orlicz-Morrey space $M_w^{Φ,ϕ}(\mathbb R^n)$ and obtain the boundedness on $M_w^{Φ,ϕ}(\mathbb R^n)$ of the aforementioned intrinsic Littlewood-Paley functions and their commutators with ${\rm BMO}(\rn)$ functions. Finally, for $q\in[1,\fz)$, the boundedness of the aforementioned intrinsic Littlewood-Paley functions on the Musielak Orlicz Campanato space $\mathcal L^{φ,q}(\mathbb R^n)$ is also established.

New Characterizations of Besov-Triebel-Lizorkin-Hausdorff Spaces Including Coorbits and Wavelets

In this paper, the authors establish new characterizations of the recently introduced Besov-type spaces $\dot{B}^{s,τ}_{p,q}({\mathbb R}^n)$ and Triebel-Lizorkin-type spaces $\dot{F}^{s,τ}_{p,q}({\mathbb R}^n)$ with $p\in (0,\infty]$, $s\in{\mathbb R}$, $τ\in [0,\infty)$, and $q\in (0,\infty]$, as well as their preduals, the Besov-Hausdorff spaces $B\dot{H}^{s,τ}_{p,q}(\R^n)$ and Triebel-Lizorkin-Hausdorff spaces $F\dot{H}^{s,τ}_{p,q}(\R^n)$, in terms of the local means, the Peetre maximal function of local means, and the tent space (the Lusin area function) in both discrete and continuous types. As applications, the authors then obtain interpretations as coorbits in the sense of H. Rauhut in [Studia Math. 180 (2007), 237-253] and discretizations via the biorthogonal wavelet bases for the full range of parameters of these function spaces. Even for some special cases of this setting such as $\dot F^s_{\infty,q}({\mathbb R}^n)$ for $s\in{\mathbb R}$, $q\in (0,\infty]$ (including $\mathop\mathrm{BMO} ({\mathbb R}^n)$ when $s=0$, $q=2$), the $Q$ space $Q_α({\mathbb R}^n)$, the Hardy-Hausdorff space $HH_{-α}({\mathbb R}^n)$ for $α\in (0,\min\{\frac n2,1\})$, the Morrey space ${\mathcal M}^u_p({\mathbb R}^n)$ for $1<p\le u<\infty$, and the Triebel-Lizorkin-Morrey space $\dot{\mathcal{E}}^s_{upq}({\mathbb R}^n)$ for $0<p\le u<\infty$, $s\in{\mathbb R}$ and $q\in(0,\infty]$, some of these results are new.

New Real-Variable Characterizations of Musielak-Orlicz Hardy Spaces

Let $φ: {\mathbb R^n}\times [0,\infty)\to[0,\infty)$ be such that $φ(x,\cdot)$ is an Orlicz function and $φ(\cdot,t)$ is a Muckenhoupt $A_\infty({\mathbb R^n})$ weight. The Musielak-Orlicz Hardy space $H^φ(\mathbb R^n)$ is defined to be the space of all $f\in{\mathcal S}'({\mathbb R^n})$ such that the grand maximal function $f^*$ belongs to the Musielak-Orlicz space $L^φ(\mathbb R^n)$. Luong Dang Ky established its atomic characterization. In this paper, the authors establish some new real-variable characterizations of $H^φ(\mathbb R^n)$ in terms of the vertical or the non-tangential maximal functions, or the Littlewood-Paley $g$-function or $g_λ^\ast$-function, via first establishing a Musielak-Orlicz Fefferman-Stein vector-valued inequality. Moreover, the range of $λ$ in the $g_λ^\ast$-function characterization of $H^φ(\mathbb R^n)$ coincides with the known best results, when $H^φ(\mathbb R^n)$ is the classical Hardy space $H^p(\mathbb R^n)$, with $p\in (0,1]$, or its weighted variant.

Vanishing Mean Oscillation Spaces Associated with Operators Satisfying Davies-Gaffney Estimates

Let $(\mathcal{X}, d, μ)$ be a metric measure space, $L$ a linear operator which has a bounded $H_\infty$ functional calculus and satisfies the Davies-Gaffney estimate, $Φ$ a concave function on $(0,\infty)$ of critical lower type $p_Φ^-\in(0,1]$ and $ρ(t)\equiv t^{-1}/Φ^{-1}(t^{-1})$ for all $t\in(0,\infty)$. In this paper, the authors introduce the generalized VMO space ${\mathrm {VMO}}_{ρ,L}({\mathcal X})$ associated with $L$, and establish its characterization via the tent space. As applications, the authors show that $({\mathrm {VMO}}_{ρ,L}({\mathcal X}))^*=B_{Φ,L^*}({\mathcal X})$, where $L^*$ denotes the adjoint operator of $L$ in $L^2({\mathcal X})$ and $B_{Φ,L^*}({\mathcal X})$ the Banach completion of the Orlicz-Hardy space $H_{Φ,L^*}({\mathcal X})$.
