Period-doubling Continued Fractions are Algebraic in Characteristic $2$

Considering an arbitrary pair of distinct and non constant polynomials, $a$ and $b$ in $\mathbb{F}_2[t]$, we build a continued fraction in $\mathbb{F}_2((1/t))$ whose partial quotients are only equal to $a$ or $b$. In a previous work of the first author and Han (to appear in Acta Arithmetica), the authors considered two cases where the sequence of partial quotients represents in each case a famous and basic $2$-automatic sequence, both defined in a similar way by morphisms. They could prove the algebraicity of the corresponding continued fractions for several pairs $(a,b)$ in the first case (the Prouhet-Thue-Morse sequence) and gave the proof for a particular pair for the second case (the period-doubling sequence). Recently Bugeaud and Han (arXiv:2203.02213) proved the algebraicity for an arbitrary pair in the first case. Here we give a short proof for an arbitrary pair in the second case.

Real-space Observation of Incommensurate Spin Density Wave and Coexisting Charge Density Wave on Cr(001) surface

In itinerant magnetic systems, a spin density wave (SDW) state can be induced by Fermi surface nesting and electron-electron interaction. It may intertwine with other orders such as charge density wave (CDW), while their relation is still yet to be understood. Here via spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy, we directly observed long-range spin modulation on Cr(001) surface, which corresponds to the well-known incommensurate SDW of bulk Cr. It displays 6.0 nm in-plane period and anti-phase behavior between adjacent (001) planes. Meanwhile, we simultaneously observed the coexisting CDW with half the period of SDW. Such SDW/CDW have highly correlated domain structures and are in-phase. Surprisingly, the CDW displays a contrast inversion around a density-of-states dip at -22 meV, indicating an anomalous CDW gap opened below EF. These observations support that the CDW is a secondary order driven by SDW. Our work is not only a real-space characterization of incommensurate SDW, but also provides insights on how SDW and CDW coexist.

Are wearable devices ready for HTTPS? Measuring the cost of secure communication protocols on wearable devices

The majority of available wearable devices require communication with Internet servers for data analysis and storage, and rely on a paired smartphone to enable secure communication. However, wearable devices are mostly equipped with WiFi network interfaces, enabling direct communication with the Internet. Secure communication protocols should then run on these wearables itself, yet it is not clear if they can be efficiently supported. In this paper, we show that wearable devices are ready for direct and secure Internet communication by means of experiments with both controlled and Internet servers. We observe that the overall energy consumption and communication delay can be reduced with direct Internet connection via WiFi from wearables compared to using smartphones as relays via Bluetooth. We also show that the additional HTTPS cost caused by TLS handshake and encryption is closely related to number of parallel connections, and has the same relative impact on wearables and smartphones.

Subword Complexity and (non)-automaticity of certain completely multiplicative functions

In this article, we prove that for a completely multiplicative function $f$ from $\mathbb{N}^*$ to a field $K$ such that the set $$\{p \;|\; f(p)\neq 1_K \;\mbox{and }p \mbox{ is prime}\}$$ is finite, the asymptotic subword complexity of $f$ is $Θ(n^t)$, where $t$ is the number of primes $p$ that $f(p)\neq 0_K, 1_K$. This proves in particular that sequences like $((-1)^{v_2(n)+v_3(n)})_n$ are not $k$-automatic for $k\geq 2$.
